Saturday, November 2 — Family Ties One-Shot: Write a one-shot revolving around your character’s family, include 3 family members minimum. (This can include whatever your character’s definition of family is.)
Sunday, November 3 — Short and Sweet One-Shot: Write ten short-short stories of no more than a paragraph long (can star one or multiple characters.)
Monday, November 4 — Instagram Stories: Post five IG stories from a single day of your character’s life. This can be photos of their activities and their friends, but also memes, news, funny videos, and other types of posts!
Tuesday, November 5 — Community Flyer: Make a flyer for a community event that could possibly happen somewhere in town. These can be pre-established or make up something new! Wednesday, November 6 — How Do You Measure, Measure a Year?: Make a playlist of ten songs from the same year that in some way relate to your character. Was it music that would have been popular when they were a freshman in college, or maybe the year they were born?
Thursday, November 7 — Business Savvy Thread: Plot a thread that takes place in one of Swynlake’s businesses with a mun that you don’t currently have a thread with.!
Friday, November 8 — 160 Characters or Less: Write a story using either Tweets or entirely in texts (or some sort of DM) between characters. (This is a one-shot prompt, not something you do with others.)

Sunday, November 10 — Five Times X, One Time Y: Five times your character did a thing and one time … they didn’t (or vice versa). Get creative with what this means, but structure it in that same manner.
Monday, November 11 — The Comment Section: Write ten comments your character has left around the Internet— perhaps a YouTube video of a song that means something to them, a TikTok that they got into a fight in the comments of, a recipe that they tested from FoodNetwork.com… the sky’s the limit! Can be from the same site or different ones.
Tuesday, November 12 – SwynRPVision: Create your own TV show, book, video game, piece of media, etc. that would exist in the SwynRPuniverse which does not exist in ours. Write a description, make a graphic, write a script or do whatever you want.
Wednesday, November 13 — What’s in Your Closet? Come up with fifteen significant clothing items from your character’s wardrobe/life and describe them in detail. Feel free to combine these into full outfits!

Friday, November 15 — Needledrops: The Playlist! Ever want to score a plot like it’s a big moment in a TV show? Pick five songs that you would use as a needledrop for a big RP plot moment – can be ones you were directly involved with or ones you simply admired from afar! For instance, Vidia stealing the crown could be set to “you should see me in a crown” by Billie Eilish. The fall of the Order, with the Knightley family house burning, could be set to “No Mercy” by PVRIS. Write a short description for each.
Saturday, November 16 — Crack!ship AU: Write a crack!ship au. This should be a one shot of any characters in the roleplay, yours or someone else’s! Definition of a crackship: seriously this shit can’t happen but in an alternate universe. Add 10 applicable aO3 tags (enemies to lovers, modern au, etc.) This year, you can either write this as a one-shot, or plot a thread!
Sunday, November 17 — Choose Your Own Swyn AU: Do you have a dream AU-week event? Create your own! Make a graphic, write an opening blurb, and create a sample bio for one of your characters. [example of a past event, you do NOT have to do the whole thing, but this has the graphic/opening blurb]
Monday, November 18 — The Character Tour: Create a travel itinerary featuring 10 significant locations from your character’s life (can be in the same town/city, country, or even around the world!). You can do this in a saved Google Map too.
Tuesday, November 19 — All You Can Eat Buffet! Pick five of these menu categories and come up with a significant food associated with your character and write about their experience with each one: appetizer, soup, salad, beverage, main course, dessert, breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, midnight snack, side dish, cocktail. Images welcome
Wednesday, November 20 – Spotify Wrapped Playlist: What’s your character been listening to this year? Is it Top 40, classic rock, or maybe just rain sounds to help them sleep? Create a playlist of your character’s top 10 songs from this year. Bonus points if you include any other fun Spotify Wrapped tidbits– top artists, top genres, maybe a specific day that they played one song over and over. Have fun!
Thursday, November 21 — Back to the Future Thread: Write either a flashback or a flashforward thread with another mun! (This could be an existing connection or a connection that could possibly happen 10 years in the future! Should be 10+/- years in the past/future.)
Friday, November 22 — Call Me Beep Me: Your character’s phone! List ten contacts, the last five messages, four apps, and screensavers!
Saturday, November 23 — The Final Labor: Based on the final task for the labors, write an AU featuring all your characters in a role. Choose an AU, set out a list of goals for yourself based on tropes within that AU (ex. a red shirt has to die if you’re doing Star Trek or someone in the group gets bitten by a zombie and doesn’t tell the rest if you’re doing an apocalypse), then write to your heart’s content! To count, each character must have a role and your tropes must be laid out beforehand.
Sunday, November 24 — Which Character Are You?: Make a UQuiz for people to determine which of your characters they are.
Monday, November 25 — SWYNRP Memes: Create memes (there are websites where you can do this) about characters, places, or things that happen in Swynlake! (10 minimum)
Tuesday, November 26 — Character #Inspo: Find five existing fictional characters who remind you of your characters (or who inspired your characters). (So, Anya could either do five characters for Holley, or one character for Ting, one for Alana, one for Al, one for Phil, one for Holley, or any other permutation).
Post one piece of inspiration from each character (A gif, a quote, a video clip, a screenshot) and write a little bit about how that character relates to your own. If you’re having a hard time thinking of characters like yours, check out this quiz!
Wednesday, November 27 — Wild Card! Today’s your day to get creative and do something different! Show off a talent that you wish you had more opportunity to show, or just write something that doesn’t fit any of the other prompts!
Thursday, November 28 — Aesthetic for a Friend: Make three different aesthetics for at least three different characters (and at least three different muns)!
Friday, November 29 — Wordy Web-Weaving: Pick a word that is significant to your character or their story and create a web-weaving aesthetic based around that word’s definition. Feel free to incorporate your own writing, others’ writing, and/or media that inspires your writing. Read more about web-weaving here.

SUP GOOSE SUP I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU (ao3 wrapped) :3 :3 :3
(3) What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
(18) The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
(30) Biggest surprise while writing this year?
(Referencing this ask meme)
HELLO HEYYY thank you!
This is something of a reduced exercise bc I've posted five (5) short fics this entire year,, (at time of drafting this),, but nonetheless! x)
3 -- I like how "The Zee And The Lonely Sky' turned out. At first it was a collection of journal entries (guess what else was happening this year that helped inspire that p: ), but then I felt like it'd drag a bit and that,, like,, fleshing out my in-universe idea of how my two characters knew each other would be worthwhile. And it was fun \o/ Fallen London game... good.
~
18 - This is a much longer answer bc I'm going to take the liberty of rambling about a character in a fic whomst I haven't actually posted yet: Justice x) For my WriMo this year I finally started a DA fic that I've been vividly daydreaming about for like a month but never actually writing, as you do (/jk). It's a post-DA2 into DAI redemption arc for our favourite SJ spirit W; or recovery arc, maybe. This is the summary I made for it in November:
Through an act of violence Anders and Justice were, finally, separated, though at cost to them both. Afterwards, Justice found their way back into the mortal world almost entirely by accident. But only almost. Possessing the still-living body of an elf woman whose mind is somehow missing, once again unable to leave the flesh and unrecognizable to anyone who'd known them before, the spirit makes a pilgrimage of sorts to Skyhold. Apparently there had been an attempt at peace that had gone horribly wrong, and the rising powers tipping the balance in the Mage-Templar War had congregated at the top of the mountain. Justice would join them. When Justice gets to the castle, she finds Hawke, because of course she does.
The idea of a personification of justice as an elf woman in the uhhhh wretched hive that is the rest of DA lore was interesting to me; and also specifically a retroactive / parasocial spite response to trivia I read, that before DA2 was made the writers were considering having Justice merge with Velanna but David Gaider thought that would've made her ""more annoying than she already was"". Fuck off, David I feel like there's a decent amount of fic where Friendship Route Anders and Justice are separated and Anders is for the most part written as being better off, while Justice is able to go back to the Fade, and then just??? Fucks off, I guess?? And is never really mentioned again, which I was not entirely persuaded by. So I decided to try and write something that follows Justice through being separated from Anders and surviving it and then having to, you know,, Deal With All That, especially while the war is going on, bc, like,, I’ve always read Justice’s and Anders’ actions in DA2 as both of them being scared. Justice is more afraid of becoming a demon than anything else, even non-existence,, and it happened; it very nearly cost him and Anders their life even before Anders literally asked Hawke to murder them after committing the worst act they’d ever do.
And while I am uhhh not entirely disposed towards a lot of what happened in Inquisition, I really liked Cole’s storyline of reverting from being a demon, and then having a choice on what he wanted to become; I thought that it’d be interesting to follow Justice down a similar arc.
~
30 - Does "shipping characters I didn't necessarily think about at first" count as s surprise bc if so, Awakening-Anders/Justice, which is at least partially your fault SYRUP :p I specify Awakening bc, not to get kind of maudlin in the middle of a cheerful ask answer about shipping, but unfortunately, Dragon Age (that's it that's the joke)
#Please excuse any weird sentence chunks; my brain is made of beans#Also: 'Retroactive Parasocial Spite Response' is the first album of my imaginary video game-core band#syrupwit#Thank you for the question! <3#asks and answs#Goose's writing tag by Goose#long post

Velociraptor Word Crawl
By: Jocey
This is a crawl to capture a Velociraptor. I thought we needed this in light of all the talk about Velociraptors. I tried to keep this a short word crawl that can hopefully be accomplished in a day. I am open to suggestions. If there is something you think I should add, let me know. Hope you all enjoy!
You sitting in your local write-in with some other fellow wrimos. It is a pleasant day. The lovely sounds of keyboard patter clatter fills the air. Write 100 words as you warm up your own keyboard. You feel all nice and warmed up. It is time to get… BAM! The room falls silent after the deafening noise. You and everyone else look up. BAM! The entry doors to the room go flying to the ground. To your disbelief a Velociraptor walks through the door, glancing around the whole room while sniffing the air. People start screaming and running to the other exits. What do you do?
1. Run! Sprint to the next 100 while you run for cover 2. Hide behind the bookshelf! Do a 5-minute word war as you wait it out. 3. Fight! For the Adventure! Do a 3-digit Challenge while you look for things to throw.
“Hey!” A fellow wrimo yells out to you. He gestures you to follow him. The Velociraptor is charging behind you. You follow this person through the various shelves and through another door. You both run down the hall, hearing the monster running behind you. As you turn the corner, he pulls you into a closet and closes the door. You both keep silent as you hear the Velociraptor run past you and down the hall. You let out a sigh of relief. Write die roll x 10 words as you catch your breath.
“You can call me Jay.” The man reaches a hand out to shake yours. “I am terribly sorry about this all. That Velociraptor is sort of my fault.” He turns and starts going through the closet looking for supplies. “I had heard this year of a Velociraptor Badge for nanowrimo. I thought if I could capture one then maybe we could get answers to what this is all about. The best way to capture one is to summon it here, right? I was still setting up the traps when I accidentally knocked over my device. The jolt caused it to set off. I need your help!”
Write to the nearest 1k as you debate whether you risk your life and help this guy or not.
“To capture the creature we will need to lure it to the trap I set up. It is a device in the other room. It’s job is to shrink the Velociraptor to the size of a tennis ball. Then we can place it into a large gun I have designed. When they are shot out they will turn to their normal size in mid-air. Do you have any ideas on bait?”
A. Use Plot Bunnies for Bait B. Use Yourself as Bait
Path A: “Plot bunnies?” The man smiles wickedly. “Why that is an amazing idea! Go collect the bunnies and I will finish setting up the device. Meet me at the device when you are done.” Complete the most recent post in Write ‘X’ word if… 22 while you run around collecting cute fluffy plot bunnies to feed the Velociraptor. Your arms are full of plot bunnies when you start hearing large footsteps behind you. You can hear the clanking of his nails on the floor and your heart skips a beat knowing what is coming. You dare to glance behind you. Three Velociraptors are coming down the hall behind you. Holding the bunnies you start running quickly to the trap. Write for 3 minutes as you run! You dart in the room. Jay is standing behind the device. You trip on a wire and fall. The plot bunnies tumble out of your arms. You quickly get to your feet and hide behind the device with Jay. Skip to the end.
Path B: “Are you really sure that you want to risk yourself as bait?” Jay weight the moral implications of letting you do such a thing. “Well, it is brave and maybe that is the key.” He hands you a mop stick and a trash can lid so you can draw attention to yourself. “I will be waiting at the trap. Once you get the Velociraptor’s attention, run. Do not hesitate at all, just run. Once they enter the circle taped on the floor then I will engaged the device.” He gives you a concerned smile, “Be careful.” Complete a Song Sprint while you make a lot of noise. (Either pick your own song or choose one from the Song Sprint Forum 5.) Your banging does not take a lot of time to draw some attention. You see a flash of a tail through the hallway in front of you. Soon three velociraptors come running down the hall. You do not hesitate. You run screaming down the hall to the trap room. You did not realize how far from the room you had gone. Write for 5 minutes as you run. You stumble into the room. From all the noise you made, Jay is ready. You dart on the other side of the room just in time for him to see them behind you. Skip to the end
The End: “There are three of them?!? That makes it a Fibonacci!” Jay yells in giddy surprise. You hold your breath as you wait for them to get into the circle taped out on the floor. As the fibonacci enter the circle Jay presses the button. There is a flash of light that engulfs the velociraptors. As the light fades away you see that they have shrunk down to the size of sparrows. You walk closer to inspect them. They jump up and down near your face snapping their jaws. “Be careful!” Jay warns as he walks over. “They might be small but they can still bite your finger clean off!” He grabs them by the necks and places them one by one in their own hamster balls. They make quite the image as they go rolling around the room. Write 100 words as you celebrate! “Thank you for your help! I could not have done it without you!” Jay smiles in appreciation.
(No Plot bunnies were harmed in the making of this crawl)

Once Upon a Time in New York City || Flashback Thread
27. Write either a flashback or a flashforward thread with another mun!
“Now listen kid - yous gotta be quick. It’s all about th’flick’a the wrist.” Dodger instructed easily, walking backwards against the pavement on their way to Central Park so that he could face the kid behind him and give him all of the hot tips on their journey. It was a routine that Dodge had easily fallen into lately, accepting Oliver (or Ollie as he preferred to be called) under his wing and trying to teach him all about the beat of the city.
Today, for example, they were brushing up on the kid’s pick-pocketing skills. Something that was... incredibly necessary in order for them to help the guys pay the rent each month. Tito and Dodger did their fair share of hustling in order to help out and... well now that they had two more mouths to feed... yeah they were going to have to get Ollie in on it too.
“It’s easy, right? We’s just can’t get caught ain’t?”

What Are Tropes and Why Should You Include Them in Your Story?
Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. Campfire Technology, a 2022 NaNoWriMo sponsor, creates writing software to help storytellers write better stories faster. NaNoWriMo writers can try out Campfire’s Manuscript Module for free thisNovember! In this post, writer Amanda Jones shares some of the pros of story tropes:
With NaNoWriMo 2022 quickly approaching, writers everywhere are plotting, planning, and exploring ideas for the worlds they intend to visit come November. This, of course, likely includes drafting the elements of your story from literary tropes!
What are tropes, you ask? The definition has changed slightly over time, but we have come to know them as the commonly used building blocks of the stories we read and write. Not only are they just fun to play with in a setting of your own making, but they help us connect over shared experiences, regardless of the places we are from or the time we live in.
As a member of several online writing communities, I’ve often seen anti-trope discourse such as: “If a book contains X trope, I won’t read it,” or “X trope is so overdone, I can’t stand it.” And it worries me to think there is at least one writer out there who will stop writing their story after coming across something like this.
Because tropes exist for a reason.
You’re probably well acquainted with The Chosen One trope, about the one who came from a place no one has ever heard of. There has likely never been anything particularly special about them until they are called upon to be the hero.
You also know The Evil One and the moment in the story where they raise the stakes by gaining the upper hand—usually in the form of briefly acquiring the one thing you don’t want them to have… Until The Chosen One wins it back by overcoming the odds, that is.
You know these because tropes are as old as storytelling itself. As the familiar bones that make up our most cherished stories, they make us feel more at ease in unknown worlds. You may be adventuring on a different planet or in a new mystical realm, but hey, you recognize that old wizard there!
So the question isn’t how do you write a story without any tropes, but rather:
How do you make tropes unique to your story?
How do tropes take shape and form and establish the setting in your world?
How do they create conflict and how do your characters overcome that conflict?
Ask yourself these questions when planning & ultimately writing your story.
I know there is at least one writer out there telling themselves that their ideas aren’t original, maybe because it’s been done before, maybe for some other reason, whatever it may be. It's important for writers (myself included) to be reminded that it’s okay if you’re not reinventing the wheel. After all, it is already invented—but that doesn’t mean you still can’t soup that wheel up!
Writing is hard enough as it is, never mind comparing yourself to other writers. So write about the tropiest of tropes that ever did exist if that’s what you want your story to include. All that matters is what you do with it.
Still looking for a place to actually write this trope-heavy masterpiece we are speaking of? Hi, meet Campfire. As a proud partner of NaNoWriMo, we are offering our Manuscript Module for FREE during the month of November to all writers participating in NaNoWriMo 2022.
You’ll need an account on both Campfire and NaNoWriMo—free to sign up on each—and then you can simply integrate both from your Campfire account settings beginning October 20th, 2022. We’ll automatically track your writing progress, too, so you have one less thing to worry about.
Good luck this year, Wrimos!
