can't believe one piece of all things is the manga that gets a good live action adaptation. one piece? really? unadaptable one piece? I've seen manga set in the real, modern world with worse live action adaptations than fucking one piece? honestly at this point there's no excuse for that awful netflix adaptation of death note if THIS is what actually caring about adapting manga to live action can look like
#one piece#i don't even go here!#like I've watched a good amount of one piece#(even though it scared me when it aired on toonami)#and I'm so surprised that it actually looks *checks notes* good?#like sure luffy looks silly with his little rubber body but that's true of the manga too 🤣#honestly with this live action finally breaking the manga equivalent of the seinfeld curse#my only question is…how? are they going to adapt? hundreds of manga volumes? with humans???#because last I checked the anime has like more than a thousand episodes#and the manga is probably not ending soon#y'know this is the first time ''too much source material'' has worried me THIS much#cuz it's in typical netflix fashion a pretty short season so i don't really think they intend on adapting ALL the manga#right?#i have so many questions

Ash ( @ashanimus ) and I watched the first episode of American Gods tonight, and here are our reactions as we were watching and what we thought afterwards, put under a cut for spoilers
I dunno I think we thunked some good thoughts
commander koolaid: okay commander koolaid: the bone orchard? me: yup commander koolaid: okies commander koolaid: ready? me: Ready commander koolaid: play! me: :D me: Oooh starting off with Mr ibis! commander koolaid: Holy crap me: That was a little bit silly commander koolaid: Also holy shit me: Wheeee commander koolaid: This is a lot silly commander koolaid: Omg no one talks like this me: My goodness commander koolaid: What me: Nothing it's just funny me: Well that phonecall sounded more natural me: Probs cuz it's something Gaiman wrote as dialogue, not narration commander koolaid: The tone visually here is remarkably cartoonish xD commander koolaid: No not cartoonish commander koolaid: Graphic novel ish commander koolaid: You dig? me: Yeah me: I mean, I kinda already knew it was gonna be like this from the trailers? me: Ah I dunno, I guess it's just hard to translate mystical stuff like this to the screen without it looking goofy commander koolaid: there is, I just dont think they knew how to do it because they had conflicting visions commander koolaid: whats weird is this is making zero effort to reach a TV audiece, its obviously only speaking to the bookreaders commander koolaid: and damn does this story lose a lot so far without shadow's narration :'/ me: Mmhm me: Though, I guess I get that they don't want it to be TOO narration heavy, what with ibis already narrating the flashbacks commander koolaid: oh no Im not advocating that solution, no commander koolaid: bahahaha me: Omg that was great commander koolaid: omg commander koolaid: what perfect casting me: I love this guy commander koolaid: WASDLAKJGSKJ commander koolaid: "YOURE LOOKIG AT ME LIK I FUCKED YOUR OM" commander koolaid: WOW commander koolaid: wowwwwww commander koolaid: XDDDDD me: Super real lookin buffalo right thar commander koolaid: xD commander koolaid: this man is baeutiful commander koolaid: what is with these soundtrack choices tho me: *shrug emoji* me: Omfg me: Holy shit commander koolaid: wow me: Y he scream :V commander koolaid: so we're jumping right into this one okay me: Oh hey if you move the mouse around it tells you the names of the actors on screen me: Neat commander koolaid: like we have BARELY met shadow and youre showing us bisquis me: Jump right in commander koolaid: this is scary me: :0 me: She eated him with her vagganiaga commander koolaid: well she did that in the book XD me: I was very curious how they'd pull that one off visually me: I might be a couple seconds behind you my stream keeps stuttering commander koolaid: nooooo me: Not more then a couple seconds no worries commander koolaid: mad sweeny is way hotter than he should be me: Oh jeez I got a pic I gotta show you when this is over me: Wow what a dick me: She was deed commander koolaid: holy shit commander koolaid: they didnt do that commander koolaid: holy shit commander koolaid: thats messed up as hell jesus me: Dang Audrey me: Kinda saw that coming tho commander koolaid: im mad :c gaiman could have said no to that shit commander koolaid: hisses commander koolaid: >:C me: Y'know he might've I'm remembering an interview where Bryan fuller said Gaiman only ever have a hard no on one thing commander koolaid: ohhhhh commander koolaid: 8/ commander koolaid: I wonder what it was me: And it was specifically about how shadow reacted to one thing that Gaiman was adamant he wouldn't react to that way me: I'm wondering if the original plan was to have shadow go with it commander koolaid: That was so innesecaru tho commander koolaid: That entire exchange me: Yeah commander koolaid: It added nothing and just wasted time like commander koolaid: It's rare I see a scene so superfluous and the dialogue was just so stupidly hateful me: Oh jeez me: What about what's happening right the fuck now commander koolaid: Man. I really really don't like this director commander koolaid: I hated him in Hannibal and I don't like him here commander koolaid: He is so up is own ass commander koolaid: It's like if sack Snyder ate a college philosophy textbook me: I'm guessing that was Laura commander koolaid: That was a rocky start commander koolaid: Wanna watch another? me: Sure, when it comes out next week commander koolaid: Okies commander koolaid: What did you think? me: Okay me: What did I think me: I didn't hate it me: But it didn't blow me away me: And I think I was laughing a bit too much at parts I'm pretty sure weren't intended to be funny me: Like I'm Yell At State Park me: And All The Arrows At Once me: And Wife Suddenly Appears In Ceiling to say Goodnight me: Like there were a lot of really goofy moments me: And unnecessary shock value added me: And I'm not sold on the visual style yet, as you said it's very comic-book-y which doesn't quite match the gravitas of the source material me: But I like shadow, and I like Ricky Whittle as shadow, and I like Wednesday commander koolaid: ye that's my summation me: I'm down to see this through It hasn't really put me off too much yet commander koolaid: oh I am too! commander koolaid: I'm just very 8/at a lot of choices so far me: uhuh me: what would you have done differently? commander koolaid: I would have to think about it hmmmm >:/ commander koolaid: I would have decided ona tone tho me: ye? commander koolaid: naturalistic vs illustrative commander koolaid: I would have done the former commander koolaid: because it was the natural environment contrasted with the mystical bullshit that gave the book power me: yeah me: No yeah definitely i think that's why i'm not enjoying the style me: If the "real world" is already this crazy then what makes the god stuff stand out commander koolaid: yeah that's why I'm like commander koolaid: if everything is a reaity trip then the fantasy has no impact me: mmhm
