The Winds, as they are known, are a sub-range of the Rocky Mountains. They are less known than their Teton siblings but a bigger range that also contains the highest peak in Wyoming, Gannett Peak (not shown here) at 13,804'. The Winds are also mostly wilderness area with over 150 alpine glaciers and over 1,000 lakes. The Trappers Route is managed as a special recreation management area, located along the North Platte River in central Wyoming. The North Platte River is the only floatable waterway in central Wyoming and has become the destination fishery for the state. Scenic and recreational values of the North Platte River are derived from a combination of environmental factors and management practices. The river is highly valued as a class 1 fishery. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has rated it as a blue ribbon fishery. Game fish species include rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. The most common recreation activities are fishing, floating, waterfowl hunting, and wildlife observation. There are also opportunities for picnicking and camping.
