You didn’t think you’d ever find yourself on Ziggy’s bed like this— A newfound intimacy you were too afraid to fully acknowledge. Romance was something you were never interested in, or, something you were never brave enough to let yourself enjoy. You couldn’t say why, mostly because you yourself didn’t know. That’s why with Ziggy, you’d been introduced to a completely foreign range of emotions— emotions that put a strain on you in a way you couldn’t begin to describe.

You were utterly enamored in such a way that you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy.

There you both lay, staring up at the popcorn ceiling as Every Breathe You Take plays on his old ipod. You had one earbud in your left ear, he had the other in his right. The wires were tangled up into a ball, forcing you two to be too close for comfort. Well, maybe for him. God, you were resentful of the bubbling feeling you’d get when he would brush his shoulder against yours on occasion. Why couldn’t you appreciate the simplicity of being friends? Why romanticize every aspect of your friendship?

Although, you couldn’t help but wonder if he had ever felt the same when he’d look at you. You wonder if he stares at you so long he notices the niche features of your face like you do with the stippled freckles of his cheeks, so faint one wouldn’t be able to appreciate them. Unless that someone were you.

‘Every breathe you take,’

His curls tickle your shoulder, the sheets under your head shift a little. Intrigued, you try to sneak a glance, only to realize he’d already turned his head to look at you.

‘every move you make,’

You mimic his actions, turning your head to face him. His eyes bored into yours, those oblivious pools of burgundy reeling you in. You wonder if the same thing is going through his head right now; ‘I really want to kiss you.’

‘Every bond you break, every step you take, i’ll be watching you.’

Your gaze drifted from his eyes down to the harsh curve carved into the apex of his nose, to the candle-like drip on the end of it. They continue traveling down until they meet his slightly parted lips. “You look pretty like this” He murmurs in a voice so soft, it almost felt reserved for you. Your brows ease a little, blinking in ignorant disbelief. Upon registering his words, heat creeps onto your cheeks almost immediately. His gaze hadn’t left yours, a sense of longing in his eyes.

‘’every single day, every word you say’

“Likewise” You mutter through a shy grin. He lets out a huff of air through his nose, the corners of his lips quirking up subtly. His hand rested beside yours, his pinky moving slowly until it hooked onto yours. His eyes flickered across your face, studying your expression— more so, reaction. Your pulse quickened, pinky instinctively curling into his in return.

His eyes make their way down you face, fixated on every curve and contour until he meets your lips. Subconsciously pressing his lips together, tongue grazing over his narrow upper lip. Your breath staggers, anticipation coiling up inside you.

‘Every game you play, every night you stay, I’ll be watching you.’

While the anticipation was exhilarating, you couldn’t help but feel panic rise within. There’s no way, you think to yourself. He isn’t going to kiss you, is he? You hadn’t even had your first kiss yet! What if you mess it up? Were you willing to jeopardize your friendship over a stupid hypothetical kiss? Are you reading too far into it?

He snakes his hand closer, fingers loosely intertwining with yours. He keeps his focus on your lips, staring with intent before glancing up at you. You were annoyingly conflicted, hesitance clearly written all over your face. But even the most textbook-cues went right over Ziggys head, his gaze unwavering.

‘Oh, can't you see, You belong to me?’

He leaned in, your panic turning more into an impending doom. You couldn’t process any of this fast enough. He crept closer, his eyes dead set on your lips. You haven’t had your first kiss yet. His eyes began fluttering closed, his breath ghosting over your face.

‘How my poor heart aches, Every step you take’

God, no.

‘Every move you make’

You can’t.

‘And every vow you br-‘

In a panic, you yank out the headphone and quickly sit up, slipping your hand from Ziggy’s. His expression falters, cheeks burning in embarrassment. “Shit, sorry, I thought…” He trails off, clearing his throat before tugging off his headphone. “That was stupid.” He shakes his head, scratching his cheek.

What was stupid? The kiss, or you? Please be telepathic.

“No, no!” You halfheartedly wave your hands, a pathetic attempt at reassurance. “If.. If you wanted it, its not stupid. I mean, fuck man. I’m sorry.” Your index and middle finger rub your temples, your free hand clenched around the sheet beneath you, the only thing keeping you grounded. He looks anywhere but you, lips pressed into a line. “It was a mistake, don’t worry about it.” He vocalizes quietly. Not softly, quietly. A difference only you would notice.

A mistake?

Your heart clenches, your nose beginning to sting. Oh my god, you were not about to cry. Not in front of him, not like this. You inhale, scratching the nape of your neck in attempt to feign nonchalance. “I should go, it’s getting late.” You quickly murmur. He feels the weight beside him ease on the bed as you get up and tug on your jacket in a few swift motions. You could feel his gaze burning into you, you don’t dare look at him.

“Uh, yeah, it is.” He replies, looking at his phone; 7:32. “Late.” He echoes.

“I’ll text you.” You quietly voice, already half way out the door. You almost hoped he’d call after you, maybe even run to you and beg you to stay. But unfortunately, it was Ziggy. You hadn’t even heard a bye, but maybe it was better that way. If you’d heard his voice one more time you might’ve burst into tears right there.

On the walk home, you were left with nothing but your thoughts alone. Did he want it? Was it a mistake if he initiated it in the first place? What if he was messing with you? Questions swarmed your head, a million scenarios playing— scenarios where you hadn’t been a coward. Scenarios where you established something more than friendship. You only found yourself caught wallowing in a pool of regret the more you dwelled deeper.

A part of you wants to go back; go back and apologize for being stupid, grab him by the shoulders and smash your lips against his. But it was ridiculous. There’s no way you could face him now. You needed time to process everything- although small, it left you yearning for something. Something outside of plain friendship.

Although, in the midst of your thoughts, you couldn’t help but wonder what Ziggy was thinking. Would you even text him? What if that was the last conversation you’d have with him? It was too soon to tell. You’d have to wait and see.
