Wrestlemania Main Event Reviews - Wrestlemania XXXVIII (Saturday)
Steve Austin def. Kevin Owens in a No Holds Barred Match in 13:55
This one starts with The KO Show with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. The crowd are super hot for Austin without him even arriving and Owens is super hated. He’s been mocking Texas and Austin a lot in the lead-up. I won’t give you a full run-down of this segment because this is about matches, but it's classic “Your town sucks” heel work. Austin enters to a huge pop. He then leaves. He then returns with his ATV! They argue about Texas. Owens reveals he actually wants to fight Austin and he accepts. The noise is insane!Â
Giant pop for the bell! They meet in the middle of the ring before throwing punches! Austin gets on top in the corner and starts to stomp a mudhole in Owens and walk it dry! Big whip into the corner and big bump by Owens. Austin calls for a beer for a mid-match swig! Once again, Austin stomps Owens in the corner. He sends Owens out of the ring and grabs another beer! Owens sends him into the barricade but he returns with a clothesline. He drops Owens onto the barricade and rakes the eyes. “You still got it” chants as Austin stays on top, but then Owens reverses an Austin throw to send him into the ring post. He attacks him with the tripod from the KO Show set, then grabs a table. He goes to send Austin through it but Austin reverses this time and Owens goes through the table. He sends him to the crowd, and they brawl amongst the Texans! Austin goes for a suplex but Owens counters with his own on the concrete! That’s a pretty wild bump for Austin! Austin starts to fight back as they head back ringside, but Owens has the upper hand. This changes when Owens begins to climb over the barricade and gets flung onto the announce table by Austin. He grabs two beers, takes a drink and hits some punches on Owens on top of the table. He grabs another, spitting it in the face of Owens. The action returns to the ring, but Owens rolls to the apron and is able to drop him on the top rope. He heads out and tries to take the ATV but Austin meets him and attacks. He hops on the ATV and drives them up to the stage! How sweet! Big suplex on stage left from Austin this time! He then heads to stage right, and hits a crafty eye poke on Owens before another suplex. Austin walks him back to the ramp and sends him careening down it! Back into the ring for Owens, and Austin grabs another pair of beers. He chugs them as only he can (spilling most of them that is) but Owens hits a stunner! Austin kicks out though to the crowd’s delight! Owens goes and grabs a chair, but Austin dodges and the chair rebounds off the ropes into Owens’ face! Love that spot always. Austin follows up with a Stone Cold Stunner and that's all she wrote!Â
He calls for his beers and celebrates the classic Austin way! That's with more beer if you were unclear. He enjoys them with the crowd, hits another Stunner on Owens (who is escorted out by the police), and tells the crowd that that's the bottom line cos Stone Cold said so! He invites Byron Saxton in for a beer, they drink, then he stunners Saxton! I love it, Saxton is great. Austin then even brings his brother into the ring to share a moment.
Pros: Electric crowd, feel good vibe, surprisingly strong action Cons: Very simple structure, spot-to-spot format, uneven offence but that’s what was needed
This is no technical classic, but it's just downright fun. Being in this moment, it probably feels like an all-timer, and while that isn't the case you can't help but love this on some level. Austin put in a great shift given his age and condition, and Owens was a great dance partner. The crowd were hot and it was just simple fun. Not too much to say but a good time none the less.Â
