Bitfinex Prepares to Go on Crypto Delisting Spree

Bitfinex crypto exchange has announced it will start an immediate delisting spree this Wednesday, removing pairs with extremely low volumes. Bitfinex Delisted Only Illiquid Pairs, Still Carrying Underlying Coins and Tokens Bitfinex has once again reviewed its trading pairs and announced it will start a new wave of delisting soon. Besides a technical difficulty, carrying small-scale coins and low-volume markets can be a doorway for exploits. The removal of these trading pairs is a common measure that serves to consolidate and improve liquidity on Bitfinex, leading to a more streamlined and optimized trading experience for our users Just like the recent Binance delisting, Bitfinex will not remove the tokens entirely, but just their most inactive and low-liquidity pairs. There is no need to withdraw assets, and users are urged to close orders only on the pairs listed in the official message. The exchange removed obscure pairs such as Verge (XVG) against the Japanese Yen. Two additional DAI pairs, for OmiseGo (OMG) and 0x (ZRX) will also cease trading. But the most numerous list of pairs is against Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). Low-volume markets see almost no activity, and lack market makers. In general, Bitfinex has diminished its importance for BTC trading. Most other assets removed were altcoins and tokens with a low appeal, after being decimated by the bear market. Exchange Still Offers Expanded Altcoin Selection Bitfinex already expanded its asset selection to 398 pairs, based on CoinMarketCap data. One of the pairs delisted, Mithril (MITH)/ETH, has a liquidity of only $414. Smaller pairs also reveal liquidity of at most a few thousand dollars. Bitfinex already moved some of its tokens to Ethfinex, the exchange in charge of IPO projects and tokens existing on the Ethereum network. The exchange reports total volumes of around $111 million, significantly lower in comparison to leaders like Binance, OKEx, and Huobi, which easily reach reported volumes in the billions. So far, Bitfinex has not delisted multiple coins, and in fact went on to add new assets through a series of IEOs. Bitfinex also continued to carry Bitcoin SV (BSV) despite other exchanges delisting the ticker. The native token of Bitfinex, UNUS SED LEO (LEO), also trades on relatively low liquidity under $500,000 in most pairings. LEO, however, manages to hover quite near its IEO price of $1, and stands at $0.95 even after significant sell-offs. Before the delistings, Bitfinex was also a victim of a DDOS attack, which stopped trading for a few minutes, but no exploit was registered. What do you think about the latest delistings on Bitfinex? Earlier today, on May 31, prestigious US university Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer ‏noted that the vast majority of proof-of-work (PoW)-based cryptocurrency require less than $1 million per day to successfully carry out a 51 percent attack.

“The cost to 51% attack various coins. Most of these coins cost a pittance to attack. If your savings are in a coin, or anything else, that costs less than $1m/day to attack, you should reconsider what you are doing,” said Sirer.

51crypto, a platform which shows the amount of hash rate and money required to take over a blockchain network through a 51 percent attack, demonstrates that small cryptocurrencies such as Bytecoin, Bitcoin Private, and Ubiq can be attacked with less than a thousand dollars per hour.

Even cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin Gold and ZClassic can be attacked with thousands of dollars per hour, with less than $100,000 per day, according to the site.

51 percent attack is a type of a breach that enables hackers to take control of a blockchain network and carry out double spends and create additional cryptocurrency. Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Verge has already suffered two 51 percent attacks in 2018, which led to the creation of millions of dollars worth of XVG.

While the second attack on the Verge network was caused by a vulnerability in its mining algorithm, the attack was significantly worse than a 51 percent attack because the attacker was able to create millions of dollars worth of XVG with nearly no difficulty or computing power.

Earlier this year, the Chinese Ministry of IT ranked XVG at 13 together with bitcoin, the most dominant cryptocurrency in the market with the longest track record and largest hash rate. The bitcoin community was understandably outraged by the rankings, as it dismissed the security, robustness, and resilience of bitcoin that have been strengthened over the past nine years.

These numbers, as portrayed by 51crypto, show that most small cryptocurrencies can be easily hacked given that sufficient resources can be gathered. The possibility of 51 percent attacks also demonstrate a centralisation issue in the cryptocurrency market, as a mining firm or a mining equipment manufacturer like Bitmain can easily run a 51 percent attack on smaller coins, although highly unlikely.

Most recently, Bitcoin Gold, a cryptocurrency with a $730 million market cap, fell victim to a 51 percent attack. Around $18 million worth of BTG are suspected to have been stolen by the hackers. Edward Iskra, the communications director of BTG, said:

“We have been advising all exchanges to increase confirmations and carefully review large deposits.”

Difficult Calculations

Some experts including cryptocurrency investment firm PDB Capital managing partner Hussam Abboud stated that the traditional method used to calculate the cost of a 51 percent attack could be impractical.

“The traditional methodology of calculating the cost of a 51% attack…might be completely off for networks with a total hashrate significantly smaller than others that use the same hashing algorithm,” said Abboud.

Crypto Market Capitalization Hits 5-Month High Above $185 Billion

The combined value of the cryptocurrency market rose to $185.89 billion earlier today, its highest level since Nov. 18.

While that number has dropped slightly to $184 billion as of press time, the five-month high marks the 10th consecutive week with a bullish open above the prior candle close, meaning there has been a steady increase in value for crypto since the new year began.

The majority of the crypto markets experienced positive growth toward the end of the previous close for the week April 1–7, thanks in part to bitcoin’s breakout last week.

Over the last 24 hours, both bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH) have experienced large increases, resulting in their market capitalizations rising $3 billion and $1.7 billion, respectively.

Amid the overall crypto market increase, bitcoin’s dominance rate has also dropped slightly to 50.6 percent at press time from the 52 percent seen early last week following bitcoin’s price jump.

XRP, however, has only a minimal share of the pie among the top three cryptos, with $200 million added to its total value over the past 24 hours.

Perhaps more importantly, there’s been a greater flow toward the altcoin markets over the week beginning April 1 with Tron’s (TRX) total value rising more than $350 million, while Stellar (XLM) and Verge (XVG) rose by $400 million and $50 million, respectively.
