What the WtA Index is, and what it can do for you!
So alright. What on earth is this Index? What's it going to be any good for? Let's find out!
Legacy WtA is big. It stretches thirty years, four editions, and my list of pertinent sources for the game (not even complete yet!) numbers over 200. Newer books are easily searched if you have a PDF, but older ones not so much - especially if the subject you're looking for is referred to in oblique ways that don't provide a handy key search term. And even with the newer PDFs, you gotta know to even check in the first place!
So I've been trawling through the books, keeping page numbers about subjects as they arise. As an example, here's the current entry for "Ahroun", an admittedly very simple subject with frequent mentions:
Holy moly! Of course, they're not all that huge. You get entries with only one source, or cute little ones like this:
For anyone working on a W:tA project, the benefits should be pretty clear. Finding obscure references will be considerably easier. That's my goal - to offer a powerful resource to talented creators for the (very flawed) game that I love so dearly.
Now, the index is far from ready for release. I have many more books to process, and a lot of choices to make about how to organize entries, what terms to file certain things under, and formatting. So while I'll offer these glimpses behind the scenes as to what the index looks like, I don't release the files - yet. Someday!
So what good is it doing you in the meantime? Well, I won't let you go rummaging through the index yourself just yet, but I'll happily rummage through it for you, making reference pulls for a given subject. Here's an example of references to Wales that I made for someone. Currently not a lot there in the books I've indexed (I imagine this'll get a lot longer once I hit Tribebook: Fianna Revised!) but it's easy to update as I go. If there's a subject you're looking for references to, feel free to let me know in an ask or message here on tumblr and I'll get to it when I'm between books!
Also, because I have been ordered to do this, and because of the capitalist hellscape, here's my tip jar. Note that tips are neither required nor expected for doing reference pulls, just appreciated!

Australian Open: Sofia Kenin thanks dad after maiden Grand Slam title
Media playback is not supported on this device
Highlights: Kenin beats Muguruza to win Australian Open
2020 Australian Open Venue:Melbourne ParkDates:20 January to 2 February Coverage:Listen on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and online; Live text on selected matches on the BBC Sport website and app; Watch highlights on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
When Sofia Kenin was closing in on her maiden Grand Slam title, her dad could barely watch.
Alex Kenin’s face was contorted with tension and then covered with his hands as he hunched forward nervously on his seat.
This was the moment they had dreamed of ever since she picked up a racquet aged five and became a child prodigy who hit with the stars.
When Kenin’s 4-6 6-2 6-2 win over Garbine Muguruza in the Australian Open final was complete, the 21-year-old American raced around the net to the opposite corner of the court to tenderly grasp the hand of her father, who is also her coach.
She says they both asked each other what had just happened.
Two hours or so later, with the Daphne Akhurst trophy on the table and a glass of Champagne in her hand, she had a simple message to the man who gave her the “American dream”.
“Just thank you to him. We can share this forever,” said Kenin.
Alex, a quiet Russian who moved to New York in 1987, responded by using his two index fingers to draw a smile on his face.
“He saw I had talent and we said ‘let’s just go for it and do this professionally for my life’,” said Kenin, who will rise to seventh in the world when the rankings are updated on Monday.
“He knows what he is talking about and comes up with the right plans and the right strategies. He just knows it.
“He did it by learning the whole experience. He is crazy smart.”
Sofia Kenin (left) and father Alexander, who made many sacrifices in order to help his daughter’s career
What makes Kenin’s rise remarkable is the fact her dad has guided her all the way there as a self-taught coach with little background in the sport.
Alex drove one of New York City’s iconic yellow cabs before becoming a computer consultant, then took over as her coach when his daughter’s career became more serious.
He played tennis “just for fun” in his younger days back home in Moscow and Crimea but says he did not play “well”.
It was apparent his daughter, who Alex and wife Svetlana took to be born back in Russia before returning to Manhattan shortly afterwards, was a special talent.
She quickly became a star in the States, featuring on television programmes and the covers of magazines which labelled her as a future Grand Slam champion.
Famously, aged seven, she claimed she would be able to return a serve from hard-hitting American star Andy Roddick, then practised with the likes of Grand Slam champions John McEnroe, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
The WTA posted a video this week of four-time Grand Slam singles champion Clijsters giving a tour to a then six-year-old Kenin, with the Belgian saying “who knows, she might be one of the new big stars”.
Quickly she rose through the junior ranks, with two-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka even saying recently that Kenin “killed it” during those years.
The constant by her side has been her dad, who says he was never tempted to hire a ‘professional’ coach.
“She was always number one at 12, 14, 16, 18. So why change a good thing?” said Alex, who thanked journalists for their “attention” after he spoke to them.
His daughter has become the youngest Australian Open champion since Maria Sharapova in 2008 and the eighth woman to become a first-time Grand Slam winner in the past 12 events.
As with Japanese 22-year-old Osaka and 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu before her, she has become the latest young star to leave the world wondering if she can go on to dominate the game.
Throw American 15-year-old Coco Gauff, who Kenin impressively beat in the last 16 in Melbourne, into the mix and the future of the women’s game looks bright.
“I saw what Naomi and Bianca achieved and I really wanted to achieve that,” said Kenin, whose given name is Sofia but is known by its diminutive Sonya – the name of Alex’s mother – at home.
“It gave me a big boost, big motivation.
“My dad was telling me: ‘It is great for them and you can really achieve this too’.
“I’ve seen women’s tennis is changing. We can all play each other on any given day and there can be a lot of damage happening.”
Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion, can testify as to the damage Kenin can cause.
The American’s relentless returning, ability to execute under pressure and an insatiable will-to-win ground down the Spaniard, who led by a set before being mentally and physically worn down in Saturday’s final in Melbourne.
Kenin swung the match her way with a monumental hold from 3-2 40-0 down in the third set.
Two backhands down the line under the most intense of pressure were outrageous, a third winner – this time down the other flank – almost ridiculous.
An ace out wide and a crosscourt forehand winner – after drawing Muguruza into the net – clinched the hold. It also virtually clinched the championship.
Muguruza crumbled from that point, producing three double faults – including one on match point – in what proved to be the final game.
“I knew I needed to come up with the five best shots of my life. I mean, let’s go!” laughed Kenin, who plans to spend some of her £2.1m winnings in luxury jewellery stores in Melbourne.
Growing up in the affluent Manhattan neighbourhood of Upper East Side, she says she is a “typical blonde girl” from that area.
“I’m into all those fancy stores,” said Kenin, who has almost doubled her previous career winnings of £2.9m.
“I like to have that luxurious life. I’ve worked so hard for it. it’s super exciting and I get to do what I want.”
That she is able to do that is down to father Alex and mother Svetlana, who was back home in Florida with Kenin’s grandma, sister and dogs.
Kenin said her mum cannot watch her matches because she gets too nervous.
“I called her right after the match just to tell her that everything’s fine, I won, she can just relax now,” said Kenin, who mouthed “Oh my God! Look at all these people” when she walked into a packed media room.
“I told her I’m not going to be able to talk to you for hours, but at least you know that I won.
“I’m coming home, you can give me the biggest hug of your life.”
Although the rest of the Kenin family could see exactly what was happening on Rod Laver Arena through the television pictures, Alex melted the hearts of more than a few people who watched him film his daughter’s maiden Grand Slam acceptance speech on his mobile phone.
Afterwards, sitting alone in a quiet media area and going through countless messages on the same device, he had a confession to make.
“It didn’t go too well, I didn’t press record properly,” he laughed.
It was probably the only mistake he has made this fortnight.

W:tA Reference Pulls, 2023/09/16
I've only done one reference pull since last time, but it was a doozy! For @songoftrillium I put together what is, by far, my most ambitious reference pull to date: Mages, Magic and WTA. Every reference to mages and magic (true or hedge) that I could find in WTA books. It's nearly 120 pages of citations, and it's not even entirely complete. While I am fairly confident about having nabbed everything of worth from the books I have indexed, I also pulled everything I could find from books I've yet to thoroughly index, so stray mentions got missed there. Even so, I'd say this is a fairly strong view of mages and magic from the perspective of the Garou and Fera and will be updated as I go forward.
Working on that took some hours, so unfortunately my "In the Pipeline" list from last time remains unchanged. I will get to these, in time!
Completed & Ready for Enjoyment: Central America in WTA; Mages, Magic & WTA; Scotland in WTA; Werewolves of England
In the Pipeline: The Caribbean in WTA, Garou Professionals & Academics, Jewish People & Judaism in WTA, Silver Fangs in US Politics, Wales in WTA

WIMBLEDON, England — Slowed by a balky ankle, trailing by a service break in the third set of her Wimbledon quarterfinal, Serena Williams appeared to be in trouble Tuesday against an opponent playing the tournament of her life.
Williams was down, yes. But out? No way. And now she is two victories from that 24th Grand Slam title that’s been barely eluding her.
Lifting her play a much-needed notch down the stretch to grab the last three games, capping the comeback with her 19th ace — at 121 mph, no less — Williams reached the semifinals at the All England Club by gutting out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over 55th-ranked Alison Riske.
“I had to just button up and play hard,” said Williams, who owns seven Wimbledon titles. “She was playing her heart out.”
That she was. Riske, a 29-year-old from Pittsburgh, was appearing in her first major quarterfinal. For Williams, this was No. 51.
That might have made all the difference. It’s Williams who possesses boundless muscle memory in these situations, who knows what it takes to come through in the tightest contests on the biggest stages.
“I definitely thought maybe I had a peek here and there at a couple openings, but Serena really upped her level, as only a champion would,” Riske said.
“It was really, actually, very interesting for me to be on the opposite end, because I felt her up her game and her intensity,” Riske said with a smile. “Yeah, I hope she takes the title now.”
Next for the 37-year-old Williams will be a match against 54th-ranked Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, who reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at age 33 with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over No. 19 Johanna Konta of Britain.
“A huge achievement for me,” said Strycova, who is playing in her 53rd major tournament.
The other semifinal Thursday will be No. 7 Simona Halep of Romania against No. 8 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
After edging Riske in singles, Williams cooled down by riding a stationary bike while holding her nearly 2-year-old daughter, Olympia, in one arm. Then Williams went out and joined Andy Murray to win their second-round match in mixed doubles 7-5, 6-3 against Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo.
Halep, a former No. 1 who won the 2018 French Open, followed up her elimination of 15-year-old sensation Coco Gauff by defeating Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (4), 6-1 to get to her second semifinal at Wimbledon. Svitolina will make her debut in that round at any major tournament thanks to beating Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-4.
These sorts of stakes, and this sort of setting, are unfamiliar for Riske, who mistakenly headed to her changeover chair thinking the match’s fifth game was over when the score was just 40-15.
Spectators chortled; she grinned and walked back to the baseline.
Even if Williams was hardly perfect, she got by, aided by her greatest-in-the-game serve and Riske’s miscues. Most glaringly, Riske double-faulted five times in the final set, at least somewhat a result of trying to do too much against William’s superb returns.
“It’s no secret that Serena has an amazing serve. But Serena has an equally-as-amazing return,” Riske said. “I’ve never played anyone that has a return like Serena. That put a lot of pressure on my serve.”
Still, Riske played tremendously well for most of the afternoon, just as she did while going 14-1 on grass in 2019 until Tuesday.
She won two of Williams’ first four service games and finished 5 for 5 on break points. Her deep and flat groundstrokes off both sides jarred Williams repeatedly. Until, that is, Riske wilted late — which was understandable, given that she became the first woman in Wimbledon history to play three-setters in five consecutive matches to open the tournament, according to the WTA.
Williams rolled her right ankle and her movement was hardly ideal. Late in the second set, she was visited by a trainer, who applied extra tape to the ankle. That was during a stretch when Riske, talking to herself between points, claimed four games in a row to take the second set and lead the third by a break at 1-0.
“I thought,” Riske said, “I was very close.”
Not close enough. Williams was not going to go quietly. She held at love to lead 4-3, and then came the key game. Riske saved a trio of break points and was a point from 4-all after claiming a point when Williams slipped along the well-worn baseline.
First Williams got back to deuce by using a drop shot to set up a volley winner. Then she earned yet another break point on a thrilling 10-stroke exchange, using a drop shot to bring Riske forward and delivering a volley winner. Williams lifted both arms and jutted her jaw. In the stands, her husband leaped from his seat, pointed his index fingers at her and screamed.
On the next point, Riske double-faulted, handing over the last break Williams needed.
After breaking Steffi Graf’s record for most Grand Slam trophies in the professional era by winning her 23rd at the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant, Williams took time off. Since returning to the tour last season, she came close to equaling Margaret Court’s Slam count of 24 — which was accumulated in part against amateurs — but lost in the finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
Williams dealt with injuries and illness this year, playing just 12 matches until last week.
“This is the first time since (January) that I actually felt, like, good,” she said at her news conference, while Olympia was held by Williams’ agent at the back of the room. “It’s been a really, really long year for me already, and hard year.”
That’s true. Also true: She’s Serena Williams.
And so here she is, back in Wimbledon’s semifinals for the 12th time.
“She’s something,” Riske said, “our sport has never seen before.”

Australian Open organizers working toward stand on coaching rule
MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australian Open organizers are working to determine whether coaching will be allowed during the Grand Slam tournament in an effort to end the controversy that led to Serena Williams’ outburst over a code violation during the U.S. Open final.

Williams was given the violation when chair umpire Carlos Ramos saw her coach Patrick Mouratoglou make a hand gesture to tell her to play closer to the net against Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
She was then docked a point after she later smashed her racquet and then penalized a game for calling Ramos a “thief”.
Coaching while the players are on court is not permitted in Grand Slam tournaments, although the WTA Tour allows it in other events at specified times. It is prohibited in all men’s matches.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said at the time that he would urge tennis officials to affirm its position on coaching during matches and said on Tuesday that they were working with the governing bodies to clarify the rules.
“We’re getting the global governing bodies – the ATP, WTA and ITF – and the grand slams together to talk about our approach to coaching,” Tiley told reporters at an event for next year’s opening Grand Slam at Melbourne Park.
“I think it’s really important that it’s consistent so fans and players don’t get confused on it so hopefully in the coming weeks we are able to make an announcement on our position.”
Tiley added that Australian Open organizers had asked the now retired Casey Dellacqua and John Millman to lead a players’ review of the rules. More than 100 players were interviewed as part of the review.
“We’ve had a team out there interviewing them and the players too want some consistency on coaching and we’d like to be able to lead the way on that,” he said.
Tiley added that total prize money for the 2019 tournament would be increased by 10 percent, taking the total pool to A$60.5 million ($42.81 million). It was A$55 million for the last edition.
The tournament’s heat policy, which involves a calculation based on humidity and temperature and can be confusing to understand, was also being reviewed.
The U.S. Open was blighted by heat issues this year, although the design of the court might also have contributed to the stifling conditions on the main Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“We have an extreme heat policy and we’re working toward an extreme heat index which will be a little different,” Tiley said.
“The research we’ve had has been sport in general and we’ve just completed some research specifically for tennis so that’s going to be concluded in the coming weeks and it will be easier to understand.”

NEW YORK | Red hot: Players face brutal conditions at steamy US Open
NEW YORK — Players scrambled for relief from the heat and some retired from their matches when they couldn’t find it at an overheated second day of the U.S. Open.
Novak Djokovic said he felt sick during a changeover in his match on a day when conditions were so difficult because of the heat that U.S. Open officials extended to men an extreme heat rule that only exists on the women’s tour.
“Very brutal,” said 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic, who won his match when his opponent, Marius Copil, retired.
The WTA rule allows women to leave the court for 10 minutes between the second and third sets, and on Tuesday men were allowed to take similar breaks between the third and fourth sets.
Even that wasn’t enough on a day when a heat advisory in New York went into effect at 11 a.m., the same time play began, and was to remain until 9 p.m. Wednesday, with temperatures in the mid-90s and heat index values in excess of 100 degrees (38 Celsius).
“Ten minutes? I would have needed an hour and a half,” said Leonardo Mayer, an Argentine who retired in the fourth set and said men’s players need to stop playing five-set matches in Grand Slams.
Four players quit playing during their matches, and the ones who won quickly while covering their necks with ice towels during breaks considered themselves lucky.
“I really tried hard not to play the third one in this kind of heat,” women’s No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova said.
Other women’s winners included No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, who ousted 2011 champ Sam Stosur, and No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko.
The No. 6-seeded Djokovic headed to a fourth set with Marton Ducsovics after the players took a break following the third. It was the Serbian’s first U.S. Open match since losing the 2016 final to Stan Wawrinka.
Djokovic could face a quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 seed Roger Federer, the five-time champion who meets Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in a night match.
