Bison falling asleep on top of Kant and Kant having to free himself from his bindings will never not be funny. Kant is low key tied for favorite with Fadel but this is what he deserves, imo

Kant I can kinda get because he was a thief, he probably knows more about running away than fighting, but Bison is a trained assassin and we JUST watched his brother take down three dudes without breaking a sweat. I am more sure than ever that Bison lets him do all the real work lol

I really do love Fadel's little speech to Style. That poor confused man, he's trying so hard to be heartless but it couldn't be clearer that he really isn't, and that he's half desperate to love and be loved. I adore him

Kant telling Style when he does makes sense to me. Maybe before he thought not mentioning the hitman thing was protecting Style, or maybe he didn't think that far (or both. Probably it's both - he wasn't thinking so much as reacting and in some vague way he figured / justified himself by thinking that if Style didn't know, Fadel might not murderize him). Or maybe he thought it wouldn't have to get too involved. But now it is and also I think he tells Style to try to keep himself on track. Because between seeing that Bison has dreams beyond what he does and him helping Kant out with Babe (and calming him down when he was gonna storm in and start beating the shit out of teenagers for info lol - so big brother of him but a bad idea, yes), he's maybe losing sight of the goal a little. He was always reluctant, as I said before, but now it's worse because Bison's becoming less of a job to him maybe but it's still a job he's gotta do. So he thinks telling Style will give him back some perspective - that he'll rein Kant in a bit. Except Style is a whole freak and I don't think that's gonna be how it goes down once he has time to process, lol

Bison finally giving Kant the coveted boyfriend title makes sense after the Babe thing, too. For one, as I said Kant's hot when he's in protective mode. For another, it's the most sincere he's been yet and he's toned down the love bombing, which is good. The dude doesn't realize this yet but basically the only way he gets the real Kant right now is through others and through moments like the one with Babe, and I do like that it's always after one of those moments that he stops playing his little flirty games too. it's a nice touch to show that underneath all the playing, the person that he is falling for is the real version, not the fake, slick one. And since Kant is starting to like Bison back for real, those moments will happen more and more

I said this before but First has maybe the hardest job right now. He has to walk a thin line where we the audience see through Kant but Bison can be forgiven for not seeing it, and he's doing so well. I don't think that most other actors could pull it off as well as he is - that could be my First Thing rearing it's head, but even if it is, I think we can all agree that First Kanaphan really is a master of subtle acting

Speaking of, I'm even more impressed with Joong than I was the first time. He's so good at the whole "pretending to be stoic while raging on the inside" it's insane. Fadel feels SO MUCH all the time and Joong does a great job of showing that

Okay I can't read Thai so maybe there's something I'm missing but I don't see how Fadel reached "this dude was totally involved in our parents' deaths" from two photos and a letter. Unless that letter was a detailed account of a hit

MARLON’S “MAIN FLAWS”

(Whenever I make a new canon character blog here, I always like to check the pulse of the online fandom beforehand to see what opinions there are about the said character, if there even are any LOL. That little ‘screening’ helps me get a better picture of how the character might be perceived by other muses and muns, and I always have a lot of fun resisting, detailing, or doubling down on certain ‘stereotypical’ characteristics. Obscure canon muses rule for customization, as TPC and the fandom provide a loose framework for the character...and then you’re encouraged to go the OC route the rest of the way. It’s a blast, at least for me. Jupiter, Clair and Barry say hello!

So, what’s the point of this post? Well, I think it’s acceptable to say that Marlon isn’t very liked by the wider community, which is fine and fair. Good. Aside from not appearing much in the core games in general, the main critiques that I found are: (1) he’s totally oblivious during the Plasma events, and (2) he’s a pushover trainer and his Gym is not challenging at all.  Again, valid stuff. Let me take this post to explain how I’m going to interpret these two “main flaws” in my portrayal, because it’s already--not in a bad way!--come up a couple times.)

Obliviousness during Plasma events

In the games (and my portrayal), Marlon ultimately does end up helping the protagonist: he lowers the Frigate bridge, remember? Yes, he was/is almost completely unaware of Plasma’s doings, which I take as a combination of his personality and Plasma operating smartly. And yes, he does say that Plasma’s not bothering him, which is...yeah, not the best wording. But for my Marlon, actions will always hold more weight than words. He doesn’t see Plasma actually doing evil things where he’s at, so it’s hard for him to really care about them, for better or worse. 

Marlon also knows that only some of the Plasma members are truly evil, which is why he hesitates and asks thoughtful questions first. He has an open mind and is always ready to forgive people for the right reasons (perhaps forgiving people too quickly.) The ocean accepts all rivers, and he wholeheartedly believes that everybody has good intentions to start. I don’t recognize the take that Marlon wants to help Plasma at all. if he truly took the time to know what they were all about, he’d want to fight a bit harder. He’s not that oblivious.

But, during Plasma’s arc, he doesn’t go all out. For the most part, he’s chilling. And I want to say this: if your muse resents Marlon for his lack of action, that is fine and encouraged. He didn’t have any bad intentions, but for people in the know (aka the protags and power players on both sides), the damage has already been done. And I say let the feelings fly. Just know that Marlon truly didn’t mean any harm. He’s aligned to be overwhelmingly good. Maybe too good, too forgiving...but he’s got a big ol’ smile for everyone regardless.

Eighth Gym pushover   

I actually sort of agree here: I always found Marlon to be an easy battle in the games, especially after battling Drayden’s dragons. In my take, however, Marlon didn’t get to choose where he was in the Gym order...he just kind of “fell in” to the eighth position after Unova needed trainers to replace vacated spots. Due to Humilau’s location, it got locked in the last slot.

It’s really refreshing for me in a way: Marlon’s not the strongest Pokemon trainer ever (definitely not Clair) and he doesn’t take his job seriously at all (which, IMO, is a major breath of fresh air.) You’ve heard of skilled eighth Gym Leaders challenging and beating their regional Elites, now get ready for a mellowed-out surfer bro who’s on the verge of losing his position because he keeps finding better things to do. Unique. Amazing. 

Now, with all this being said, my Marlon is still an extremely skilled trainer. While he’s not going to really challenge the Elites (or even Drayden) until he truly starts focusing on battles, his water team was raised with an overwhelming amount of love and care. Marlon is knows everything about the ocean, and he’ll always be a friend to all aquatic Pokemon. He’s no battlefield killer, and that’s okay. 

As for his Gym...I mean, I feel like trainers appreciate the mellow experience. It beats getting shot out of a cannon, right?

While his team may not be the strongest, Marlon’s Pokemon are taken care of to the max. And, just like their trainer, when they do feel the rush for battle, they truly give it their all. Every time. 😊  

(Whew, this got long! It’s a stream of consciousness ramble by now, but in the end, this post isn’t meant to dispute any of Marlon’s “flaws.” I’m also not demanding that people treat him any different. Just offering my perspective and take(s) on said conceptions, and (hopefully!) providing a bit more character depth for my favorite surfer boy as a whole--because TPC sure didn’t. I’m doing it myself... 😤)

Favorite thing about them:

Beowulf’s motif and his huge ass muscles because they’re goals. Also, the wolf pelt, definitely. Oh! Oh! And his happy-go-lucky attitude because my ass be having it too omfg.

His bravery is another thing, tbh, because he just straight up tells everyone on tv that his match was rigged because he knows he’s not really a hero. He’s the people’s hero. That was the reason in the first place why he got famous! To go in front of people and explain the situation knowing full well you might get back? That takes guts.

Least favorite thing about them:

The “Wrestler Bro” attitude sometimes. It’s fine, but the dudes at Lab Zero gave him a split “Does he think wrestling is real or…?” and “He says things you don’t expect in whispers.” in fights and it’s a wasted Easter egg Imo. The game makes him act and behave as though he’s rather dim-witted, which, cool because he’s a simple guy, but they also shoehorned Annie in to save his butt time to time and I dislike the sort of relationship they gave them both. 

It’s also been said behind the scenes Beowulf did take part of the nationalistic effort in the war. Now, granted, if that was the case? Why didn’t they expand upon this? If he was a soldier, I feel he should obviously be referenced too, if not, as it already seems Parasoul knew he was merely a political pawn, I feel Beowulf’s love of the Canopy Kingdom really should have been broadened on because it’s bad writing Imo that they left out these things in favor of highlighting Annie in his story mode.

Personally in my essay I wrote, I really am big on the Annie inclusion, but I feel that it took away from Beowulf’s true personality and potential. Why add in Beowulf being saved by Annie, if he was meant to destroy Grendel anyway via suplex? I feel if such was the case, have Annie take on Double in the first place after she swallows Beowulf into Gehenna and he takes on Marie Ala Squigly and Filia.

That said, the dimwittedness is rather bland to me. It’s obvious Beowulf’s intellect shouldn’t be the brunt of the joke, and the fanbase was even worse with his treatment, outright ignoring him or treating him as the butt-monkey of the cast because Annie or Minette wasn’t voted in and it really does tick me off. We could have really shown how Beowulf was obviously using the wrestler persona to grieve for Grendel. We really could have had Beowulf figuring out just how big the Medici Mafia is and him going after those who wronged him after beating Marie. 

We really lost out. And that’s my biggest pet peeve.

- Beowulf actually is really literate, and writes poetry time to time. However, no one would pay to see him go “To be or not to be… SUPLEXED”

- He likes to wear suede and you can find him walking and going about in his scarf and puffy jacket drinking hot tea and lattes because just loves winter months

- The Hurting actually is a sentient being and was given to Beowulf via his old sleazy manager Unferth (In the original tale, Unferth gives Beowulf the Hrunting, but beowulf is so strong, he breaks it.) yet it stays strong to this day. When Beowulf is alone, or when he’s really in a pinch, the Hurting opens up its maws and has long sharp fangs and monstrous tongue used to grapple opponents. Only Beowulf speaking to it can calm it down and turn back to an original chair. No one realizes a thing.

- Grendel’s arm hears EVERYTHING beowulf says, as Grendel is still alive through the arm. However, all it hears is Beowulf screaming his quotes so instead of coherent sentences its: “ALL’S CHAIR. RUNNING WILD. AWOO. I AM TWO HUNDRED–”

- Beowulf actually is a secret musical / Opera critic and is a big benefactor of the arts. He also shouts insults and screams very helpful messages to the actors. 

- When out of a job, Beowulf once took up a librarian job working in Filia’s school. Cue Ms. Victoria having to attend to students and him riding on the Janitor mobile and D. Violet secretly having a crush on him. He also bench pressed many a book case. I would know. I was one of the book cases. The kids later were the first ones to see him back in action with Ms. Victoria after he got back in the game, and they gave him a crude letter to him about being a hero and boy oh boy do I love Beowulf being kids’ hero like he was to me.

Unpopular opinion:

As the only male dude besides Big Band I feel he was purposefully thrown under the bus and really, there’s not enough porn or love for him. Much less, everyone seems to have like 2 intro animations, Beo has 1. I call favoritism but, anyway:

I think he doesn’t need a paring to shine as a hero. I think he needs to be shown more so people can realize just how awesome he really is, not with Annie saving his butt all the time so he can tout about wrestling being real.

Had he not shown up, we only would know about him via Peacock’s story mode with Andy Anvil saying he came out of retirement.

Give him love! He’s earned it!

And also like, I think he is as smart, if not, smarter than the rest of the cast, he just hides it under a veneer of being a pro wrestler. No one pays for WWE style entertainment in new meridian, they want real emotion, and that’s what Beowulf’s so used to. Because of that, he whispers and talks about things, but when you really think about them, they all have some meaning behind them, like when he calls Eliza the Crimson Scourge. I hate the idea that people think he’s a dumb dude because he’s not. Y’all just sleeping on a good character.
