February 1st is #worldhijabday and in light of the political climate within and outside of the United States I chose to participate. I am lucky to know so many badass women who wear the hijab on a daily basis. I wore this as an act of solidarity with my wonderful, brilliant coworkers as well as my amazing students. I am here to use my voice to empower those who feel disheartened and those who are afraid. I stand with them in solidarity and I will be there with them fighting to truly live in the land of the free. #worldhijabday #worldhijabday2017 #solidarity #nobannowall #lovetrumpshate (at Metro Schools College Prep)

The hijab for me has been one of those things you slip on to without much thought for the longest time. You don't give it much thought, just like you wouldn't leave the house without putting on shoes! My outfit isn't complete without a scarf, it's a necessity (at least when I'm not in the house) -- How has it been? -- Honestly I wouldn't have it any other way, probably because this is the only way have known since I was about thirteen. But yes, I do get tempted to ditch it at times, shame shame I know haha. Like when my hair has grown longer and I just want others to see the growth too! But alhamdulilah, it is a blessing. And thinking of jannah as the ultimate reward put things into perspective. I appreciated my hijab the most during adolescence. My body was going through these changes and I felt most at ease covering up rather than answering awkward questions and comments from aunties talking about how 'you've really grown up' or 'I have a son'. I think the hijab is more than just the scarf but translates to the entire outfit, and the easiest approach for me has been to wear the abaya as it has great coverage. However as a result, I feel my style is too simplistic (not simple, there's a differnce). So I'm currently trying to spice up my style a little, finding clothes that are fit for my body - not too loose, and not too tight. -- Fatma Sultan is an architect. During wintertime, I wear a scarf over my head similar to what you would see on a Muslim Woman who covers her head. I tell you the truth, the looks I get from people in the car driving and when I may be walking from my car is deplorable! It's just a piece of material over my head to protect me from the wind. It's prejudice in its purist form I've seen that same look when they look at me with my White husband and I am the only Hispanic or minority in the room! When I see a Nun dressed in her habit I think about the consecration she made before God to live a life of purity and Servanthood to God. I never heard anyone being fearful of a nun because of what she was wearing. Women who wear a hijab, wear it to honor God as well. Don't let ignorance perpetuate ignorance. #worldhijabday2017 (at Fort Worth, Texas)

We published an article to commemorate the #worldhijabday2017 . Credit of the idea goes to @ruqayyah_dp . I addressed the issue of discrimination that exists between us Muslim sisters which makes some sisters think they are better than the others. May Allah (S) shield us from arrogance that stems from having knowledge. Amina has been out of the hijab more than she has been in it. She graduates with an LLB later this year. Within her quest of the law she's found more than just law. She put her life in order as well, she says. She's been through a journey of faith that saw her first walk the streets of atheism. Atheism was dark and hollow, she says. - "Imagine having to convince yourself every day that you are right. It was constantly reaffirming myself that I am right. Which simply meant then I wasn't right." - So she kept walking, moved on to Deism. But the void kept weighing on her. - Nice hijab, I tell her. (It was getting too intense) - Thanks. (No smile) - My digression is retraced. - How was it? The first time you put it on? - Putting it on my head for the first time after almost five years plus was the hardest part. It felt so heavy. Like I was shackled almost. Weighed so heavily on my head. It wasn't even the weight of eyes passing judgements, and their embellished rumours. It was the weight of me looking at myself. The courage of facing my new found truth, and falsifying my old truth. It was me knocking on the door I had walked out of after realising this was where I belonged, like the prodigal son. - How does it feel now? - Beautiful. Nothing short of beauty. I didn't know why I wore this then, but this is my beauty now. And no one can take it away from me. (Hence the pic) - 1st Feb, tomorrow is #worldhijabday. You can wear a hijab, and share your experience with us here, just slide into the dm😉 - #worldhijabday #worldhijabdayke #worldhijabday2017 #writersofinstagram #hijab
