lmao one of my favourite things i wrote for this chapter tbh. because, though i couldn’t make it as explicitly clear in the fic, the situation is this:

you’re a middle-aged lesbian, who has watched a heartthrob of a teenage boy become one of the hottest men the four nations have ever seen over years of working with him. every single time you come back from doing his hair and dressing him for events every person you know who’s attracted to men asks you about him. you barely have to do your job bc he could roll in the mud for an hour and still be impossibly attractive. he asks you to put some makeup on his face, so you do, and it makes him even hotter, like, you worry people will actually faint upon seeing him levels of hot. to clarify: you are a lesbian. a happily married one, at that. but even you have to acknowledge that this is the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen, and you’ve put eyeliner on him. no mortal should have the power you’ve just wielded.

and then the world’s most elligible bachelor turns to you afterwards like ‘wow i think i might be attractive?’ and you have to try not to scream

it’s not. Really a reference to anything but sokka mentions that zuko prepared them a picnic with iroh’s special ‘Koibito’ blend tea, & koibito is, as far as my research was able to find, the anglicised japanese for ‘sweethearts/new love’ bc iroh Knows

also not a reference but as a native spanish speaker myself i try to put spanish into literally every fic i write, so lucky for me atla decided to call the fire nation capital caldera (spanish for a boiler or cauldron) so i took that and ran with it & named the markets hoguera (sp for bonfire) and ascua (sp for ember)

“Katara, finished with his very minor flesh wound” is a monty python ref. obvs

also not a ref but the bit about sokka’s “fool’s gambit” was my personal way of justifying iroh referring to zuko and sokka as ‘the prince and the fool’ bc the fool?? excuse me iroh?? you tryna catch these hands??? but now and forever in my head it’s iroh’s fond nickname for sokka bc of the crazy cool pai sho move sokka invented and subsequently used to absolutely fucking wreck iroh at a white lotus meeting one time. no further comments

"He's in love with the Avatar???" is easily the funniest line I've ever read in a fanfiction. ((Spoilers)) Also Ima is goals, her making tea for a lovestruck hopeless Sokka AND the fact that her wife is very much alive and well?? Gods I want an entire spin off on her life

okay sorry the concept that something was a spoiler for my fic. as in people might not want to be spoiled for my fic. threw me for a good fuckin long while but Moving Past That

im really happy people love the little ima and shiori interlude!!! bc at one point when chapter 3 was still one chapter (instead of the chapters 3 and 4 it became) and getting long, i considered cutting it because it really. doesn’t have any plot significance whatsoever other than making sokka consider doing something he doesn’t end up doing lmao

but i loved the idea of them so much and i loved writing them so much i left it in, and i’m so glad i did lol. btw their shop is Absolutely the fire nation equivalent of Gay’s The Word (for my non-uk followers it’s in london & the oldest lgbt bookstore in the uk) aka that’s what i had in mind when i wrote about it

so idk i just loved the idea of sokka accidentally stumbling into The Gay Bookstore mid-disaster-bi-crisis and then there’s ima who does this shit every day of the week and twice on sunday

re: ima, btw, people might not have noticed but most of the story she tells is just a blatant reworking of what sokka literally just told her about zuko. like she specifically included details based on sokka’s story for maximum effect. she has giving scary reality check pep talks to baby gays down to a science. it’s what she Does. and shiori, long suffering, usually stays in the back of the shop, listening to this week’s Way She Died Tragically and hoping her wife doesn’t make anyone cry today

I actually cried when Sokka went into the book store damn. What a good story I really enjoyed it!!!

fun fact! that was one of the first scenes i wrote (the end scene was the actual first) because there are few better things in life than having your life sternly but lovingly meddled with by an older, wise, mischievous lesbian. and in a bookshop?? just letting sokka live my dream life nbd

additional fun fact! ima telling sokka to just tell zuko he loves him without expectation was inspired by an ep of xena: warrior princess!

there’s this moment (i wish i could find it but sadly the internet is disappointing) where xena tells joxer to just tell gabrielle he loves her without expecting anything back, because that’s what love is. it’s not expectation, it’s just truth. i’m paraphrasing but i watched that when i was little and it stuck with me for the rest of my life lol

I was just rereading WTWT, and I think an Eito point of view would have been hilarious. Also, a Katara POV scene would have been gold. Seeing how Sokka misinterprets their actions is so funny.

okay a) whenever i get around to finishing the gotdamn epilogue, i can promise there is an eito pov (promise as in. i already wrote it fkjsdk)

b) i hadn't even considered writing a katara pov sfkjdk i imagine it'd be like. 80% exasperation and the other 20% is just 'i literally don't care what's going on sort your shit out and leave me alone' until she realises what's Actually going on and it becomes the funniest thing that's ever happened to her.

maybe ill write an extra bonus deleted scene of zuko asking for katara's blessing - running to find sokka - realising sokka doesn't know they're dating from katara's pov. who knows
