the blonde’s breathless words could barely be heard over the madding crowd, people clinking glasses and dancing, smoke rising high into the new york city night, as city ellis grabbed ahold of her hand ( bottle of moonshine still in the other ) and set off full-pelt across the rooftop, cecilia barely able to keep pace with the friend she had come to rely on more and more over the past two weeks. they were friendly before, and fond of each other’s company, but city’s forthright way of solving problems seemed to be the only way to drag cecilia free from the quagmire of guilt she’d been sinking into that night; every time stevie’s saddened eyes caught her own and they were forced to confront the enormity of what she had done, it began again, and city — sighing heavily, usually punctuated with a damnit cecilia — came to pull her away.

but she hadn’t seen stevie, hadn’t seen the way the other girl looked at the star-speckled golden dress city had chosen over snapchat. after all, that was what ‘kind-of-dates’ did, right? so the sudden intervention was a complete surprise to the literary mystery, whose heart pounded at triple-time, “what— city!”

he’d fucked up the night before; zar knew that as soon as he woke up with a hangover and a blonde head laying on his chest. he pressed his lips together, holding back curses, trying to figure out how he’d get out from under city. she was an alright person, really, it was just... he hated that he kept making these mistakes. slowly, carefully, he lifted her off of himself, trying to slide out from under the covers, but, inevitably, she stirred, “hey,” he mutters, sure to keep a low volume as his head still pounded. “just going to make breakfast.”

Leo stepped into the elevator of the building, pressing the button for the 24th floor before setting his bags down at his feet. It had been a terribly long flight from Rome; even someone who wasn’t afraid of flying as Leo was would’ve agreed. Doors opening onto the 24th floor, Leo began to walk the halls, reading the numbers on the doors as he did. The hallway was rather quiet for a Sunday afternoon, but he was glad he hadn’t run into anyone- he wasn’t really in the mood for small talk. In fact, the only thing he was in the mood for was a nap and some food- there was absolutely no way in hell he was going to eat the repulsive lump of what they called pasta primavera that was offered to him on the plane. His feet stopped in front of the door marked 2415, dropping his bags on the floor once again as he knocked on it twice. In the short time between his ‘decision’ to move to NYC and the day of his flight, Leo did not have much time to shop around for a flat. He settled on Ten23 as he thought it seemed decent enough, but with no vacant apartments available, he had no choice but to move in with a roommate. He hadn’t gotten to speak with them much, besides letting them know what time he’d be arriving for them to let him in and give him a key to the place. Leo waited on the other side of the closed door, reaching down to lift his bags up as he heard the doorknob turn.

ezra’s relationship with city had been...well, somewhat of a shit show. things had started hot and heavy between them, and had stayed that way for months, which felt like years to ezra. anyone who knew them could tell you that they weren’t good for one another, both encouraging and enabling the other to continue with behavior that wasn’t helping either of them. despite that, when city left, with absolutely no warning, it crushed ezra. it took a month for him to realize she really wasn’t coming back to him, only to new york, and that things between them were over for good. he’d jumped into a ‘relationship’ with scout to get through it, and though that had turned into something wonderful, it didn’t stop him from hurting over how things had ended with city. he’d never really been angry with an ex until now, causing him to throw the cold shoulder her way whenever she was around. this moment was no different. ezra’s eyes fell on her for just a second as she stepped into the elevator, focusing straight ahead once the doors closed. he was perfectly content ignoring her, all until the elevator suddenly came to a halt. he tripped into her as it stopped, catching both of them at the last second, “what the fuck?”

once upon a time, zar had learned to pick locks at one of his shit boarding schools. one that had been built in the nineteenth century and hadn’t been updated since. and now, here he was again, picking the lock to the lighthouse under the cover of night. to be fair, this had been city’s idea, but he’d agreed to it. they could share the blame, he supposed. thankfully, this lighthouse was ancient, and zar managed to pop the lock after only a few minutes. “well,” he said as the door opened, “thank god my bad boy days came in handy eventually.”

Leo said goodnight to the guys as their little get together by the outdoor bar died down, the alcohol in his blood quickly turning into a downer as he stumbled through the lobby of the resort. He had absolutely no idea what time it was, but the loud ringing in his ears told him it was time to sleep. When he reached the door of his hotel room, he began searching his pockets for the room key. “Cazzo di merda,” he cursed, patting down his shorts trying to search for it. Realizing that the key card was long gone, he rested his forehead on the door and laughed to himself at the irony- this was exactly what City had warned him about on his first day, but roles reversed. His head still resting on the door in hopes it would stop the room from spinning, he knocked on it quietly (or so he thought), hoping City was in there.
