"So, tell me Jean," Wymack said later, after Betsy had gone to bed and while Abby was off taking a shower, "what do you think your plans are going to be for the upcoming year?"

Jean shrugged. "I'll probably just go to another team."

"Any teams you have in mind?"

"Not really," Jean said, fighting against the urge to back away. "I'll probably just go wherever they'll have me."

"Yeah?" Riko said, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. "Why do you care, even?"

"Why don't you?"

"About what?"

"Yourself," Jean said, finally bringing a pause to their conversation. "Why don't you care about yourself?"

"Haven't you heard enough from everyone else, yet?" Riko said, taking a step toward Jean. "I'm not worth caring about."

"Jean! There you are!"

Jean spun around to see his grandparents barely holding back his sisters, who both had tear-reddened eyes. Camille slammed into him and practically crushed his ribs with the hug she gave him, followed shortly by Amélie, who wiped her nose on his shirt.

"Jean Pierre, you have lost the privilege of getting to explore without holding either my hand or your grandfather's," his grandmother said, her voice crackling with worry.
