Post Prompt Challenge of the day! Rewrite a classic scene. Can you guess which book I've butchered? “My heart has been hibernating for seven years. Now that I am far enough removed I can try to remember why I chose to close myself off.  It’s been long enough that finally I can look back on the memories of him fondly, the shards of heartbreak only now trace gently against my soul. “For seven years I couldn’t think about him too much because there was a debilitating sadness that would consume me if I let myself feel anything for that man, if I let myself even for the briefest moments reminisce upon our time together, and I didn’t want to lose any more time to that void. I’m already so far behind on my life goals because of what I gave up to be wholly devoted to him. And for what? I still haven’t finished sewing the new curtains for the lounge. I still haven’t been to Canada. I still haven’t enrolled back at college. What I have done is sleep with so many other men that quite possibly I have finally washed away the flesh memory of his sweet touch from my being. At least, I hope I have.”  #authorschallenge2019 #rewriteaclassic #writingopportunity #promptchallenge #writingcommunity #thegirldiaries https://www.instagram.com/p/B1FaVQBAOPJ/?igshid=xsqs9ikejs2l

I’m just trying to go somewhere with this craft of mine. I really want to write, do poetry and perform spoken word. Even in music videos. Maybe write songs for artists too. Collaborate and have fun doing what I love alongside people that love what they do too. I just want to make art and create beauty. 😪😪
I’m trying to create opportunities for myself as I don’t think I’ve got so many before me right now. Do I even take myself seriously to start with?
😣
I feel very untapped. I've got wells upon wells of beautiful art sitting inside of me. Clogged. Unexpressed. Unexplored.

The Abandon House
Short Story submitted to the writerbloc competition.
https: //thewritersbloc.net /writingopportunities/2242
Short Story By Andrew Cheffers
Background
The year was 1970 and in Glenolden, a small town South of Philadelphia, was a boy, standing and waiting for the school bus. The boy's name was Jack. Jack's family had moved into the neighbourhood two months ago from Australia. Jack was 14 and in the 8th grade. Jack had an older brother Jamie (15), a younger sister Jessie (11) and a younger brother Sandy (6).
The Abandon House
It was a cold morning in late October. Jack jumped up and down trying to keep warm and he was relieved when the yellow school bus was in sight. He thought it was really cool how the school buses here in America were yellow and that they were heated. Jack got on to the school bus and saw his new friend Greg, and went sit with him.
Even though Jack was the new kid on the block, making friends was easy, especially since all the kids liked his strange accent. Most kids thought his accent was English, so they associated him of being English and when Jack told them that his accent was not English but Australian, they answered 'Oh, Australia is that somewhere near England' Jack would roll his eyes and say 'Never mind!'
Greg was fascinated by Jack’s accent, it didn’t sound southern or anything he had ever heard. He turned to Jack and asked him in his strong Philadelphian accent ‘Hey buddy, what’s you wearing tomorrow night?' and Jack gave him a confused look. Greg continued 'you know, Halloween! Don’t you know Halloween?' Jack hesitated to answer, he tried to remain cool and uttered ‘Naah, Mate!’ Greg laughed 'Geez, you Australians are dumb, Halloween is really cool, man! You dress up as a weirdo and go around to people houses and ask for candy.’ Jack was intrigued, so he responded, ‘what, really?' So Greg went on to tell him about what he wore last year. ‘Really! Jack reacted ‘Elvis Presley?’ Greg smiled and added Yeah Dude, it was a real hit.’ Jack liked the pun and laughed. The bus stopped at the school and they all got off. Greg said I’ve got to go, seeya!' Jack was curious and interested in Halloween. 'Collecting lollies, yummy!' He had an idea of what to wear.
When school finished, Jack caught the school bus home with Greg. As always, they both sat together at the back. Jack asked with a nod pretending to be cool ‘So tomorrow night, what’s the deal? Greg said 'Well, you know Brad? he and I usually knock on Logan, Boon and Stuart streets, you get the most candy from those streets.' ‘Cool!' Jack said, ‘I’m up for that, I'll meet you at your place just before dark’ and they both smiled.
When Jack got home from school, he had an idea of what to wear. He asked his sister Jessie to help him with his costume. Jessie loves to dress up and she has a knack for design and colour coordination. She was the right person to ask, but he was afraid she would decline since he teased her a lot. Jack knew that Jessie was a bit naive at times and took his word seriously. Her reaction was one of jubilation. ‘Wow! I love dressing up’ she said as she danced around the room. When he told her of his idea of a costume. she laughed and said 'Ok that might be a little hard, but I'll see what I can do.' Then she asked if she could come along and Jack replied that he was going with Greg and Brad and that she would be better off going with Jamie and their little brother Sandy. Halloween sounded fun, so she decided to make a costume for Jamie and Sandy. Sandy’s leg was in a cast from falling down the bunk bed last week, so she thought she would dress him as a Mummy. Jamie was a little bit more difficult, although he decided what he wanted. Then she had to come up with something for herself. She had only one thing in mind. That night, she scrounged around looking for costume garments. By the end, she had it all under control ready for tomorrow.
Jessie, Jamie and Sandy were excited as they started their journey down the street. Sandy felt restraint using the crutches dressed as a Mummy. The wrapping of the Mummy fabric around his legs and the cast that goes up to his crotch area made it a struggle. However, he was sold straight away, once Jessie mentioned that lollies were the prize.  Jessie was dressed as Shirley Temple. She was always enthralled by the black and white TV series. It was America by the way and she would fit the part. She managed to curl her hair and wear a white frilly dress. The black shoes with the pull up socks made her appearance look real. Jamie walked along side her wearing a cowboy hat. He had seen the movie 'The Alamo' who starred John Wayne and he fell in love with John Wayne movies. He once heard John Wayne say 'When in Rome' he was curious of what it meant so he asked his mother. She told him, 'Where you are is what you’ve become.’ He thought about that for a while and decided he wanted to be Cowboy.
When they came to the first house, Jessie hesitantly rang the doorbell. The door opened and a lady stood there and waited. Jamie and Jessie looked at her, and then at each other. 'Well', insisted the lady. 'Aren't you going to say Trick or Treat?' Jessie was shy and whispered 'Trick or Treat?' The lady smiled and presented a plate of apples. Jamie looked down at the plate with disappointment and muttered 'Apples?' Jack had mentioned, that they would be presented with a bag of lollies. ‘Ah well’ Jamie thought and thanked her as they walk back to the street. At the next house, Jamie decided to ring the bell. They waited for a bit. Since it was still daylight out, it appeared that nobody was home. Jamie pushed the doorbell again and nobody came to the door. It felt a bit awkward since they were told that there would be a lot of kids around with costumes and they didn't see any kids on this street. Jessie was wondering whether this was another one of Jack's pranks. They would go to the next house and see.
It wasn't very far to the next house. Sandy was finding it hard with the crutches, so they took their time. When they got to the front path, they looked up at an old Victorian house. It appeared to be nobody home. The grass was taller than Sandy and the front porch had sagging floorboards as though nobody had done any maintenance for years. There were no cars in the driveway and the front screen door was wide open to expose the front door full of cobwebs. When Jessie reached the porch, she was hesitant to step up. The house fascinated Jamie because it presented multiple conical roofs. The roof over the porch had a steep pitched slope rising to a peak. The corner of the house had a turret structure that looked as though a rocket was going to blast off from the side of the house. The porch was surround by a wrought iron railing and when you went up the wooden stairs they clunked and creaked. Jamie trotted pass Jessie up the steps and quickly rang the doorbell. He couldn't hear the bell, so he knocked on the door. By this time, Sandy had managed to get up to the final step with Jessie helping him from behind. There was a sound of faint footsteps coming from the other-side of the door. The footsteps went quiet. Jessie was getting the creeps and turned towards the street, her thoughts were of running back home. She turned to Sandy and was reminded of his disability. His predicament didn't allow for a quick getaway. She decided to be brave and wait. Finally, they could hear the front door lock unlatching. 'Click clack' the door was released and slowly opened. A hand could be seen around the doors edge pulling the door open, it was gnarled like the limbs of an old oak tree. The opened door exposed a small old lady still in her white frilly nightie, she had long black hair, which covered parts of her face, her eyes were wide open searching from side to side and her skin was tight with anxiety. Sandy found this amusing and blurted out 'Trick or Treat!’ Both Jamie and Jessie were shaken by the outburst, looked over at Sandy and eyed him to be quiet. The lady slowly waved her hand as though she was beckoning them to come inside. She said no words just silently insisting. Jessie wasn't entertained by the idea but before she knew it, Sandy was at the doorway. Jessie looked over at Jamie. Jamie gave her that 'I don't know shrug' and went to follow Sandy. Jessie felt a shiver, worried for her young brother, entered the house as well.
**
Jack waited until dark before going to Greg's place. Greg had mentioned that the best time to trick or treat was after dark. Before that, it was for little kids. It took Jack over 20 minutes to walk to Greg's place, it would normally take ten but the costume he was wearing wasn't design for walking. Jessie had come up with a real beauty of an outfit, however, it broke down in the practical part. He had partly taken it off, so he could walk the distance and when he got to Greg's front porch, he put it back on. He rang the doorbell when he was ready.
Greg's mother had opened the door and she had a bowl of candy in her hand. She extended her arm, out the door, with the bowl and said 'There you go.' Jack just stood there and waited for a reaction. He was half expecting Greg's mother to be spooked and shriek by saying 'What is this!' But it didn't go like that at all. She just handed over the bowl and offered the lollies. Jack hadn't been shown the ropes on what goes on with Halloween, so he didn't know what to do. Finally, he confessed that he was here to see Greg. Greg's mum looked up and Jack took off the mask for a second. 'Oh, Jack, well well,... GREG!' She yelled 'Jack's here to see you'. Greg could be heard behind running down the stairs and he poked his head around the door. ‘Aah Man! what are you?, he queried, a giant rat or something.' Jack was confused because he wasn't a giant rat. He proclaimed 'No, I'm a Kangaroo!’ this intrigued Greg. ‘Dude, a what?' Greg's mum interjected' don’t you know what a Kangaroo is? It's an Australian marsupial animal' 'Ah, an Australian what? Greg cackled. 'Never mind let’s go'. Greg passed his mum and came out to the porch. He was wearing black pants and a black shirt. Jack asked ‘What’s this?' Greg was carrying a mask and put it over his face. The red mask looked like a devil with fanged teeth and a burnt singed forehead. 'I'm the devil' he announced. Jack was amused 'Cool' he approved. Greg mentioned that they had to meet up with Brad at the corner at any minute, so they went off.
When they got to the corner, Brad was waiting for them holding a guitar. Brad had on a fake bushy beard and wearing a large brown buttoned up overcoat. Jack had admired the costume and asked Brad what he was supposed to be. Brad responded with opening up his overcoat revealing his body dressed in beige pants and a shirt. There seemed to be a long stuffed sock hanging from his midriff. 'I'm Jim Morrison on stage', Brad announced. He had seen on the news recently that Jim Morrison, the singer from the Doors, had been arrested for a gig he did in Florida when he exposed himself on stage. Both Greg and Jack had seen the footage and laughed. Brad turned to Jack and asked 'What are you suppose to be, a rat or something?' Greg added 'Yeah, a giant rat'. Jack was getting impatience with his costume, not only because it was hard to get around in, but also it looked stupid. He wanted to take it off and leave it on the street. He responded by saying that he was trying to be a Kangaroo. Brad laughed 'Oh, those bouncy animals that you see on Wild Kingdom, Cool! Man, I love that show.' Jack was relieved and took it as a sign of acceptance, so he decided to keep wearing it.
**
The entry was dark; the house studs were exposed showing the hallway had been recently on fire. Every step they took, the floor creaked, as though the house was playing an eerie song. Sandy could just hear noises in the background, more like somebody was playing the drums in the other room. At the end of the hallway was an archway. Flickering light could be seen through the opening. The lady was walking backwards still beckoning them to come. His eyes were focused on the light as he walked with his crutches. It was tiring so he was hoping that he could sit down soon. When Sandy reached the entrance to the room, it opened up into a large lounge room. The flames in the fireplace projected a calming atmosphere. In the centre of the room, there was a large three-seater couch facing the fire and a slate covered coffee table in between. The old lady indicated for them to sit down on the couch. Sandy was relieved, so it didn't take much convincing. Jamie was looking around the room, so he sat down on the couch as though he was following the leader.
Jamie was intrigued on the layout. He noticed an old style clock hanging over the fireplace. The hour hand was positioned on Roman numeral five; the minute hand on three and the second hand was stationary. It read quarter past five. Jamie remembered the time because it was the time in which the Washington to Boston train passes by. It's a large train and is very loud. Jamie reckon that the time must be at least 6pm. So, the clock must have stopped recently.
Jessie stayed at the archway. She didn't want to enter the room and kept anxiously looking back down the hallway towards the front door. On the coffee table, there was a large bowl. The old lady pointed towards the bowl. Jamie reached over and picked it up and looked inside. Sandy leaned over and peeked into the inners. Jessie although behind them could just make out Sandy's reaction on his face. His eyelids opened up wide and he had a smile from ear to ear. It was as though he had scored the jackpot. He reached in and grabbed a bunch of lollies. She could just make out the labels on the packets. They looked like candy cigarettes, candy necklaces, Lemmonheads and even Redhots. Sandy continued to grab and stash the lollies into his bag. Jamie was doing the same.
Jessie was weary and stayed at the door. Once they had emptied the bowl, the old lady slowly walked over to the fireplace and picked up a stoking iron. Jessie became alarmed and quietly ran over to the couch and signalled for them to leave. Jamie concurred and stood up off the couch. Sandy's lolly bag was full and too heavy for him to carry. Jessie grabbed it and helped him up. The old lady had her back to them and was busy stoking the fire. Jessie saw an opportunity and caroused both Jamie and Sandy back to the hallway. Jessie looked back to see the old lady still poking at the fire as she walked out the archway. She seemed to be unaware of their sudden exit.
Sandy was in the lead thumping down the hallway with his crutches. He pushed the front door open with his right crutch. It swung open wide and they all stumbled through the doorway and down the stairs and onto the path. The door sprung back shut with a BANG! They all jumped from the sudden sound and looked back as though there was a dog nipping at their heals. It was dark outside now, so it was hard to see the pathway to the street.
When they got to the street, they looked back and saw no one chasing them. The house seemed to be invisible from the darkness and appeared vacant. Jessie proclaimed 'That place gave me the creeps.' Jamie became aware of what she meant and agreed 'me too.' Satisfied with their takings, they headed back home.
When they were nearly at their driveway, they met up with Jack, Greg and Brad coming the other way. Jack asked Jamie 'How did you guys go?' Jessie replied 'Halloween gives me the creeps' 'Why' Greg asked 'Well', she responded 'we've just come from the craziest house, it had steeples on the roof' Brad said 'Oh, you mean the abandon house.’. Jessie continued 'Not really, there was this weird old lady who invited us in and sat us down in this strange room.' 'Really?' said Brad 'That house has been abandon for years, nobody lives there.' Jessie and Jamie both look at each other and responded in chorus 'REALLY?'
The End
