The Yakuza's Bias Volume 1: Stan Culture X Criminal Underworld
Tumblr media
Teki Yatsuda, the author of The Yakuza's Bias, has now had both of their works licensed in English within a single year. Considering there's only two however, there's almost more than a world of difference between the tragic and heart wrenching one shot A Home Far Away, and the incredibly humorous and over the top The Yakuza's Bias. Does that difference stop either from being outstanding reads? Absolutely not.
A Yakuza boss stanning a K-Pop idol isn't exactly the kind of thing you'd think of when "gag" or "comedy" manga comes to mind, but it's here, and I had no idea I needed it this bad. Yatsuda's character designs continue to be incredible, and their art remains impressively detailed and expressive in all the right ways. In this case, more than the subtle emotions and conflictions that plagued Yatsuda's last suite of characters, this time around it's all about conveying the crazy, and they nailed it.
Tumblr media
Yatsuda's able to reconcile their very detailed and sharp character designs with smoother and more simple ones to sell the comedy, and I think it's something that should really be commended. Finding a way to preserve style through a lack of detail isn't easy, and they make it seem like it's effortless with the amount of variations they have throughout the first volume.
Similarly effortless is Yatsuda's merging of Yakuza and idol culture. Two extremes within the social sphere that, rather than clash, mesh hilariously well, and produce scenes like this one
Tumblr media
And in truth, I think that effortless meshing of idol and Yakuza comes down to Yatsuda's approach. There's a clear lacking of a straight man through effectively all of its humor, so it's almost similar to something like D-Frag! in how it approaches comedy. Just so off the rails that you have nothing to compare it to, so it feels perfectly at home so long as it's funny.
And funny it is. The lead male character, Ken (the second in command of the clan he's a part of), has such a ridiculously fun personality. He's the kind of person that once he starts talking he can't shut up, and it produces some of the funniest skits and ideas you'll come across, like getting into a deep conversation about the idol group MNW with a hostess at a club that gets so emotional you end up buying a couple of bottles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Past that, there's not really much else to say. It's incredibly hilarious, and continually finds ways to reinvent the wheel with its humor a la The Way of The HouseHusband, and it comfortably wades into the details and world of idol and stan culture. It provides all sorts of info and discussions surrounding this like merch swaps and social media cliques, and even stages several idol arguments in different capacities.
Comedy manga is definitely one of the hardest things to sell people on because of varying senses of humor, but I can't stress enough that people should be trying The Yakuza's Bias. K-Pop fans and Yakuza (parody) fans will certainly fall in love with this first volume, but even outside of those specifics, I think there's plenty for everyone to laugh at with this outlandish concept from Yatsuda. So, if you can, go out and buy this first volume, and if you can't, at least give it a shot online.

[Translation] Kaseifu-san no Kiken na Oshigoto ~Irainushi wa Teoi no Yakuza~
CV: Kawamura Masato
t/n: Note that I’ll be translating things a bit more liberally than usual for the sake of flow and effect. As it turns out, I didn’t play those Yakuza games for nothing. *Kiryu voice* ikuze!!
Track 1: A Fake Contract
[limping footsteps] [door opens]
Oh! You’re here.
[MC gets pushed around]
Oi oi, show a little more courtesy to our guest. She’ll have to work for us from now on.
[MC struggles]
See? She’s getting real scared. Hey, Shima! Take off the blindfold for her. You can free her arms too.
[removes blindfold and handcuffs]
[smokes] Is the brightness glaring? Well, you were blindfolded for more than half an hour. Your eyes are gonna take a while to recover.
Sorry that we pretty much kidnapped you. We can’t afford to give away this location.
Can’t blame you for being so shocked. Per the plan, you were supposed to work for a disabled old couple at their house starting today. But when you went to the place that your company instructed you to go, you got surrounded by a bunch of shady men before they blindfolded you and tied you up. That’s some tough luck you had!
[smokes]
Tell me the jobs on your contract.
Hmph. Meal preparation, house cleaning, laundry, and the old couple’s daily living assistance… Well, it’s pretty much the same. For the next two months, you just need to live here and do the jobs you just said. The only difference’s that your client isn’t an old couple but me right here.

February Finds
Tumblr media
February was a great month. I was lucky enough to get hold of not one but four of my most-desired doujinshi at auction, including my single most-wanted doujin. The doujin I’ve been hunting since I started collecting doujinshi. The doujin that I gallantly declared I “would pay anything for” if I could ever find it for sale. Also known as: ひとくさり, or Hitokusari, published by Rooftop Kantorera (hovel).
Tumblr media
Top L-R: Pandora no sera, Death & Rebirth, Kamori san no oshigoto Bottom: Hitokusari
Originally launched at HaruComicCity20 in 2015, Hitokusari is a collection of full-colour Gintama illustrations that look exactly like animated movie stills. The theme of the doujin is one-scene images (”hitokusari” means “one scene”), and each glorious colour image evokes a story - you can easily picture them as part of a Gintama movie that never saw the light of day. They vary from images that take place in Bushuu with a younger Gin/Hijikata to more modern day settings. Although each represents its own story, a number relate to each other and you get a sense of continuity between them. My favourites are the ones that look as though they’re blending Gintama with recognisable, modern day objects and clothing - such as the guys playing Mahjongg while wearing yakuza-style suits, or eating at a yakiniku-type restaurant. All of the images feature the Shinsengumi, Gintoki or both. At 50 pages this is a bumper doujin that I’m absolutely delighted with - plus it completes my Rooftop Kantorera Gintama collection, a circle I have been collecting pretty much from the beginning. If you like colour artbooks and are a fan of Gin/the Shinsengumi, you’ll love it - track down a copy on Yahoo! Auctions. It might be worth mentioning that there’s no explicit yaoi in sight here, although I’m sure there is some mild BL suggested in the images. Good, clean fun for all ages.
Pandora no sera is another book that I’d been looking for for a while. I recently got really into FFVII doujinshi, particularly ones featuring Vincent Valentine (I’ve mentioned before that I hold a candle for ol’ Vin); out of these, by far my favourite have been those drawn by K.Haruka, who’s published under a few names including BE HAPPY. Almost all K.Haruka Vincent works have CidxVicent pairings (I have one which is about Vincent and Yuffie - I think it’s the exception to the rule), but a lot of them - most of them, actually - are gag-yaoi (either soft or hentai). K.Haruka produced Vincent doujinshi for over a decade, and her style really evolved from typical pointy 90s-manga in which Vin basically looks like a girl to a much more sophisticated, more masculine handling of the character. This is one of her later FFVII books (2009) and my favourite in terms of how Vin is represented physically: he still looks like a guy. A very hot guy. You can see the evolution of Vin from 2000-2009 here.
Next up is Death & Rebirth published by STEAL. Death & Rebirth is part of a triumvirate of doujinshi that became hugely popular because they featured SephirothxVincent as the pairing - not the most common of pairings and so very desirable amongst collectors, plus the artwork’s pretty good for 90s doujinshi. The other two SephxVin doujins by this circle are Satan Impact and Dynamite Passion. I already have Satan Impact, which is my preferred of the two and contains a really intense combat sequence that’s beautifully drawn. Both of the ones I have (and I think the same goes for Dynamite Passion) are very dramatic doujinshi in which Vincent’s fighting Sephiroth both physically and emotionally - ignore the covers, the art inside is much better. Sadly the artist’s Pixiv doesn’t have any images any more, but I’m sure Google has a few examples.
Finally, there’s Kamori san no oshigoto published by Imperial Wrath. This is quite a story-driven doujinshi, and I have to confess - I’m not entirely sure what’s going on in it. Something about lizards. I think. Anyway, Imperial Wrath doujins have a very clean, very uncluttered feel about them, and the R18 ones are incredibly steamy and a bit more interesting and original than a lot of the really generic GinxHiji or HijixGin doujinshi out there. This one is an all ages doujin so none of that, but it was the last book I needed for my IW collection.
These 4 books mean more to me than any others that I have bought. That feeling of searching, diligently trawling used doujinshi sites every day for months and finally finding what you were looking for…it’s stressful, exhilarating, exhausting, elating, and a host of other sensations that I’m sure other avid collectors understand. Part of me is kind of sad that the search for these is over - what will I do now? Then I remember - there are still missing links in my collection. There are still more to find. Only now, I get to look while enjoying these babies. Gotta catch em all, right?
Let me know how it felt to finally get your hands on your doujinshi grail!
