Years Later
(KARA IS NOT SUPERGIRL YET. ALEX MET MAGGIE DURING HER PARTY PHASE AND KARA STARTED DATING LENA AFTER FINISHING UNI) It had been years. It had been years since Kara and Alex spoke. Three years since that night. The night Alex had got drunk. The night Alex had said those horrible things. Kara and Eliza always knew Alex was a wild child, especially when she left for college. After that, there was no contact between the family, Alex rejected all of her mum's calls, all of her sisters calls. Kara had been worried, so she flew out to Alex, against Eliza's wishes. -Three years ago... Kara stood outside Alex's doors, pushing her glasses back up her nose. The frames still big for her face. She quickly rapped her knuckles against the door, the door violently vibrating against the force of her knocks. She waited a while until the door swung open, revealing a very drunk and a very angry Alex. "Oh Jesus," she breathed out, rubbing her eyes groggily before looking at Kara, "what the hell are you doing here?" "Me and Mum are worried. You haven't answered our calls, our texts in months. I thought something bad had happened," Kara replied, walking into Alex's apartment, squeezing past her older sister. She went to say something else, but she felt the back of her jumper being grabbed, being yanked back by her sister, letting out a shocked "eep." "You don't get to just walk into my apartment like that. You've seen me, I'm fine, leave," Alex spat, Kara could smell the drink on her breath. "You've always let me walk into your room. I'm your sister," Kara replied, looking at Alex, confused. "You're still telling yourself that sob story?" "I- I don't understand Alex. Did I do something wrong?" Kara asked, frowning at Alex's statement. "Do you want the long list or the short version? Cause I could list a lot of things you've done wrong." Kara's lip trembled, Alex noticed. "Although I guess the main one. The one that started this list is you arriving on this damn planet," Alex spat, not caring that anyone could hear or walk past. "I- I-" Kara trembled, cowering at Alex, who stood over her. "Before you arrived. Before your cousin ditched you with us, it was hard enough for me to make my parents proud. It was always difficult to make them say it, 'we're so proud of you Alex'. Then you had to arrive, and then it was virtually impossible. 'Kara does this' or 'look what Kara did at school today, isn't she clever'. The most common one was 'maybe you should take a page from Kara's book, Alex'. Every time, every time I did something good, it was overshadowed by what the great Kara Zor-El has done. And I'm tired of it, I'm tired of being second best to you, but here. Here, this is where I belong, where my teachers and friends are proud of me, where there are no pathetic aliens making me feel inadequate. All. The. Time," she spat, grabbing Kara by the collar and spitting out the last three words. "Alex. I- I'm sorry. I never realised," Kara cried out, tears falling as the collar tightened around her threat from Alex's grip. "Of course you didn't. You spent all your time crying over home. Boo hoo, 'my planet is gone', 'my parents are dead', 'why did Clark not want me', well who cares, you didn't have a problem taking my parents away from me, you didn't have a problem with getting my dad killed, cause you only care about your self." "I'm- I'm sorry," Kara croaked out. "No you're not. You don't feel guilt. People feel guilt, and you're not a person. Only humans feel guilt, you're just a pathetic alien parasite who should've died along with her planet," Alex roared, smacking the glasses off Kara's face, ignoring the stinging pain in her hand, watching the glasses break in half as they collided with the floor. "Alex. You don't mean that. You're- you're angry. Come home, we can talk to mom about this," Kara was full on crying by now. Dropping to the floor when Alex released her grip, scrambling to recover the pieces of her glasses off the floor. "If you were human, I'd kick you so hard right now. You look pathetic. And don't call her mom. She's my mother, even if she didn't act like it. Not yours, you're just some girl who came into MY family. You're not Eliza's daughter and you sure as hell ain't my sister. My sister wouldn't be so pathetic." Kara looked up at her, her eyes watering even more, "I'm so sorry." "If you want to apologise, leave. Leave and never come back. Never speak to me or my family again." Kara quickly nodded, picking up her broken glasses and running out of the door, sparing Alex one last glance before she was gone. Alex didn't even wait. She slammed her door shut, walked over to her fridge and grabbed a bear, popping the lift off and downing the drink. Forgetting all about her sister. -Present day - thanksgiving day Kara placed the cutlery on the table. Her mom placing the plates down. On the day of the argument, the moment Kara had got home, she had proceeded to pack her clothes, only for Eliza to walk in on her. She proceeded to talk Kara out of leaving, Kara confessing everything that Alex had said. Eliza had calmed down the girl, cuddling her until she had fallen asleep. "Kara, is the turkey ready?" Eliza asked, placing down some salt and pepper down onto the table. "Yeah, I blasted it earlier," Kara replied, making at heat vision gesture with her hands. "Great, I'll begin cutting the meat. When is Lena getting here?" "Not long now, she should be here any minute," Kara replied, smiling at her mother. At that moment, there was a knock at the door, "in fact. I think that's her." Not bothering to use her X-ray vision, Kara rushed over to her door, yanking open the door, "LEN- oh..." Eliza looked up, and then breathed a sigh of relief, as if her deepest wish had been granted. In front of Kara, stood her sister Alex. She had changed, the goth style clothes and makeup had been replaced, now changed into neater, darker clothes, the older sister was wearing a smart suit, a badge on her belt. Her hair had drastically changed, gone was the long, wild style. Instead, her hair was shorter, reaching down to her chin in a neat style. She was no longer thin, her body had filled out slightly, now back to average weight. "Alex," Kara breathed out, taking in her sisters appearance, her eyes widened, suddenly remembering all of the things Alex had said, quickly slamming the door in her face. "KARA," Eliza scolded her, rushing over to the door, "why did you do that." "I- I don't know." Eliza quickly opened the door, and Alex, who looked as if she was going to leave, turned back around, "Alex, sweetie," Eliza quickly grabbed Alex, engulfing her into a hug. Alex grasped onto her mom tightly, crying into her shoulder, "I'm so sorry mom. I'm so so sorry." "It's alright darling. Everything's going to be alright." Alex eventually pulled away from her mother and turned to face Kara, who sucked in a breath, not looking at Alex. "Kar?" Kara winced at the use of Alex's old nickname for her. She reluctantly looked at her sister, and was surprised at the guilt in Alex's eyes. "Kar? I can leave if you want, I'll understand," Alex whispered. "No. No, moms happy you're here, you can stay," Kara muttered, before quickly going to the food, she called out "I assume you want to stay for thanksgiving." Before Alex could decline, sensing Kara's discomfort, Eliza cut in, "of course she would. It's our first family thanksgiving in years." Kara nodded, turning back to the food, preparing the feast. Kara heard Eliza whisper to Alex, "go to the living room. I'll talk to her." "Mom. She doesn't want me here. She's only doing this for you. I should leave... it's not as if I deserve forgiveness, do I?" "Alex, you were going through a tough spot. She needs time. I'm not gonna lie. She was distraught, it was heartbreaking. But she's Kara, she'll forgive you... just giver her time." Alex heard Kara's snort as if to say 'good luck with that.' Alex nodded, slowly leaving the kitchen and sitting down on the sofa, looking around at the room. She saw the pictures, the pictures of Kara graduating from college, pictures of her graduating from uni, a picture of her in a jitters uniform. She had missed so much, her eyes watering at the pictures. She couldn't hear the whisper conversation between Eliza and Kara. "Kara, Kara. You OK?" Kara nodded, not replying. "Kara, talk to me." "Why? Why did she choose to come back today, years after- after the incident." "It's not as if she was in a good position to do so. She was an alcoholic, a drug user. She- she probably wanted to get back on track before she came back. To show us she's serious." "I just- I don't understand how she could expect me to forgive her for- for all those things she said," Kara replied, gesturing with her arms. "I know. I know, and, I won't expect you to forgive her straight away, but- give her a chance. Look at her. She looks nothing like the Alex from three years ago. She's smarter, she doesn't look like those goth girls on that tumblr website you like. She looks like an adult now." "That doesn't negate all those things she said to me. She hit me mom, she hit me in the face and said she'd kick me if I was human. She called me a parasite and said I should've died with Krypton. I'm not gonna forget all of that just cause she got a new hair cut and a suit." "I know it doesn't but- I'm gonna give her another chance and- she was right about somethings." Kara looked at her as if she had been stabbed. "Not about what she said about you. No, about me and Jeremiah not praising her enough. She's right, we always wanted her to do well in school and we never considered that the constant pressure was affecting her. I never stopped to think that we were giving her the impression she wasn't good enough. And then you arrived, and then it was more pressure. We forced her to protect you, something a 14 year old girl shouldn't have to do. And we constantly praised you to make you feel welcome and that- well, it clearly didn't sit well with her. I never wanted to make her feel worthless and unloved and that's on me, not you, but I want to give her a second chance. If she's willing to give me one, then I should give her one as well." "I-" Kara sighed in resignation, "I'll try mom." Eliza sighed in relief and beamed, "thank you darling. I know you won't regret it." "Alex," Kara and called out and Alex basically sprinted into the room. "Yeah?" Alex replied, "is everything OK." "What- what would like to drink. We have wine and-" "No alcohol, please, just water," Alex quickly cut in, "mom, could I- could I talk to Kara alone please." "Of course sweetie, I'll be in the living room if I'm needed," Eliza replied before leaving. After Eliza had left, Kara and Alex stood there in an awkward silence. Alex broke it. "Kara I-" Alex took a deep breath, "I know it won't be enough for your forgiveness and I know I have a lot of work ahead of me if you're willing to let me try, but I want you to know that I am so sorry." "Sorry about what?" Kara asked, not taking her eyes of the food. "About everything. Everything I said, hitting you, making you cry. I am so sorry." "You hurt me Alex, talked about how you felt worthless cause of me but you made me feel worthless. You made me sound like I'm a creature, you blamed be for everything that had gone wrong in your life and it hurt me Alex. The only reason I'm here right now is because of mom." "You- you didn't try to... you know?" "Try to what?" Kara asked, genuinely confused. "Take your own life," Alex whispered. "What. No. I thought about it once or twice, I'm not gonna hide that. But no. I'm talking about when I tried to leave, just like you told me to. It's only because of mom that I didn't leave. She talked me out of it." "I- I really am sorry," Alex replied. "I know, but it's gonna take more than an apology for me to forgive you." "I know, and I'll do whatever it takes." Kara nodded, hesitantly, she replied "OK. If you're willing to try, I suppose I can too. It won't be easy though." "I totally understand that." "OK. So... uh- how long have you been... you know..." Kara replied, waving her hands around. "Sober?" Kara nodded. "Nearly a year," Alex replied. "That's great. What- what caused you to do it?" "I almost died," Alex replied, as if it was nothing. "You what? Does mom know?" "Of course she doesn't. She'd freak out if she did." "She deserves to know Alex. She's your mother, she deserves to know," Kara replied. "I'll tell her one day. I just, I want to sort out things with you first," Alex replied, smiling at Kara. "So... um- how did you 'almost die'?" Kara asked, grimacing awkwardly. "I overdosed. Not long after- after you came to my apartment, I uh- started taking drugs. Any drug I could get my hand on," Alex answered, "one day- one day I took this new drug, and I took too much. Next thing I knew, I'm in hospital. They then helped me recover from my addiction." "That's good, I'm glad they helped, I- even after what happened, I don't know what i would've done if you had died." "It wasn't just them though. That was when I met Maggie," Alex relied. "Maggie?" Kara asked, looking at her confused. "Maggie Sawyer, my girlfriend," Alex replied, watching for Kara's reaction. "Oh, I- I didn't realise you were gay,' Kara stated, bluntly. "That's not a problem is it?" Alex asked, worried. "It'd be a bit hypocritical of me if it was?" Kara muttered, but Alex heard the comment. "I- did I just hear what I thought I heard?" Alex asked, stepping in front of Kara, who nodded, "who?" Kara mumbled something incoherent. "Kara, you know me and mum never spoke gibberish. Dad did though but I don't," Alex teased and Kara smiled softly, liking the way they both slipped back into the banter they had as children. "Lena Luthor," Kara replied. "Luthor. As in 'the family who tried to kill your cousin' Luthor?" Kara glared at Alex. "Right. Not my place to be the protective sister yet." Kara nodded, "and Lena isn't like her family. She despises them." "Well. If you trust her, then I guess I trust her, unless she proves me wrong," Alex replied, causing Kara to beam at her, "how'd you meet anyway." "We met when I worked at Jitters. When she became CEO of L Corp, she would come into the cafe for coffee. We got talking and one day she invited me to her work gala, I said yes and one date became many." "The coffee barista and the CEO. Sounds like a cheesy romance novel." "You read a lot of romance stories then?" "Not me, Maggie. She likes to read aloud sometimes," Alex replied, too quickly for it to be the truth. "Sure. How'd you meet Maggie anyway?" Kara asked, curious. "I was approached when the hospital released me. Some guys from an agency said I had potential. I needed a way to bring myself together and this was my chance. I accepted and I went to a firing range to practice for my test. And she was there." "Why was she at the firing range too?" Kara asked. "She's an NCPD cop. She was training," Alex replied simply. "A secret agent and the cop," Kara started teasingly. "Don't," Alex replied smirking, she walked over to the chopping board, ''may I." "Sure." "So is she coming here today. Lena?" Alex asked, chopping up some vegetables. "Yeah. She should be here soon. What's Maggie doing for thanksgiving?" "Shit. Yeah. I- I didn't really plan on this. Being invited to dinner with you and mom. I told Mags I'd be home for dinner. I better call to answer." "WHAT. NO," Kara yelled. "Kara, what's wrong?" Eliza called out, causing their heads to snap to the living room door. "Fine mom," they both shouted at the same time. "What do you mean no? Do you want me to leave?" Alex asked, stepping away from the chopping board. "Of course not. I- I'm glad you're here now. It- these dinners have never been the same without you. Even despite the things you said," Kara replied, honestly, "but you promised Maggie you'd have thanksgiving with her. You can't cancel." "Then what do I do Kara?" Alex asked. "You invite her here," Eliza's voice came from behind Alex, who spun around quickly to face her mother. "Mom, I- I-" Alex stuttered, her eyes widening. "Alex. You don't have to explain. Do you honestly think I never knew?" "Knew?" Alex squeaked. "That you're gay. I've always known, Alex. I'm your mother," Eliza walked towards her, "you could've told me." "I- I just didn't want to give you another reason to be disappointed in me," Alex confessed. "Oh Alex. How could you being gay ever disappoint me?" "I just-" "Invite her. Kara has Lena coming over. Invite Maggie. I'd love to meet the girl that helped my daughter," Eliza cut in, smiling, rubbing Alex's arm softly. "You heard that," Alex mumbled. "Yes. You also forget that I have friends at National City General. They called me when you were admitted," Eliza confessed. "Why didn't you come see me?" "I did," Eliza revealed, Kara looked at her, shocked, "you were asleep. I asked the nurse to not say anything. If you were going to come back to us, it needed to be on your own terms." Alex nodded. "Invite her," Kara said softly, Alex looked over her shoulder at her. "Are you sure?" Alex asked. Kara nodded, "if you're want to be back in my life, which I do. We want to know what's been happening since..." Alex nodded, "thank you Kara. I mean it." Kara smiled, "go on. We're looking forward to meeting her." Alex smiled back and hesitantly opened her arms. Kara welcomed the hug and squeezed the older Danvers sister. They both felt Eliza wrap them both up in a hug as well. "I'm so proud of you two," she mumbled into her daughters shoulders. "Welcome back Alex," Kara mumbled in reply. "It's great to be back," Alex mumbled in reply. "Welcome home sweetheart." FIN
