AITA Tag!
No one tagged me but I enjoyed the first one so much that I have decided to do it again.
Rules: Make an Am I The Asshole post (look at r/aita for examples if you haven’t seen them ) for an OC
From Kell:
AITA for “Betraying” Xaeren before his ritual to kill a goddess?
Ok so I met Xaeren when I accidentally stole a rune and money from him in Daliva. I didn’t know who he was at this point, but I used that money to buy passage on a ship to Zairel where I forged papers to get into the lysandri school of magic. At school I heard of Xaeren. An assassin, the most powerful caster in generations, a traveller and a storyteller. He had recently returned to the city and people were intrigued. Anyway, I had carried the rune with me all the way to the school, not knowing what it was and Xaeren found me there to reclaim his property. We spoke for a while, I gave back the rune and realised he really wasn’t as malicious as some stories made him out to be. I was struggling at school and he offered to teach me magic and in return I would give him information about a variety of different higher level spells house lysandri kept.
He was particularly interested in the work of Muliva Kazi and the magestones and he told me he planned to kill the goddess of death. I laughed this off at first but the deeper we got in this the more serious he seemed. He taught me so much magic and he was always kind to me but I began to realise how powerful he really was and that I might be getting in well over my head.
I asked him exactly what he wanted me to do and he told me he would never put me in danger, but if I wanted out I should tell him then because soon it might be too late.
I chose to join him. I wanted to learn more magic, to grow more powerful and succeed as a mage and he was my path to that, if it all got too much I could easily cut and run back the the lysandri mages.
This became more complicated when the lysandri mages found out about his plan and labelled him a wanted criminal for crimes against the natural order. He had found a way to kill the goddess and I had agreed before the mages came into it but this made me start to question my allegiance.
The day before the ritual I told him I could not do it. I couldn’t sabotage my entire career, my entire life as a lysandri mage just for his unachievable project so I left him. He was angry saying I had betrayed him, that I was his way back but even in the end he didn’t push me to help if I wanted to leave.
They told me he died in the ritual and took the goddess with him.
I just wonder if anything would have been different had I been there for him. I don’t regret putting my career first, I am now a high mage and a member of the ivy council because of that decision. Still I wonder was it wrong to leave him there after all he did for me?
So AITA for ‘betraying’ him before his ritual to kill the goddess?

Summarising the Kell and Xaeren WIP in one sentence.
Magic man finds curious girl, uses her to help kill a goddess.
It seems so easy to write when you put it like this.

hi pae pae!!!
what is your process of designing your maps? and how do you approach lore? how does that brilliant mind of your work to create such fascinating history and complex worldbuilding?
je would like to know the trade secrets pretty pls
p.s. how far along are you on xaeren? if it’s not far enough, im afraid i’m going to have to start protesting soon… 😔
p.p.s. before you say school is taking up your time—understandable. have a great day. keep being brilliant. i just really want more xaeren content.
p.p.p.s. in my head, i imagine xaeren as so mighty fine that there’s an occult in some middle school of a suburban neighborhood with an old classroom turned into a shrine for his feral fangirls to host club meetings simping over him
that’s it’s. that’s all the pspspsppsss i have. miss you! have a great day! cheerios!
Hello Naveena! Lots of questions! We will go through them one at a time.
What is your process of designing your maps?
So with maps I will start by just noting down the history and current function of the city which gives me an idea of style and layout e.g. all of the cities that were part of the Laith’Edrels have lots of circular designs whereas a modern altic city may have more typical alleyways and rectangular buildings Next I plot in the districts of the city, like where the upper class live, where the high streets are etc. I also add any key buildings at this time, like a plot relevant church or a mages tower. Lastly I go back in and draw boxes and house shapes for 2 hours.
How do you approach lore?
A lot of my lore is just a set of stories where I look at a place on the map, or a group of people and go ‘what could have happened here?’ The bigger worldbuilding points like the dissolution came from me wanting to have magical decay from fewer more powerful beings to more less powerful beings, so I needed gods. However it always frustrates me when there are canonically gods in a world who just sit back and ignore the world crashing and burning as one frustrated hero has to fix the problem, so I made a reason for them to be gone
History and worldbuilding
Honestly a lot of my history writing was based off of the large amounts of real life history I read in my free time. Studying how cities and empires develop then putting my own spin on them because magic would change some things. Worldbuilding comes from my maps really. I will label different cultures on the map then come up with myths and legends for that culture, magic specific to them or their ancestors, wars and internal conflict. Then that spirals into pages of notes on the socioeconomic background for Onkairel. It is lots of fun.
“would like to know the trade secrets” she says after writing a whole book with detailed political lore and plenty of depth to the world.
You know the secrets. You also know the secrets to actually writing the book too.
So about Xaeren…
I will be writing the scene where he meets Kell soon so I will tag you in it when I do, but you are right about the school work :( so it may take a little while.
“an occult in some middle school of a suburban neighborhood with an old classroom turned into a shrine for his feral fangirls to host club meetings simping over him”
So you say that jokingly… No, to be fair he isn’t known for his an appearance but he is quite well known in Zairel as an assassin and member of house Hiresias. He is terrifying and intriguing to many because of his unique magic that Lysandri can’t explain so I would not be surprised if there was discussion of him in the lower ranks of Lysandri and Hiresias.
I will write some Xaeren soon. Have a lovely day <3

OC most likely to tag.
Thanks @drchenquill for the tag!
Most likely to forget important things
After some deliberation, I will have to go with Xaeren. Not because he is particularly absent minded, but because he will always have a higher priority in his mind than your ‘important thing’. That’s why he keeps so many notes in his coat pocket, because he purges the thoughts from his mind so he can think clearly.
2. Most likely to fall for a prank
Daimion. Marsh pranked him mercilessly growing up and Dai always fell for it.
3. Most likely to get drunk
Marsh. When he was out of prison he would get drunk quite often with army colleagues just because he liked the feeling.
Your statements are:
Most likely to run from a fight
Most likely to get married
Most likely to win the lottery

5 Favourite fics…
I hate ranking them, it feels like choosing between my children. I will instead choose the best for me to write.
1.Xaeren
This is the WIP I have written the most of, I will finish it I swear. Xaeren’s magic and fight scenes are always so fun to write, especially if he is limited in which runes he has and has to come up with creative solutions. Kell is also cool. Writing magic lessons is cathartic because I have wanted to tell people about this for so long.
2. Paeliae
I have written the second most of Paeliae. (3 chapters. I am so proud of myself)
Anyway, I like this one for its more humanising view of gods and I like thinking about immortality and its implications. I can also put longer more beautiful descriptions in this one because it has a slower pace.
3.Marsh and Daimion
I always love writing Marsh. He is just objectively funny and Daimion is the perfect foil for that. Also just writing a happy character is good for me.
4.Tyro and Apollo
I love them, I do, but they are so hard to get right. These were my first characters in this world so I am a bit of a perfectionist with them. That makes them hard to write.
5.Ez and Rin.
They are so cute together. I just haven’t really done much with them.

@honeybewrites and @willtheweaver for the tags!
I have left this far too long, so in return you get 2 snippets.
From Xaeren:
‘You know that when you kill her, someone else will just take her place. Nature abhors a vacuum.’
Xaeren sighed. ‘Yes, I know. The intent when you remove a cancer, is for healthy cells to replace it.’
From Paeliae:
‘You don’t listen to me, but every piece of advice I have given you has been correct.’
‘I wonder, is that because of your wisdom, or do you just leave the decision long enough for your theories to be confirmed before you speak. You may be right, but you are passive and consistently late.’
It keeps trying to autocorrect Paeliae to Paella. I am frustrated.

OC Head-canon tag
Thanks @the-letterbox-archives for the tag!
Rules: Use this character headcanon generator to get some head cannons about your characters.
I will go with Apollo, Marsh and Xaeren for this one.
Apollo
Apollo is oblivous to any and all romantic interest someone may show them.
True. He is a little busy trying not to die.
Apollo desperately needs a hug but doesn't know it and refuses to ask for one.
This one is incredibly accurate, he is idolised by so many and has to live up to their expectations of strength and resilience.
Apollo cries while watching disney movies.
No, Apollo has seen worse than Disney movies.
Marsh
Marsh does intricate and expensive cosplays.
This hasn’t ever happened in canon, but I would love to see him try.
Marsh is constantly singing for no reason.
This could be true, but the reason would be because it annoys Dai.
Marsh has chronic nightmares.
No, he is quite happy with his life as it is. At least at the start of his arc he has very little to be concerned about.
Xaeren
Xaeren has a knife under their bed.
I would not be surprised. There is one in his pocket constantly and that has saved him in the past.
Xaeren is smart but also very stupid.
True. He is very good with magic and runes, but then decides to confront a goddess.
Xaeren has a sword under their bed.
Now this is pushing it. Marsh however would 100% do this.
Xaeren does not know what sleep is.
True, since returning from the Demi-plane he doesn’t sleep much. He has a big task.

Can I get an info dump on runics? they have been intriguing me.
Yes absolutely!
Just as a warning this post is very long but split into sections so just read the parts that interest you!
Basics
So runic is a method of casting which involves fully breaking the simple components out of strands. The rune itself acts as a catalyst to reduce the energy needed to break those very strong bonds.
Over the years the misconception has spread that the runes themselves contain energy but that is not true. One specific rune contains ‘active sites’ for a specific combination of simple components that already exist in the world around them, that when joined produce a strand that has the effect of the desired spell.
Invention
They were first invented by the god Ezemhaziel and his partner Rin. They invented the mechanism and designed 5 functional runes before Rin was murdered by mortals with the blessings of other gods.
In Ez’s grief he cursed the runes so that anyone who would use that great power must have suffered the same grief Ez suffered. This was mainly to prevent their work being ransacked and abused by mortals and it is now deeply engraved on the very method of casting runics use.
Rediscovery - The cults
After Ez left the world the runes were abandoned for a long time until a group of travellers (The Ponturesi) stumbled on the lab where Ez worked and sought to claim the power of runes for themselves. They started researching the runes themselves but being unable to use them they nearly gave up. Eventually they decided to share the discovery with two other small scale researchers nearby (The Avandil and Vandris) to see if they could make sense of it. Upon researching the runes and Ez their creator, a member of the vandris found an old folk tale which told a variant of the Arcanic dawn, (How mortals frost got magic) in which Ez turned his back on and cursed his creations so to use them you had to be as broken as he was. The Vandris brought this theory to the Ponturesi who at first had some moral objection to hurting people just to test a theory but eventually agreed to testing with pre-traumatised people. Over the next few years, they carefully selected and collected 5 children and young adults who were living on the streets and took them in to be subjects for their experiments. They morally justified this by giving them good quality housing and food despite literally giving them the magical equivalent of nuclear weapons to test.
The first few children were just unable to use runes so were dismissed but of the 7, 1 seemed to show potential. This kid had seen his closest friend die a year before so he didn’t just have trauma, it was grief.
This kid was given the original rune Piko, the rune of Unbinding, and the first time he cast it he unbound the bricks in a wall from each other then broke apart the bricks and when the walls were nothing but rubble he turned to a person and unbound the skin from their flesh and the flesh from their bones until the giant power over use burned the kid up.
Not only did this prove that the runes work, it also showed the Ponturesi how powerful they were. This display of raw power only drove them further into their research and they became more willing to use extreme methods to harness this power.
Xaeren
Around this time a young boy’s parents were brutally murdered in their house. The killer was never found but the child was in the house when it happened and managed to survive and make it to social services.
The Ponturesi view him as the perfect candidate for their next trial so they take him in. They decide this time to slowly introduce him to magic and magical theory before they give him runes, so this kid is raised by a bunch of researchers who intensely tutor him in magical theory (they do not treat him well as you can assume) and also keep him isolated and hidden so if he too dies in the process, no one will come looking for him.
When he is deemed old enough, he is given the rune Xaeren and placed in a room alone. The thinking is that a rune that affects souls with no souls in the vicinity will be less dangerous.
The kid does learn to cast runes and is named Xaeren after the rune. He becomes proficient in all 5 of the original runes but the Ponturesi keep mistreating him. (Shockingly they weren’t just doing it for the runes but they were just bad people) Eventually he makes a plan and tears all of their souls from their bodies. Lots of fun.
New Runes
Over his lifetime Xaeren invents 42 more runes all made to fulfil a specific need he had at the time. This leads to the runes being disproportionately focused on expedited movement, destruction, general annoyances etc.
But there are hypothetically millions of different runes that could be made to do almost anything.
The New Runics
In the modern day the Runic cults are still very much around. They have expanded their operation since Xaeren and now usually each family has from 5-30 active Runics at any one time. This includes Apollo and Tyro who were both taught runes by the Ponturesi. Over time the cults have become less concerned with taking only pre-traumatised children and have started instilling more trauma themselves. It only seems to be getting worse. Apollo’s story focuses on them trying to take down the runic cults and stop more kids getting hurt.
Thanks for the ask! Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

Character Crime Bingo.
Thanks @darkandstormydolls for the tag!
I did this bingo for Marsh (red) and Xaeren (Yellow)
Some interesting mentions: Marsh has never committed manslaughter. He has only ever killed when he has intended to. Xaeren has only ever killed one person accidentally. He considers murder to be wasteful.
There are no cars or internet, so no cyber crime or DUI.
These two tend to commit crime for fun or work rather than necessity, so tend away from thievery as it would not really benefit them.
Here is the blank template:

hello. i was reading history of the runes and i saw this and i have questions if that’s ok.
“The god visits him because of things he did in that period we ignored.”
what did he do?
thank you. 🙂
Ok so the history of runes post is a little outdated on the Xaeren lore but it gets the general concepts right.
The Goddess Schaeres eventually finds Xaeren for two main reasons.
His parents were necromancers which is a big issue for the goddess of unnatural death so she took them to her realm. Xaeren was there when this happened so he saw the goddess come for him, but she missed him because he was hidden. She goes to complete her task from so many years ago
2. The more important reason is because, after seeing her take his family as a child Xaeren spends many years paranoid that she will come for him and essentially writes his own fate by trying to blackmail the goddess.
The method of blackmail essentially goes like this: If Xaeren can bind living souls into her death realm then tie that binding to his life force, then she can’t kill him without these souls escaping death. And the goddess’s whole thing is stopping people from escaping death. This plan ensures that she cannot kill him directly which in the short term is good.
So Xaeren gets to work binding souls to a death realm. Now turns out some people would rather their enemies souls bound to a death realm so Xaeren earns money while building up this plan.
His method is actually not bad, when Schaeres comes for him the first time, his plan works and she is not able to kill him without releasing the souls he bound, but being a goddess she has other options than killing him.
I give you the abyss! An endless prison with no death, just amnesia and sensory deprivation.
Thanks for the ask!

Character Poll ~ Antagonists
Thanks @theink-stainedfolk and @the-golden-comet for the tags!
There are so many, how will I choose????
Kala Vandris
A 19 year old runic who is sent by the Vandris (runic cult) to kill Apollo. He is clever and determined to prove his worth to a ‘family’ who have abused and manipulated him his whole life. He channels that built up anger and resentment at whoever the Vandris point him at, until he meets Apollo.
Schaeres
The neutral goddess of unnatural death. Her realm, Tamir’sul, houses all souls that died before or after they were supposed to. She also prevents necromancy in some cases, so when a young Xaeren’s parents start messing with the dead she takes them. Xaeren sees it happen and knows Schaeres would take him too if she knew who he was. She is vindictive and powerful and will hunt Xaeren into death and beyond.
The Dieral Gods
This is all of the gods whose domains don’t require mortals. (E.g. a god of knowledge would require knowing creatures whereas a god of the wind does not require living things) They are at war with the mages who tried to gain immortality and supplant them. The most powerful and supposedly oldest Dieral god is the god of light, he has Rin Killed. We hate him. >:(
The Ponturesi
A runic cult which routinely adopts and abuses children so they have lost enough to use the runes. They have been known to train soldiers of wars, perform secret research for the government and “raised” Apollo and Tyro.

OC Head-canon tag!
Thanks for the tags @drchenquill, @illarian-rambling and @seastarblue
Ok, we are doing Xaeren, Apollo and Marsh.
Xaeren
Xaeren is not allowed to drink energy drinks.
10/10, he is already kept awake by a new level of hyper focus, energy drinks would not help.
Xaeren can't make the voices go away.
8/10, true. It’s his own voice though.
Xaeren is oblivous to any and all romantic interest someone may show them.
100000/10 He is so oblivious to anything outside of his purpose. If you aren’t a threat he will straight up ignore you.
Apollo
Apollo has an intense fear of water.
3/10, not in that sense but he was terrified when he first saw the ocean. He had never conceived of so much water in one place. This is after the events of the story.
Apollo chews their nails when nervous.
6/10, No but he fiddles a lot with his runes.
Apollo believes in ghosts and insists on trying to summon one at every sleepover.
4/10, Ghosts are reall and he 100% could summon one. He hasn’t yet.
Marsh
Marsh tackles and wrestles people to show affection.
10/10, True. He and Marsh used to wrestle each other for fun in their military days. Now Daimion is uncomfortable.
Marsh has not showered in two and a half weeks.
0/10, He really cares about hygiene. Much more that he cares about human life.
Marsh doesn't own a single pair of matching socks.
7/10, Marsh doesn’t own many clothes. He was in the military then in prison, neither really lends itself to a range of outfits.

i can't remember their names on the top of my head, but the weirdo bult people who start with an a that torture/abuse children experimentally for magic research purposes that xaeren was with for a bit--does he ever get revenge on them? do they ever suffer?
Yes. They very much suffer. Honestly the Ponturesi were so successful for a long time, but if they mess up once, they have a very powerful and angry child ready to destroy them,
In Xaeren’s case they acted as the first human trials of his soul binding theory. He used his namesake rune (Xaeren) to tear their souls from their body and bind them to Schaeres’s realm. They later add to his blackmail of the goddess when he threatens to release the souls.
So yeah, revenge does occur. The second he gets the opportunity he leaves that house and never goes back to that country again.
Thanks for the ask!

how many installments are in xaeren's series? just one? multiple? what is the plot of each and do you have names?
I am terrible at naming things so no, as of yet they have no names.
So I have only plotted the first book but I have many ideas for a part 2. There also might be a prologue of Xaeren before the plot when he was growing up and he may tell this story while on trial with the lighthouse keepers many years later.
Spoilers below the cut for Xaeren.
Ok so Xaeren will obviously not be in book 2 if that happens because he dies at the end of 1, but book 2 would be about the lasting impacts of the mages figuring out how to use, and therefore break, magestones. It will likely be about Kell and the gang having to stop the mages from breaking magestones and preventing the release of many world destroying gods in their mission to regain the magic that their ancestors lost.
