Kanon writing essays on songs again.
BACKSLIDE.

The Backslide Essay ( that isn’t needed but oh well )
The music video and the live performance compliment one another so well, it’s honestly a little crazy to really think about. The music video starts off with Tyler arriving at the corner store, throwing away the wet bag of buns. He then proceeds to purchase another pack, and then our story begins with Backslide.
Backslide itself, at its core, is about the backslide that many of us experience with depression. Doing good for a while, and then things start creeping up, familiar feelings that make it easy to fall back into old habits ( which is also why i think Snap Back is the response to Backslide ). You know you are trying- you are trying so damn hard to do what is asked of you/what you need to do, but you feel like you are drowning.
And here is where I’ll really start to break things down.
With the music video & the studio recording, the three times we hear the chorus, we are present with three separate emotions: the first one being fear “I don't wanna backslide to where I've started from; there's no chance I will shake this again.” Spoken softly, contemplatively. “'Cause I feel the pull, water's over my head; strength enough for one more time, reach my hand above the tide!
I'll take anything you have if you could throw me a line! I should've loved you better- do you think that now's the time you should let go? It's over my head-” Realizing that you are sliding back, that maybe this is going to be too much. That panic of realizing the spiral has already begun and you can’t stop it.
The second chorus has more of a “This is happening, I can’t stop it. You should let go for me; this struggle isn’t your fight, I don’t want to drag you down with me.” ( something I think a lot of us have to deal with when it comes to depression & friends / family / partners- not wanting them to dragged down with your spiral and not wanting to reach out for help. )
The third chorus is where everything changes between the studio & the live. “Do you think that now's the time you should let go?
It's over my head. You should let go. It's over my head.” Sounding so very tired, so defeated. With the studio version, this is the end of the song, and Tyler mutters instead of singing at the same volume he had before, "I don't wanna-", which then fades into an almost whisper, this ashamed "backslide".
The live version is where everything changes.
Having the crowd raise their hands during the chorus each time-
“I’LL TAKE ANYTHING YOU HAVE, IF YOU COULD THROW ME A LINE!” The water is over our heads and we are struggling in the rough surf to keep from drowning. Throwing a line out- metaphorically, asking if you need help; literally, because you are drowning in water and a rope could be the only thing keeping you from going under.
And the final chorus. The desperation in his voice here shifts from the defeated, ashamed tone that is used in the studio version. The wavering in his tone, the gripping of the microphone as if that is his only lifeline, pleading and begging before ( in some shows ) the guttural SCREAM of "I DON'T WANNA-" in the live shows. Full of ANGER, not even saying backslide. Not WANTING this. Wanting better. To do better. Being angry that it does happen, sometimes- even if we know it's okay, it's frustrating. “I DON’T WANNA-” don’t want to keep doing this dance over and over again, but here we are. Fight it. Fight through it.
And Tyler invokes that PERFECTLY with this switch in the concerts.

summary: Charlie confesses his feelings and reader has to decide if that's what she wants, or if another guy has her *attention*
a/n: i’m honestly BLOWN away at part 1′s feedback. y'all really loved it so Ive been working on this all day, I hope its everything youve been waiting for! thank you to my new followers, ive been writing for a bit for fun and no one was reading my stories but after the reaction for the last story I was so motivated to write. I have A LOT more ideas and even an idea for a part 3 with smut and maybe even reader having to tell the boy she didn't choose the bad news, who knooowwsss. send me in suggestions!
warnings: language, alluding to smut at the end.
mood board:
-- YOUR POV
my life has been the most fun lately. ive been hanging out with David and he really gets me to let loose. he's always trying to top his last video which is so fun to be a part of. even if we wait around the house all day. tonight im alone though. I told him I needed to get some writing down for the last song of my album. I want it to be about being happy with yourself and secure with who you are. that you don't need another person to define who you are. but im having trouble putting that into words that rhyme. maybe I should just see what David is up to.
- daveyy (:
hey, I know I said I was busy but my mind is too cluttered and im curious what the vlog squad is up to 😉 >
< hahaa nothing actually. im by myself at the house tonight. really boring. watching movies ive seen dozens of times.
oh no! your friends realize they were too cool for you? >
< probably lmao. what are you up to?
trying to finish this last song but I can't think straight >
hey would you wanna come over? its ok if you're too busy being alone watching 50 first dates lol >
< how'd you know? 😅 id love to. chipotle?
- end texts -
“hey, loser” I say as he walks in with our food and... is that ice cream? “wait, did you get ice cream?”
“yeah, I got your favorite flavor!” he says with a smile. my heart aches at the kind gesture. “wow your house is so nice” he sets the food on my counter as he glances around.
“thank you, im really into interior design... and nice houses” i joke as i examine the ice cream David got for me. he chuckles as he gets my food out of the bag and sets it up in my living room. I put on a movie to watch but we end up muting it and just talking instead. our conversations just seem to flow. “what's a memory that stands out to you from your childhood?” I ask him. “there's so many things,” he puts his arm around the back of my couch as we sit sideways to face each other. we finished eating forever ago. “probably just all of high school. I learned so much, from my friends and my teachers. nothing academically, obviously.” he laughs. I smile to him and run my fingers through my hair. he watches my movements and for a moment its quiet.
“I think you're really smart.” I say finally. “I love how you push me, you're always there for me, and you just come up with the best ideas. you're so creative.”
“wow. what did I do to deserve your kindness?” he asks with a slight laugh.
“I can think of a few things.” our conversation became much lighter after that. after a while we went into my home studio and he helped me write. the night was filled with jokes and endless laughing but also had serious moments too. I shared very personal details about my life. but the best thing of all was that there was no camera in sight. it was just friends being friends. no clickbait. no underlying purpose for the long stay. it was perfect.
-- next day
“hey y/n could I come over and talk?” Charlie asked over the phone.
“sure, I don't have anything planned till tonight.”
“ok be there in 20.”
“what's the sudden emergency?” I ask as he walks in the door.
“there's just something I've been wanting to confess for a really long time and i’m not sure-”
“its ok Charlie, what is it?”
“I think I'm in love with you.”
my heart dropped. Im frozen in time. I don't need a relationship right now and I sure as hell can't lose my friendship with Charlie.
“I don't know what to say...”
“say you love me too!” he moves closer to me “I know you do! you always want to be around me, have me close to you, we talk all night. I know you feel it.”
I look at him with a blank expression.
“I honestly don't. I've never thought of you that way, and I'm really enjoying being single. for once in my life I'm not letting the pressure of having someone on my arm get to me, I don't need this right now, I-”
“what..? y/n. don't do this.”
“I'm not doing anything it's just the truth.” I look to the ground as his eyes fill with tears. “I think you should go.” I say.
-- DAVIDS POV, that night
- y/n/n 😋
you're still coming to my party tonight right? >
< I wouldn't miss it! so proud of you! ❤️
tonight was my party to celebrate my new show. I haven't told the fans yet but this vlog will be my announcement. we start filming for it on Monday and I've never been more excited. its exactly what I've been dreaming of all my life.
the party started to kick off and all my friends slowly started showing up. Charlie was going to perform his unreleased song tonight and everyone was already talking about it.
“hey have you heard anything from y/n and Charlie? are they dating?” Ilya comes up and whispers to me.
“no man, I haven't heard anything. I was with y/n all night last night and I wasn't exactly begging her to give me details but we did talk for hours about random stuff and she never brought him up or texted anyone. I don't know they might not be.” I say with hope shining through the cracks of my voice.
“I can just ask Charlie?” Ilya offers. he's such a good friend when it matters.
I nod and then head to get something to drink. y/n still wasn't here and I was getting antsy.
just then I hear Natalie let someone in. I peak around the corner and see y/n. she looks drop dead gorgeous. i’ve never seen her dressed up like that. I think she saw right through me and asked if she had something on her face.
“no, no, I just have never seen you dressed like that. you look great.” I look to the floor. no way she and Charlie aren't an item. they both love music and they're both flawless people. they're a match made in heaven.
“well, thank you, cowboy.” she says in a funny southern accent. she was so weird. she came in for a hug and she smelled exactly like when I first met her. I put my hand on the small of her back and for a split second I felt her push more into me.
“so where can I get a drink?” she asked as we pulled apart.
“a drink?” I ask
“yes, i’ve had a bizarre day and I need a drink.”
Im about to ask her what she means when I hear Charlie from behind me
“hey, babe, you're late.” he says to y/n as he pulls her into a hug. she almost looks uncomfortable. “hey Charles, how are you?”
“i’m great, i’ve had several drinks and im thinking much clearly-er now”
“I can smell that” she chuckles
I hand her her favorite drink and ask her if she finished the song. after a short conversation Charlie pulls her to the couch where some other friends are doing karaoke. she's basically sitting on his lap and laughing. I grab my camera and record a little outside trying to not think about it.
-- YOUR POV
I honestly think drunk Charlie has forgotten about our conversation from earlier. which i’m relieved because sometimes I just need good ol Charlie and not this new one that was in love with me. sure he's a little touchy but we were always close like that.
“alright I promised David I would perform an unreleased song tonight. come on I want you to hear it.” he grabs my hand pulls me up. I have a gut feeling I don't want to be here for it.
David set up the mic outside and everyone found a seat. David sat next to me with camera in hand.
“alright alright” Charlie starts. “hopefully I don't forget the lyrics since i’m a little buzzed.” the audience laughed. “but this song means a lot to me, and I wrote it with someone in mind. someone who has changed my life for the better and made me a better man.”
oh god, please don't say my name
“y/n. you are everything to me. I wouldn't be able to be who I am today without you.”
everyone looks to me as the music starts. a love song. i place my head in my hands and David nudges me. “you ok?” he whispers.
“can you please get me out of here?” he nods his head and stands up. Charlie is looking down at his guitar lost in his music. I feel bad leaving but how could he not take no as an answer? I follow David out the door and my head is down in shame. he closes the patio door and turns to me. “what is going on? I thought you guys were dating?”
“oh god, not you too.” I groan. “just please I need to be anywhere but here right now. fast.”
“okay. let’s go.”
we go to his garage and he looks at me.
“you said fast!” he shrugs as he opens the passenger Ferrari door for me. I laugh with my head thrown back “true. but im going to need a jacket or blanket.”
“here, use mine.” he took off his hoodie and handed it to me. I hopped in the car and we were off.
“anywhere in mind?” he asks as we pull out of the neighborhood.
“nope,” I smile. “im kinda hungry though”
“alright,” he turns the car at the light. “then we’re gonna make this worth our while. I know an overly expensive place with great burgers.”
I laugh at him as my hair blows in the wind “yes! lets spend all your money!” I lift my arms and scream. David just laughs at me. we speed down the highways. ive never felt so free.
we finally arrive to the place and get seated.
“so do you wanna tell me why we left my party now?”
“i’m sorry by the way. I didn't mean to drag you from your party but...” I look down and pick at my napkin “Charlie confessed his feelings for me this afternoon.” David looked at me confused.
“isn't that a good thing?” he asked.
“not if I don't feel the same way.” I sigh and David looks surprised. “I was very clear about my feelings- or lack of. but he had been hitting on me all night and then the song. I know he was drunk but im really worried for my friendship with him.”
“I can't believe my ears.” he said almost laughing. “you, y/f/n, don't like the guy who seems like he was sent down from the heavens for you?”
“nope. he just isn't my type I guess, I don't know. I never really thought of him that way and I don't want to.”
“wow, no one will be up to your standards will they?” David laughs as he takes a drink.
“the right guy will be.”
perfect timing. the waitress comes over with our food. we thank her and get eating. he was right. best. burgers. ever!
I moan as I take another bite.
David looks me up and down with his cheeks full of burger and chuckles. “okay, y/n, calm down. it isn't no Charlie puth.”
I gasp and throw a fry at him playfully, laughing. “no... no it is not!” we both laugh harder. as we finish up David pays despite my best efforts and we head to my house so he can drop me off. the car ride was fun, we listened to all the hits and sang our hearts out. we got tons of funny looks, but nothing mattered. I grabbed his vlog camera he threw to the side and recorded him singing and then popped myself into frame and had the camera aimed at both of us. our hair was crazy and the night was wearing down on us but it didn't matter. we were just happy to be alive.
as we pulled into my driveway and David put the car in park, I looked to him. “you wanna walk me to my door?”
“already on it.”
he came around and opened the car door for me and walked me up to my door.
“thank you for tonight. it was like out of a movie. I really needed it.” I was talking softly now since it was the dead of the night and the only thing heard was the crickets.
“anytime, y/n.” David also said softly. he kept looking to my lips which made my heart beat faster every time. I know I said I didn't need a guy, but he just looks too good.
“and congrats on your show, I'm really proud of you.” I step closer.
“thank you, congrats on staying single another night.” he joked but had his hands gently placed on my forearm.
“its still early.” I whisper closer to his face now. I can feel his breath and he can feel mine. my heart is going a million beats a minute and the butterflies in my stomach are in a tornado.
“I can't write a song about you, but I can buy you more expensive burgers.”
I laugh leaning my head on his shoulder. “that's all a girl needs anyways.”
he laughs too but gently. I look up at him and his eyes are locked on mine. he places a hand on my cheek and then lower to my neck. I take a sharp breath in and connect our lips. his lips are soft, sweet, and gentle. I pull my arms up around his neck and deepen the kiss. I feel his hands slide down my back to just above my ass. I move my head to the side and open my mouth gently. he knows what to do and opens his mouth too. I feel his tongue dominate my mouth. he retracts and I close my mouth only to bite his bottom lip and then pull away. I let go and we put our foreheads together breathing heavily.
“I could do that again.” he says.
“wanna come inside?” I whisper, my hands now playing with his hairs at the end of his neck.
“best party ever.” he laughs and I pull him inside. I don't know what im supposed to tell Charlie. the heart wants what it wants?

An Interview with S.C. Atmospheric Doomers Oakskin
~By Shawn Gibson~
Continuing our series of interviews of bands in the southern sludge scene, we're now in Columbia, South Carolina visiting with unconventional three-piece OAKSKIN. As they come ever closer to finishing their debut LP, we take a look at the band's origins, inspirations, and aspirations in this one-on-one at last year's Starkfest.
Prey by Oakskin
We are at the Sparrow in North Charleston. You guys played with Mode Low and Midmourner tonight. Damn good show!
Bianca:
Midmourner they just like melt your brain because of how heavy they are!
Yeah, for sure!
Phillip: I'm digging Mode Low, too!
Bianca: Yeah, yeah.
Austin: Kinda krautrock, kinda noisey. I dig it.
Yeah, Paisley Adams the bass player just left, she is in Tripping The Mechanism.
Phillip: Tripping The Mechanism, right. I produced a couple of records of theirs.
Austin: They were supposed to play tonight, but there was something with scheduling.
Yeah, I thought the original flyer said "Tripping The Mechanism." Then it changed and said "to be determined."
Bianca: That was because they had work or something.
The other two guys in the band were here later on in the show.
Phillip: They're a great band, really cool.
The first time I interviewed you guys were at the Radio Room in Greenville, South Carolina, at Starkfest in July. I'd imagine you guys have played a few shows in the span of time since.
Bianca: Only one!
Phillip: Yeah this is our third show.
Wow, third show. Your first show was at Starkfest 2018. Now you have some shirts!
Phillip: Yeah, we're moving up!(laughs)
You got some merch!
Bianca: We've got stickers now!(laughs)
So explain your Oakskin t-shirt.
Bianca: The way our name started was because me and Phil, all three of us were on the porch mulling over what our name would be. We had no fucking idea! It was so difficult. Phil saw an oak tree in my yard and said, "Oak something." I said Oakflesh, because I am a Skyrim nerd. He said that's too brutal because our music isn't that brutal. (laughs) We're not a fucking death metal band! (laughs) Phil said Oakskin. I said, "Fuck yeah!" Later, we found out it was a spell in Dungeons and Dragons. We just winged it with the shirt design. Twenty-sided die on the shirt.
As soon as I saw it, I recognized it was a twenty-sided die.
Phillip: Who didn't play D&D at least once?
Bianca: Or at least knows about it.
Or any role playing game requiring multiple sided dice.
Bianca: D&D is the only game using twenty sided die.
Phillip: I've never seen a shirt with a die on it.
Bianca: The funny thing coming up with the shirt was like, "Let's put people under a spell. Well, why don't we incorporate the whole D&D concept?" It progressed from there.
Austin: It was the easiest decision we've had yet.
Brood by Oakskin
I believe you guys released a song recently. I got the notification from Bandcamp 'cause I'm following you guys and shared it on Facebook.
Phillip: Thank you!
Tell me about this song.
Bianca: The song is called "Brood." The name spawned from my love for cicadas, cause we're from the South. Not to say cicadas aren't from all over the world, really. In the South, in particular, you get used to hearing them. That noise that taunts you!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHH!!! (laughs)
Bianca: You know it!
Phillip: We open the song with that. That's us sitting on the porch. That song is part of a bunch of songs we are recording for an album. We are taking our time with it. We are not in a rush. We don't have a label or anything.
That's probably the best with no time limits and taking your time.
Phillip: Yeah, no deadlines, so we are going to release it when we are 100% happy.
Organic and letting it flow naturally.
Phillip: We haven't released anything since February because we had these shows. I had that song close to done, mixing it. We decided to put these songs out for these shows. Honestly, what we posted when we first played, they were kind of surprised. They weren't expecting us to be so heavy. So we were like, "Let's put a heavier song out."
Bianca: I love the surprise of us being heavy. (laughs) I do love that, but I think it gives people an idea of where we are going or what we're trying to do.
Phillip: The band has gotten heavier and darker as we've gone along.
I noticed tonight it seemed a little different. There was something like a blast beat in there -- whoa!
Bianca: We all love black metal. We all love death metal. We love different kinds of music. I think over time as we progress, we will incorporate all of our interests in all we do. We all love different kinds of music.
Austin: When we started it was in our kitchen.
Phillip: I don't know if I talked about this last time, but I wrote a keyboard line just for fun. I was thinking about a solo project. Bianca came in and asked, "Do you mind if I sing on this?" Austin came in and said, "Do you mind if I jam to this?" We were all in other bands. I was working on another project.
Bianca: I was in two bands.
Phillip: All of us were working on other projects, but we were like, "This is kind of cool!" The first song we recorded in our kitchen.
Bianca: It literally was recorded in our kitchen.
Austin: I got off work and pulled up to the house and heard the drum machine going. "Damn, someone's partying, someone's jamming! That's some cool shit!" I walked in and it got louder. It's Phillip and Bianca jamming on some stuff.
Bianca: Me and Austin have worked together before in a couple of different projects that really didn't go anywhere, but I knew I wanted to be in a band with him because I love him pretty much.
Phillip: So after that kitchen jam and recording I was like, "That was pretty cool. We'll come out with a name and release it and see if anybody is interested." People were and we are going to jump on this! Now this is her and mine main band. Austin has put 100% in! Since then, we have been writing as a band and it's just naturally gotten heavier and darker. It's just where it's gone we haven't tried to control it.
Bianca: It's darker, but light in some weird way.
Phillip: (laughs)
Bianca: Hear me out!
Phillip: Yeah, I'm going to hear you out on this!
Bianca: The lyrics, if we get them out there, they're not necessarily dark. The lyrical concepts are light and dark, but the music is so fucking heavy!
It is!
Bianca: It's like pushing the concept forward.
Austin: It all sounds like noise to me. (laughs)
Phillip: We haven't focused on a concept. We have focused on writing.
Bianca: Each song has its own entity. When we hear people's input on it, we create its own entity within the song. It makes it unified, to me. We aren't stressed out about it, where it's going. We do what we want to do.
Yellow Light by Oakskin
I think you'll have better songs and a better album when you don't have the pressure or deadlines.
Phillip: I have had to live by deadlines for years, so it's nice to be in a situation where nobody's breathing down my neck about it, you know?
Bianca: Right.
Phillip: It's nice to get it done as it gets done.
Austin: It was two days after Starkfest we had six songs tracked now. We went straight in on the first session and knocked them out -- pow, pow, pow!
Phillip: We have been practicing for months. I was like it's kind of harsh to do that to them, but I was like, "We've been practicing these songs for months, let's go record them after the show! Who knows what work schedules will get in the way? We're tight so let's go knock these out while we're tight." We went in and knocked the songs out. When we get some more, we'll knock those out.
Bianca: We have already started on some other songs, too. I love the direction y'all are going in! I come in after they finalize it, oh it's so good! I fucking love it so much! It's so weird and great. I really love it! I was like, "Can I come in now?" (laughs)
Phillip: (laughs) She was trying to sing over it and we didn't have it done yet!
Bianca: Let me sing on it! (laughs) I get really excited. We all get excited in a really weird way. Mostly we all vibe off each other.
Phillip: I think that most bands get excited about what they're doing or they wouldn't be doing it.
Bianca: Some bands don't get excited, because they get big or whatever reason.
Phillip: I understand that whole second guessing thing. I've been there: "I don't know if anyone else will like this or not?"
Bianca: I feel like bigger bands don't have the time to spend on songs anymore, because they're pushed to put something out. They don't get to enjoy it like they used to.
Austin: Well, if your doing two tours a year...
Bianca: Right.
Phillip: You're touring non-stop. It's hard to even find time to write. Try to write a little bit when you're home. That shit gets really hard! Starting a new band makes it a lot easier.
Bianca: Especially with your connections, it makes it easier for us, genuinely.
Phillip: To a certain degree. In all fairness, we are starting right at the bottom like most bands do. Nobody's been like, "Here ya go!" Play small shows...
...hit the road. Get some merch. Get some gigs.
Phillip: We're starting out like I've started every other band I've started. (laughs) I just love playing music ya know? I love playing at any level. There's certain things like yeah it would be nice to have a budget!(laughs) There are other times it is nice to start fresh and not have any expectations.
Austin: What is interesting to me about this band is Bianca. Oakskin has been together for about a year now.
Phillip: Yeah, about a year.
Austin: Before that, like she said we were rehearsing with some other projects. Until Oakskin she hadn't been in a band. Not trying to...
Bianca: ...no, it's fine. The other two bands I was in didn't play shows. It was just us trying to put music together.
Austin: So we have Bianca who is very new to it.
Bianca: This is my third show ever! Playing live, ever. (laughs)
Austin: I have been doing this fifteen years or so now. Phillip's experienced, he's been doing it for thirty years!
Phillip: I'm sorry, I shouldn't have shushed you. I wanted to see where he was going with this. (laughs)
Austin: Well, for me seeing where you [Bianca] have come from and seeing where you [Phillip] have come from. You [Bianca] are still enthusiastic. Phillip and I get down and shit (laughs), because we are grumpy and run down. You [Bianca] are like, "No, we can do this!"
Phillip: That is true.
Bianca: (laughs)
Phillip: I think one of the funny things is yeah, she is starting fresh and I'm kind of old and grizzled. It's like I see everything ahead of me that's going to go wrong. This is going to wrong! This is going to go wrong! This is going to go wrong!
(laughs)
Bianca: I have bright eyes about everything. Everything is great, ya know? (laughs)
Phillip: It's been fun, I will say that.
Bianca: I love doing music with y'all, for real!
Phillip: It's being done for the right reasons. It's really nice.
Down the road, you guys will release a full-length proper, right?
Phillip: We were going to do an EP and then we were like, "Let's just keep going and make an album."
Bianca: We have at least three more songs to write and we'll have an album.
Nice. Can't wait!
Bianca: It will come out whenever we feel like it!(laughs)
Austin: It will be four gatefold 12" LP's!
It's going to be a double live album! (laughs)
Bianca: (laughs)
Phillip: In reality, it will be a Bandcamp download! (laughs)
It was good catching up with you guys and seeing you live again.
Bianca: Thank you for coming to see us. Genuinely, thank you!
Is there anything that you guys would like to plug or push?
Well it depends on when this comes out!
Bianca: (laughs)
Right on! Fair enough! I still need to put the Starkfest interview out there. Guilty as charged!
Phillip: That was not a dig.
It's fine. I really want to get that one out there.
Austin: We have a show in Atlanta in two days.
Bianca: Yeah we are playing SlaughterQUE.
Hell, yeah. I saw the post for that on Facebook. It's two days right?
Bianca: If you would have liked, commented, and shared you could have won two free tickets!
What? Goddamnit!
Bianca: Only fifteen people did that.
I think I shared it. I saw it.
Phillip: You forgot to like it. (laughs)
Bianca: We had very strict rules about it.
Yeah I was smoking in the boys room when you were talking about the rules! I'll share it, but I'm not going to "like" it. I like those guys and everything! (laughs)
Bianca: (laughs)
Phillip: We have a couple shows coming up.
Austin: Next month.
Bianca: Our video was adorable, because we had a lot of cats. Our cats are very cute, too!
Phillip: If anything it was a statement: "We don't give a fuck!" (laughs)
Bianca: And also we love cats.
Phillip: Love cats, yeah.
Bianca: We love Halloween and cats.
Phillip: That is a true statement. Our house has a ridiculous amount of cats right now.
Oh no!
Bianca: We don't have like thirty or anything. We have four.
If you get over fifteen cats, you have to get the crazy cat lady action figure. (laughs) I'm not sure, I will check the handbook.
Phillip: One of our cats got stuck in a tree.
Bianca: To be fair, this cat's name is Siren. He never shuts up. He is constantly meowing.
Phillip: So Siren gets stuck in a tree. We couldn't find him.
Bianca: The way we found him was because he is so loud, the neighbors behind us heard him.
Phillip: Here's the funny story. The tree the cat got stuck in was at a cat person's house. They had over thirty cats!
Austin: They were rescue cats.
Phillip: Lucky for that cat he was way up there.
Bianca: 25 feet up in the tree!
Phillip: We were calling people to get him out and none of us could afford that.
Bianca: That guy had a tree climbing friend.
Wow!
Bianca: That cat is so lucky! We're so broke. You have to pay the fire department two hundred and fifty dollars to get a cat out of a tree.
Jesus Christ!
Phillip: I had no idea our neighbor had that many cats!
Bianca: That cat does not want to go outside anymore! So anyways we love cats. (laughs)
Well, that will make a great shirt, some Oakskin stickers maybe. Huh?
Phillip: The next shirt will be a cat stuck in an oak tree.
Austin: That's wilder than a cat going up a tree.
Bianca: Austin knows all these southern sayings. Phillip and I are from the south and we don't know what he's saying.
Austin: No one has ever heard all the sayings I know.
I am from the south, as well. I had a book of old southern laws and some of it was ridiculous, some very bizarre. Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate it!
Phillip: Thank you so much!

EXCLUSIVE: Joshua Powell Talks Indianapolis, Stoner Jams & David Lynch
Written by Luke Jaggers
Over the past month we here at Sight & Sound have been obsessed with a singer/songwriter by the name of Joshua Powell. He sent us over his 2019 release entitled Psycho/Tropic and we’ve been enamored with it. We wanted to reach out and get an exclusive look into his life with the band and what he’s looking to accomplish in 2019. We hope you enjoy this interview and his album as much as we did.
In Jaye’s video about your album, you were compared to artists such as Bon Iver, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens. I personally hear some From Indian Lakes as well, but my questions are what do you think of those comparisons and also what influences you?
Joshua: I'm cool with those comparisons, especially with Vernon and Stevens because those two have indelibly influenced me. The fact that both of their careers are rooted in lyric-heavy folk tropes that were compounded upon and extrapolated across their discographies. I've followed a similar trajectory and am no stranger to their work. I've only heard a half dozen tunes from the other two artists you mentioned. I don't love 'em, but I like 'em as a friend. My art intake is real heavy and broad, so each record sort sort of has its own council of influences. The ones that have made the longest and deepest marks are Bon Iver, Kanye West, Neil Young, and David Lynch.
That’s interesting that you note David Lynch as an influence. Specifically because a lot of bands don’t look towards other mediums of art to influence their music. Especially after listening to your album I can definitely hear those influences to other pop culture. Is that something you think about deliberately when making your music?
J: Absolutely. I was drifting toward disenfranchisement with music as a medium because of its inherently bifurcated medium of consumption. With music, you make recordings, or you perform live. I was spending a lot of time with other non-musical artists who, it seemed to me, had a much more inspiring, cosmic, holistic view of art. My friend Emily talked to me over a diner breakfast about the body of a dead bat she found for like half an hour. I was enraptured. Turns out it was too small to taxidermy, but the ARTIST (vs the musician I s'pose) sees art everywhere. That's much more sustainable an MO if you ask me. So yes, I'm looking at a lot of cinematic surrealism and horror, reading a lot of classics and philosophy, going to galleries--the creative principles are super transitive if you have an open spiritual ear I think.
With a project that’s so expansive as Psycho/Tropic the production really shines all over the album. Who recorded your album and what was the recording process like for you?
J: Thanks! I think so too! Jonathan Class produced, as he always has for me with only a few exceptions. We worked at Varsity Recording Co. in Anderson, IN, where both of our music careers germinated. I worked with my brothers Jacob (drums) and Adam (guitar), my bandmates with the longest tenure. Their fingerprints are all over the arrangements. Working with Jon is always a total dream because he interprets my visions really accurately. And he becomes the extra band member in the studio. We're also all total goobers and hanging out was effortless. We took our time with it more than we ever have, and that extra care I think really translated into the end product.
Speaking of Indiana, seems like right now we’re seeing a lot of talent get picked up from here and getting noticed. Do you think Indiana is a good place for musicians to create?
J: *laughs* I know, right?! We're coming out of the woodwork! Someone from Wisconsin said the same thing to me the other day! The short answer is hell yes. I believe the Midwest is having it's meta-modern renaissance, and Indy's jockeying to be its palpitating heart, man. If you have an idea, you can make it here. Every month the culture gets weirder, richer, more diverse, more hospitable. The other day I was talking to my poet friend about the Midwest - He was so excited about what was happening in the DIY music scene here, and in the indie booksellers, the small print press and he talked about the vibration that these full rooms have been emanating--this idea that "Something good is about to happen here." And I think that's the spirit of the Midwest. We work hard and we keep hope. We know what we look like sometimes, when our potholes and grey days are held up against the shining LA lights and the happenin' ATX thrall, but we believe in our own capacity, and we trust that what's happening here is real, and big, and good. Every time I think I have a handle on the local scene here, another door opens and I realize just how much is being MADE here, by all sorts of folks. It's the most inspiring place in the world to someone with the right mix of creative pension, inner light, and grit. Shit, I'm getting evangelical over here.
What would you say to someone that's never heard your music before and they're about to listen to it for the first time?
J: If it's an older person, I say, "imagine Neil Young songs played by Pink Floyd." If it's a younger person I say, "It's stoner jams for English majors." I think one of the selling points of our band is that you can listen to it with whatever level of intentionality you bring to the table. I'm told it works as background study music. Some of our heaviest songs lyrically are built to be summery sounding anthems or uptempo rock toe-tappers. But it's also built for repeated listens, in headphones or studio monitors, lying in bed with your eyes closed, or with the lyrics in your hand and a highlighter for annotating. There are layers built into everything, from the connotative references in the lyrics to the way the production elements are panned. It's super deep if you want it to be. But it's also just rock 'n roll.
What do you hope to accomplish in the near future with your album already releasing earlier in the year? Tours planned?
J: Recently, thanks to the help of people like yourself, we're doing the most extensive press campaign we've ever done. Trying to cull fans from the internet because I'm told that's the happenin' place to be these days. But we also, just this week, acquired a new tour van by the fiscal grace of our darling fans who raised over 6k for us on GoFundMe. So starting in April, we're back to hitting the non-digital streets. We have tours planned so far this year with The Outside Voices, Sylmar, and Mister Moon, as well as a busy summer festival schedule, and more plans looming in the lessening shadows of the autumn. We want to bring the new record to as many physical people as we can afford this year, before we start the whole cycle over again. Shaping up to be a busy and beautiful year, and we're excited to keep building on this framework. We also just booked our first national television appearance on PBS that we're shooting in March that will be syndicated everywhere, along with some other great bands like Mike Mains and The Way Down Wanderers, so keep an eye out for that!
I just wanna say personally that your music was such a surprise and we’re so excited to share it with the Sight & Sound audience. Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing this absolutely incredible album with us!
J: Dude! Thank you so much! So pleased y'all connected with it, truly. Thanks for being down to help us spread the word, it makes all the difference.
Psycho/Tropic by Joshua Powell is available on all streaming platforms now.

10 Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Albums of 2019
While all types of music share the beautiful ability to bridge the gaps between people, let's not fool ourselves and act like the music industry works the same across the board.
For instance, while most of the bands and pop stars who made waves in 2018 will now venture out on exhaustive tours, go on hiatus, or do anything for two or three years except consider putting out another album, many of the same names in hip-hop and R&B who commanded headlines, turned heads, and dropped dope records, collabs, and singles last year will be back in 2019. And as long as everyone is on their meds (seriously, take care of yourselves), we're 100% down with that.
In 2019, greats will get a chance to re-establish their greatness, underground talents will attempt to conquer the mainstream, and unique artists will continue to push hip-hop in new and thrilling places. Call it a repeat. Call it a rerun if you want, but it's the best show on in 2019, and we ain't flippin' the channel.

Cardi B – TBD
Cardi B in “Money” music video
Why We're Excited: If Kendrick Lamar quietly proved in 2018 that he's still the king, Cardi B struck a royal balance by ascending to her queenly throne with as much pomp and fanfare as possible. Cardi took over Coachella, stole the show on SNL with her classy baby bump reveal, sent an album's worth of singles straight up the charts, and finally answered Austin Powers' longstanding question: “Really, who throws a shoe?” Let's face it: since “Bodak Yellow” hit the charts in mid-2017, Cardi B has run the rap game like cardio. Now, fresh off the presses (or day-old at worst), Cardi B has announced that her Invasion of Privacy follow-up will creep into fans' hands in 2019. While most new mothers and reigning hip-hop royalty might consider stepping out of the spotlight for a time, Cardi has proven she's got the swagger, flow, and “okuuuuuurts” to not wear out her welcome anytime soon. –Matt Melis

Childish Gambino – TBD
Childish Gambino, photo by Ben Kaye
Why We're Excited: Now that he's no longer making the Kessel Run alongside Han Solo, or nursing a broken foot, Donald Glover should have little to no distractions when it comes to music for 2019. Of course, we say that as if he didn't deliver one of the best songs last year in “This is America”, even while juggling the aforementioned projects, so can you imagine what he'll do with even more time? Something substantial, no doubt, and the stars are beginning to align. Already, Glover's booked to headline Coachella, which has become the de facto billboard to promote a new album, and he even has appropriate material for the time of year with “Feels Like Summer” and “Summertime Magic”. Couple all of this with his forthcoming appearance in Jon Favreau's The Lion King and we're looking at a Summer of Gambino. Hopefully, it's not his last. –Michael Roffman

EarthGang – Mirrorland
EarthGang
Why We're Excited: “Don't believe the hype” might be one of hip-hop's Ten Commandments, but sometimes we just can't help ourselves. Everything about EARTHGANG - the oddball hip-hop duo from Atlanta featuring Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot - suggests that they've got plenty to back up any buzz they're getting. Hell, it's why we made them our Artist of the Month last February. In 2018, not only did the pair brilliantly cap off their Rags, Robots, and Royalty EP trilogy, but they also dropped the first single from the upcoming Mirrorland, a freaky slow jam called “Stuck” that teases how these wonderful weirdos might just manage to squeeze into our solar system in 2019. –Matt Melis

Run the Jewels – RTJ4
Run the Jewels, photo by Philip Cosores
Why We're Excited: One of the only positives of last year's Venom - other than seeing Tom Hardy trump a garbage movie - was hearing new music by Run the Jewels. After all, it's been two years since the surprise Christmas release of RTJ3, and so much has changed in the interim, which makes their forthcoming sequel all the more exciting. “I've been collecting beats and we're just going to kind of try and make the grimiest, rawest record we possibly can,” El-P told Beats 1 in October. Though, as Killer Mike countered, “We always really were just about making nasty rap records, man,” contending, “We never were the type of people who were looking to make records that were addressing specific political situations. If it happens, it happens, and it does on occasion, but we're not Public Enemy. What we're trying to do is be two guys in a friendship from different places having the time of their lives and making something that everybody can make the scrunchy face to when they hear.” Hey, that works, too. –Michael Roffman

ScHoolboy Q – TBD
Schoolboy Q // Photo by Philip Cosores
Why We're Excited: Everyone needs time to grieve, even Schoolboy Q. If you recall, the Compton rapper had intended to release the follow-up to 2016's Blank Face LP by the end of 2018. However, those plans changed when he announced to his fans at Chicago's House of Vans back in September that he would delay the album following the tragic death of his friend and collaborator, Mac Miller. “I'ma go back, and I'ma figure out when I'ma put this fucking album out, because y'all are going to get this album,” he insisted. “I promise that. I'm just not ready to walk into the radio station and the first thing they ask me is 'So Mac Miller…' I'm not ready to deal with those questions. I'm not ready to put nothing out right now. I'm sorry.” Considering the album was reportedly “90%-95%” completed back in August, it really comes down to when he's ready to let it go. –Michael Roffman

SABA, Noname, and Smino – TBD
SABA, Noname, and Smino, photo by SABA
Why We're Excited: The only intelligent response is, why wouldn't we be excited? For our money, Chicago emcees SABA and Noname dropped two of the best hip-hop albums of 2018, Care for Me and Room 25, respectively, and Smino wasn't far behind them with eclectic singles “L.M.F.” and “KLINK” off his accomplished second full-length. Now, mix SABA's storytelling with Noname's jazzy flow and Smino's wildcard flavor, and you have a trio that have the chance to change what the future of hip-hop sounds like. If that doesn't excite you, nothing will. –Matt Melis

Solange – TBD
Solange, photo by Philip Cosores
Why We're Excited: Sibling rivalries don't make much sense as you get older, especially when you count Queen Bey herself as Big Sis. But if there is one kid sister out there who could hold her own in the type of world where music critics just can't help comparing siblings, it would be Solange. Her 2016 album, A Seat at the Table, earned her just that, especially the utterly gorgeous and relatable single “Cranes in the Sky”. Solange made her believers wait eight years for that full-length. And, quite frankly, after a record as unique and promising as A Seat at the Table, we couldn't wait that long again. Luckily, we don't have to. –Matt Melis

SZA – TBD
SZA, photo by Natalie Somekh
Why We're Excited: By the time Spring hits, SZA may have both a Golden Globe and an Oscar sitting on her shelf, that is if either the Hollywood Foreign Press or the Academy deem “All the Stars” worthy for Best Original Song. (They have competition.) Still, that shouldn't stop her from maintaining her day job afloat, and while there's been no official announcement, the singer has been teasing her highly anticipated followup to 2017's CTRL. In September, she responded to one disbelieving fan by tweeting, “…A's already done,” casually confirming a possible title. In October, she spoke at length to New York's 105.1's Powerhouse, saying: “I want it to be 100 percent honest to whoever I am in this moment because that is the only way it will work. But I just personally think now it's just about getting to the root of who I am. But faster, clearer, more concisely. Like just learning the understanding of self.” And, just last month, she teased clips in a since-deleted Instagram post. Simply put, something's coming. –Michael Roffman

The Weeknd – Chapter 6
The Weeknd, photo by Natalie Somekh
Why We're Excited: Last year was a slow season for Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd. After popping up on Black Panther: The Album in February and dropping his My Dear Melancholy EP in March - both of which warranted him two Platinum-certified, Billboard-charting singles in “Pray for Me” with Kendrick Lamar; and “Call Out My Name” - the award-winning crooner kept things relatively low key with minimal buzz. In November, however, Tesfaye told his fans at a Toronto gig, “I haven't been this inspired in years and I want you guys to be the first to know I'm working on my new album right now.” So far, we know very little with regards to features and its sound, but we do know that it's titled Chapter 6 and that it won't be another EP. As he later teased on Twitter, “some chapters are smaller than others. not this next one though…” Ooh, cryptic! –Michael Roffman

Kanye West – Yandhi
Kanye West, photo by Joshua Mellin
Why We're Excited: It's hard to believe that in a year when Kanye West produced five albums - two of which he starred on and all but one he appeared on - in just under a month that our focus would be on everything but his music. But Kanye tweeting at odd hours and wandering, sadly and quite literally, in front of television cameras speaking incoherently like a person off his meds stole the show. He's since done some public relations tidying up, and we can only hope that the artist capable of helming an album like DAYTONA and delivering a song like “Ghost Town” will leave the little, red hat and superhero cape at home and go back to being an undeniable “genius” in the recording studio. –Matt Melis

HONORING MY LATE HUSBAND NICKOLAI COWELL, Screamin' Olaff Maginski, NEW SONG ROAD SCORE ONIONS I am baaaack. I am having an INTENSE physical transformation. In my 10 Years of horrific illness, I had thousands of tumors/graulomas, and many many badly broken and dissinetegated bones. I had numerous surgeries, including 2 prostetic hips, other human bones, screws, and countless stiches in my throat where they kept on having to save my life with IVs sewed into my neck, for my blood was teribly infected, I had DVT blood clots, and my veins had collapsed. I know it is BEYOND a miracle I am here, typing this, smiling, breathing. I am trying to find that balance that I always struggle with between helping make the world a better place and caring for myself. The past few days, as it was most of the last 10 years, I lost hearing in my left ear and every noise that came to me was garbled into torturous pain in my left ear and eye where so many tumors recently melted, leaving holes so to speak. Since I coud not use music at all, I deeply mediated on the places and people I love so dearly and healed healed healed, am healing healing healing. I am almost COMPLETELY off narcotics, just had to add a bit back with he recent intense pain. I realize I am not yet strong enogh to travel on a plane, so I will not make it to the Portland Memorals May 6 and Music May 7 for my dear late husband, 'Nickolai' Nicholas Cowell, Screamin' Olaf Mcginski. My songs will be there, a dozen of them, on recycled paper, as will my spirit, and I will be there on some form of social media. Every single person that was attracted to the wonderous light of my husbad is an exceptional person, I assure you will not be let down if you attend and meet some of his glorious 'extended family'. This is a small event for friends and family organized by his parents and brother. He never had a friend he didn't consider family, so in that vein: all are very welcome, kids too of course! I will post information soon about the event(s), timing and more details. I am working with my dear sisier on a Funeral close to home, in Massachusets perhaps. My nephew and I will be playing songs, and we are planning some beautiful rituals. I will be honoring this brillinat man for the rest of my life, so after Portland will be a Mass/NJ event, one in Telluride, CO, and on from there Interntionally eventually. This hubmle brilliant unseen man in his lifetime deserves the world, and I internd to give it to him now that I am alive again, taking care to first feed and love and heal myself, which I am deepy working on now. He is truly helping me write the Album, Band of Peace, letting all beings know they are dearly loved, powefrul, and thet unity and peace and susainability are all possible! There will be a non-proft fund in his name associated with this evetually. I have been offline, completely had my phone shut off, and have been in a deep cuccoon. I will check messages and emails etc. soon. I was able to listen to music again starting yesterday!!!!!!!! YEAH! I will be working with many many msicinas! SO EXCITED! Today, I wrote the song Road Score Onions about meeting and inevitably falling deepy in love wih my late husband, Screamin' Olaf Mcginski. The greif is deep, for he is my True Love. The music helps immensely, and I am trying to remind myself not to be so sad, for he is here with me!!! Cheers and peace, y'all! No matter what is going on in your world around you, peace is possible-for is inside you!!! I will be recording music videos of Whanganui River and Road Score Onions soon, as my ear pain allows me to, gives me the green light!!@@ ROAD SCORE ONIONS ************************************** Darlin', you brought me road score onions and I was all in. The number of times we saved eachothers lives. Forged in fire. You satisfy my every desire. Spiritually we are steemed from trees. Fom Luxor, Nepal, Tibet. Peru. We are never through. We come from Water. Earth. Air. Dust. Don't despair. All that is true and holy and sacred will soon rise. Stop the illusions and our people's confusion. Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. In the Great Spirit I put all my trust. You must know you will never leave my heart. Your essence from me cannot part. Our trip to Nicaragua. Sabana Grade Village. Our Holy Pillage. Staying with our humble loving beautiful family on their earthen floor, teaching eachother about sustainability. Singing dancing so very free! We learned how to make solar panels. Change the channels. Flooding all lies. Bridge the divide. House sitting in straw bale heaven adobe. Riding horses from the mountian peaks to the sea. Dancing underneath the glorious full moon. For you, I do forever swoon. My big spoon. Look at the moon. Planting gardens composting making the most of what we were given. You were always forgiven. Livin' I am again. Your humble brilliant hands they do heal this sacred land. Oh, how your glance and dance does put me into a trance. Come into my arms. Away from all harm. Sway with me to the rhythum of the soft afternoon. Watch the new blooms. Please, deliver me from evil!. All the countries you worked for peace in. To my deep chagrin too brillant you were for the darkness here you are now devoid of fears darling, you are so damn pure!! I can feel you, ever-presently near. Oh, how my days are filled with rain and my nights are filled with sorrow. The thought of loving you brings me rainbows of tomorrow. The kind bones in your face defy space. Your soothing voice is so very gentle. So choice. Your brilliant mind so divine. Your gigantic heart melted me right from the start. Your addictions and earthly afflictions haunt me. I try to remember that now you are finally at peace. You are my peaceful warrior. How you do deliver me from pain. You are a white buffalo in my dreams: dancin' prancin' singing a dancin' and and a bell ringing. You light my fire deep within, my love twin. Sing to me as we sway to the wind in the trees lighting beings. Erupting into a violet orange sky, no longer shy. His white orange violet indigo blue silver gold halo showed me past lifetimes with this precius soul. I right then did know. I would never go. When I was down, you would bring me kittens donkeys and love poems. How I know them all by heart. You are my man. We are taking a stand with this album you are helping me write. People, Unite!!! You took my hand all over this glorious land. Man oh man. When I was long captured underwater and could not talk or sing, I would bring my visions to the pure of heart above. Owlie was sent to Nahko to sing to you this love song, 'She breaks free a flower. Catches the wave of the wind. She plants it South, far below the canyon walls. We are the mighty rivers, emptying at the mouth and joining currents. Currently, I am waiting for the midnight hour when the moon undresses in all her glory. You are my shell. My ocean as well. Put your mouth to my mouth, breathe along. You are my shell my ocean as well. Put your mouth to my mouth breathe along', he croons. How every single night was freight with the deepest strife. I could not even be touched or held. How tears welled and felled. Of course you had to check out!!@@ I do shout! Your addictions and our afflictions were to much to bear. Bear. Bere. Bare. But for our deep deep undying love, and uconditional love from the one above. I swear, I am being miraculously healed. All was reveled. It happened so damn fast. You did not believe your eyes. You tried and tried while I cried and cried for you to wake up. I had to leave to set you free like you had so often delivered to me. After all is said and done, You returned to me! See!! These songs you are writing with me! Glory!! I open my mouth south to your breath. Dissolving the tumors in my brain, my breasts. Your violet eyes Singing and dancing together on the hightest peaks. In your arms I find the deepest releif. The light in your soul. How it roll roll rolls. Over and over with you down the valleys, we met at the mouth of the river where we are finally delivered back into eachothers' arms. I finally received your ashes. I have been planting them all over. Rebirth Rebirth Rebirth. I will show you your worth that you couldn't see in this particular form on Earth. Oh perfect storm! I will always remember your water. We shall recover. All that was lost. lost. Roots run deep. True love doth forever seep. Oh, in my heart how you bring me road score onions every day to keep me sane. I will always honor your true name, my darlin'! Galloping on horses to the sparkling waters in Dominica. You are a fantastic humble leader. Watching all you do the classes you hold. You are so very bold. A sight to behold. You have zero ego, ergo my heart sings for your ring. Your humble brilliance was definately heaven sent. My love for you does rise rise rise. I will always be your bride. We will not be denied. My Darlin', My Serapin. My Dolphin. My Holy Love Twin Deep Within. Oh. How you bring me road score onions every day. It is a miracle I am healing at all. I can feel you holding me carressing me right underneath me singing to me writing these songs with me. How your mighty heart cures my disease. Please. Pleease. Don't leave me. I deeply believe. In you. My boo. I will soon be honoring you across the world 'From the west coast to the east coast blazing a trail of gold', as our wedding song Katharina wrote us our story is Told. Oh, at first glance, you took a deep stance in my heart. Your exceptional kindness, brilliance, humbleness, compassion, deep beauty had me from day 1. You Sacred Sun. We had to meet to consolodate our grants under the same ubmbrella nonprofit Atals Arkology. Steeprock Jointery. Led by the late, the great, the brilliant, the dear my brother from another mother: Glen Harcourt. Dear Brother, I know you are with my lover in Heaven. Creating glorious breathable buildings that sing! Structures that venerate and create love. They self illuminate, never to take. My grant was for green bulding code changes and education series. His was for Biodiesel for town busses and trucks. What Divine luck. That smile. I could see for miles. Your kindness. Your gentle kiss, that sweet abyss. Many many laughs. I crocheted your favorite hat. After our first weekend together, you left me the most heavenly letter. On the back of a macaroni package. That said 'You are like a perfect red apple on top of a tall twisted tree in a desolate land.' Not long after, you asked for my hand. Photon belt. Starseed Gateway. Gravity. Weightless. Unity. Blue Cosmic Hands Across this Sacred Land. Time to take a Stand. A Stand. On our first date after our grants were given to my house in Telluride you had driven. From your Biodisel Warehouse in Montrose. Our date to the potluck at our friends yurt that glorius fall night by the fire. Your face removed all my hurt, You beamed through centuries in my deepest dreams. I knew that road score onions had been planted so deep in my heat. Right from the start. Oh, darling. I 'aint leaving you again. You breathe life into me eveytime I remember you showing up with your road score onions in my heart. They took deep root right from the start. -Elizabeth Robbins April 29, 2017

A ‘Wild A** F***** Year’ Of Grief Pumped The Breaks On SZA’s New Music - Her 'Rolling Stone' Cover Saga
SZA explains why she hasn’t made any new music lately. And the culprit was grief. Find out what kept the singer from releasing new bops and more from her Rolling Stone cover story inside…
View this post on Instagram
I’m a shy guy . Tryna tellit best I can THANK YOU @rollingstone for this honor . interview by @emmacargo out now .
A post shared by SZA (@sza) on Feb 26, 2020 at 12:10pm PST
2019 was a rough year SZA.
In 2017, the singer released her debut album CTRL and fans haven’t received an album since. After inking her deal with Top Dawg Entertainment, she scooped up nine Grammy nominations, she hit the stage on Coachella’s main stage with her labelmate Kendrick Lamar and wrote tracks for superstars like Beyoncé. In 2018, her collaboration “All the Stars” for the Black Panther soundtrack blew up and fans just knew a new album was in the works.
But, life hit.
First, her close friend and collaborator Mac Miller died from an accidental overdose in the fall of 2018. In June 2019, SZA’s grandmother, Norma, died in hospice care. “My grandma was like my best friend,” she says. “It was the longest five months of my life.”
In May, when Norma was really struggling, SZA performed on Saturday Night Live with DJ Khaled, which made her feel immense guilt. The following month, her grandmother passed away. Five months later (in November), SZA’s auntie died unexpectantly.
“I didn’t want to make music,” she tells Rolling Stone in her cover story for her single cover. “I didn’t. I was just trying to not kill myself, and not quit, period. Because it was really f*cking hard, and lonely as fuck.”
Before her solo cover dropped, SZA was joined by Megan Thee Stallion and Normani for Rolling Stone's Women Shaping The Future cover.
“I’ve buried so many people in my life, you would think that I would be used to it, or just have a threshold. But my grandma broke the threshold for me. It was so weird to not have any . . .” — her voice breaks — “I don’t know, any control over anything.”
To begin healing through what she calls “my own journey out of this dark-ass depression,” SZA leaned into exercise and wellness for therapy. She committed herself to going to the gym every day and practicing Pilates; she got into crystals and meditation and sound bowls. She says all of these things, bit by bit, started to help.
“You really have to choose to feel better. You have to. Have to,” she says through tears, pounding her floor for emphasis. “Because if you don’t, you just die. I decided I’m going to choose that sh*t for my f*cking self, for real. I feel like I’m only trying to make music that I care about, and I’m trying to work with people that will f*ck with me for real. That’s it. I’m just trying to do everything that is meaningful, and do sh*t that’s passionate, and remind myself that I’m worth something and talented and a nice girl. Just basic sh*t.” She pauses and collects herself. “So that’s what the f*ck I’ve been doing.”
Now that she's gotten herself together and healed, she's ready to release new music. And her new bops will seemingly hit different for her fans.
“Music is coming out this year for sure,” she says. “An album? Strong words.” The much-reported rumor that she was planning on releasing a trilogy of albums and then retiring, she says, is nonsense. “I can always make music. It’s who I am,” she says. “So if I started making f*cking sculptures and decide to take up entomology, I’m still probably going to drop something. I am also getting to know myself. Because if I keep trying to regurgitate the same girl, y’all are going to hate that sh*t. And I don’t want that either.”
The "Love Galore" singer has been drawing inspiration from jazz (Miles Davis, John Coltrane) and a truly eclectic playlist she made “from my childhood,” which jumps around from the Beach Boys to Ella Fitzgerald to Australian neo-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote.
“I don’t even give a f*ck about cohesion,” she adds. “If you sound like you, your shit’s going to be cohesive. Period.”
The 29-year-old entertainer has been in Hawaii cooking up a new sound:
"Every day became its own nucleus of ideas and experimentations, which led to making some shit I haven’t heard before. Usually when I hear something that I haven’t heard before, I hear it from somebody else. It’s exciting when I’m hearing shit I haven’t heard before, and it’s coming from me.”
So, get ready. SZA is about to drop a new LP that'll hopefully satisfy fans who have been craving new music from the star.
In a recorded interview, SZA opened up about some "firsts" in her life:

Also, SZA joined forces with Justin Timberlake to release the track and music video for “The Other Side,” co-written by SZA along with Justin Timberlake, Ludwig Göransson, Max Martin, and Sarah Aarons. It's produced by Timberlake and Göransson. “The Other Side” is the first single to be released from the upcoming "Trolls World Tour," which will be available on March 13th via RCA Records and is available for pre-order.

level 1 TracyJackson 3 points · 5 hours ago I've got the impression that, while Rips was more in the power pop/punk rock vein, It's Real draws from more influences pre-punk: classic rock, even some psychedelia. What's your stance on the often perceived antagonism between these genres? How do they / don't they connect? And while we're at it, I always love hearing about musician's favorite records, so what are some of your all-time faves in these genres - and if there's something close to your heart that doesn't fit within these categories, also beyond?
Anyway, thanks for one of the few current takes on rock'n'roll I truly enjoy!
Reply Share Report Save
level 2 EXHEXBAND Ex Hex 4 points · 4 hours ago Wow that's a tough one! well, we really do pull inspiration and influence from all of the above mentioned genres. The antagonism between them is not really something we pay attention to-we just are drawn to sounds we like. I love how these subcategories inform each other and continue to morph and merge and split through different artists. I guess thats pretty psychedelic! -LH

level 1 jtouhill 5 points · 4 hours ago For Mary: I lived in Providence, RI, during the mid- to late-‘90s, and I saw Helium several times at venues like Lupo’s and the Met Cafe. Were there any Providence bands from that time period that you particularly enjoyed (e.g., Small Factory, Scarce, Velvet Crush, Thee Hydrogen Terrors, Lightning Bolt, or others)? Also, I know you played with the Dambuilders and the Flying Nuns quite a bit back then (both great bands), but were there any other mid- to late-90s bands from Boston that you thought were great, but might’ve been less well-known? Thanks!

P.S. Love y'all oodles and the trapper keeper that came with the album pack is dreamy.

level 1 AnDeluzion 1 point · 3 hours ago Help settle a debate please: Does listening to music, as an adult, that you liked growing up inherently nostalgia? In my opinion, there's a fine line between liking something because it reminds you have a prior time/place, vs your tastes just having not changed at all over the years.
