Astel Leda's debut slides

We've picked up an interesting idea from our reading on shame. In the book, the author describes two reactions to covering toxic shame: being hyper-controlling about things (and the idea of trying to be "more than human") and functionally collapsing (the idea of being "less than human").

It's interesting to see which alters find best support from each other at different times. Phoebe, who spent a lot of time present, would vascillate between the two reactions, while Lyrian, rarely Active but often passively influencing, was more hypervigilant.

As they spent more time co-conscious and less guarded around each other, they were able to empathize with each other a lot more. Seeing the patterns unplay before you in a less tense setting gives a sense of truth to things you already kind of knew but weren't certain about. It really helped things click for both of them.

Phoebe could see the dysfunction happening and gently draw attention to it while Lyrian, no longer exiled, could feel the love and authenticity of Phoebe's presence and remember that he, too, could kindle those feelings in himself again. The inner cold could be warmed again, through mutual vulnerability and positive regard.

What this says for me is... I wonder if I need to find someone in-system who also feels connected to the "falling apart" reaction. I'm more of a "fuck all this *dissociates* " kind of reaction, so I tend not to be connected to the emotional aftermath, I'm coming to realize.

it is strange coming to the realization that i am who i needed to be. i am growing to be okay with thoughts that are in line with that... and i feel stability.

a particular thing i am noticing change about us is a sort of... feeling better about not being right about things. it feels so petty to type that. 😵

but the fact is this -- being knowledgeable was something this brain prioritized a really long time ago. in that way, i think it's something that all parts of us have in common. it makes sense we would probably take it personally, at one point or another.

in order to grow the empathy we feel we need in order to heal... i need to extend a healing response to that as well. my attempt... is this.

Further thinking on our last reblog, I think our preference is going to be talking about our alters in terms of lenses.

When I/we do things... it's usually the result of multiple lenses agreeing on a course of action. We are very good at dead-locking each other into inaction and we mostly get shit done by getting along.

(It is very taxing tying up our mental energy in fighting each other. We've agreed to work towards spending our energy in ways that actually make us happy -- it's more a matter of agreeing on what that looks like, now.)

We are not well. That is a fact. We have several diagnoses and you're probably noticing one of the symptoms of it. That. Sucks. 🤷‍♂️

I know that this kind of realization would have us spiral before, so, here's some of our old skills to remember.

"I am unwell" is a cognition and a judgement. Not all cognitions are absolute facts. (This sounds funny when I was validating it before. I have a reason for this, though.)

Judgements are things we can change our perspectives on. This doesnt mean that if we believe hard enough, we will simply become what we believe - that is magical thinking. (Otherwise, we would be a master programmer, author, and many other things by now. 😓)

All these two points are leading to is the realization that feeling unwell is something that can and does pass... as well as something we can do something about to help it change.

... It's just about staying calm, in the end.
