been going back and forth a lot on how to say this bit. i'm not looking to unsubstantiated assertions here. but like. everyone understands that "what if batman and superman were fucking" in 1997 was maybe not an epic leftist takedown of homophobia, right

#time for the rambly bit. to some extent ig theres a question of authorial intent when it comes to ellis [standard warren ellis disclaimer]#but i dont think “did he intend this as a joke” is a line of questioning that's particularly useful when subsequent creative teams were #much more comfortable using homosexuality as a punchline. sure im side-eyeing the bert and earnie joke to whatever extent is reasonable but #im more concerned with...everything else? AND PERHAPS I SHOULD NOT BE PERHAPS I SHOULD BE HARDER ON '99 WE ARE DOING PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL #NONSENSE HERE!!! its not “female coding” its a purposeful subversion of masculinity. because according to [take your pick] they're not “rea #men."
