"Not a marine." He sputtered on reflex, coughing up sea water as his lungs emptied the contents in favor of fresh air. Greedily gulping down the life-giving oxygen before finally managing to look to his savior and blinking in surprise. Just because she'd mistaken him as a marine didn't mean that he was safe to her kind, so the fact that she'd saved him meant she didn't fear him or she was....different.

Clearing his throat he shifted, pulling his bulk further onto the sandy beach she'd pulled him onto, dragging his hat from his head and shaking his head before offering her a tired smile. "Thanks, didn't think I'd make it for a moment there."

He'd thrown himself behind Luffy because of the words that had echoed in his mind from Koby. Not only that, but Garp seemed to have a soft spot for his grandson as well. Actually now that he thought of it, a lot of marines he knew had interacted with Luffy and yet the young pirate was still on the seas. That said something and thus he'd taken the gamble.

So when he saw the attack that she wouldn't be able to block in time he moved without thought. Easily deflecting it and shoving the attacker back. Glancing over his shoulder at the orange-haired navigator, Nami he was pretty sure, before assuming a defensive position at her side. "If I get them pushed into a group can you shock them?"

Little Details: X Drake

Drake has spent time training his lungs so that he can hold his breath as well as freedivers. Currently, he can hold his breath for 10-12 minutes. He makes any devil fruit users on his crew undergo this training as well.

Her words drew a huffed laugh from him that turned into a coughing fit as his lungs expelled linger seawater. Leaving him doubled over and heaving for a moment once more before he reached out and took the den den snail from her, fingers brushing against her skin as he did so since he hadn't bothered to pay attention. Not that he cared if it was her hand or tentacle she'd offered it with. Thought it felt like her hand.

"How'd you know what I was planning to do once they found me?" Taking another deep breath he lifted his head before making the call. Chewing out his first mate for several minutes before informing them where he was before hanging up without waiting for their confirmation that they'd come to get him. It was only thanks to his own sadistic training that he'd survived long enough for her to save him.

He'd purposely spent time nearly drowning to train his lungs so that he could hold his breath as well as experienced freedivers who dove off the coast for shellfish and pearls for a living.

He didn’t seem to be to put off by her rather…morbid declaration that he would’ve died if she hadn’t been there. As he got himself up Rose watched him carefully, checking for any signs that his almost drowning had done some damage. Devil fruit users always reacted badly to the water but he seemed to be doing better than others. As she listened to his breathing start to level out Rose turned back to the ocean to look for the ship he had fallen from.

“I’m sure they noticed you went overboard, but I don’t know if they saw this island.” Rose was fast in the water, especially when she pushed herself to go fast enough to save someone. If they did see anything it would’ve just been the ripples of her darting. Unwrapping her tentacles from herself she searched through her bag for the den-den snail Big News had given her when she started working for him.

“Here, you can use this to call them and bitch them out for not saving you.”

"Fair point." He huffed out a laugh at her blunt assessment of his chances had she not been there. He'd have sunk to the bottom of the sea, drowning far before his body hit the sea floor or was crushed by the pressure. Both thoughts were terrifying and caused him to attempt a weak smile. One side of his lips lifted slightly even as he continued to catch his breath. "Either way, I owe you my life."

Shifting slowly, having not missed how she'd pulled away slightly, he lifted his legs so that he could rest his arms on his knees. Head dropping down to help with his swimming head. One hand lifting slightly as he added. "I don't think I'll do either, just need to catch my breath." And calm his pounding heart beat. There was nothing like almost drowning to scare several years off of your life.

"Sounded like a marine when you hit the water." Rose said softly as she shifted to let the waves lap at her more. "Definitely a devil fruit user." They always sank like rocks and were heavy to pull out of the water, like the ocean itself was trying to drag them down. As he looked over her Rose tucked her tentacles around herself, unsure how he would react.

"You wouldn't have." She laughed, flashing a wide smile even as she kept space between them. In the past Rose had people react badly to her; some because they were just asses and some because the tentacles freaked them the hell out. "Let me know if you're going to puke or pass out. We're still in the tide so if you faint I'd need to get you higher"
