I’m rewatching dita no ace (fourth time) and the yakushi vs seido game still gets me. When sawamura gets hit and gives up a home run and everyone is trying to cheer him up and he looks distraught and depressed and has his eyeliner (or eye bags) looks it just breaks me. I remembered all this and it still hurts. Can’t wait to feel more pain in the future (yips anyone)

I love how Kuramochi called Kawakami the “Rear Guard” here.
In pre-WW1 battles, the Rear Guard unit of an army fight off pursuing enemies when the army is on retreat. They protect their comrades from the back so that majority of the army will live to fight another day. If the army is on the offensive, the rear guard protects their backs from attack. In some armies, the rear guard are elite units strong enough to stand on their own.
So for me, Kawakami being rear guard is very appropriate and now he leveled up to Guardian Deity.
Seido being as strong as they are is because they know Kawakami is there to guard their backs.

Listen.
The second summer Ichidai vs Yakushi match is such a personally offensive match to me. This match hurts my heart and soul more than any other match and Tera-san was so necessarily cruel to my good Boy.
So the Ichidai vs Yakushi match obviously ended with Yakushi losing, which ultimately doesn't bother me because if they had won they just would have gone on to lose to Seido anyway. Losing happens, it sucks.
But no what is personally offensive is how they lost, specifically that Tera-san made it Raichi's fault.
Raichi was at fault for the loss in two ways:
One: He made the initial error that caused Ichidai to be in a scoring position
and
Two: He was steps away from getting the out and prolonging the game.
Now, while these instances aren't exactly his fault, and there's no guarantee they would have won had he got the out, he was the ultimate catalyst for their loss and he takes the personal blame for it:
What is so unfair about Tera-san making it Raichi's "fault" that they lost the game is that there were 3 main factors to Raichi ultimately costing them the game. These 3 factors are:
-Raichi's Past
-Raichi's Love for Baseball
-Raichi's Talent
How do these 3 factors contribute it to being "Raichi's fault"? Let's count them down shall we?
3. Raichi's Past
As we know Raichi and Raizou don't have the best past, and following the divorce, Raichi and Raizou didn't have much for themselves. At the worst (if BatMan Under the Bridge is Canon) they were homeless and at best they were struggling financially and in debt. Raizou couldn't afford to send him to little league and Raichi was unlucky enough to go to a junior high without a baseball team.
This past meant that Raichi didn't get to play baseball until High School, meaning he is wholly inexperienced in the basics of the game. This inexperience often lead to instances of him making errors and his inexperience had an impact on his playing in the Ichidai vs Yakushi match:
But you know what else leads to Raichi making errors?
2. Raichi's Love for Baseball
It's no secret that Raichi loves baseball. So much so that he often times gets too excited while playing which causes him to shake violently and often to make more errors. Similar to the error he made during the Ichidai vs Yakushi match, in which his teammate has to tell him to calm down.
What is also significant in Raichi's Love of Baseball is his true and genuine enjoyment and love for the sport. Unlike many of the other characters, Raichi doesn't play to win, Raichi plays because he loves the sport. Raichi seems to acknowledge winning only as a means to playing more games, and cares less about victory than he does about playing the game.
This of course makes the loss even more bitter because of how truly he loves the sport and how much he wanted to keep playing that summer with his team.
And finally,
1. Raichi's Talent
Raichi's talent is the final contributing factor for the loss being "his fault" because it was him, through his talent, that got Amahisa Kousei to love and be passionate about baseball again.
If it hadn't been for Raichi being so unbelievably talented and crushing Manaka, Amahisa may have stayed away from Baseball and Ichidai Sankou may not have been the powerhouse they were without him. Raichi influenced the pitcher that ultimately came around to beat them.
It's unfair enough that Raichi's past, something he had no control over, and one of his best traits, his love for the sport, were factors leading to their lose but even worse, Raichi's own talent was used again him by Tera-san.
All these factors culminated into Yakushi losing against Ichidai. Which was really awful not because they lost but because Tera-san made it Raichi's fault, for which he openly blames himself for.
Raichi not only truly and dearly loves baseball, but he also cares deeply about his team. Yakushi was the first and only team that Raichi has ever played for, and he loves them dearly. So much so that he plays for them, instead of himself, which ultimately causes him to fail.
And now he feels as though he has let his team down and ruined the summer for the 3rd years, but not just any 3rd years, the pitcher he admires the most, Sanada. He feels as though he let Sanada down.
To which Tera-san rubbed salt in the wound by having Sanada apologize to Raichi for failing to stop them, because he knows Raichi and he knows that Raichi will feel guilty about the loss, which he does.
To make matters worse, and I've discussed this in length before, but the Ichidai vs Yakushi match comes directly after we get to see Raichi's mom leaving. Like prior in the series we knew that she left Raizou, but now we got to see her leave and why.
Like she left over Raichi's and Raizou's genuine love and obsession with the sport. They loved the sport so much so that she left to avoid being caught up in their lifestyle and coming second to baseball. Immediately after, they lose, which is just so hard to take. Like the Todoroki's lost their wife/mother to baseball and still lost to Ichidai?? Hurtful.
AND to be the absolute icing on the cake, Raichi hasn't reappeared in the manga since his loss. Meaning the last time we truly saw him, tears were streaming down his face as he blamed himself for ruining his teams summer.
So yea, I am pretty personally offended by this match.
TL:DR
Todoroki Raichi is one of the most well written characters and Tera-san did him dirty. Also he's criminally underrated.
#i love him so much#i have thought long and hard about this match#it hurts my very soul#safe to say i wont have an easy time watching it when it becomes animated#todoroki raichi#daiya no ace#ace of diamond#daiya no a#daiya no a act ii#diamond no ace#daiya spoilers#sanada shunpei#todoroki raizou#yakushi high school

Daiya no Ace act II Thoughts
I've been writing about Starmyu mostly, but the other anime I'm currently watching is also Daiya no Ace act 2. I cannot count how many times I reread act 2. I can, however, say that I've waited 16 weeks for them to animate one of the scenes I liked out of the whole manga thus far. But, the point of this post is I wanted to let out how sad episode 17 turned out.
This episdoe marked Sawamura's growth and break from being dependent of Miyuki to being more independent. I wished Terajima narrated what Sawamura was thinking while watching Inashiro vs. Teito, but at least we'll know it has to do with pitch calling.
Episode 17's closing was done prefectly. The manga didn't really affected me as much, but when they animated it, my gosh, I got tears. 3 months guys. 😭 Each memory scene while Miyuki was thinking to himself, showed that Miyuki is pretty caring even though he seems like he doesn't much. Sawamura and Furuya has come so far as pitchers. Every team member has come far. This episode also marked a start to a change in each player from Seido. Sawamura really did wake everyone up.
Currently the manga is at a point where it is a revival game against Ichidai and Yakushi. I don't really care for it, because I just want to watch Seido's next game because of Sawamura. I really cannot wait for what will come next for us viewers.
Thanks for reading. 🙇♀️ I'm not sure if I'll keep writing about Daiya no Ace, since I don't find a lot of people who reads or watches it. So once in a while is good.

looking at the seido vs yakushi game pt 3 and seeing this scene
hurts me just from watching it like I can perfectly imagine what that feels like I've done it way too many times before bc I was horrible at inside pitches lmao
hitting a pitch with the very end of ur bat or too close to the grip like Nori did really sends a shock thru ur hands bc the bat vibrates when struck. basically ur hands will feel like when you hit that funny bone in ur elbow on something, it gets super tingly and numb and it's the WORST
and since Raichi throws so hard Nori's feeling it bad for a long time I'm cringing just thinking about it

COMPILATION OF SAWAMURA EIJUN'S TEARS
a study in how Terajima portrayed his main character while he crying.
chapter 1 - DESTINY'S FATEFUL PITCH
Eijun is in tears after their middle school rubberball team lost in their first and only official game.
note: eyes properly drawn. cheeks red from the emotional exertion, a stead stream of tears and individual drops flowing from his cheeks. There's also snot from his nose brought upon by his crying.
In the two pictures above, Eijun slaps the opposite team because he was angry that they insulted his teammates.
note: cat eyes, pupils not seen, a stream of steady tears.
chapter 3 - DAY OF DEPARTURE
Eijun eventually breaks down crying while the train is in motion. His former team had sent him off in tearful goodbyes.
note: at first we only see his head is bowed. Then a moment later, teardrops start falling. The next panel we see a closeup of his scrunched up face. His eyes are properly drawn too. There's also snot from his nose brought upon by his crying.
chapter 6 -PITCHER ELIMINATION (introduction arc)
Eijun sobs after Kuramochi asks him if he's training to be an Olympic Marathon runner and not a baseball pitcher. He also cries from being manhandled into wrestling moves.
note: played for comedic effect. Appearance of cat-eyes and there is a continuous stream of tears.
chapter 105 - CUTTER (seido vs yakushi act1 summer tournament)
Eijun sobs after Kuramochi taunts him of being a lesser version of a moving-ball pitcher like Sanada.
note: there is an appearance of cat-eyes and there is a continuous stream of liquid from the tear duct. The tears go down in drops after leaving his face. Effect is initially comedic but upon closer inspection of the next panels you see that he was genuinely insecure about it and had to be comforted by Miyuki. Therefore we can say it's semi-comedic.
chapter 192 - SENSE OF REALITY (seido vs inashiro, act1 summer tournament)
Eijun breaks down in tears on the bus after he see Yuuki Tetsuya crying in the seat opposite to him.
note: we cannot see his eyes since they are not drawn in and are also obscured by his bangs. Moreover his face is hooded for effect. His tears are portrayed in drops. This is serious.
chapter 217 - INNER VOICE (seido vs yakushi, act1 yips arc)
Eijun breaks down after being pulled out from the mound in Seido vs. Yakushi scrimmage. He shut down while playing and couldn't pitch neither to the inside nor outside and had to be replaced in the inning that he was subbed in.
note: Eijun's face is entirely covered by a towel, his head is bowed. The panels show individual drips of tears, not a continuous stream like in comedic moments.
note: It was only when Eijun stopped crying/when his tears ran out that we could finally see his face. Note his blank eyes and dark eyebags.
ch 258 - STONE (act 1, fall qualifiers)
Eijun openly cries in happiness while reading manga.
note: Eijun's eyes are shown in this, the continuous stream of tears makes a come back, suggestic the comedic nature of the scene. Moreover this seem to be tears of joy rather than Eijun being genuinely upset.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERTSPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
ACT 2 chapter 305
Sawamura in tears of joy after helping win the Seido vs Inajitsu summer tournament final match. He was holding it in until the medal was hanged on his neck. That's when the tears started flowing.
Note: continuous stream of tears, eyes properly drawn, individual drops. Serious. (But at least these are joyous tears).
Conclusion
If, while crying Eijun has
cat eyes - he's upset but with comedic effect
continuous stream of tears - can be serious but is comedic when there are no individual teardrops
individual tear drops - serious
eyes drawn properly - serious
eyes not shown - serious
Final Thoughts
this was interesting character and manga study for me. I did not expect there to be so much nuance in how Terajima drew things. While reading we now know why some stuff appear serious while other scenes do not. Laying panels all like this gives us an idea of the creative choices mangaka use to depict certain emotions.
Thanks for reading!
.........
EDIT 10/10/21 - WELP SO I SPOILED MYSELF. NOW I HAVE PHOTO OF SAWAMURA CRYING IN THE FINAL.
when i saw the spoiler i was like "that looks too familiar." and here we go! It's basically the same pose! From the eyes, to the tears, to the clenching of teeth, to the repressed shivers! what a payoff!
FEELS LIKE COMING HOME ISN'T IT?
Laying the two panels side by side feels like the end of the journey.
Okaeri.

Ok obviously the finals of this summer has to be inashiro vs seido. The mei/itsuki and sawamura/miyuki parallels are too clear. Also meis graduating so inashiro can be the big bads this season and yakushi can have it back later

Sawamura Eijun Yips Progression
July 31 Sawamura hits Shirakawa on the head in the 9th inning of Seido vs Inashiro Summer Tournament Finals Match.
Aug 2 Sawamura watches the match video with Miyuki and berates himself for being too inexperienced and as a result get affected by the pressure.
Aug 3-6 Sawamura is glad that he can still pitch properly in bullpen.
Aug 7-18 Seido vs. Saitama Sakai Practice Game Furuya pitch 7 innings give up 0 runs; Sawamura pitch 8th-9th inning, give up 0 runs Miyuki comment his pitches trajectory are "too easy", Sawamura tells himself to "Calm down".
Aug 19 Seido vs Kaiyou Practice Game, Furuya pitch 1-6th inning, Sawamura pitches in 6th-9th inning and gives up 1 run due to 1 Hit and 1 Walk in 7th inning. Miyuki comment "I told you trajectory was too easy."
Aug. 27 Seido vs. Chiba Shoudai
before Sawamura is subbed in Miyuki says “Your control was never good to begin with, I wont ask the impossible of you. You pitched the opposite of what I requested. Because your form is unique, it works on practice games. As it is right now, it won’t work against that guy (Todoroki Raichi)”
Sawamura mislocates an inside pitch during the match. Later that night, they did a pitching review and Miyuki says: “That was a completely careless pitch.”
Aug 28 Seido vs Yakushi Practice Game
Sanada, Raichi and Mishima riles up Furuya and Sawamura before the match.
1st inning Furuya: “Can I pitch for the whole game today? My problem is that I don’t have the stamina to pitch late into the game. 3 innings is not enough for me.”
Kataoka: “No way! Instead of pitching for 9 innings it is important to get outs for the sake of the team. This game does not belong to you alone. But well I don’t mind letting you pitch longer, depending on you performance”
4th inning, Furuya is doing well. Sawamura is getting more threatened by him, becomes more tense. (Sawamura was supposed to be subbed in this inning btw. Meanwhile Kataoka was busy fulfilling his promise to Furuya)
Sawamura still doing fine in the bullpen, being loud and annoying while waiting for his turn.
At the 5th inning Sawamura, in the same fashion as Furuya asks Kataoka to be subbed in since that was the initial plan.
Sawamura: “Can I start pitching this inning?“
Kataoka: “You’re on standby.”
Sawamura: “Eh? No but..it’s already 5 innings according to the plan... (implying Furuya was supposed to pitch 3 innings and then hand over the mound to sawamura and then to kawakami probably)”
Kataoka: “That’s enough just be on standby. Being ready based on the situation is also A RELIEF PITCHER’S DUTY.”
Note that the pitchers were not briefed on this. Nothing in Miyuki’s pitcher review the night before implied this. Kataoka basically declared here that he already considered Furuya as Ace despite knowing how much the two were desperately vying for the position.
Also everyone (Miyuki, Furuya, the fielders, bench players) heard this except for Kawakami and Kariba who were in the bullpen.
Sawamura released his anger and tired himself in the bullpen. He is still up to his usual antics though. Which is quite positive of him after being cruelly shot down by Kataoka like that.
After the 6th inning Furuya is sent to the outfield and Sawamura is called in to pitch. Kataoka tells Furuya that he’ll rely on him in the Fall too (in front of everyone except for the pitchers in the bullpen.)
As if forgetting everything he said the day before (that he does not expect control from Sawamura and will not ask the impossible from him), Miyuki tells him to be ready to pitch cutters to the cleanups batting next.
Sanada is pitching well at top of the 7th. Sawamura recognizes that as the presence of the Ace. and becomes more tense remembering how Kataoka casually relegated him to “Relief Pitcher” in the 5th inning.
Bottom of 7th inning First on the box is 3rd batter Akiba
pitch1: fastball to the knees, sawamura throws to the dirt
pitch2: high inside which turned into a ball
pitch3: fastball to the knees, sawamura mislocates to middle, akiba lands a hit
4th batter Raichi
pitch1: Fastball Outside corner, Ball (Miyuki: Your pitch didn’t deviate much from the position I indicated.) -> Sawamura could still pitch a proper outside fastball here
pitch2: inside cutter towards the chest (front door cutter), Sawamura mislocates to middle, Raichi hits 2 RBI homerun Miyuki runs up to Sawamura on the mound and says this:
^^^ remember this was the guy who had been nagging about control for the past 3 weeks
5th batter Mishima
lands a hit
6th batter Sanada
pitch1 Inside Fastball, ball thrown to outside, ball
pitch2 inside crossfireto batter chest, mislocates down middle, sanada sends it to centerfield
7th batter
given a walk
Miyuki visits the mound for the 2nd time: “Don’t mind the trajectory much, your pitches have power. It’s alright, everyone is here.”
^^^ ONCE MORE dont forget this was the guy who’d been NAGGING ABOUT CONTROL AND SAWAMURA BEING CARELESS FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS
8th batter
Miyuki set up for an inside pitch AGAIN, Sawamura throws it high up to the fence. This results in a passed ball and Sawamura freezes up and is unable to cover the plate, letting all 3 runners come home
Miyuki asks Kataoka to pull him out. And Furuya fkiing Satoru says this
and this boy. despite all the sht people have said to him. from Miyuki to Kataoka to Furuya, still managed to apologize for his performance.
Kataoka’s horrible coaching + Miyuki’s blindness and shtty aggressiveness +The rival being insensitive af.
= HOW ONE KILLS A PITCHER’S SOUL
What could have been done right?
Kataoka should have talked to Sawamura personally after the deadball that it was not his fault and it’s normal.
The timing of telling Sawamura he has been relegated to Relief Pitcher WAS HORRIBLE. If you look at it Furuya asked to be put in the match for the whole 9 innings which was not practical given his neglect of improving his stamina for the past month. Sawamura just realistically asked to be subbed in the inning that they planned. Kataoka did not have to respond like that as if he just wanted Sawamura to stfu and wait.
Miyuki should have talked to Sawamura what was wrong in the first 3 practice matches. Did he not study which pitches had the weak trajectories? Did he not see a pattern? Sawamura pitched a total of 8 innings in the practice matches before facing the Yakushi batters. If it was not obvious yet then,
Miyuki for fukcs sake should have stopped asking for CONSECUTIVE INSIDE PITCHES after Raichi’s AB in the Yakushi practice because he already knew Sawamura kept mislocating them. Pitching to the inside takes a LOT of accuracy and courage and Miyuki kept demanding that from Sawamura again and again to every batter that came up in the 7th inning.
FURUYA SHOULD HAVE SHUT UP.
ARGUMENTS
“sawamura needed to be broken in yakushi practice match to see what really was wrong!”
I disagree. He was pitching decently in the practice matches before the yakushi practice match. Only the insides were mislocated. It could have been more manageable when his trauma was only hitting Shirakawa to the head. Now his memories regarding inside pitches have Raichi’s homer and the rest of yakushi batters hits + getting pulled off the mound in the inning he was sent in.
Listen. Sawamura CAN pitch outside low fasballs DECENTLY as early as Act 1 Seido vs Yakushi Summer Tournament. But this tragic practice match vs Yakushi sealed that ability too. It would take the whole of September for him to even get back the feel of pitching proper outside pitches and then the rest of October to get the rest of his pitching back.
“Miyuki was just trying his best because he was the new captain and he’s so young and prone to make mistakes.”
I also disagree with putting off the blame from Miyuki like this. What he did to Sawamura in the Yakushi practice match was a repetition of 9th inning Seido vs Inashiro. He has not learned anything yet. At this point Miyuki does not deserve to be called “best catcher of his generation.” He broke his own pitcher and that’s that.
(granted miyuki helped put sawamura back together but that essay has been done countless times already)
