malachi supposed it was the alcohol, and him arriving to the ball alone that made him slightly aching to be clingy. when there wasn’t a shadow for him to be in, he found it hard to exist. if his eyes weren’t low and the world wasn’t moving in slow motion he couldn’t quite place where he should put his hands, or position his feet. or how he should answer a question or laugh or sip his drink. 

he couldn’t help it, needing someone to take cover underneath. one whiff if seonhwa’s perfume had him in a bee-line towards her direction, a pout on his pretty lips. he whined tugging lightly on her dress, “where have you been i’ve been looking for you all night. and don’t tell me you were with hyung because i’m just going to keep whining about it.”

when he'd got the call, it seemed like it all went too fast. the officer was stern, gave him clear instructions on how he had to come identify her, that they'd preferred in person etc. as if it was a business transaction. and he just nodded, gave short and masculine answers as he tried to process what he was hearing. he wasn't surprised, this didn't come out of left field, but he didn't know how to feel. it was relief, but it was also remorse, like he'd missed the perfect opportunity to do something and now he'd never get the chance.

han had told him he could use the key whenever he wanted, but it was three in the morning, the rain was pelting the windshield of the car and he hardly doubted they wanted some soaking wet person just opening their door. so when he pulled up to their shared home he just stood their a moment. he hadn't noticed his hands were trembling, that explained the random jerks he had to pull to stay on the road, and the reason why it took every ounce of strength to press their doorbell and heavily knock on the door. he didn't know why his face burned, or why he couldn't distinguished whether the wetness of his face was created by the droplets on his face or the emotion he couldn't quite figure out, but he just needed seonwha to answer the door.

he cringed a bit listening to his own guide track as he always did. he’d thought it be a good addition to the idea he had in motion for an upcoming ep, but something wasn’t quite right about it. the cadences were perfect, the points he wanted to make in terms of vocality were spot on but something was off. sonically it sounded fine, it was emotional yet up beat and after working on it for so long he couldn’t understand how his own voice still hadn’t fit the bill.

he’d decided to let it be for now, allowing the rest of his songs on his phone to play as he packed up his things to head to the studio he’d rented time in.  the familiar tune of ‘gotta go’ took the place of his own voice, seonhwa’s piercing the drums of his ears in the most melodic and lovely way.

“are you fucking serious?” he said to himself, a gentle sigh with his laugh before he tapped one of the pinned chats in his messages.

Seonhwa could relate to that; she wasn’t comfortable either. It was difficult to be around so many people she didn’t know, wanting nothing more than to go home and stay in that bubble that made her feel safe. But this was what she had to do, there was no other option. Like the professional she was, Seonhwa did her best to navigate through this tour in the safest way possible, and anything else should fall into place. “At least we can still see each other. And look at this place, it’s nice. I’m glad your team could get this for you.”

Of course she knew him, and it was why his words meant a lot more because they came from his heart. He didn’t praise her just because he could or thought he had to, but because he really thought so. It was something Seonhwa really appreciated. “That sounds good. I made sure to clear all my schedule so I can stay here for as long as needed.” And this was the best way to take a break, away from everyone with a person she actually felt happy with. Besides, how much practice could she need at this point? Doing so was just a way to keep herself busy, but she could do this every now and then without an issue.

There had been a time in her career where melodramatic ballads had been her things, too many things to say and only a way to do it; by singing about it. But lately, her sound had been shifting into something different, wanting to explore different concepts, and it was working considering how much her petals seemed to love it. But she wasn’t against going back to her roots, yet she didn’t think it was the time to do so yet. Without even realizing it, once the audio started playing, she began nodding along to the rhythm. It was great, actually. She could see herself performing this on stage, with fun outfits and an elaborated choreography. She liked it quite a lot, and it was obvious by the way she reacted. If there was anything about her, it was that her expression betrayed her whenever she felt comfortable around someone enough to relax and be herself. “I love it! This is why you should be my main producer.” And she had been considering for the longest while, yet Kai had his own career to worry about and she wouldn’t drag him into a shit of workload. “Do you have the lyrics?”

“right? the time in between tours was so hectic? it was hard not having you around. it’s like your presence calms me. like everything is going to be okay when you’re around i guess?” he blushed again, the red tips of his ears a stark contrast against his platinum hair. “i’m happy to be back here, i just wish it wasn’t under such…strenuous circumstances.” malachi mused with the scrunch of his nose. “no, yeah, this place is dope. it’s mine for as long as we’re here so of course i’ve tried to stay in it as much as possible.” regretfully he motioned to the blanket and pillow that was left for him on the waiting suede love seat.

his favorite part about working with seonhwa was watching her react. it seemed weird he knew but she was one of the most genuine people he’d ever met. so, when he played her something, he would just glance intently, watching as certain chords and melodies' struck her. good or bad he didn’t care. the simple furrow of a brow or the raise of them. the quirk in her lip when it was really good but she was trying to focus it hadn’t mattered, it was all real. and there were very few places in this industry that he loathed where he acquired real.

“mm well, i have a few little pieces for you? nothing too solid because i want you to really take the lead here.” he gave her a smile reaching over into his backpack and pulling out the decaying song book. the pages had long since been worn and the leather cover had anxious pieces picked from spots on it, tale tell signs of years of swimming through the sludge of his mind to make art. he flipped towards the back, looking for the giant ‘seonwha?!!!’ written at the top of the page that had only a few lines written. “here.”
