Tbh in the past I have struggled to know what to comment on fics just because I forget Literally Every Detail I liked by the time I reach the end of the chapter.
But I wanted to get better at leaving more in depth comments, because honestly, offering a few words of encouragement in exchange for enjoying literal hours of someone else's work and efforts is Such an important way of suppourting artists of any medium.
So! I started to write down almost all the things I liked about the chapter in a notes app as I read, and at the end, the whole thing gets pasted into the comments box.
It's basically a liveblog to the author of my thoughts/emotions while reading; little acknowledgements of the things that stood out to me; characters/dialogues/scenes/plot devices I found impactful, funny, endearing, etc.
It's helped a lot with feeling like I'm actually conveying my appreciation and enjoyment of a fic to the one who wrote it, and I don't have to worry about forgetting the things I liked, or leaving comments that feel impersonal.
Another thing I tried a while ago was just writing down at least three things (or more) that I liked in the chapter as I read it, but I much prefer the live blog method.
If you, like me, find yourself staring blankly at the empty commenting box more often than not, I definitely recommend trying this <3
