Battle of Wills
Pairings : Yangki x Sudem
Characters : Yangki Deori, Sudem Boruah, Original Characters
Word Count : 2533
Yangki walked into the olympic boxing arena for the final time, shouts of her and her country’s name echoing around the stadium as her name was announced on the speakers, creating a charged and energetic atmosphere from the audience.
But Yangki was only focused on one thing. To do something no Indian woman has ever done before.
She felt nervous and anxious, feeling the hopes and prayers of 1.2 billion people riding on her shoulders.
However, her coach, sensing her heightened nerves told her something, something that was said by a certain someone five days back.
*
“And Bianca Russo from Italy has withdrawn from the match in under one minute! This means Yangki Deori of India wins the Quarterfinal round of 75kg!”
Yangki, however, only felt shock at her opponent’s decision and then pure elation as she realized she had just secured a medal win.
An olympic medal win. Every athlete’s dream which only less than 1% of them get to achieve.
She tried hard not to tear up at the moment because after all the allegations of her being a man and banned from participating in the last year’s world championships, because of some mere suspicions, she finally, finally, had a chance to prove her worth again.
However, she should have sensed something was off when her opponent chose not to shake hands with her and stomped off the ring angrily
*
Yangki took a deep breath now and stepped into the ring, the words from her coach of fifteen years, Samarth Verma and Sudem ringing in her ears.
“Give them hell.”
Speaking of Sudem, she knew he would be watching from the stands and cheering for her, just like she did for him when he won that historic bronze medal in fencing.

Yangki watched the match with her heart drumming in her ears.
Two points.
Sudem was only two points away from creating history. The match kept getting more tense as his opponent took another point and now they were both equal.
Yangki kept cheering for him ever since the first second of the match started and now it was a point where anyone could win this.
At that moment, her heart was beating so fast, she closed her eyes and heard the familiar sound of a point scored. She did not dare open her eyes.
She knew the match had ended as the uproar had now gotten deafening. She knew someone had won.
“And the bronze medal goes to Sudem Boruah of India!”
Her eyes flew open and she screamed as loud as she could because Sudem had won! He just won and created history!
Her shout had thankfully got drowned out by the Indian spectators celebrating his win but at that very moment, Sudem caught her eye.
With tears streaming down his face, he made a heart with both his hands at her. She grinned at him tearfully and repeated his gesture.
She grinned at him as he stood on the podium, seeing the precious bronze medal adorning his neck.
And when he met her as he exited the arena, she screamed and ran into his arms, hugging the life out of him as her love had now created history and joined the ranks of the people who had become Olympic medallists.
*
She touched the gloves of her opponent, Amelia Matthews of Great Britain, and went to her corner as the bell rang.
She knew what her strategy was for tonight.
She landed some hits, moved away from some and kept light on her feet as her opponent kept charging at her with all she had got.
With round one ending, the judges scored in Matthews’ favour, shocking everybody present in the arena and those who were watching.
It was very clear that Yangki was more dominant in the first round.
Sudem leapt to his feet and angrily yelled a curse as the crowd uproared and booed at the referees' decision.
After all, what did they know about how Yangki had felt when she was being trolled, abused and lashed out at from everywhere just four days back?
*
Five days back
Few minutes.
A few minutes was all it took for everything to go to hell.
When Yangki’s match had ended, the Italian boxer was asked about her match and her statement had created a storm.
“It was like getting hit by a man.”
The uproar at her statement had caused a spark of controversy, leading to Yangki getting trolled, abused and harassed online in the following hours and faced the media questions that brought her painful memories of the world championship again.
The world championship of last year where she was tested several times for her gender and banned from participating because they determined she was not a woman.
She was targeted because she had more visible lean muscles and height than the other opponents of her weight category.
It was her sheer effort that she had not broken down then and there at the media center.
But Sudem knew she was barely holding it altogether, somehow managing to hold her head high as she faced the disgusted and accusing glares of many people who hated her while coming back to her room.
She, however, broke down in his arms as they sat in a corner of a quiet hallway together, his heart breaking at her sobs, because it should have been her moment to celebrate, not mourn it.
Not after everything she had gone through the last few months.
*
Samarth was horrified at the referees’ decision. And angry too.
His student was clearly better than the British boxer and yet, they refused to declare the first round in her favour.
As Yangki sat down on the stool, still stunned, he thought of an idea.
A very risky one but one that could guarantee a clear win for Yangki.
“Yangki, listen to me,” Samarth thought to tell her the cold facts and get it over with as soon as possible. “They are not going to let you win at this rate.”
She was shocked to hear that but he continued.
“But I have an idea, it's very risky and I think you can totally do it.”
As he started explaining the idea to her, stalling the referee at the same time who needed to start the bout, Yangki’s eyes widened but she nodded at him, determined.
And stood back up again for round two with fire in her eyes.
*
Four days back
However, not everything was as bleak as it looked to be.
That night for dinner, Yangki’s archer roommate and her friends accompanied them both to dinner, throwing back glares at anyone who glared at Yangki, showing she was not alone.
Many of the Indian athletes later on extended their support by congratulating her on her win and wishing her best for her next bout.
On the internet, the Boxing Federation of India, Sports Authority of India and many other big and small people and organizations came to her defense.
*
Two days back
When Yangki walked into the arena for her semifinals, she was met with the roaring supportive cheers and booing alike.
Inspite of all of that, she chose to ignore the crowd entirely and fight the Thai boxer who had beaten her all the times Yangki had fought with her.
Needless to say, she let out all of the anger she had been carrying with her in the ensuing three rounds, guided by her coach and never letting the Thai dominate her at any time.
One hit by her opponent resulted in Yangki hitting another two or even three on her.
When Yangki was declared as the winner, she could only jump in happiness as she realized what she had accomplished in that moment.
The Thai boxer gave her a hug and congratulated her heartily on her win.
*
(When the boxer was interviewed after the match, she only told that it was a big shock for her to lose against Yangki for the first time and wasn’t satisfied with herself but nonetheless was content to win a medal for her country.)
*
Yangki moved into the ring and started landing quick hits on her opponent.
The goal in this round was to either knock her down or out in any (legal) way. She chose to go for her face to disorient her and deliberately misfired hits on her arms as she took some hits to tire her out.
Instead of watching Yangki, Samarth had his focus on Matthews to mark the exact moment for Yangki to knock her out. There was only a minute left and so far, he couldn’t find any opening. He had specifically instructed her he will only call out at the point she will have to make her move.
Their patience and efforts paid off as Samarth found an opening in Matthews’ weakening defense and yelled to Yangki.
“Maar!”
Yangki wasted no time in hitting a roundhouse punch and Matthews lost her balance and fell down.
It took her somewhere near six seconds and the referees’ count of two to get back up, effectively losing 2 points off her round as the bell rang for round two.
To no one’s surprise, the round was clearly in Yangki’s favour at 10-8, owing to Matthews’ knockdown.
*
One day ago
Matthews was quite vocal in her interviews about her opinions on Yangki and trash talked about her as much as she could.
She went as far as to share some posts on instagram how she had to fight a man and how India always somehow lost in the final round.
Everyone in the Indian camp kept Yangki away from the news, knowing it was Matthews’ mind games to pressurize her as Yangki was stressed about her finals already.
*
That evening after her training, when Yangki had some free time, she sat with Sudem in the same quiet corner of the hallway again, resting her head on his shoulder and intertwining her large fingers with his smaller ones.
“What do you think is going to happen tomorrow?” She asked quietly.
Sudem knew her doubts like they were his own. He knew just like the semifinals, she was up against someone she had always lost to. More than that, Amelia Matthews had participated in 89 international matches and never lost a single one in her career.
He remembered that he had asked her the same thing before his bronze medal match.
And just like she had assured him, he said the same thing to her.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, my love, I will always love you and be proud of you.”
*
The bell for the third and final round rang and Sudem could feel his heart drumming in his ears.
The time was ticking down and so far, both of the boxers looked equally good in the ring.
Matthews, after her brief knockdown in the last round, had come back with anger and she was doing all she could to make up for the mistake of the second round.
Samarth, however, had told Yangki to stick to their strategy to knock her down but so far, it looked like the strategy was not going to work.
Matthews knew what they were trying to do, so she kept moving out of Yangki’s way, playing and toying with her like she was some easy prey.
After a minute had passed, however, Yangki switched up her strategy and loosened her attacks, allowing Matthews to land some hits on her and astonishing Samarth and everyone else who was watching her.
They all thought that Yangki had got tired, only defending as much as she could and so Matthews sped up her attacks on her.
However, with only a minute remaining, Matthews slowed down and dropped her defense a little.
But unfortunately for her, it was the moment Yangki was waiting for. As soon as her defense was totally absent, Yangki threw a punch, disorienting her so bad she stumbled away from her in surprise.
And before she could even start to recover from the shock, Yangki threw another punch at her, knocking her down again on the ground.
Everyone’s shock was evident as everyone realized what she had done.
She had just used her opponent’s strength to her advantage.
Even though Matthews got back up on the referees’ count of three, everyone knew the match was over for the British woman and as soon as the bell rang, the crowd bursted into an uproar.
Yangki, for her part, clutched her abdomen as it had taken the most damage and only managed to grab a towel from her coach to hold it to her bleeding nose as her gloves were removed before she was called to the center again.
When the referee raised her hand upward, denoting her as the winner of the gold medal, Sudem screamed loudly in happiness.
It took Yangki being hugged by Samarth to realize she had just won the gold medal. And then, she screamed in happiness, despite the constant pain she was in because she realized what she had just done.
She had created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal.
She hugged Samarth again, who was openly crying and then her team, who were beaming and applauding for her.
And then, her eyes darted furiously, trying to find the one person who was her home and her comfort through all of this mess.
She ignored all of the press trying to shove their mics in her face and the cameras trying to get every shot of her.
She found him, making a heart with his hands and beamed at him. And then, did something by her heart and not her head.
She went upto the stands as much as she can from the outside, Sudem following her move and meeting her in the middle.
“Congratulations, oh my god, you did it!” he whispered to her. But she wasn’t listening to his words.
She, instead, pulled him into a kiss, right in front of everyone who either cheered for her even more or gasped at her bold move.
(There were even catcalls and teasing remarks from their new friends who had come to see her match, but they chose not to pay any attention.)
Sudem was stunned by her move momentarily but kissed her back, forgetting about everything but the woman around whose, his arm was wrapped and her lips on his as she had just created history.
*
And when the national anthem had started playing, Sudem and Samarth had openly cried while Yangki only smiled wide, taking in and basking in the moment.

However, Yangki and Sudem chose not to check the internet and only replied to calls from their parents.
They both had given interviews in a press conference after their respective wins and knew they were not going to have a moment to breathe as soon as they left for India.
For now, they both sat content in the hallway again, taking in all the quiet they could before they started a new journey of their lives again.
