Sentinel 9.4
Back in the saddle again
You know, I'm not sure if tinkers actually are "supposed" to be smart. The other examples we have to work off of besides Kid Win are Bakuda (constant state of fucking around and finding out until it killed her), Armsmaster (he of the dumbfuck raid boss solo plot), and Dragon (actually no notes on Dragon's relative intelligence), plus Chariot in just a minute here who literally only succeeds at being a mole because the Protectorate allows him to succeed as a ploy
I'll concede that they're adept engineers and scientists, sure, but you can know how to build a nuclear reactor and still be dumb enough to build it in your backyard. There's no single measure of intelligence that everyone measures high on, that's just not how it goes.
Then again like two-thirds of this chapter are lowkey about Kid having self-esteem issues so like, I get that he's being hard on himself. I feel like half the cape POVs we've gotten so far have self-esteem issues, never mind Taylor Hebert Queen of Self-Image Problems
I'm gonna skim over a lot of this fight like I had in 9.3, but while this can't feel good for one's confidence, honestly I'd mostly just be relieved. Like, yes, let the villains whose powers are Railgun and The Fucking Sun take it easy on me, that's fine, I like my body parts staying in the configuration they have.
Thank God he actually has a chance to feel like he's contributing, without the horror of accidentally killing someone
Wow, Trickster sucks. Why do they put up with this guy?
So, somehow I doubt he's somehow lacking in a specialty, but from the description of his apparent focus issues (plus the fact that taking medication to help with focus nearly took him out) I wonder if the way his tinker stuff goes involves having a bunch of little things, if the lack of focus is somehow a sign of what his specialty actually is.
Oh fucking boy
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay (sarcastic)
Also I don't know why they specifically would go to cities that have already been Endbringered but there's a real "kick them while they're down" energy to it that I do not care for. Goddamn jackals.
Is it the "another tinker" thing or the "that wasn't Armsmaster" thing that he's more excited about lmao
Weld's adapting a little better to his role, and Clockblocker is able to keep his mouth shut and play along, so things are improving.
I dunno man, it's a citywide apocalypse, does bedtime matter anymore?
Hey what the
Fuck
is going on here
Tinker-to-tinker communication
Y'know, now I'm curious what the wages are for a non-Tinker Protectorate member. Obviously Tinkers can have it made if they've got something the higher-ups want, but is Miss Militia making enough to own a house? Is your income tied to merch sales?
Think this is the first time someone has outright said triggering as a parahuman rewires your brain to some extent. Curious to see further elaboration on that.
I think if you're gonna hire a mole, you should make sure they can lie convincingly. That feels like step two.
(Step one is "make sure you can trust this person to be a mole for you")
Fucking gottem
Well hey Kid, looks like you're pulling your weight after all
Current Thoughts
I do think Sentinel is a neat arc but I'll admit, in recounting and rereading this it lost me a little bit. That might just be the Travelers fight though, I could feel the lack of stakes to the fight like a gap between my teeth.
Kid seems like a solid character, classic impulsive inventor with an actual exploration of what that impulsiveness does to his work ethic and self-worth. I'm glad he gets a chance to shine here and I hope he figures out his exact specialization so he can stop being so down on himself
The Wards do seem to be coalescing into more of a team as things progress, sure would be a shame if the resident lone wolf was to fall for obvious bait and disrupt that or something.

Ok because it keeps getting auto removed from the subreddit, I'll just post it here then.
So, Browbeat originally survived Leviathan, but was retconned into dying because of the Stranger 12 memes. We all know this part.
But.
On kind of a reread to keep pace with livereads, and I noticed this passage in Sentinel 9.5:
These are, I would guess, memorials of the Wards that died during Leviathan.
There are two memorials. The number of dead Wards, now, retcon taken into account, is three.
I'm sure you can see the problem here.

I hate to say 'Sophia almost has a point' but her comment in 9.2 about not rendering the victim they rescued powerless or she'll never get over it is...
Not entirely without merit? Like, not right, but not wrong?

hello,, remember that Jimmy centric harbinger of death au I mentioned months back? Have a snippet of a scene from the first chapter :) (which will be posted in full soon!)
âJimmy, look out!âÂ
From over his shoulder, he hears itâthe spark and a slight buzz, like static; for a weird second, he thinks of the radio and the crackling, the sand in the desert. But he knows better, he knows that hiss, a sound that haunts him both awake and asleep. It doesnât matter that he was just facing that direction and had seen no sign of any creepersâthere was a conditioned response to what he just heard, everyone has one; Jimmyâs is to drop, ducking to the ground hands up and over his headânot that they wouldâve done anything to protect him had the threat been real.Â
And while nothing happenedâno crater dug itself into the ground, no hole ripped itself through his barely-armored body, no gasp as he woke up back in that desertâthe panic was most definitely real. Seasoned target of one too many jokes, following the usual progression Jimmy knows the anger comes next; the panic would fade upon the realization that the threat wasnât real and the annoyance at whatever joke was played would take its place, no less insistent and intense as the feeling before it. But as Jimmy cowers on the ground, catching his breath, his hands frantically cataloging limbs and appendages and understanding he was fine, he doesnât find that his fear gives way to angerâhis fear wasnât giving away at all.Â
His ears are ringing, which is weird because there had been no actual explosion. The noise came from somewhereâprobably a disc if he had to guessâbut it was pre-recorded, only a playback of some other detonation, it shouldnât have nearly been enough to do any real damage. And it didnât seem to for anyone else either, if the laughter he vaguely hears behind him is any sort of indication. The perpetrators are fine, but even so, Jimmyâs head rocks like there had been a blast, like he needs time to recover.Â
No matter how many times he repeats to himself that nothing had happened, that it was just a stupid prank, he canât seem to calm down.Â
A hand touches his arm and he flinches hard, blinking up to find Scott just trying to help him to his feet. âEasy, Jimmy, easy.â Jimmy lets Scott pull him until heâs standing, brushing him off.Â
Martyn is still laughing at his own prank, wiping a tear from below his eye, practically wheezing; itâs unclear how much of it is real and how much is for show. âI have gotten a one hundred percent success rate with that,â he brags with a happy sigh, hands out to his sides, inviting them to join in on his praise. âI gotta say, Iâm pleased.â Â
âWhat was that noise?â Jimmy asks, but his question goes unanswered.Â
âHe got me as well,â Scott says, but then he turns to look at Jimmy with a smirk. âBut not nearly as aggressively as he got you, Jimmy.âÂ
Jimmy wants to join them in their amusement, he really does, but his heart rate hasnât quite recovered yet. Heâs embarrassed, almost, to still be feeling it. He blinks a few times hoping to clear something in his brain, begging himself to calm down, to chill out before someone notices.Â
But of course, the next thing Martyn says is âJust a music disc Tim, jeez, you alright there?â Not sounding at all actually concerned about Jimmyâs state of being; his deceptively kind words more an excuse to poke at Jimmyâs weak spots than actually inquire about his feelings.
He wants to play it cool, to take the joke as easily as heâs sure the others have, but instead on instinct his shock makes him shove his arm in Martynâs face, crowing âIâve got goosebumps, Martyn, look!âÂ
Martyn draws back in his distaste, his own hand coming up to push Jimmyâs arm back down and away. âYep, I see that alright, thank you.â
Scott pats Jimmy twice on the shoulder, something heâs quickly getting sick of happening in this sort of context.
âIâve got a few more people to get with it, though, soââ Martyn says, clearly trying to take his leave now that he did what he came here to. âActually,â he interrupts himself, âhave you seen Grian anywhere?â
Scott shakes his head, âNo, Iââ
Andâmaybe just a moment behindâJimmy understands he means to repeat the prank again, and speaks without really thinking about it or meaning to for the second time today.Â
âI donât know if thatâs a good idea, actually.âÂ
Martynâs eyes dart away from him and then back again like he's giving some sort of aside to an audience, acknowledging the weirdness of Jimmyâs comment with a 3rd party whoâs in on the bit. âUm, what?â
Jimmy ignores the feeling that heâs walking himself into a joke, calling on Martyn to pick him apart like usualâbecause the feeling of wrong wrong wrong wrong is so much stronger. His ears are still ringing from the explosion that didnât happen, and he rubs a hand over one of them trying to make it go away before he answers, but for some reason, that only makes it louder.Â
He winces, both from the pain and the knowledge that he knows exactly how this conversation is going to go over before he even starts it.Â
âI said you oughta stop that.â He tries to be firm, but from the smirk on Martynâs face, heâs not going to succeed. It makes Jimmy double down, rush the rest of the sentence out of his mouth as quickly as possible, trying to avoid the possibility of being dismissed. âSomeone could get seriously hurt!â
âItâs not a real creeper though, is it Timmy?âÂ
Jimmy feels the helpless frown settle on his face, and the frustration that comes with knowing he's going to lose but not wanting to give up; he acts and speaks with the same level of intensity as he does with everything else, but there's an underlying urgency here that he does not doubt even though he doesnât quite understand its cause. He doesnât bother answering Martynâs question, knowing at least enough to understand that he isnât meant to.Â
âI still donât think you should be doinâ that though!â He argues, and the worst possible turn the conversation could take begins from there; dismissal of the point that the prank is potentially dangerous for the more amusing idea that Jimmy is a sore participant.Â
Martyn rolls his eyes and crosses his arms. âOh come on,â he drawls. âTake a joke, take a jokeâŚâÂ
Jimmy groans, âBut Martyn, I think thââ
Martyn groans back, âBut Timmy!âÂ
Scott laughs and Jimmy turns to glare at him, giving up on his sentence halfway through.Â
Martyn takes the distraction as his leave, already having jogged halfway across the tiny valley by the time Jimmy looks back in his direction.Â
âYouâre gonna kill someone with that!â Jimmy yells after him, but Martyn is ignoring him and making really exaggerated gestures of goodbye, like he's just given a performance and the crowd is shouting for an encore. He brings both hands to his mouth and blows a kiss to his imaginary admirers, then clasps his hands together giving a large bow; waving, smiling, mouthing thank you.Â
Jimmy calls again âIâm serious Martyn!â But his friend fakes a laugh and says âoh, youâre all too kind!â Before disappearing over the crest of the mountain across them.

Been mulling over a wormfic idea recently (technically a crossover with SotM, but I would be trying to keep it acessible for Worm onlys) Post GM
So basically the death of Zion kind of opens up earth to the interference of some cosmic entities. And one of them, Malavox, saves Taylor from Contessa, and even heals her mind and boosts her powers. All he asks in return, is that Taylor bring the world to heel, place her boot upon the collective necks of everyone, for her to CONQUER. Which, y'know, Taylor really isn't interested in, for many reasons. To her objections, Malavox, following his normal patterns, says not to worry, she is free to leave his service at any time. He'll even leave her with the enhanced powers. Malavox will however be taking the mental healing back, and leaving Khepri free to roam in Taylor's place. Now aware of her actions as Khepri, and afraid of unleashing a powered up version of that, Taylor agrees to work for him.
Taylor meets up with the friends she has left who don't want to kill her. Rachel is there, Taylor cries on her shoulder. Taylor is mad that she was lied to about Grue. Strong emotions are had. A weird psychic AI that Malavox connected Taylor to tells her that She will likely face opposition from agents of Malavox's rivals.

Oh, so that wasn't entirely just a wildbowism earlier, Flechette really is just gay. Parian seems like a much better girlfriend for her than Shadow Stalker. Maybe if the Wards keep leaning into the extreme violence and ignoring rule of law and all that, Flechette can just go rogue herself and the two of them can hook up and form a group that actually tries to help people. And also lets them be gay together.

I feel like Kid Win's arrival on the tenement where Chariot's family lived doesn't get enough analysis, because there are so many untold stories and implications squeezed into the four lines and two paragraphs that go from Kid Win's arrival at the building to meeting Chariot's mom at the door to the family's apartment.

Sentinel 9.1
Weld's lucky he's endearing, bc oh my god the ways he manages to step in it this arc
Bro, the city has been kaiju'd to hell, everyone who could use the airports to get out has gotten out, no money is gonna be made any time soon so business isn't happening, and nobody is dumb enough to come to Brockton Bay for pleasure right now. No shit the airport is empty. I'm more surprised that you're surprised by that.
Hey Piggot, sorry your job has gotten like a million times more stressful, hope you're hanging in there
Is robbing part of an airport profitable? That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about airports or robbery to dispute it.
Also it's interesting to see economics and class inequality come up again, especially in the context of disaster response and response to disasters. The gap between rich and poor only gets wider in times of crisis, and the gap was already pretty fucking wide.
So, finally the PRT power classifications get laid out, having been introduced in Interlude 6 and mentioned again in 8.7. And it's mentioned explicitly as something that was used to sort out villains before eventually getting applied to heroes as well. Presumably an effort to know how to respond in case a hero goes off the rails, or maybe just trying to find more justifications to use the system. Dunno. Don't think it matters a ton in the grand scheme of things, trying to shove every power into a neat labeled box seems unproductive after a certain point.
Also yeah "Brute" is a bit of an unfortunate choice, with the additional yikes factor that they were specifically using it to describe villains at first. Like oh, don't worry about dishing out the punishment, it's a Brute after all.
I think Armsmaster would sooner chew off his other arm than retire, so there's definitely a story there
Also yeah Flechette locked in, as expected
This is the only real thing I can ding Piggot's standing for, I don't think it's hard to tell that a friendly rivalry would mean nothing in this context, so the fact that she's coming down on it for even existing feels like an overreaction. Then again, she's trying to bail out a battleship with a bucket, being humorless is hardly the worst offense in a time like this
"They weren't strictly homeless because they were squatting in abandoned commercial and industrial buildings" is certainly a perspective. When they talk about the intentions of Leviathan, it almost makes me wonder if the Docks were targeted to exacerbate things, get more people pissed and hurting and desperate. Between this, being able to target cities based off of social instability and potential media coverage, and possibly trying to eat or free Noelle, that's a lot of different factors possibly urging this attack and its behavior during said attack, and it might just be all of them at once. That's fucking freaky.
Also I think there was a mild slip-up here, calling Moist a Shifter instead of, I'm assuming, a Changer.
Shaper instead of Changer again
Interesting that Hookwolf is the head of the second Empire successor group, wonder if Krieg just didn't have the drive for leadership or got killed after the Endbringer stuff (thus not showing up on the memorial). Also mildly surprised that he's got the biggest number of parahumans.
The fact that the Pure have been rejected "for the time being" raises my hackles though, I've gotta be real. If the Protectorate/PRT actually stoop low enough to cooperate with fucking Nazis I'm gonna start feeling a lot less charitable
So three Masters is Skitter, Bitch, and Regent. I would guess that Skitter is the one they're concerned about, knowing Shadow Stalker's face, and that the other two would be who they consider possible sociopaths.
"Faultline's Crew" is a terrible name honestly. Coil and Faultline both just suck at naming teams...
Also 12 is the highest number we see here, which I guess means Labyrinth is on paper the most busted cape in the city. Good for her.
That's gotta fucking suck, never having a moment away from prying eyes whenever you're in public. How much of this is Weld being a champ and how much of this is Weld being resigned to this being his life?
That. Is rough.
So, that's something interesting. There's an interesting dichotomy between how parahumans can utterly wipe the floor against regular human combatants, even facing 25-to-1 odds with no purely defensive abilities (Grue's darkness can't stop a lucky hit) and coming out of it totally clean, and now there's this concern. We know that the early independent heroes got their shit rocked, Vikare got killed by a blow to the head during a sports riot of all things, so is there an upper limit on how many humans a parahuman can face at once? Does it hinge on how many parahumans are working together to face the threat, like could Grue only take on ten guys on his own if Skitter and Gregor and Spitfire hadn't been there to watch his back?
I'm probably overthinking this, but Piggot apparently considers it worth worrying about, so I won't dismiss the topic out of hand. Parahumans seem to end up above, below, or otherwise apart from the rest of humanity, and that separation could prove troublesome.
Gotta be strange to have your boss act like your dad, but needs must when you don't even remember who you are.
Also yeah fingers crossed Piggot holds to principles here, she doesn't seem the type but I've been disappointed before
Jesus Christ that's a really long-term plan. They've been at this since what, the late 80s?
Also interesting that the terminology uses is stated in-universe to be dated
So what's the "core" Protectorate team in this context? Is that at or above the standing that Armsmaster had before he derailed his own career? Are we talking Triumvirate level, or is there a middle ground I'm not aware of?
I also really really want to know what the meme was involving Weld, that's such a specific thing to have happen
I'm shocked that this would be considered frivolous. That's the kind of opportunity you'd normally seize with both hands, the idea of waving it off seems bizarre. Do they need the Wards too much to fight homicidal supervillains and disarm megaton bombs to let them *checks notes* get more kinds of training in? That feels shortsighted.
Then again a lot of things in Brockton Bay seem shortsighted. The greatest threat against Coil's grand scheme is his own impulsiveness (although easy money says that Taylor will become his biggest problem down the line), the Empire for some reason bothered with petty street crime and protection rackets while being run by, really cannot overstate this, the CEO of a pharmaceutical corporation that was doing well enough to have an entire skyscraper, and Lung put in like 1% of the effort he could've given to running the city. Maybe nobody is coming up with five-year plans because nobody is confident they'll live another five years, or maybe it's something in the water supply.
This is funny but it's so fucking rude, oh my God
Oh Weld, Weld no, do not think about Shadow Stalker like that, she'd corrode your dick off your body with her personality.
Oh, Weld. You have put your foot in your mouth already.
This story takes a pretty dim view of humanity, honestly. Poisoning an entire apartment block with chlorine gas just so you can loot it and take over feels extreme; I'm not gonna say it could or would never happen, unfortunately people are just as capable of evil as they are of good and there's not really a limit to how far either of those things can go, but for me at least it's somewhat curious that we don't hear more about any altruists in the city outside of the Protectorate; there would have to be good Samaritans somewhere in the mix, and not even most of them would've already been stabbed or beaten to death by opportunists.
Maybe that's just the perspective the Wards are giving us, but call me crazy, I don't think Taylor is going to be any more optimistic about how things are going.
Also, Clockblocker is jumping down Weld's throat here, but he's not strictly wrong. He's coming into this fresh-faced, having not dealt with any of the aftermath of Leviathan. The strain being put on these kids is intense, not least with the losses that the Protectorate suffered and the teammates they're still grieving. Fifteen hour patrols, Jesus Christ.
Bro got owned by a thirteen-year-old.
How did he not get briefed on the dead Wards? How did he not already look them up for himself? Someone, I think multiple someones, dropped the ball there. I'm also surprised that Weld even asked the question instead of just drawing his own conclusions or looking into it when nobody could catch him being a fool.
Current Thoughts
I do not envy Weld for the situation he's being thrown into. Whatever happens in Boston is clearly a different kind of ballgame from what they're doing here in Brockton Bay, and he has not been read into it yet.
I don't envy any of the Wards, this might be the most thankless position anyone in the city might be stuck with, and none of them are even old enough to buy cigarettes or vote, but they have to fend off looters and wade through waters tainted with death and ruin for hours at a time.
How many rights do you sign away taking this job, getting your ass put on the line like this when not even the military takes kids this young into combat? I think Skitter was right, this whole arrangement blows chunks
