Hakuoki: thoughts on the anime [WARNING: SPOILERS]

just finished the Hakuoki anime and i’m definitely quite bitter about how the ending was handled [Record of the Jade Blossom].

- First of all, what the hell happened to Shinpachi? The last we saw of him, he was telling Hijikata that he would see them again in Aizu, and then, nada. Hijikata, Chizuru, Saito, Heisuke and even Sanan were in Aizu together, but no sign of Shinpachi at all. they never explained what became of him. it kinda feels like the writers forgot about him. this plot hole is driving me nuts.

- Chizuru never really showcased her sword-skills, even though it was mentioned that she was trained in defence. why the heck would you carry a sword, if every time someone attacks you, you’re going to close your eyes and raise your arm ??? like what is that going to accomplish ??? i just-

- i’m kinda disgruntled about the fact that Chizuru didn’t end up with ANY of the characters I shipped her with. [i shipped her with Yamazaki, Souji, Heisuke and Kazama.] i mean, i kind of knew who would be endgame from the beginning, since it seemed like Hijikata was the mc, tbh, but still. [I MEAN COME ON CHIZURU AND SOUJI HAD SO MUCH CHEMISTRY]

- i mean, i’m all for death, but this was just depressing. did every single one of them really have to die? literally EVERYONE, including Kazama. even Hijikata wasn’t spared. [that’s another thing. Hijikata’s death was kind of ambiguous. i assume he did die, but then why didn’t he turn to dust? or did he? idk i would have preferred a little bit of a clearer conclusion.]

- the final season felt very rushed and because of that, i feel some parts of the story were executed rather poorly, making things a bit confusing.

I had been on patrol with the Shinesngumi when they got into a fight with some ronin. As staying would have caused them problems, I had just been about to move away when I had been engulfed in a dazzling light.

I don't know if I had lost consciousness, but when I opened my eyes again, I was lying alone in a strange place.

Yamzaki: Yukimura-kun!

Just as I got up, Yamazaki-san ran towards me…

Shortly after——we went to the place where Okita-san and the others were fighting a group of what were known as "Yakuma."

Amidst the cheers celebrating the end of the fight with the Yakuma, I suppressed my growing unease as I asked a question.

Yukimura: Can you tell me more about Shinga——!?

Okita: Hey, Chizuru-chan. What are you doing over there?

Okita-san smiled as he came into view——but his eyes weren't smiling. I knew thta he was on guard against the unfamiliar woman next to me.

Yukimura: Okita-san.

Okita: Anyway, let's head back to everyone else first.

Heronine: U-Um...

Yukimura: In any case, I'm fine now. Thank you for saving me.

I thanked the woman who had gone out of her way to help me, even though she had been in danger herself. It looked like she wanted to say something, but Okita-san grabbed my hand and pulled me away.

Okita: Do you know what’s going on right now? You seem pretty calm.

Yukimura: I'm also not calm too, um, can you let go of my hand...

Okita: I’m holding onto you so you don't do something unnecessary again. Or are you going to give me an order?

Yukimura: I, I don't plan on doing that...

Yukimura: Of course not. I didn't say a word about the Shinsengumi.

Okita: That's good. Given how unclear the circumstances are right now, I hope you’ll be more careful about what you say and do. You also value your life, right?

Yukimura:...I understand.

Okita-san must have been caring for me in his own way, so I obediently replied to him.

Okita:...Good. In any case, I've warned you, and now we need to figure out how to deal with the ones over there.

Hearing this basic question from Harada-san, everyone shut their mouths. I was about tell everyone what tht woman had told me, but just as I was about to open my mouth——

Saito: There's still too little information available to make any conclusions. We should meet up with the Vice-Commander first.

Yukimura: U-Um…! I have something I want to tell everyone!

Amakasu Kagemochi: Excuse me, please don't be so hostile, I'm not going to come any closer.

Seeing the other person's seemingly gentle smile, Harada-san and Heisuke-kun stopped in front of him. at the same time, the everyone from the Shinsengumi, as if by prior agreement, put their hands onto the hilts of their swords. In the increasingly murderous atmosphere, his smile only looked chilling…

Harada: Hey, what should we do? It seems like if this continues, we'll get arrested.

Okita: If they want to arrest us, they'll be enemies, right? In that case, then it's fine to cut them down, right?

Yukimura: O-Okita-san...! They can hear all of that.

In the midst of this simmering tension, I couldn't help but raise my voice at Okita-san, who was being too careless.

Okita: What a pain, woulddn't bit be easier to just cut everyone down?

Saito: No, we should retreat for now, and go join up with the Vice-Commander and the others who were separated.

Okita: Even if that person isn't here, wee'll be just fine.

Yamazaki: That would be fine if this was Kyoto… in this unfamiliar place, it would be inadvisable to recklessly start a fight.

Toudou: What! This isn't Kyoto?

Okita: It seems so. Heisuke, you're too slow.

Touddou: Shut up. I noticed that a long time ago!

Harada: But even if you say that you're going to look for Hijikata-san, there's no guarantee that he's nearby, right?

Saito: That’s why we should act more carefully right now.

Okita: Alright, alright, I get it.

Saito: Yamazaki, can you go check around and see if the Vice-Commander and the others are nearby.

Yamazaki: Understood. After findding the Vice-Commndderthen I'll join up with you.

If I were to explain things, that would instead cause everyone confusion. While I listened to everyone talk, listening to everyone's conversation, I also considered that.

Toudou: Chizuru, don't be so disappointed! No matter what happens, I will… we'll protect you!

Yukimura: Y-Yes… Thank you, Heisuke-kun.

Harada: Then, let's run away first... Let's go!

Harada-san took a stance with his spear——he just made a feint, and then we turned around and ran.

Despite how there was no conclusive evidence, I spoke of what Yukimura had told me——

Uesugi Kenshin: We met them when trying to find the Himemiko…. I can't think that the both of them aren't related.

Heroine:...Hey, Imari-kun, does Himemiko-sama know about this?

Imari: No, no/they aren't/don't. I don't know anything… perhaps Himemiko-sama is the only one who knows.

Heroine: Is that so...

In the end, only Himemiko-sama knew all of the answers.

Naoe Kanetsugu: However, as long as they might have come from another world, there might be a clue for us to find the Himemiko.

Uesugi Kagekatsu: Ah, so that's wwhy Kagemochi-san let them go...?

Amakasu Kagemochi:...Is that how it is? But I do actually want to leave them alone for now.

Everyone wryly laughed because that was response was very much in Kagemochi-sama's style. However, I didn't think they held any clues that would lead us to Himemiko-sama.

Heroine: (In that case, is she like me, a "woman from another world"? Someone that Imari-kun can rely on...?)

While in the midst of this situation full of unsolved mysteries, Kagekatsu-kun gently pulled my sleeve.

Uesugi Kagekatsu: Hey.... are they all from the same world as you?

Heroine: No, it doesn't seem to be the same as mine.

Uesugi Kagekatsu: I see... but it would be nice if we could find a way back with them… [not sure if this more in the 'you can find a way back home', or 'we can send them home' context)

Heroine: Yes...

Uesugi Kenshin: Kagekatsu, Kanetsugu.

Naoe Kanetsugu: Here.

Uesugi Kagekatsu:……Here.

Uesugi Kenshin: Go after those people and offer them assistance. If they want to talk, bring them back to the town.

Kakizaki Kageie: Kenshin-sama...! Are you going to leave these suspicious people alone?

Uesugi Kenshin: If they truly are messengers of the Himemiko, then we must protect them. That's all I have to say.

After Kagekatsu-kun and the others received Kenshin-san's orders, they immediately set off into action.

Let me scream something into the void real quick:

The way Hakuouki KW/EB treated Chizuru gave me gender dysphoria in a way I never experienced before.

I love sword fighting and since otome games are there for wishfulfillment and Hakuouki is a samurai-dating-simulation, I dreamt of fighting alongside my love. And (iirc) only Okita's route and Yamazaki's Game Over 3 gave me that and punished my "unfeminine" desires by 1) having my love Souji tell me to stop fighting without ever offering to teach me to get better and 2) by letting me, my love Souji and that guy supposed to be my love interest die tragically and prematurely.

Gender dysphoria, NOT internalized misogyny, made me have a visceral reaction towards how KW/EB handled the player character whose official name is Chizuru.

And when I talk about said PC, I don't mean the independent character Chizuru that was created in the multiple Hakuoki adaptations and whatnot, I talk about her as a PC, an insert character for the player.

PC-Chizuru was supposed to be me so it felt like the game kept telling me, in my face, "You're X because you're a woman. You're a woman, stay out of this. You're a woman, don't fight. You're a woman, I should protect you, not you me. You're a woman, you should marry and be a housewife." And so on.

See, I don't want to need to label myself as "not a woman" to justify my interests, hobbies, likes, wants and needs. My gender-non-conforming mother taught me that these things have nothing to do with gender identity so STOP JUSTIFYING SEXISM (however benevolent it may be) BY ACCUSING PEOPLE OF INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY!

I JUST WANT TO BE MYSELF!!

But Hakuouki KW/EB didn't allow me to.

The closest I got was in Souji's route but he has possessive tendencies and his good ending makes us into husband and wife who have no social life and have nothing to live for. Whoopwhoop.

I hugged my knees, watching the flickering flames as I worried about what I would speak about what I had heard. Even though I was skeptical of her words, I didn't know if everyone would believe me if I suddenly spoke of it...

Harada: Chizuru, you've been silent for a while now, did something happen?

Toudou: Are you feeling uncomfortable/sick?

Harada: Is that so, Chizuru?

Yukimura: No, it's not like that... there's something I actually need to tell everyone.

Okita:...So, the girl who was with those guys told you something?

Yukimura: Yes. At that time, I asked her about some things I was worried about... but I couldn't believe it myself, and I don't know if anyone would believe what I'm going to say.

Saito: Exactly what did she tell you? Tell us.

I told them that this was a world called "Shinga", and that this place was called the Uesugi Domain. There was also the existences of what they had been fighting a while ago, which were known as "Yakuma"...

After shooting a glance at me, Okita-san ran off. He had gone towards the direction of the Yakuma.

Harada: Chizuru, we can't leave you here by yourself, so you should also get ready to go.

Yukimura: O-Okay.

Toudou: The people in the village might have been attacked, so I'll be going first!

Saito: Sano, Yukimura will be in your care.

Harada: Oh, leave it to me.

Yukimura: Everyone, please be careful!

Afterwards, the Shinsengumi fought along side them once again. White blades tore through the darkness, and silenced the low roars——

Naoe Kanetsugu: I didn't expect to run into you again in a place like this.

Okita: I also never expected that someone would disturb [one of my] fights for two consecutive days.

Naoe Kanetsugu: Ha!? It's natural for us to protect our people!

Uesugi Kagekatsu: Kagekatsu... you still need to express your gratitude.

Okita: I don't remember doing anything to for you all to be thanking me for.

Naoe Kanetsugu:...You have protected the people who live in Kenshin-sama's domain. Thank you very much.

Uesugi Kagekatsu: Thank you...

Hearing their frank words of gratitutde, we truly couldn't hide our shock. Perhaps it was because we were usually looked down upon in Kyoto.

Toudou: I'm a little confused, I thought these gus would be more aggressive… Could it be that they're not bad people?

Harada: If only it were that simple.

Toudou: I know, I don't trust them either.

Okita: Okay, okay, this will get nowhere if this continues. Hajime-kun, the discussions will be left to you.

Saito:…Understood.

Saito-san still maintained his usual attitude, and faced them [before] speaking.

Saito: Are you here to arrest us?

Uesugi Kagekatsu: No... we came to assist you.

Saito: How can you say that?

Naoe Kanetsugu: Your existence might be important to us.

Saito: Although I don't know if [we] would be of importance, we actually wanted to talk to you.

Uesugi Kagekatsu:...Nn. But, is that okay? Didn't you want to freely look around?

Saito: No need. I wanted to talk to you first. Would this be convenient?

Naoe Kanetsugu:...I understand, then come with me.

Not knowing what was meant by "important existences", we ended up falling them while feeling bewildered.

Hijikata:...Just when I wanted to say that we finally found someone, what the hell are those guys doing?

Hijikata, who had been hiding in the shadows of the trees, whispered as he watched the other's figures in the distance.

Hijikata: Yamazaki, do you know anything?

Yamazaki: No. Before I left, everyone concluded that they should keep some distance away from that group and meet up with the Vice-Commander first.

While saying "I would have thought that too", Hijikata gripped his chin with his hand and looked back at their disappearing figures.

Hijikatata: Why couldn't those people just wait there?

Kazama: Haha, they're just a bunch of dogs who can't even wait.

Nagakura: You're not in the position to say that to us!

Kazama: As the saying goes, the weaker the dog, is, the louder it barks.

Hijikata: Your prattling is noisy. I'm thinking about some things s shut up.

When he had opened his eyes, he was already in this forest.

Hijikata could only remember that he was about to carry out an assignment, and then Kazama suddenly appeared.

Seven Nights, Chapter 5

When Chizuru opens her eyes again, what remains of the day's light has faded, the house shrouded in a cloak of darkness. In stillness. Yamazaki’s breath, ragged, fans across her exposed collarbone, sending shivers across her skin.

It’s been mere moments, but she can still feel the shape of his mouth there, the cool patch of damp skin conjuring a strange sort of jealousy in the rest of her body. What might it feel like to have his mouth sucking on the crease of her elbow, the heat and subsequent chill as his teeth scrape the inner of her wrist?

A soft sound escapes her, fingers clutching at his jinbei, and Yamazaki jolts, openly studying the shape of her mouth.

They stare at each other, panting, as the hungry glow of his eyes slowly fading into the surrounding dark; the silver strands of his hair once again melding with the shadows all around them. But still, she can feel his gaze on her, can imagine his mouth - so close - descending on hers once more.

Heart pounding, head dizzy, she feels him tense beneath her hands, uncertain, and then-

And then he shifts forward, the pressure of his thigh between her legs starling a gasp past her lips. “Su-”

“Oi! ” Ibuki’s voice is too loud, too close, and Yamazaki jerks away. “Is everyone alright in there?!”
