Note 2: They can use their secondary weapons like Goblin Slayer's shield, but they MUST primarily fight with their swords.
Note 3: I took two characters, one male and one female, from six different Light Novel Imprints this time around. I hope you all understand and can still enjoy this.

Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi died on this day, April 21, 1650
Born in 1607 to Yagyu Munenori, sword tutor to the Shoguns, Ieyasu, Hidetada and Iemitsu, Yagyu Jubei is said to have been the most talented and gifted of the Yagyu clan’s many prized swordsmen.
In 1616, records show that Jubei was acting on his father’s behalf as an attendant and sword instructor to Tokugawa Hidetada and his son, Iemitsu, however, there is a large blank until 1631, when it appears he was either dismissed or suddenly resigned his position.
The following 12 years of Jubei’s life are also unknown, until he was re-instated at the age of 36 as attendant to the Shogun following a brief demonstration of his martial skills.
While he remained in Edo for some time, he again left the Shogun’s court and retired to his family lands in Nara after the death of his father, Munenori in 1646. During his time in Edo, he wrote a book on swordsmanship and the teachings of the wandering monk, Takuan Soho, titled “Tsuki no Sho” or “Excerpts from the Moon”, in which some light is shed on his missing 12 years, suggesting he had undertaken a Musha Shugyo, or Warriors’ Pilgrimage.
Yagyu Jubei died under what are cited as uncertain circumstances, and even the usually highly detailed Yagyu clan diaries fail to clarify the reasons. Rumors suggest his having died from a heart attack, either while falconing or fishing,…or that he was assassinated by his half brother, Yagyu Tomonori’s retainers. Yagyu Jubei’s “missing years” has led to much speculation, and has been the background to many stories, movies, dramas and TV shows.
Despite the story that Yagyu Jubei wore an eye patch to cover an eye damaged in a duel, or, according to other stories, by his father accidentally during a training session, contemporary portraits of Jubei show him with two functioning eyes.

Off-topic, but have ever been had an interest in the lore and character backgrounds of the SamSho series?
I’ve seen the original OVA, though I don’t know much about the RPGs or NeoGeo64 games that supposedly take place later on in the series’ timeline.
I’m also roughly aware that many of the characters are based on actual historical figures in Japan’s real-life history, the most obvious being:
Hattori Hanzo > Famous Ninja by the same name
Amakusa Shiro Tokisada > (In)famous Christian Missionary/Cultist?
Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi > Romanticized Samurai
Miyamoto Musashi > Haohmaru is derived from him
Tokugawa Iemitsu > Yoshitora is derived from him
Oda Nobunaga > Gaoh is derived from him
Sasaki Kojiro > Ukyo is derived from him
And many others you might find derived from anime shows like Yu Yu Hakusho, Ninja Scroll, and Rorouni Kenshin.
Though, as a side note, it appears that:
Samurai Spirits (1600s) > Last Blade (1700s) > blank spot > KOF (1900s)
It’s implied by KOF14 that they all presumably share the same timeline (though that might just only apply to KOF’s timeline).
That’s about the jist of what I’m aware of.

His Children
Munenori’s children, Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi and Yagyu Munefuyu, both became excellent swordsman under their father’s teachings.
However, their relationship was strained; They struggled constantly under their father’s relentless teachings, sometimes even leading to wounds (such as Mitsuyoshi’s eye). Munenori had their best interests at heart and deeply cared for them, but he did not show it being the stoic man he was. This led to a very ‘professional’ fatherhood, but a distant relationship.
Inside, Munenori regrets this deeply, and knows he was not the father he could have been

Sonny Chiba in one of his most famous roles (and certainly the character he portrayed the most), real-life legendary swordsman Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi.  Chiba-san played Jubei in 4 films, 91 television episodes over 3 series, and 1 television movie.
Jubei was the scion of the powerful Yagyu clan, who were sword instructors to the Tokugawa shoguns.  Depending on your view of history the Yagyu could be good guys, or bad guys like they were in the Lone Wolf and Cub manga, film series, and television series,
Despite being such a popular character in Japanese popular culture, surprisingly little is known of Jubei’s life.  The Yagyu clan’s secret scrolls, which have extensive records about all the family members, contain a dearth of information about Jubei.
What is known is that he was considered the best swordsman in the Yagyu clan; he abruptly left the Shogun’s service and disappeared for 12 years, during which time no one knew where he was, what he was doing, or if he was even alive; he returned to the public eye and briefly rejoined the Shogun’s service at the age of 36; and he died under mysterious circumstances at the age of 43.
That right there is a perfect invitation to writers, artists, and filmmakers to fill-in the details however they see fit.  Which explains why Jubei remains such a popular character to this day; anyone can tell any sort of story about him, and who’s to say they’re wrong?
As for the eyepatch, many historians believe Jubei did not wear one, and portraits from his lifetime show him with both eyes.  However, it somehow, over time, got added to the legend and has now become his standard appearance.
