Even at this state of hers, Jenna seemed to radiate a soft glow of genuine positivity. Michael had missed that – with everything that was going on in his life, she always seemed to hold her ground and yet have the ability to push him to be better, to see things with a fresh perspective. “Yeah… I do,” he replied, nodding at Jenna with a soft smile. “When you’re all better, we’ll bake those cookies tog-“ he stopped himself, knowing the next word meant that it would be a promise. Would she even be willing after all those times he had let her down? At the mention of Noah, Michael’s brows furrowed, trying to remember. "Perhaps he did your new apartment but uh..." he tapped a finger to his temple, "... I might have forgotten, I'm sorry, Jen."
“Noah and I can come over with food and check in on you once we settle you at your home tomorrow hopefully?” Michael suggested. He knew how much Jenna valued her independence and judging from the frown and distanced gaze of hers, she must be thinking of her car – or rather the lack of it. “Heeeyy! I thought you guys would be inside and not out here drinking coca like a couple of boomers,” Noah teased as he approached them. He wore a huge smile once his gaze landed on Jenna. “Hey you,” he said softly, bending slightly to give Jenna a hug. “You gave me and pops a scare last night.” When he pulled away Noah eyed the blonde before plucking out Michael’s cocoa cup and drank from it. “But I must say even when you’re on a wheelchair, you’re still a knockout.” And that statement earned him a smack at the top of his arm. “Noah, for god’s sake. Some respect. Jenna isn’t one of your pals in school.” The teenager rubbed his arm as if Michael had hit him hard. “You see? This is what he’s like when you’re not around anymore,” Noah feigned disappointment, inching towards Jenna. “You’re thoroughly missed.”
Even though he tried to hide it, Jenna could see the hurt across his face and she knew the pain. She’d never compare her life to his but she’d been there when her own father had passed and it never got easier, you just learn to deal with the pain more. “You know deep down he appreciates everything you do for him right.” Of course he had to know, if there was anything about the community around Michael, Jenna knew they all appreciated everything he did for anyone. Herself included even if it was years later. Her smile softened at the question or rather offer. “I would love too! I’d need to bring those cookies that he loves but I’ll be there.” She’d make time for him, he reminded her of her own father in so many ways and if she could do a small thing like a visit to bring a smile to Michael’s fathers face, she’d do it in a heart beat.
“Oh god…” Jen groaned, throwing her head back a little more dramatically than originally planned, she wanted nothing more than her own bed and shower, to smell like herself again and not the generic brand soaps. “That sounds like I’ll be sleeping in my own bed soon…” Jen cut herself off, mind immediately going to her car that was probably totalled now. How was she going to get home? There was no way she could ask Michael to take her, not that he would know her new address and if her car was written off and there were no keys, how was she going to get inside? Her mind trailed off for a second before her attention was caught by his eyes staring into hers. She missed this, the warmth and familiarity in his eyes was comforting and she felt herself getting lost in them before being pulled back into the conversation. “Oh uh… no, I thought Noah told you, I got a new place a while back. It’s way too much for just me but it’s new and nice and has little to no stairs, there’s some leading up the front garden but the driveway goes straight into the garage… which I have no use for now…” she looked back down at her coca cup, how was she going to get a new car, when would she have time.
