July first. Jason's birthday. Oh, gods, he hoped he had remembered it correctly, or this would all be a major screw-up.

He checked if the candle on the cake was still alight for the twentieth time. Jason would show up any time now, all he had to do was—

The doorknob of the Zeus cabin twisted. Nico practically jumped. "Hello? Who—"

Jason, he thought, immediately relaxing. "Surprise!"

Jason was still standing in the doorway, half outside, half inside, his mouth frozen open in shock. Had he done something wrong?

"Jason?" He asked, gently, walking up to the other boy. "Are you ok?"

Jason blinked, then looked away. "Yeah, no, I— I'm sorry, I—" He sniffed, pressed a fist to his mouth.

"Are you crying?" Nico asked, taking Jason's hand in his, moving it gently away from his face, and letting their eyes meet. Jason took a deep breath in.

"Not a bad cry," he said, his eyes wet. "I... Gods, Nico, I love you so much, I..."

Nico's eyes widened. Had Jason just... confessed?

"I know you don't feel the same," Jason added, quickly, "but I just... Thank you. Thank you so much. For everything."

Jason stood there, silently, hands clasped together in front of him, while Nico processed the information. "I'm sorry," he said, softly, "I really should go—"

And Nico did the most unexpected thing.

He kissed him.

"Jason," he said when the broke apart, memorizing the feel of the other boy's lips, "I love you, you idiot. Now, come." He gestured to the cake. "Make a wish!"
