House of Hunger: Bland characters, a story that barely scratches the surface of the implications of its premise, and a central relationship with nothing underpinning it make for an aimless story with a climax that hits like a limp noodle. If the dynamic between a vampire and her indentured maid appeals to you, try The Wicked and the Willing instead.

An Education in Malice: For a Carmilla retelling, the titular character really lacks bite. Laura at least has some interesting contradictions in her, and De Lafontaine could be quite compelling if we saw things through her eyes, but the central relationship isn't built on a lot, and Carmilla herself is really disappointingly bland. The prose comes off as overwrought and melodramatic in the first act, and the constant leaning on poetry feels gratuitous, but it picks up steam and becomes appropriately gripping by the one-third mark, and it carries the book enough that I had an enjoyable but rather shallow experience. I struggle to think of a reason to recommend this over In the Roses of Pieria, which plays with similar thematic and aesthetic elements much more adeptly. Also, it's a pet peeve of mine when a story makes a point to establish a specific historical era for its setting but has characters that feel utterly modern.

The Deathless Girls: This book does a much better job with its sense of time and place, and the characters and their motivations are quite strong. I only rate this one low on this list because the main characters don't actually deal with vampirism as a condition until the very end of the book. On its surface, the premise might seem quite similar to A Dowry of Blood, but there's actually very little thematic or narrative overlap.

Ex-Wives of Dracula: An excellent exploration of the queer teenage experience in conservative small town ~2015 USA along with some pretty novel twists on vampire and horror movie tropes. Strong, vibrant characters with a rich, messy, and compelling relationship carry a solid mystery plot and some pretty pointed critiques of its setting, but the actual climax and resolution don't quite hold up to the quality of the rest. Also I simply must warn anyone who didn't grow up in the time and place this book explores about the profound and casual bigotry and nastiness of that setting, which this book replicates to a T.

The Wicked and the Willing: A thrilling and compelling dark romantic drama centered on a British vampire in 1920s Singapore, her newly hired and desperate to escape poverty personal maid, and her majordomo who is struggling to keep her conscience under control after years of aiding and abetting her mistress's dark appetites. Extremely strong character writing pairs with deft exploration of themes of colonialism, entitlement, class divisions, sexism, and the ways in which certain types of status can and cannot afford one leeway to be nonconforming in other ways. Intermixes diagetic and non-diagetic BDSM very organically also, if that's your thing.

In the Roses of Pieria: Rich prose dripping with atmosphere follows an obscure academic as she digs into a series of ancient correspondences and discovers a millenia spanning love story between two vampires. The character writing is solid, if not quite as impressive as some other entries on this list, but the quality of the prose more than elevates it. The text makes elegant and powerful references to Sappho throughout, and the whole experience is heady and compelling in ways that I struggle to describe in greater detail. Funnily enough, the vampires are the least interesting part of the world building. This one has a sequel coming, and I can't wait.

A Dowry of Blood: A darkly enchanting epistolary novel that takes the form of letters written by the first of Dracula's wives to him as she attempts to make peace with killing him. She unpicks a delicious and horrifying knot of feeling and history as she revisits their millenia together, recounting and reckoning with the manipulations and abuses that defined the good times and the bad. The characters are evocative and rich, the narrative voice by turns sparse, longing, furious, contemplative, and mournful, and the story simply springs to life. It accomplishes an incredible amount in approximately 200 pages, and I absolutely cannot recommend this one enough.

Academies were a way to introduce the business world into the education system. Everything needs to be measured, weighed, there's endless paperwork, and most Academies suffer from "initiative-itis" (introducing a new initiative every five minutes to show evidence of innovation and progress against targets) and "throw money at it that we definitely don't really have". Like paying for "consultants" to come in and give "guidance". Really it's just their mates looking for a few grand.

They're riddled with career climbers (people who want an office with their name on the door) and then you have fuckin' Trust CEOs. There's a CEO of a multi-academy trust in my county who earns £310,000 a year. Our Prime Minister earns £164,000. I know I'm basically now a Commie when it comes to the British political spectrum, but to earn twice as much as our prime minister in a glorified civil servant role... It's obscene. (I actually took over this man's Politics class eleven years ago when he was a Principal. He was a dog shit teacher and the kids knew nothing.) This is at a time when teachers wages were actually falling due to inflation.

It's a corrupt as fuck system. Schools don't need CEOs, they don't need businessmen, they don't need piles and piles of pointless paperwork and accountability measures. They need decent bloody teachers... but Academies have driven them all away. Devaluing and defunding education is part of the fascist playbook though.

april 4 1834 - henry joins hms gannet, but somehow, gets disrated four times in four years. so he's going from foretop captain -> gunner crew -> coxswain -> able seaman. later on in the arctic, while writing his career account, henry claims that he "joined tom ship gannett" while running out of space on the page, which isn't quite accurate bc henry was aboard gannet first and then tom arrived, but russell potter and i both think this may just be a reference to the fact that their friendship started around this time. and he literally has brain scurvies :( he can misremember a little bit its fine i trust him.

may 7 1834 - thomas joins hms gannet (gunroom steward) and signs an X (still illiterate) for his allotment to be sent home to cecelia.

christmas thru NYE 1834 -> 1835 -

!!!!! RPF SPECULATION ALERT!!!!!!! but in the wallet henry mentions a party that happened in "the old sitty of cumanar" i.e. cumana venezuela. this is the only point in his entire career where he's spending time in cumana. he crashes a beach christmas party which is hosted by some american girls, one of whom is quite hauty and reminds him of queen caroline (who got very publicly divorced in westminster in the 1820s and he probably remembered well from his childhood). another fragment from the wallet mentions "the party wot happened at trinadad" which is the next nearest port, and again, this is the only time in his career where henry would have logistically been able to stop and visit and party at this port. its literally the holidays who fucking careesssss. Another page from the wallet mentions "[...] trinadad laying in asham bay" and is likely also in reference to this period of his life. so anyways i think this is when he and tom started having an affair & part of why henry was getting disrated so often is part of his 'punishment' for getting caught screwing around with thomas.

february 1838 - henry gets discharged from hms gannet and joins hms temeraire as an AB seaman. his service and conduct is "indifferent". he probably loses this job bc temeraire (despite an impressive record of never dying at sea or in battles) gets ordered to be broken up. here's a beautiful painting by jmw turner FROM 1838!!! OF THE SHIP!!! so this is what it looked like when henry was there :)

1838 - henry briefly joins hms ocean to reclimb the rank back up to captain of the fo'c'sle.

february 11 1839 ~ october 14 1839 - thomas joins hms cleopatra as gunroom steward. his character is noted as good.

november 22 1839 ~ may 6 1839 - thomas joins hms fantome as captain's steward, and then works as ship's cook from may 7 1842 ~ december 31 1842, and then commander's steward from jan 1 1843 - october 20 1843. his character is noted as "very bad" (!!!!!!!) while aboard fantome.

december 2 1839 - hms wanderer heads for the west coast of africa to work in anti-slavery patrols along the west coast of africa. there's a looooooot of british colonial powergrab nuance here which you can look into on your own time. i don't want to speculate about how henry felt during all of this so i shall simply say: #yfip

august 1842 - wanderer sails for india and then china and sees some heavy action in the first opium war. george hodgson and william gibson are also aboard wanderer at this time #bestievibesonly there's malay pirates and chinese sailors trying to kill these british fuckos and everyone gets incredibly fucked up and a lot of people almost die (not henry tho. he gets a promotion and is officially captain of the foretop again. his character is very good). another great instance of #yfip can someone please get the callout post drafted already

june 27 1844 - henry gets discharged in england from wanderer. he spent a few months on shore FINALLY and i hope he got to see his family a little bit at least but it seems like he was most likely busy trying to purchase a pub in westminster so he could retire from being used and abused by the imperial navy war machine, and then ran out of money. he's a real one for sure.

july 8 1844 ~ april 25 1845 - thomas working as gunroom steward aboard hms dee. his character is noted as good.

march 11 1845 - henry signs onto hms terror as foretop captain under captain FRANCIS RAWDOG MOIRA CROZIER. henry leaves no allotment so he was keeping his paycheck for himself.

april 29 1845 - thomas joins hms terror as the gunroom steward he DOES leave an allotment so his paycheck is getting sent home to cecilia and he still signs off on this with an X (still illiterate). i can't even begin to imagine how fucking crazy it must have felt for them to see each other on the deck of terror for the first time and realize they've got the next several years stuck together on the same ship in the arctic. l m a o.

winter 1845 ~ 1846 - the expedition overwinters at beechey island. jorrington and jartnell and liam die and get buried. jarts and liam were erebus' problem, but it's very very very likely that thomas was helping out peddie and mcdonald on terror and acting as an in-situ nurse/assistant while torrington was sick and dying. i like to think maybe henry had some useful advice for tom from his time as a shipboy on a hospital ship (magnificent). rpf is fine. henry begins writing his backwards ass diary somewhere around here.

april 21 1847 - henry writes the open c poem

september 1847 - henry writes down another page and to be so real with u i can't tell if it's poetry or if it's a journal due to a big ass hole in the center of the page. but he wrote it! and the top is dated september __ 1847

april 20 1848 (probs) henry writes a coded diary page about what's going on aboard terror / officers are promising the men new boots (likely their normal seaboots with nails stuck thru to act as cleats on the ice) before they all abandon ship and begin walking / how he thinks tom has left clothes out that wont thaw in time / someone who looks like a marine is getting bossy

1848 ~ EARLYYYYY 1850 I'M NOT GIVING THEM MUCH MORE TIME TO LIVE THAN THAT TBH - henry continues to write poetry about sailing on open water, and writing backwards diary entries , and archiving his recollections of his time in warmer climates when he was young and handsome and attending parties with fruit where people were singing and dancing. there are several references to tom in his journals, most notably is a tangent thought in the middle of a sentence abt smth else where henry refers to him as 'all my art tom'. henry notoriously has difficulties with knowing where Hs actually go in words, and he likely meant "all my heart tom". at some point he is so concerned about the potential of being lost and forgotten in the arctic that he wrote down an account of his own career and he keeps it in his wallet next to his navy ID papers. at some point henry dies, probably from lead poisoning / scurvy / the cold / etc. it was awful to live thru and we know this. thomas survives him, and carries henry's wallet as the surviving men continue trekking south under crozier's command. i imagine initially it was a "i'll make sure this gets home for you" sort of thing based on their history together, and then turned into "oh god i'm not getting out of here either, time to bet everything i have on keeping his writing safe for when someone finds our dead remains in the future"

1850(ish i think) - thomas leaves terror camp in just his steward's uniform, with a clothes brush, a folding hair comb, a six pence coin, a half sovereign coin, no shoes (?), and henry's wallet containing his poetry (safely wrapped in newspaper and leather and tucked against his chest) and walks to the south shoreline of king william island. he probably admires the ocean for one last time, presuming it wasn't frozen over, and then lays down on top of the wallet, facedown, and dies.

march 3 1854 - all franklin expedition personnel are declared dead. his arrears are given to next of kin (i can't figure out if they're sent to his older sister elizabeth or his mother sarah)

may 25 1859 - francis mcclintock (my fucking enemy. me in hell like WHERE IS MCCLINTOCK.) is searching king william island at the behest of jane franklin for clues about WHAT THE FUCK HAS HAPPENED. he comes across thomas' skeleton, disarticulated but still face down along a ridge peninsula known as gladman's point. these are the only human remains within a 30 mile stretch from the last sign of terror camp at washington bay. mcclintock takes henry's wallet and the comb/brush/some surviving buttons/tom's neckerchief with him back to england but leaves thomas' skeleton behind. here's an engraving of mcclintock finding tom + a stenograph of the artifacts they took from him (left hand side, you can see the clothes brush getting moved btwn shots). the folding hair comb initially had brown hairs still caught in the teeth, but the hairs have since disappeared </3 but thomas and henry both were listed on official paperwork as having brown hair. make of this what you will.

july 20 1973 - the 1st battalion royal canadian regiment is doublechecking mcclintock's notes and refind the skeleton. they take photos of thomas' bones in situ and also after they'd been arranged on a piece of plywood. they decide somehow the partial skeleton was a guy that was 6 ft tall which is generous but technically in line with thomas' height considering he wasn't fully there and there's some room for error. they find some cloth covered buttons, a pearl button, and some scraps of wool coat. they then shipped his bones to the canadian museum of history in ottawa. allegedly the museum received the bones. they make a cairn tho + put up a plaque on the spot though

2025 - actual historians start helping me out with sourcing legible copies of the papers inside the wallet so i can do the facsimile. i continue blogging like an insane man trying 2 spread the good word about these dead dudes. and you're up to date now congrats

End of October Update

There's got to be a less clunky way for me to title these things but maybe I'll figure it out after a few posts.

Anyway at the top of the order I want to say that uh... the Abacelsus zine is not happening by halloween unforch.. I just started school part-time and it being part-time is still kicking my ass! So tentative release date will be on 11th November unless something else happens....

On the plus side I'm done with the cover so all that's left is the back page and cramming all 24 pages full of drawings 👍

I'm still deciding on whether i want to print it A5 or B5 but I'm leaning towards A5, though for the digital release it doesn't really matter lol

As mentioned, I'm done with the main cover so I just need to fill this entire thing with stuff, I said 24 pages but really the total page count is 30. I'm just not counting the cover and the blurb stuff.

I'm half taking a break with this at the risk of burning myself out and half paralysed with starting it. Plus I've kind of been more into Axl & I-no hilariously but I'll always love A.B.A. I think the lack of any real info really lends her well to interpretation which is always fun.

I've never really been one to engage in fandom so I'm probably going to be doing my own thing. That being said if anyone has any suggestions feel free to drop them in my strawpage or ask box :)

Sigh, like I mentioned earlier I'm doing school again! At my big age, but I'm having fun so far! It's part-time but it's still kicking my fucking ass! It's the main reason why I'm a little disoriented this month honestly.

Do you like it? I spent an entire Sunday making my class miro board look niceys and then proceeded to get nauseous from cybersickness afterwards LOL

I'm doing a UI/UX course and I have to say the funnest part about it is making personas, it's like making OCs. Don't particularly like writing though.. but also that's a lie considering the numerous amount of paragraphs in this blog post alone haha

I've also gotten confirmation that I'll be boothing again next year in Febuary! So I gotta start locking into making more stickers and general merch. I say this a lot but I do need to look into opening an online store because I just have tonnes of stickers and stuff lying around waiting till the next time I do a convention which is kind of a shame.

All in all, been kind of busy this month with school and various loose threads from September but overall I think I'm doing better! I've also been cooking lately and truthfully that's my biggest achievement this month haha, been also getting really into canned fish. Yummy!

Oh and a last thing is that I've been itching to animate again so I'll end this post with a WIP of a gif I did last night/morning. I almost always never finish my animations but here's hoping this one actually makes it to the colouring stage haha

Tineee (1989) by Fiona Woon and Kevin Gomez, Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI), School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Singapore. Tineee was the winner of the IEE UK Micromouse competition in 1989. "With only 18 months of preparatory work, the team of Mr Kevin Gomez and Miss Fiona Woon designed and took their computer-controlled robot to London, which ran through the maze to beat the defending champion" – NTU School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

"Mr Gomez and his coursemate Fiona Woon, both 26, from the Nanyang Technological Institute, built an electronic robot, called a micromouse, for the annual "rat race" in London, on July 13. The mouse ... beat the defending champion and hot favourite Mitee Mouse III from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) by 1.79 seconds. The competition involves racing a computer-controlled robot through a maze to its centre. The duo were ecstactic when they found that they had won. But both said the race was a nerve-wracking experience. Miss Woon said: "I turned my eyes away from the race - I did not dare look because something could easily go wrong. When we won, my first reaction was just relief." Mr Gomez said: "When we knew we had won, my legs felt like water. I was more nervous during the race, because so much depended on our mouse - but it would have been an achievement even if we had taken second place." The duo won £150 (S$470) and a book entitled Robotics and Control. To celebrate the hard-won victory, Mr Gomez said he went to sleep. "The victory gave me peace of mind and as we had not had any proper sleep for three days running, I was really feeling exhausted," he said. Day #11 4/15/25

We woke up early enough so that I could do push ups with Ryan back home!! I love doing it— we FaceTime and then he can share a song and we do our push ups together, today I was able to do 28 and I think Ryan got to 35! I’m glad we’ve been able to keep doing it most mornings though on the days we’re flying it’s hard to find the right time.😭

We ate breakfast at the hotel and went for a nice walk all around the Opera house then headed back to check out and catch a train back to the airport.

We made it to the First class lounge where we met Marta. She was an older woman- maybe late 60’s early 70s not sure- she seemed to want to talk so I asked her where she was from and she said Vienna so I told her we were going to Vienna as our last stop. And then she just kept wanting to talk she ended up turning her chair-with Jesse’s help- to join our little table and we talked about Sydney and travel and things to do in Vienna and she told us about her son who’s married and lives in Germany and we talked the whole like 2 hours til our flight and she was on our flight back to Singapore she was headed to Tokyo for a cruise around Japan. We walked to the fat with her and she said - oh Jesse we’re not standing in line so she got us in the front where we boarded right away- her suite was right across from mine!😃

Singapore Airlines Suites amazing!! Our suites were incredible!! So much room and an actual small mattress that they pull out.

And they really spoiled us. More champagne than I could drink and wine and caviar and then soo much food! I was so full by the end, I didn’t think I’d want to eat for three days. And the staff was so sweet. They took pictures for us and Serene, one our staff members, taught me what to do with the caviar, toppings, and bread thing.

Even though we had beds, I wasn’t really all that tired because it was only about 3:00pm. I climbed into the bed and got comfy though in the pjs the airline gave us.

I watched Wicked while trying to write one a post but my internet kept not saving any of what I wrote. 🤣🤣🤪

Before landing the crew surprised us with an extra celebratory triple chocolate tart with flashing lights and two extra glasses of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. I would definitely LOVE to fly Singapore Suites again. We loved the staff so much, we asked if they would take a picture with us and they very happily did!

After about 8 hours of flight time, we made it to Singapore and thanked the crew profusely and gave Marta a hug goodbye at the Singapore desk so she could find her next flight. Then we were off to the Crowne plaza in the Singapore airport and went to sleep.

This was the most memorable and special flight we’ve ever taken. Thank you Singapore Airlines!!❤️❤️

here're some other (lol) hilarious, DIY psyops from just a few months ago! to answer some questions, the reason i know SOME Chinese and Japanese is b/c of my background being a Filipino growing partially in Singapore! there were Chinese there and I picked some up, but not much.

later on for no reason i took Japanese language and culture classes one summer. i dont remember the year but it was whenever jurassic park 3 came out. they obv taught some Japanese language theory, but there was a Chinese class as well (if you remember my past writings, there're some Chinese characters in Japanese!)

much later on, when i decided to study anime, i tried to listen and pick up as much Japanese as I could. it wasn't much lmao! i started by picking out words that're also in Tagalog and Ilocano, which i know more of, and went from there.
