Hey I love your art but I also want to know more Joseph Anderson stuff to truly enjoy your work.

What should I watch for the true Joseph Anderson Experience?

For reference I only saw the trolly stuff (actually I'm like watching that compilation you mentioned in a post because it was in my recommended and I ain't finished)

Oh my, that's a bit tricky considering how lengthy video game stream content is.

I guess first of all, the Joe art I post here is incomplete:

I tend to only publish the eye candy and cut out all the context and in-jokes to make it more digestible. I used to keep all the Joe fanart in one handy imgur album, but after imgur TOS changed I moved it over to Discord:

If you find a sketch that interests you, it'll mention the game name as well and you can watch the VOD for full context.

I can recommend some streams/VODs that I think were great and/or tie in with my fanart a lot, but since I usually catch the streams live, I don't always have a specific highlight/compilation version of it in mind:

Video Games: My beloved hobby of all time <3, I'm a huge jrpg fan with my two favorite games ever being Octopath Traveler 1 and Xenoblade Chronicles 1 (Play these games they changed my brain chemistry). Some other genres I'm a big fan of are survival horror and fighting games, though I tend to post about any game that catches my eye.

Motorsports: F1 and Indycar mainly with the occasional Nascar and Motogp :3. I like everyone on the F1 grid but my favorite guys are the Williams boys, Esteban, and George with my favorite team being either RBR or Williams. With Indy, there are so many guys for me to state as my favorite but for teams, I'm a very big Team Penske fan (I'm also a Team Penske fan in Nascar!), the world's most normal Team Penske fan even, with Andretti Global and Chip Ganassi Racing coming in at 2nd and 3rd.

Hockey: Mostly a Dallas Stars fan as I'm from Texas so I lb about them the most but another teams I have soft spots for are Canucks, Devils, Penguins, and Panthers :3. I also will tend to lb any team that has a game on that I'm able to watch i.e on the national broadcast

Happy Melly Monday

Today is yet another art commission blog week. And this week's commission is one of the more expensive ones I have done thus far. And it is done by Gofelem

Where do I even begin with this one. 😅

To start, I really enjoyed Gof's art a year before I got to commissioning them. And I was on his Discord as well. It turns out that he was opening up commissions at the beginning of 2022. And knowing me and my pockets, I ended up commissioning a Melia from him.

What I ended up doing was a lot different than what I did before with commissions. I had to fill out a long form where you had to put reference images, what art commission type it was, etc. And it took a bit to fill out, but I eventually got into contact with Gof through an email chain I was in where we explained the pricing, background reference, etc.

The background and pose specifically was taken from Xenoblade Future Connected. I kind of wanted this to be an anniversary piece of sorts because I like the FC render art. Along with Gran Dell and Alcomoth being the focal point of the background. Melia's pose especially looks great for what I wanted to show off.

Something interesting that Gof sketched out are two other poses for Melia I didn't like the first pose. I find this a very creative way to visualize pose ideas. Of course, I stuck with the first one, but I said to Gof that I may choose the rightmost pose for a later commission. Who knows, maybe that will happen one day...🤔

I guess right here is where I talk about the background of this piece. Because this is perhaps one of the best backgrounds he has ever done. The lighting and the strength of the shadows of the foliage is honestly brilliant. The grass blowing around the area is breathtaking. And the light casting off Alcomoth here is extremely well done. Even going so far as putting light streaks in the sky 😳😳 There isn't too much detail with the background, but there doesn't need to be. I like it so much more in this style.

And then we have Melia herself, which Gof did an extraordinary job with everything about this. From the strands of her hair, to the shading on her boots, to the light of the World Ender, to even just the look on Melia's face. It is absolutely fantastic.

And of course, when Melia has the lighting and shading of the sunset, it literally is the cherry on top to complete the whole piece. It was... amazing. To say the least. I cannot thank Gofelem enough for making one of the most stunning commissions I have laid my eyes on. Period.

And of course, it is my desktop background and still have it there for over a year since I commissioned it. It distracts me from time to time to say the least. 😅

I just want to say... Of all this work, all of this detail, all to make what I think is a masterpiece of Xenoblade fanart. All of it costing a whopping $600. It wasn't cheap, but it is honestly so worth it in the long run and it definitely gave me and Gof a long-standing relationship.

Gof can't be found on Tumblr, but in Twitter/X. And on his Discord server. His commissions are open, but you would have to fill out the form if you want to commission him. Which can be daunting to people commissioning him for the first time. But he is absolutely awesome to talk to and you will definitely get your money's worth talking to him.

i have friends on like discord servers who really like 2 and especially 3 so i don't wanna be a hater without knowing anything about them you know. but i have no real interest myself, even liking the first xenoblade as well as xenogears. and to be honest i don't really engage in any tumblr fandom anymore, when people started saying blorbo that was it for me

Anime the Medium vs Anime the Artstyle

So being the lonely person I am, I've had people look at my shit and say:

What anime is that girl from?

That's when I realise that most of the times, the characters aren't actually from a specific anime, but rather just appear so.

My arguments with one of my good friends also led me to think further about this comparison.

We were decorating our discord server, deciding who should get the "anime pfp" role

I said that he should get it, since his pfp at the time was Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles

His argument against it was that Xenoblade is not an anime

So in this post, I will be discussing the differences between Anime the Medium, and Anime the Artstyle.

Anime the Medium

a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children. ~Oxford Languages

Looking at various sources, it is generally agreed upon that Anime refers to animation originating from Japan.

Other variations include a broad generalisation of the genre, such as it being "animation broadcasted in Japan to the masses", however this vague definition turns out to be troublesome when "Tom and Jerry" becomes classified as an anime (I will not be discussing this topic any further).

From what I could gather, Anime began its stay in media in the 20th century, with the earliest commercial animations dating to 1917.

There have been some original works solely in this medium (such as the works of Studio Ghibli), but Anime is commonly known for being animated adaptations of the following:

Light Novels

Manga

Video Games

Since then, the medium has expanded tremendously, backed by the growth in the number of production companies, and has itself a loyal fanbase due to globalisation (weebs).

Due to this major growth in popularity, it is difficult to find an individual in a first world country that does not know what Anime is, nor recognises its artstyle.

Artstyle here is a generalisation of the way Anime is drawn or computer generated. It takes into account the development of the style since the inception of the medium, in a 2d format. Take note that this is distinct from Western Animations. Although there have been attempts to make Western content with the Anime artstyle (success varying), the artstyle tends to feel outdated. If you have examples of where this is not true, feel free to correct me.

Anime the Artstyle

I have a Venn diagram to help you visualise this argument the same way that I do:

As you can see, Artstyle actually encompasses Medium.

This is central to the argument, as in my opinion, for a piece of media to be considered part of Anime the Medium, it needs to fulfil a few conditions:

Japanese Origins

Animation

Anime Artstyle

With extra attention on the last point, it shows the relationship between the artstyle and medium.

Without its distinctive artstyle, it's difficult to consider a piece of media as Anime

So why does Anime the Artstyle extend beyond the Medium itself?

The popularity of Anime as a Medium has undoubtedly inspired a myriad of artists to adopt the artstyle into their work as well, regardless of whether it is used in an animation or not.

As all things in life mirrors the ever falling nature of dominoes, this led to the development of entertainment content that were not expressely Anime, but shared its artstyle. Some notable pieces of media affected by this Animisation include video games and comics.

New forms of media also developed from this, a good example bring VTubers.

A VTuber, or virtual YouTuber, is an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar generated using computer graphics. ~Wikipedia

If you search up the term "VTuber" on any search engine, one of the things that become apparent quickly is that most of their models resemble characters that would appear in Anime. Not characters FROM Anime, mind you, but they look like they would fit in one due to the artstyle.

So, what does this entail?

With media now occasionally adopting this Anime-esque artstyle, it's quite easy to encounter a situation where something Looks Like It's Anime, while not actually being part of the medium. Thus, the question:

"What anime is this from?"

Becomes surprisingly hard to answer without sounding like an asshole.

There are a few possible arguments, as well as their implications, to consider here:

Media outside the medium of Anime should not be considered Anime even though the artstyle is shared (How do we differentiate between the two at first glance? Or is that not important? Does the artstyle lose its distinctiveness and significance then?)

All of the media with the artstyle are considered Anime (This could create confusion between genres, and responding to the "What anime" question with "hololive" could be awkward)

The medium and artstyle should be kept separate but acknowledged so as to preserve the identity of the genre (Not everyone is aware of this difference in the first place, so answering the "What anime" question could become inefficient)

Conclusion

So what anime is it from? Well it's really up to you how in-depth you wish to go with your explanation. Or you can just direct them to this post.

This post isn't meant to strictly define anything about the subject matter. As you can clearly see, it isn't particularly well researched. This is just my thoughts on an argument I've come across a few times.

Happy #MellyMonday again!

Time for the weekly Monday blog. Where I share the process of the making of my Melia commissions. This next one comes from @deebyfeeby. IT'S CHIBI MELIA!!

Now you all know the hype of Xenoblade 3 daily updates after Xenoblade 3's second trailer came out and showed us a whole bunch of things? Including the battle system and heroes and stuff? Well, what came along with it is the main characters turned chibified!

What spawned from this is multitudes of fanart depicting OCs and other Xenoblade characters in a chibi form. They were all so cute! (Image below is from one of my Xenoblade update videos)

In short, Xeno fans ate it all up. I'm glad the XC3 chibis we got were included in the actual game as a way to choose classes.

This singlehandedly made a lot of artists become inspired to do commissions based off of the chibi style. One such artist is Pheobe. Who is one of my good friends and a great artist on top of it all. As soon as the Xenoblade JP Twitter account posted the first chibis we saw, Pheobe found a great opportunity to capilize on this. And that is to open up XC3 styled chibi Ko-Fi commissions for 15 euros each at the time. First come, first served.

That's when I immediately made the Ko-Fi offer in the second batch she was doing at the time. It was affordable, and I really only wanted FC Long Hair Melia anyways. So I went with it. Low and behold, she was done with it literally the day of. It was awesome!

I then made the post on my main account and it did very well. Amassing over 900 likes. At the time, this was my most liked post, and I was very happy about this, and the work Pheobe put into it.

I was so happy with it in fact, that I edited the background to have Gran Dell from Future Connected in there, and a pink circular border and made it my pfp on Twitter for a few months and currently my Discord server's pfp.

Until this day, this is one of my favorite XC3 styled chibis made by an artist. And I'm not being biased in this. FC Melia's design has a lot to it. And being able to put it off in a miniature styled form I would give high respect to.

I currently use the chibi as an emote for my Discord server. But not quite as spammable as the Enni emote. It works for what it can do.

Pheobe still does Xenoblade Chibi commissions. I highly recommend commissioning her one when they open up again. They are very affordable and they are just nice to have as a pfp.

She also does animated Xenoblade Style chibis for 10 euros extra. And guess what I did????

That's right. SHE IS ANIMATED NOW!!!!

I did this a lot later after she opened these up late last year, but it is well worth it to have. All because you can add a whole bunch of things that are related to her class. Like you can customize the class symbol, if she is the an attacker, defender, or healer. What she excels at (the SDBS thing). And the name of the class with mine being "Imperial Triarch". Which fits her role well with what happens at the end of Future Connected. As the ruler of her people that she so desperately deserved.
