The following description was written by Sloane Angel Hilton, the creator of the facebook group for this aesthetic: Its rise and fall between the years 1996-2002 - a movement in pop culture that is spawned from the research of The Y2K Aesthetic Institute. A notable shift in the visual mood of pop culture happened during the turn of the millennium, but it wasn’t Y2K Aesthetic. One thing I have found is that it was en vogue to be between 25-35, the prime age of Gen X at this time. I think of the “Music First” era of Vh1 programming. Contrary to contemporaneous Y2K Aesthetic, and also McBling style of the early 2000s, Gen X Y/AC models in editorial fashion or artist marketing were much more "natural". You will see tons of nude lipstick, hair parted down the middle or natural textured hair, natural leathers, knee high boots, duster jackets, natural and muted colors - especially greens, beiges, tans, greys, and black. Design and fashion was moving from 60s revival into early 70s. Retro-futurism was Y2K Aesthetic, but Gen X YAC was more terrestrial. Its futurism was a mix of sterile and organic. McBling was a full blown disco revival, but here, we just see hints of the 70s. Depictions of city life through a colonialist lens. First wave gentrification. Urban life influenced graphic design, such as in the use of Helvetica as inspired by the NYC subway signs. The rise of a minimalist design revival. On the runway, the rise/peak of the modern supermodel - Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Linda Evangelista, who were all peaking at 25. In photography and film, prevalence of bleach bypass, cross processing, “Lomo effect”, and other color grading trends. Hit music in the US was heavily influenced or even imported from the UK and Europe. Notably, we saw a surge in french house/disco, big beat, electronic, trance, uk garage, and “easy listening”/adult contemporary marketed for Generation X. Less Pure Moods and more Cafe Del Mar. Pop artists were reinvented to fit, like Madonna (Ray of Light). "Soft Club" refers to club culture trickling down into mainstream culture. As the style shifts into McBling, club culture becomes so huge that only the rich can enjoy it in Ibiza. R&B + hip hop had a marked shift in production, due to producers like Soulshock and Karlin, Trackmasters, Darkchild/Rodney Jerkins, in addition to many more who formed top of the millennium sounds working with both these genres. Pop music was equally transformed by club music, R&B, and Latin pop. Rock, pop and poetry were put over trip/hip-hop & breakbeats. Songs that may not have been written for the dance floor were produced as club music. See: soft club. Get X young adults were into entrepreneurship, which supposedly fueled the 90s economic recovery, especially via tech industry. This is why they have been considered a generation which "sold out". Discussion is much deserved regarding the nature of media diversity, both genuine (largely POC in leading production roles across mediums) and as a marketing tool, and the start of gentrification as it would come to be known in post-industrial cities.

Part 1/11

First batch is Aphmau.

Starting with her Freshman skins that I've finished.

Ro'Meave Dinner: Pretty much the same save for some stockings (pantyhose) and some colour changes. Nothing too crazy like the pdh uniform overhaul.

Bake Sale: I changed up the entire maid outfit, plus made it slightly.. less provocative maybe? considering the inspiration and everything. The inspiration being the Shizuku-tan costume from My Dress Up Darling.

Prom Night: Save for the dress shape, shoe, and rose colour change, nothing much was changed.

Pajamas: Again, nothing much aside from colour changes and a sock being rolled down. Though it's attributed as a freshman skin, it's likely I'll tweak it a bit if I am able to make the pipe dream of a machinima production a reality at some point in the future.

Next, her Sophomore skins.

Casual: I took some inspiration from y2k fashion I found on google. Instead of.. Idk what she was wearing in the source material- instead of that, I gave her a tank top layered underneath a shirt, some jean shorts layered over a pair of black leggings, and some purple sneakers rather than her ratty red runners in her freshman year skins.

Pajamas: Save for her night shirt being baggier, the overlay details, and colour changes, not much was changed. Again, I might tweak this and every other skin that might need it if I'm able to do a machinima production of my reimagining.

Activewear: Nothing much changed again aside from her tanktop being changed into a shirt and some colour changed.

As for her sophomore uniform, it's functionally the same as her freshman uniform. The only thing different is her hair and shoes. Therefore it's kinda useless to show it here and list off what I've already said in this paragraph.

Next batch, Aaron.

First order of business is his senior outfits.

Overall: Aside from making his hair tinted red, I kept everything mostly the same. Sticking to the hair guide I drafted up a while back.

Uniform: The first instance I've shown where the uniform differs slightly. When I made the uniform templates, I made three main variants for both 4px and 3px skins. The one Aphmau, Travis, and Zane sport is the tidy variant, whereas the one Aaron's sporting is the sleeves-rolled up variant. Well, one of the variants with the sleeves rolled up. The variants I made at the time were the one Aaron's wearing, the tidy variant, and the "untidy" variant, which 2 of the characters currently finished wear.

Casual: Again, I didn't change much from the source material on this one, just a few colour changes.

Prom: And once again, nothing much changed. The suit I made myself, but the rose and colour choices (namely red-tinted-black) were kept the same.

Next, his freshman university skins.

Casual: Exactly the same as his senior year casual, however, I ripped his jeans, frayed the rips slightly, added a bit more weathering, fixed his shirt, and rolled his sleeves down one pixel.

Uniform: The same aside from his were wolf ears and tail.

Dreams from 20.5.24

Dream 1 I was packing to go on a trip, I think I was going with AL or my sister. In the back of my mind I knew that I had gotten a bunch of secondhand clothes that were gifted to me by someone but I had tucked them away and pretty much forgotten about them. I even asked my mum like, What do I bring and she acted annoyed like Duh, those new clothes! She even got them out and said Look! What about this top? She's holding a strapless fairy goth style top that was really pretty. It was exactly something I would love to wear on holiday to express my personality (more than usual) and would be sure to take some nice snaps of myself wearing. I knew that the female I was going with would be packing similar flirty/y2k era clothing and that our styles would match. My mum pulled other pieces that I'd been given, like a nice tan corduroy skirt. I was like, Oh I'd forgotten but yeah I guess I'll bring those.

Dream 2 I was at home and we were making snacks like pancakes or pikelets. I went to my room but at the time it was my grandma's room and she was there. I was asked her where the condiments were kept, like the maple syrup and she gestured towards the closet and stashed on the floor was what I was looking for. I even found some old pancakes that were from 'last time' in a plastic bag. They looked a little malformed and still good to eat but I would probably have to throw them out. I noticed that some of my rubbish that I usually keep in here had been thrown out. As I was looking through the closet, some pancakes appeared which had just been cooked and I ate them on the spot without any maple syrup. There was this sense of excitement like we were preparing this snack as a celebration for something.

Dream 3 I think I was at work and there were some girls who had found some fruit cheap body spray and were spraying it on themselves as if it was something amazing. I felt that it wasn't. They thought it was some highly sought after and unique product but it was just some cheap mass-produced rubbish.

Actions- I walk with confidence but still switch. Posture straight. Very little talk to strangers unless it's obvious we have common interest. Very responsible and clean!! Real fun to go out on girls night. Boys spoil me with no effort and so I'm overly friendly and get close to falling in love, but don't want attachment. Always on time. Drives very carefully. Alone most of the time. Keeps a lot of secrets. Has another personas for the strip club. Has deep conversations. Not afraid to say how I feel if someone says something I don't like. Compliments pretty girls! Loves alone time. Doesn't tell people her plans or big news or anything. Always finds new hustles but also spends a lot of money. Crazy, unusual things tend to happen.

Reputation/vibe- people know I was a huge mess and aren't sure if I still am. But see I'm doing successful at a new hustle every 2 months online. I appear a little slutty. People intimate me but feel comfortable asking me for advice or need me to help them do something I do for money. I make appearances in the MAT recovery and 304 support group from time to time. It's well known I got my shit together but still might be a lil mess.

HOBBIES/HABITS/GOALS/HUSTLE -

i remember coming across a quote that said; when you feel like everyone hates you, sleep. when you feel angry: eat, and when you hate yourself: take a shower. when when i was younger, pre depression induced by trauma, i used to take long baths in the shower, baths that would last for as long as three hours, the only time i would finally leave was when any of my elders used the bathroom. now, coming full circle it makes sense. me being an extremely insecure prepubescent kid? that didn’t feel pretty enough? that felt extremely un-hyper feminine? that kids in my school made fun of me for looking like a tomboy because i had my hair up in a bun for ballet club? yeah, pride wasn’t so big back then during the 90’s to early y2k. but i guess my bullies were right about one thing, i’m gay now — full on hardcore lesbian. guess they were manifesting it. catholic girls in private schools are the worst tho. so! in hindsight, it made sense for me, to psychologically stay in my lola’s shower for a long period of time, finishing shampoo bottles for hair straightening and whitening soaps, hoping i’d look like my mestiza classmates in the end. honestly? idek how i ended up becoming meztisa now, i used to be as tan as ayn bernos because i was a competitive swimmer. now, that i’m older tho, i have a different reason for staying in there. after all, i got everything i wanted. i got the glow up i wanted. without surgery and injections, or effort, so it’s not due to insecurity for staying in there too long — basically? it’s wanting time to stop, correction: i want the world to stop. there’s just too much ill in it, too much happening all at once. and i don’t like this generation of kids who behave like the actual snowflakes and reason like they’re arguing with their parents. i just want everything to stop, and act like these people don’t exist. the shower has become a special place that feels like you’re standing in between the crossroads of life and death, and while your in here, in this frozen energy, you realize you couldn’t care less for both. you don’t want to die, but you don’t want to exist right now — and inside the four walled tiles of the shower, nothing seems to matter. your thoughts, your feelings, facts about you, facts about other people, other people’s feelings about you, money matters and problems, the never ending corrupt cycle of politics: being in the shower is the only time you’re living in the moment, when there is actually no moment. your only goal to accomplish for now is getting the dirt and grime off yourself. and i love the attention to detail one can put into simply looking like you’re doing the bare minimum of basic hygiene. in short, a passable and decent human being… during my relapses, i’ll admit, i didn’t shower as frequently as i should have. in my relapses, it’s sleep that feels productive, but when the mania hits it’s showering, and i’d take a god awful long time in there just like when i was a kid: lathering, scrubbing, shaving, splashing and repeating the process all over my body, to the point that i feel like even my soul has been stripped clean of it’s own impurities. besides, i have no one stopping me — i have my own bathroom now. i do what i want.
