Honestly, I think there would definitely be a part of the public who would acccuse Ambrosius of having been in conspiracy against Ballister with the Director.

Think about it, from an outsider point of view it looks like he only stood to gain from it. Ballister would get out of the way, preserving their way of life and allowing Ambrosius to once again rise to the top. He even got a fancy promotion as a result and was presumably more popular than ever for stepping up in the kingdom's time of need

He was on the wall when the cannon went off. Sure, we as the audience knows that he was trying to stop the Director and there's a few knights who know this as well, but to anyone else? It honestly might look like he was part of it
