I’m interested in starting to spin, but where do you buy your fleeces/materials in general? There’s so much out there I’m just not sure where to start

I get mine from a mixture of online and in real life. I know a shearer who gives me llama and alpaca fleece from time to time, my local yarn store has a fibre section, I buy fibre from Etsy and worldofwool, and I get other fleeces from eBay.

If you're starting out, I recommend getting something like a drop spindle kit with a few different fibres to try out. I started out with something like [ this one ]. Mine had all medium to coarse breeds, so they were much easier to spin than slippery merino when I was still learning how to draft.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

Hi! I just saw your post on Finn wool, and I was wondering if you know where one could purchase some? I've been wanting to try spinning it for a while but we don't have it available here. I know it's available at WorldOfWool and similar places but when possible I prefer to buy either directly from the source but at least from the same country 🤔

Hi! Currently it's hard to find finnsheep wool in any form, because Finland lacks infrastructure to get the wool from the source to spinneries. For a long time it was unprofitable to sell wool. Things are slowly getting better though. But that's not what you asked!

If you don't mind that the wool might have some other breeds mixed in, Pirtin Kehräämö sells washed wool. Pirtin Kehräämö buys wool from lots of farmers and spins bigger batches of yarn, so this might have wool from other breeds mixed in, but it's all definitely from Finnish sheep.

Your other option is to contact Finnsheep breeders directly. If you scroll down on this page, it has a list of current breeders under "Jalostuslampolat 2022" with links to their websites/Facebook pages/ email addresses.

Finally, if any of my followers knows of a good place to get some, let us know! I could also be willing to deal you some wool myself if you contact me off anon, since I have local sources for wool that are not available online.

Like this! This is from the worldofwool site. When I'm spinning it it has this kind of shimmering lustre that I guess comes from it being a true worsted and very densely spun yarn with other colours mixed in with that nice purple. The purple is the dominant colour and the rest just almost blend seamlessly into it unless you're really looking for where the colour changes

one advantage of being in a manic episode is i finally am spinning all this fibre i've had in my stash for like almost two years at this point and i actually have a plan for what i want to do with my unicorn merino fibre:

like whenever i spin merino it ends up cobweb whether i want it to or not so why not just roll with it and show off my 200g of frankly stunning yarn in the form of a light sweater
