Simplicity just wasn’t going to cut it this year. Last year, Bun-Bun had gotten marked down for going too simplistic in the dress up round, so she was determined to go all out this time around. Convair, of course, was naturally enthusiastic about being made up to be as glitzy and eye-catching as possible.
Cheren, for his part, was just happy that he’d convinced Bun-Bun to ditch the ice theme from last year. They’d done wonderfully with it, but it was just... so cold. A fiery masquerade theme was much more his speed.
And so he’d painstakingly worked with Convair to get him fitted with elaborate fake golden feathers to hide his real tail, making him up to look more like the phoenix rising from the flames he was meant to represent. The paint and glitter used to mask his natural color scheme would have been easier to apply if the Unfezant had been able to stop compulsively preening himself throughout the process.
Bun-Bun was, of course, the flames themselves. She was as enthusiastic a model as ever, excitedly twirling around backstage as she practiced the best way to show off the dress’s golden edging, trying to mimic the spurting and flickering of real flames. And then, of course, she’d helped to make sure Cheren’s own costume didn’t embarrass her.
Cheren preferred this costume to last year’s, if only because it was his favorite color. And because he got to hold a sword. It was plastic, but it still made him feel impressive nonetheless. He hated that Bun-Bun made him pull his hair back, but judging by her unrelenting chittering, he understood that she thought his normally shaggy hairdo made him look “like a hobo”. And so he’d gone with her advice. This was, as always, more her show than his.

Yuugetsu was almost a little too eager to show this one off. After all, this outfit was special. She put extra-special care into it when she made it, as per usual, but this one was purely winter-themed, the song having no influence on her design choices. She wanted to capture the coldest of moments, the snow and the stars in the longest of nights. One could hear the clear, cold clink of jewelry as her light, careful steps with her heels just millimeters off the ground softly echoed in the hallway.
One might feel the ghost of a chill when they laid eyes upon the outfit, but was it real, or was it just imagination?

@wintersolsticefestival hey here’s the junebug and her long mouse, all dressed up!
And there stood June, last but hopefully not least, with her Furret standing proudly next to her at full height. All six feet, not counting the tail fluff. What a long girl. Every now and then, she switched positions, climbing up June and curling around her shoulders like a cuddly scarf. Maybe she was playing up the cute factor too much, but the Furret chose to think of it as an “artistic liberty.” She wanted her first contest to be a hit!
Poppy wore a short red scarf with flower details stitched onto the ends, along with a cute red bow behind her left ear. It seems June combed a touch of glitter through the Furret’s lustrous coat as well, just for a little extra pizzazz. In fact, Poppy had insisted on it– all the recorded appeals June had shown her throughout their journey through Johto seemed to feature glitter as a common thread, even a badge of honor. The Furret couldn’t be more excited for her contest debut, so naturally she wanted to continue the sparkly tradition!
Meanwhile, June had dressed in a more traditional rendition of Red Riding Hood– a relatively simple white dress complete with petticoat and lace edging, and of course a red hood. It was more of a capelet, really, hitting at her waist, and the hood had faux fur trim in the same light beige as Poppy’s fur. To top it all off, she wore boots the same dark brown as her Furret’s stripes, and two matching red bows adorning each of her low pigtails.
Together, the pair of them looked like a couple of Little Red Riding Hoods, ready for a winter walk through the woods.

Zoey made some final adjustments to Kaiju’s costume and stepped out to be judged. The Dunsparce, who had been delightedly showing off his costume to every person who stepped into his line of sight, wriggled excitedly. Her own fidgeting had less to do with anticipation and a lot more to do with anxiety. She put on a brave face anyway, doing her best to affect cool stoicism. She didn’t want to let Kaiju down, though if she was being honest, he probably wouldn’t recognize if he won or not. In his own mind, he was a champ already.
After seemingly endless phone debates with her coworker Benji, she had settled on the obvious: make Kaiju into a kaiju. He wore a prosthetic cobra-like hood, painted with faux eyes that she hoped were slightly more intimidating than his real ones. She had painstakingly attached spines in a line from his snout to the middle of his back, often repeating the process as he squirmed to look at her work. To hide his decidedly not-tough little wings, she had pasted a series of wing-like spikes over them. The spikes bristled up when he lay flat on his belly, reminiscent of a Tyranitar.
She had also buckled a heavy leather collar around his neck and a smaller one around his tail, both studded with metal rivets. From the one about his neck hung the remains of a chain, an attempt to hint he had once been contained but had broken free. With force. She couldn’t do much about his pastel coloring without painting his whole body, so she’d left it alone, hoping the spikes and spines would be intimidating enough. The dirt smeared on him in patches was real; she’d taken advantage of his foray into a potted plant in the lobby.
For herself she had chosen the character of the misguided-scientist-turned-makeshift-soldier. She wore her work boots, already well-worn and muddy. Her khakis were torn and hastily repaired in places, as was her shirt. The shirt was half-untucked to give an air of hasty disarray, and the lab coat she wore was similarly disheveled. A burn in the coat hinted at one of the dangers hidden within her Pokemon partner. Her fingerless gloves had metal guards riveted to the knuckles, some small protection donned in her hasty career shift. She carried a length of chain that matched the remains dangling from Kaiju’s collar, a symbol of her duty to contain that which she had inadvertently set free.
As if to cement his vision of toughness, Kaiju struck his best scary pose, lifting his body up and opening his mouth in a hiss to show off his fangs.

Shiori stood in between her pokemon with a knee length dark blue dress. It had a sweetheart neckline lined with white rhinestones. There is a transparent light blue, sparkling fabric cascading down the back and past the end of her skirt and down by her ankles. On her head was a circlet of constellations, followed by sections of her hair that were pulled back and into a ponytail flowing down the back of the rest of her hair. She finished the look with dark blue heels and dangling star earrings.
To her left hovered Ran, her Masqurain. Her outfit was the simplest out of the three as they had to be careful not to get in the way of her wings. She wore a dark blue piece of fabric. It was longer than what a ribbon or collar would be, but only slightly so it cleared her wing space. The ribbon was made out of the sparkling light blue fabric from before, and the short bow tails waved from the force of her wings fluttering. It had tiny rhinestones on the top, imitating her trainer’s dress. Hiding the zipper in the back of it was a sparkling light blue bow with short tails. A circlet of stars rested around the point on her head.
To her right was Lia, the Kirlia, grinning excitedly, almost mischievously at the judge. She too, had a dark blue top, ending where her natural ‘skirt’. This one was large enough to have the sweetheart neckline, it also had rhinestones on the top. A star circlet adorned her head as well, steering clear of her red feelers. On each wrist was a light blue frill, much like the ones on Shiori’s gloves. On her feet were dark blue shoes that seemed to be padded on the bottom and toe for some reason.

@evening-laced-moon
“Velvet’s outfit reminds me of something-- Not too much, of course, and there may just be only so many ways to dress up a Buneary in winter clothes.” He wouldn’t call that a deduction, but it didn’t add any points, either. “I’m especially interested in her ballerina shoes and that matching headdress. That’s gained you a few points. Very beautiful.
“And your Ninetales-- This variant looks perfect for the theme you’ve tried to create. Her winter booties are so adorable and her accessories are very nice-- And, of course, a coordinator dressing to match doesn’t hurt.”
“Miss Wheeler, Velvet and Aurichal, your point total comes to 430 out of 500. I’d rather call the Pokémon cute than elegant, but it’s still decently beautiful.”

[dress up for @wintersolsticefestival! Added dabble bc uh. struggle noises]
Due to a lack of materials, Eria quickly compromised her black and brown outfit which was supposed to be original but, realized that she would be considered hogging the stage of her Lopunny, Ashes. She grabbed a shirt with a light purple sleeves and collar, before proceeding to put on the brown hat.
She doubled check for her lopunny’s outfit. Ashes’ outfit fitted prefect as if, her kicks couldn’t even tear the material apart which were made out of flexible material, and adjusted to the bunny’s size. Eria adjusted Ashe’s’ black and red hat, her ribbon to make sure its not too tight, and finally her glasses.
Their turn was coming up. Eria took a deep breathe before proceeding to walk the stage with their lopunny. She hoped for the best. She walked out to the stage, with her lopunny first and showing off proudly of their new outfits - handcrafted by her hands, and hope for the best.

WINTER SOLSTICE 2017 DRESSUP
There the two of them floated, both Duskull and Misdreavus, painstakingly painted (with Pokemon-safe paint, of course) in minute detail: like tiny clouds. Cumulonimbus to be precise, although these were the type that appeared during the heart of a fierce winter storm: dark and dense on the bottom, only tiny patches of light dotting their upper bodies. The Duskull was the more intense cloud, a thicker coat of paint to hide any and all seams. Misdreavus was the fluffier one, the one that told a lie as to whether the inclement weather was truly over or not. His paint was a thinner but no less dark blending of blues, greys, whites, and even some purples. Both of them had spots of glitter throughout, pasted via safe stage adhesive in patterns to resemble ice crystals in various stages of formation: some solid, some melting, some half formed, all towards the bottom, where the precipitation would have been the densest on a natural cloud. The Ghosts type’s natural propensity toward translucence, coupled with the way the lighting just happened to be set up by default in the arena, made the paint job look even wispier and fluffy.
As for Narcissa...She’d taken plain white marshmallow coat and snow pants and mirrored their own paint job, but with a twist - she was the lightest of the clouds, mostly white, the fluffiest with her shadows and highlights, and the final note in the blizzard. Even her face was airbrushed via costume makeup to be the top edge of the sky - together with the hat - that worked it’s way down her body to end in a clear rainbow sunset at her boots.
