“Can someone please open the door?” Mya knocked on the door with her forehead. “I’m dying out here.”
The door opened by an inch, Wooseok peeking through. “Why can’t you open the door?”
Mya held up her hands, each weighed down with bags. “My hands are full.”
He squinted, but opened the door anyways.
Mya sighed and hurried in, dropping her bags on the couch before stopping to unlace her boots. “I thought I would never make it up those stairs.”
“Why didn’t you take the elevator?” He asked, leaning over to look in her bags. “And where were you?”
Mya kicked him away. “Christmas shopping. And now I’m going to go hide them so you don’t snoop.”
“But I wanna.”
Sliding into her bunny slippers, Mya recollected her bags and stood from the couch. “If you snoop, you don’t get a present.”
Wooseok just rolled his eyes, heading back to the kitchen.
Mya hauled her bags into her room. Yohan looked over from his bed, but otherwise didn’t react as she hid the bags in her closet.
“Oppa. How do you feel about ordering a pizza?” She asked, jumping onto her bed.
He looked over from his phone. “Last time we did you ate half and made yourself sick.”
Mya gave her sweetest smile, pulling her pink blanket over her and snuggling up. “But it was so worth it.”
Yohan grinned. “You’re cute. I’ll order it.”
“Perfect.” Mya grinned. “Can you make sure that-”
Her phone started ringing, vibrating against her pillow. “Who’s calling me?”
Yohan shrugged. “Answer it. I’ll just order the pizza.”
Mya sighed, grabbing the phone. It was an unrecognized number, but she hit accept anyways and held the phone up to her ear. “Hello?”
“Hello? Mya?”
Mya’s eyes widened, and she sat straight up in her bed. “Mom?”
Yohan shot her a look at her sudden switch to Japanese, concern growing in his eyes as he watched Mya start biting on her pinky nail.
“Yes, it’s me. Your father is here too.”
“Oh, hi Dad.” Mya offered nervously. “I didn’t...your name didn’t come up in my phone.”
“Isn’t it the phone you got in Korea?”
“Yeah.”
“We haven’t called since you’ve been in Korea.” Her father explained. “We got the number from Aito.”
“Right.” Mya sighed. “Well, it’s so nice to talk to you guys. You haven’t been working to hard, are you?”
“We always work hard.” Her mother reminded. “We all have jobs.”
Mya felt her heart sting a little bit. “I mean...it doesn’t hurt to take some time for yourself.”
“Yes, actually that’s what we wanted to talk to you about.” Her father said. “We have an amazing opportunity.”
“A promotion?” Mya asked. “That would be amazing.”
“More like a transfer.” He told her. “I’ll be working at the University now.”
“Wow, Dad, that’s so cool.” Mya tried to sound supportive. “I know you always wanted to work there.”
“It’s a good first step.” Her mother said. It sounded like she was trying to agree with Mya, but she always seemed to turn Mya’s positivity into some sort of process towards their success. “But we have a good opportunity for you.”
“For me?” Mya tilted her head. “Mom, I’m not really able to do anything right now. I’m still in X1 for another five years.”
“You aren’t currently promoting.” Her father explained. “But we can get you into the university. So you can come back and study, and hopefully work on our backup plan, so that -”
“Dad-” Mya wasn’t sure if she’d ever cut her father off before. “The backup was in case I didn’t debut. I did. I’m not going to university.”
“Mya, what if something happens with your group.” Her mother cautioned. “You need a backup plan.”
“I don’t.” Mya insisted, swallowing her nerves. “I’m here. And I’m staying here. Thank you for worrying about my future, but I’m happy in Korea. Please...please just let me be happy.”
She could practically hear the disappointment through the phone.
“We should’ve listened to Aito.” Her mother whispered. “He said she wouldn’t listen.”
“He humours her.” Her father answered. “He’d let her make whatever stupid decisions she wants.”
Mya bit her lip. “If there isn’t anything else, I have to go. But I’ll talk to you on Christmas?”
“I have work.” Her mother said. “We have real jobs, remember?”
“I heard you the first time.” Mya frowned. “Bye, Mom. Bye, Dad. Merry Christmas and i’ll talk to you later.”
The line went dead.
Mya slammed her phone onto the bed with as much force as she could muster, throwing herself back into the cushions.
Her parents had never understood. They thought she was throwing her life away, and they’d never made any secret of the fact that they though she would come crawling back to them.
“Mimi?” Yohan said quietly, breaking her out of her seething. “What was that? Who made you angry?”
“I’m not angry.” She answered, turning away.
“Was it...” He hesitated to even say the words. “Was it your parents?”
Mya nodded. “They wanted me to go back to Japan to go to university.”
“Why?” Yohan pushed himself up on his elbows. “You’re part of a group.”
“Yeah, well, it’s not a real job.”
Mya stared at the wall, so she didn’t see as Yohan stood, walked over to her bed, and carefully lay down behind her.
“Mimi?” He asked. “I don’t know if I’ve ever asked. But why don’t you talk to your parents?”
Mya sighed, rolling over to face him. “Because they think that my career choice is a humiliating mistake.”
“Yeah, but you proved yourself.” He shook his head. “I don’t understand why they haven’t come around.”
Mya thought for a moment, before deciding to tell the story.
“I wanted to come to Korea for so long, but my parents wouldn’t let me. Aito surprised me with tickets, he bought them without telling my parents. They freaked out the day before I left, screaming at him and telling him he was a disappointment to the family. And he told them that if they wouldn’t let me be happy, he’d just follow me to Korea and cheer me on from there.”
Yohan felt his mouth drop open. “I knew he payed for some stuff, but...”
Mya nodded. “He payed for the flight, for my hotel for the month I spent doing auditions. And even once I was at a company, he still sent me an allowance every week because my parents cut me off.”
“And you don’t talk to them because the last time you saw them in person they were mad at you?”
Mya shook her head. “No. I don’t talk to them because Aito was willing to throw it all away to make sure I got to follow my dream. And I can’t disappoint him, and I can’t make things any harder between him and my parents.”
“You’re making him proud.” Yohan promised. “You don’t need any stupid university. Look at me, I did the same thing as you and I turned out great!”
Mya gave a small laugh. “Well....you’re kind of dorky.”
Yohan grinned. “That’s why you love me.”
“True.” Mya nodded. “But seriously, thank you, Oppa. It’s not easy being so far away from home. But with you guys, I feel like I’m home.”
Yohan felt his heart melt a little bit. “Okay, that’s it.” He sat up.
“What’s it?” Mya sat up with him. “Was that too cheesy?”
He poked her nose. “Of course not. Now I just need to prove that I’m way better than your parents and any other stupid university.”
“And how will you do that?” Mya smiled.
Yohan rolled his eyes. “Well, we’re ordering two pizzas and eating until we’re sick. And then probably breaking into that ice cream in the freezer. Would your parents approve of that?”
Mya shook her head. “Definitely not.”
“Then we’re doing it.” He hoped up. “I’m on pizza duty. Can you track down some of those snacks I know you have hiding around?”
Mya reached into her pillow case, pulling out a box of chocolate chip cookies. “Got it.”
