Kuduz 150 ülkeden fazlasında görülen ve aşı ile önlenebilir viral bir hastalıktır. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO) nün rakamlarına göre her yıl 59.000’in üzerinde insan kuduz nedeni ile kaybedilmektedir. Kuduz virüsü santral sistemini enfekte ederek ölüme yol açan bir enfeksiyon etkenidir. Olguların çoğu Asya ve Afrika kıtasında görülmektedir. İnsan bulaşlarının %99’undan fazlasında kaynak kuduz köpeklerdir. Köpekler dışında kediler, tavşanlar, yarasa, rakun, kokarca gibi vahşi hayvanlar da hastalığı ısırık ve tırmalama yolu ile bulaştırabilirler. Her yıl 28 Eylül günü Kuduz hakkında farkındalığı arttırmak ve önlenme önerilerinin hatırlatılması amacıyla “Dünya Kuduz Günü” olarak anılmaktadır. Bu tarihin seçilmesinin en önemli nedeni ise, bu tarihin, kuduz aşısını geliştiren Louis Pasteur’ün ölüm tarihi olmasıdır. İnkübasyon süresi birkaç gün ile 6 yıl arasında değişmekle birlikte genellikle 4-12 haftadır. Başlangıç semptomları ateş, kas ağrısı, vücutta iğnelenme hissi ve ayrıca ısırık yerinde yangı hissidir. Daha sonra iki tip klinik tablodan biriyle giden hastalık tablosu oturur. Saldırgan (%70) (iştahsızlık, anksiyete, konfüzyon, ajitasyon, halüsinasyon, salgı artışı, sudan korku ve yutkunma güçlüğü tabloları) ve paralitik (%30) (ilerleyici ve komaya giden paraliziler) tipte seyredebilmektedir. Şüpheli ısırıklarının %40’ını 15 yaşın altı çocuklar oluşturmaktadır. Köpeklerin aşılanması ve insan ısırıklarının engellenmesi ile kuduzun eliminasyonu mümkün olmaktadır. September 28 each year is World Rabies Day; a day that focuses on increasing awareness and decreasing disease in countries where rabies occurs. Rabies is present in many countries in Africa and Southeast Asia in Bali and Thailand. Rabies is a fatal virus present in the saliva of infected animals that spreads through bites and scratches. All warm-blooded animals are susceptible to rabies, so wild animals such as foxes, racoons and bats, domestic animals such as dogs (even cows!), and people. From the initial bite or scratch, rabies travels up nerves to the brain. The first signs of rabies generally occur about 2–3 months after the initial bite/scratch and start with pain and tingling around the bite/scratch site. As the virus travels, you see hyperactivity, aggressiveness, insomnia, confusion, salivation and fear of water or drafts of air. While rabies is a 100% preventable disease, more than 59,000 people die from the disease around the world each year. World Rabies Day is an opportunity to reflect on our efforts to control this deadly disease and remind ourselves that the fight is not yet over.
