People should talk about Yaad and Thistle more. Weird granduncle that killed your dad in a petty impulsive punitive act, leaving you very scared of him as you live under his control for centuries. Imagine growing up hearing stories of the King’s brother, the kind, clever, collected and calm advisor and right hand man. But only knowing him by how warped he’s become, violent and erratic. He punishes you, too, robbing you of any agency by putting you inside of a doll. And then despite, he becomes catatonic and you’re left to take care of him in his brother’s body while he thinks you’re him. And then you see those slivers of that nice caring person you heard so much about in your childhood a millenium ago, and as he babbles about Delgal thinking he’s you, recalling memories and old habits, you wonder about how things must have used to be, before, and how they’ve changed irreparably. Today is melancholic again.

Yaad being like, Thistle’s sort of great-nephew who’s lived most of his life seeing him as being out of his mind and only a mirage of the noble attentive person he once was, now having to take care of him, someone who was an older familial figure to him… Seeing him gentle, soft and unhurried after all this time spent in an emotional anxious paranoid frenzy... Yaad and Thistle post-canon is so special

Delgal’s first birthday on the surface is spent in a quiet room with bated breath.

It’s odd having two birthdays and Yaad doesn’t want to insist upon himself. That’s why he doesn’t tell anyone, the latter date arriving without fanfare. It’s just him, Thistle, and a tiny cake between them (baked by Yaad’s own hand; he’s been taking lessons from Senshi).

Yaad hums a birthday tune to himself, trying not to seem overly arrogant – it is actually for his grandfather, he reminds himself – and says, “Happy birthday. Would you like some cake?”

Thistle is unresponsive like usual, with half-lidded eyes and a limp body. He’s not expressionless, though, Yaad can tell from the months spent caring for him. Today’s Thistle is more peaceful. His face isn’t as tight as usual, his eyebrows aren’t furrowed. He doesn’t resent this, like he resents other days – being bathed and dressed and fed.

“Would you like some cake?” Yaad tries again.

Thistle focuses on the man in front of him. “Delgal,” he whispers.

“Yes,” Yaad smiles. He decided not to ‘reveal’ himself, not to destroy what tentative bond to another person Thistle has left.

He holds Thistle’s warm, small hand and manipulates his fingers to stay wrapped around the spoon Yaad gives him. Thistle’s grip is present, and not particularly weak. This must be a good sign. Yaad guides Thistle’s hand to the plate in his own, helps him cut off a small piece of the already-small cake, and brings it to Thistle’s lips.

Yaad hates forcing him to eat. Thistle fights it on the best of days, but malnourishment is a factor for both of them now that they aren’t in the dungeon. Yaad expects another similar reaction, and this time he won’t press it. This is supposed to be a celebration, after all.

But Thistle doesn’t resist. His mouth opens, just slightly, and with great effort he moves forward to take the bite into his mouth. Yaad tries not to show his surprise and tries harder not to praise Thistle. Biting his tongue is difficult.

Thistle chews for a long time. Yaad doesn’t tell him to swallow like usual. He takes the spoon back from Thistle and has some of the cake for himself.

It doesn’t taste very good. Well, whatever taste has become for Yaad now – that is, he hasn’t quite gotten his senses back. The cake isn’t quite spongy enough, and rather dry. The batter had tasted fine, as per Senshi’s opinion, but somewhere along the way it got messed up.

He’s about to apologize when he notices Thistle’s expression, much stronger than before. His eyebrows furrowed. His face tight. “Sorry, I know it’s–” Yaad begins at the same time as Thistle speaks.

“Del-gal…” It’s more of a squeak, a tiny vocalization Yaad almost drowns out. “Your birthday…”

Yaad’s taken aback for a second. “My… yes–”

“You always missed it…”

He’s crying. Thistle’s crying.

Yaad swallows his piece of cake. He didn’t know if that was true or not, really – they lost track of time in the Kingdom well before Delgal died. It was only now that they were in the real world that their faint memories of birthdays became relevant again.

“You always missed it,” Thistle sobs.

Yaad hugs him tight, and he feels Thistle’s small hands wrapping around him.

“I know. I’m sorry.”

i love how simple the composition is and yet how much detail it holds. the white void around the hug invokes the feeling that nothing else around this moment really matters, like I almost see it like the state of yaad and thistle in that moment. the little bits of grass and life almost feel like they began growing for them just to cushion them. how tired and young thistle looks, like when you hold a child after they fall asleep in the car. its an unusually peaceful scene after everything you've seen these two have gone through, and what thistle had done... its just really nice. its nice to see a calm like this. i like the view of the castle. but I keep staring at the detail of the blanket.
