Philosophy Introduction

   Hey, everyone! My name’s Gabrielle Walker, but everyone calls me Gaby, which fits because I like to run my mouth. Anyway, I’m a rising junior from Laurel, Maryland, a suburb of Washington D.C. I have the best major and minor, respectively, political science and philosophy. My birthday is June 21, the official first day of summer, so it only makes sense that I love the sun and sundresses; I also, love the color blue. I have a very outgoing personality, a great sense of humor, and I’m usually nice; but beware, I have a quick temper.  

    Despite the fact that, I use the term philosophical in everyday conversation, I thought it would be best for me to “Google” it for this assignment.  After Googling the term “philosophical”, I found two definitions, “relating or devoted to the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence” and “having or showing a calm attitude toward disappointments or difficulties”; I consider myself to be 60 percent philosophical. This is because I am a realist, enjoy asking questions to gain a deeper understanding of a subject, and learning about new perspectives and ways of thinking. However, I do not fit the other definition because when I face disappointment or extreme difficulty I become angry and irritated, not calm and collected.  

     I consider myself to be what Trimble describes as a novice writer because I am “unconsciously self- oriented” (Trimble 6).  Also, I currently lack the skill of “anticipating their (readers) reactions” (Trimble 7). I always thought that as long as my writing was clear, concise, grounded in facts, and was able to persuade than that was all it needed to accomplish. Another, related reason I do not feel I am a veteran writer is because I do not “actively imagining a reader” while writing (Trimble 9). This chapter has opened my eyes to what being an expert writer really means. In addition, I enjoyed reading the quote from James A. Michener towards the end; however, in my opinion, I have decent writing skills, “but I’m one of the world’s greatest rewriters” (Trimble 8). To conclude, I look forward to having an enhanced philosophical point of view and being a less selfish writer by course’s end.  Sorry guys, the post got a little long.
