Doctor Who: Victory of the Daleks

I rewatched this story on 25 July 2023.

We begin in London’s Cabinet War Rooms in the midst of the 1939-1945 world war.

This is the third Doctor Who story that mucks about in that history directly, but the conflict between totalitarianism and democratic liberalism casts a long dark shadow across the series as a whole. Nazi-style eugenics first features in Dr Who’s second serial, which introduced the Daleks as a “perfect” race intent on full extermination of everything else. It’s an interesting idea to meld the Daleks - the ultimate fascistic monster in Doctor Who’s phalanx - into the allied side of the most recent European experience of total war. It raises similar questions as those raised in The Beast Below about British (human?) arrogance…

And then we get the silly toy Daleks that don’t really last… thankfully. And groan about the white Dalek being supreme. Not exactly subtle, but it’s amazing how many people don’t get it…

The Spitfires in space hark back to Star Wars, which modelled its X-wing versus TIE fighter fights on the dog fights over Europe during the early 1940s. Viewed that way, it’s all quite fun... but the losses of war aren't entirely ignored. Oh, and Bracewell loses his hand, too, a bit like a certain Jedi Knight father/son combo…

#*this also applies to the not-ladies among us #y'all deserve a good pensive ramble across a moor in a really cool greatcoat #just be sure you don't turn it into anything vigorous #this is not the time to be Aragorn we are looking for Jonathan Harker pre-Dracula at best #in regards to the moor: a wind-swept cliffside would also be suffice #it would NOT do wonders for my health of course but hey #fortunately the bestie and I have plans to go hiking next weekend and if we don't have another option I'm gonna beg for the hemlock trail #I'd also take the cedar springs #I just need Nature that isn't the beach #in other news I am happy to report that the week is smoothing itself out somewhat #we're all still on edge but it's not as bad as it was and we've effectively kicked loose the pebble in the the shoe #my darling sister sent me a gift and told me to treat myself so I may get bubble tea after work #and I begged for tomorrow off so I can sleep and then spend the day coughing in peace #(this is such a bizarre cold. I didn't get any of the preliminaries outside of some sneezing)#(and then it was straight to my chest. not even a sore throat first! usually I get a lot of build up and can often get ahead of a bad cough #(thankfully my nose is not congested. Buttercups and Golden Flowers

#i drew this mostly because i noticed that a lot of people mistake buttercups and golden flowers as being the same thing.#so i wanted to try drawing them like. distinctly different in the same image.#it's not a big thing but i do think the fact that they're different has some significance. or at least like. symbolic meaning.#my art #undertale #chara #chara dreemurr #safeutdr #something about the fact that they both look similar at least in color but one of them is poisonous.#the way golden flowers are clearly a positive symbol throughout the game and clearly heavily associated with Chara.#contrasted with the very negative connotations buttercups have. with asgore getting sick and chara using them in their plan.#you never see buttercups in the game. which makes it even easier to mistake the two. because we've only seen one kind of #golden/yellow flower. who's to say 'golden flowers' aren't just referring to buttercups? well.#why would there be golden flower tea if they were poisonous? why would chara want to see the golden flowers from their village if they're #the same kind of flower? they clearly have buttercups in the underground.#it feels almost intentional the way golden flowers are so easily mistaken for buttercups. or at least that the difference is so subtle.#it goes well with the way they're associated so strongly with chara who's also a very subtle yet important part of the narrative.#from a surface-level perspective the flowers that took their life and the one's they actually like/are important to them are the same thing #but when you pay closer attention to the narrative you can see the different symbolic meanings.#well. uhh I've thought about it too much don't mind me.#see i think about it from the perspective of chara being super adamant about them being two different flowers #and frustrated when anybody gets it wrong. because clearly. CLEARLY they're not the same.#'STOP confusing buttercups and golden flowers. i literally used buttercups to kill myself do you think i would still like them after that?'#'do you think i want to be associated with them? they're not the same!!'#<number one golden flower enjoyer number one buttercup hater.#i need a badge that says 'i have strong opinions about chara dreemurr because i kin them. i apologize for the wall of text' at this rate.

So much I could say about these three #and so much I could say about their relationship / interactions with Cucurucho and Osito Bimbo #Cards on the table... I really would have loved it if Cucurucho / Osito genuinely cared about Jaiden #I mean I know they DID care about her to some extent that much is clear #But they / the Federation were also ABSOLUTELY using her. I'm not arguing that they weren't #But how could anyone not be charmed by Jaiden? The boba the tea parties the head pats–#The empathy and kindness and everything that made q!Jaiden who she was–#Cucurucho and Osito were tools of the Federation but I do want to believe they cared about Jaiden. Albeit in their own fricked up way #I dunno. I know this sounds like massive copium probably but I watched all of her and Roier's streams interacting with them #and I personally think that conflict and duality makes for a more interesting story #But that's just me and my own personal biases. I dunno how to properly put it into words but I am cradling them all close to my heart #I loved Cucurucho / Osito and I thought they were interesting and I'm SO SAD we'll never know what Jaiden did for them in the past #Anyways. For anyone who's read this far into my rant– you know how Cucurucho saved the Eggs and Jaiden said she died in Purgatory?#I like imagining that she survived the bomb and wound up finding the Eggs in the aftermath #and she helped them survive until Cucurucho found them #I imagine that Jaiden was the reason they were able to escape from the Island / The Watcher / ElQuackity #She stayed behind to slow down their pursuers. And Cucurucho rescuing all the Eggs fulfilled his agreement with Jaiden—#A promise to protect the Eggs #Like I said a lot of this is copium but that's what I like imagining #TLDR: Cucurucho / Osito did care about her in a weird way but that doesn't mean they weren't manipulating her #May 31 2023 #Idk man I got a lot of emotions about q!Jaiden #Roier too but I feel like I've done way more analysis posts about him and Cucurucho. When talking about Boothill's drink order in 2.6, like. Hoyo could have just glossed it over and described it as "a few" or "several" drinks. They didn't bother to program in the actual glasses or anything- it's not like any of us were gonna count them and notice if they put in the wrong amount.

But they specifically chose the number seven, and if it IS just coincidence, it is a very very fun one.

Hsr is also known to make tarot card references- we had the online event shortly before Penacony's release, I'm pretty sure there's at least a couple simulated universe occurrences and a curio, and then Black Swan's Everything.

The Seven of Cups is a card about dreams and making choices when you have multiple options it front of you. It represents resisting self-deception and false dreams, and not letting yourself be charmed by hallucinations. It is a warning to carefully consider what is real vs what is not, which is very important in Penacony as a whole, being the land of sweet dreams, and it becomes relevant to Boothill later, when Primon starts to fuck with his head.

It can also represent someone who is "deep in their cups," which is a more polite way to refer to someone who uses alcohol as a coping mechanism to an unhealthy amount.

I hate that this could be a serious comment on Boothill being an alcoholic to cope with how much horrifying trauma he's experienced...and I have to discuss it looking at Primon's ridiculous fucking face fjkdslajldk

The overall message of the card is to stand fast, keep a clear head, and make your decision. Which suits Boothill beautifully even outside of this patch, since he is the very picture of ruthlessness and straightforwardness- he is able to see that bright clear line between action and result, and he follows it doggedly! Everything he does, he does wholeheartedly and decisively! And we see it especially well when he fights through the partial regression Primon leads him into!
