Kitchen Island Extractor Vs Ceiling Hood
If you’re lucky enough to have a kitchen island in your new kitchen, the problem of picking the best cooker hood will rear its head.
Traditionally a hood will come down from the ceiling and stop about 750mm above your hob. Bizarrely the price of an island extractor is much higher than the equivalent wall hood. Yes, the hood needs to be finished all the way round, but the mark up seems unfair as the motor and internal parts will be the same.
Then you have the issue of the island hood limiting vision. You’ve gone to the trouble of a beautiful hob on your new island and wanted to open up the space in your new kitchen only to find that when you’re cooking on the hob, all you can see is the hood directly in front of you with the noisy motor inches from your face.
Some manufacturers offer designer hoods in cubes and spheres, but these are generally recirculating and don’t offer any kind of decent power. Sure, they look great but be careful as you’ve got a large open space you need to take this into account when picking a powerful enough island extractor.
We are a big fan of the Luxair range of ceiling hoods. They offer plenty of power and come in slimline versions now to make installation even easier in almost any kitchen.
Most homes are able to install them flush into the existing ceiling, but even if you can’t fit the body between your joists, you can install them in a dropdown box of only 10 cm
The motors of the Luxair Celux, Gealux, Delux, Anzi and Tolvi hoods will fit between your joists. The body of the hood is only 7cm, so by creating a frame on your ceiling to hold the hood (it’s a simple suspended clip system) it will drop down only 10cm. This completely removes the problem of the intrusive island hood being in the way, opening up the views in your new kitchen. Also, the motor of the hood will be boxed in the ceiling, so the noise levels dramatically improve also. We’ve seen some nice feature false ceilings as well. Some designers have mirrored the shape of the island (after all you won’t be walking under it) and incorporated some pretty edge lighting around it with the slimline ceiling hood fitted flush into the false ceiling.

Although it may require a little more planning and labour to make it work, the trade-off can be magnificent and we think worth thinking about if you were originally thinking of a standard island extractor.

How about a bath screen that goes all around your bath?
If you’re anything like us, your family will take significantly more showers than baths. If you aren’t lucky enough to have a separate shower, you’ll be taking them in the bath tub. Bath screens are great, but very often don’t protect against all the excess water and splashing that still ends up on the floor. You may be interested in the overbath sliding door shower screen we offer. Instead of just screening off a portion of the bath, it completely encloses the whole bath protecting the floors and walls from splashes and water damage. The sliding door mechanism gives a generous 68cm opening, big enough to get in and out with ease. If your bath is installed between 2 walls, you just need the main screen which installs wall to wall. The over bath screen has some clever fine adjustments so it will fit any bath installation type. (some baths have tiles over the edge so the actual size for installation will be slightly smaller than the original bath size) If you have 2 sides exposed on the bath, you simply add the side screen option, again with fine adjustments so it will fit no problem. 100 g (4 oz) Be-Ro Short Pastry 3 x 15 ml spoon (3 tbsp) raspberry jam 75 g (3 oz) margarine 75 g (3 oz) caster sugar 100 g (4 oz) ground almonds 50 g (2 oz) ground rice 1 medium egg 25 g (1 oz) flaked almonds
1 Heat oven to 190ºC, 375ºF, Gas Mark 5. Line an 18 cm (7 inch) square tin with the pastry. Spread base with raspberry jam. 2 Cream margarine and sugar. 3 Add ground almonds, ground rice and egg and mix well. 4 Spread mixture over jam and sprinkle with flaked almonds. 5 Bake for 20-25 minutes. 6 Allow to cool, then cut into fingers.
