Tasting: Da Hong Pao Oolong

One of my favorite, most expensive and most prized Oolong teas. It comes from the Wuyi Mountains, in the Fujian province of China. The tea resembles long tightly knotted ropes with a very distinct color. It’s name translates to “Big Red Robe”.

The name derives from several tales. The most famous being of a scholar who was traveling to Beijing for an exam. He fell ill and was found by a monk. The monk brewed him a tea from the Wuyi Mountain which cured the scholars illness. Later he won first place in his exam and returned to thank the monk. He later cured the emperors illness with the same tea. The emperor rewarded the scholar with a red rode and told him to put the rob on the tea tree, as the red robe was considered a high honor.

The tea has a very distinct flavor and aroma. It is full bodied with a subtle sweetness with hints of orchids and a light toasty, roasted flavor. The liquor has a wonderful almost amber color and is clear and bright.

FUN FACT: During the Republic of China, the cost of 1 pound of this tea was equal to the cost of 5000 pounds of rice or 10 buffaloes.

You will take the bamboo craft down the river from the ninth bend to the last bend. The raft ride is smooth with occasional bumpy currents. In the course of the bamboo rafting, raise your head to view cliffs, dramatic peaks; lower your head to see the transparent and shallow stream, use your ears to hear the stream flowing sound. The raft tours end is Wuyi Palace.
