5 star reads: "We Are Only Ghosts" by Jeffrey L. Richards
Something about Jeffrey L. Richards’ We Are Only Ghosts hooked me fast and it’s going to stay with me for a very long time. I might think it was the cover, because of the concentration camp tattoo on the waiter’s forearm, but it probably wasn’t that. I think that probably made me wary when I first came across the novel, and I did have it for a little while before I read it, because fiction set…

if you have ANY interest in WWII or the Holocaust, read “Night” by Elie Wiesel. That book is genuinely the best book I’ve ever read.
It’s his own written narrative about what he went through in multiple concentration camps and the ghetto he was sent to. It’s extremely good and I would recommend it to anyone who is a history nut, or is interested in WWII. There’s two more books, it’s a trilogy, I haven’t read the other two but “Night” is a phenomenal read. It’s quick. It’s less than 200 pages. But I would 100% recommend it.

So, I am about halfway done with my historical fiction novel, which is set during World War 2. It's very loosely based on my great-great uncle's (my maternal great-grandmother's baby brother) experiences on the Eastern Front (Russia, in case you don't know). He was conscripted into the German army (then called the Wehrmacht) just after he had gotten married. He was eventually captured as a POW, escaped, returned home, and after the war, he went out to look for his sister (Great-grandma's baby sister) who didn't come home one night and was caught by the NKVD (The Russian police at the time. They lived in Dresden which was in Russian occupied Germany) and thrown in a prison camp for 3 years. Once he was released, he and his wife moved to Hennef, which was in French occupied Germany.
I understand this is a controversial subject, but I swear to you, this book is very anti-Nazi. Wolf has redeeming moments throughout the book and comes out a better person.

My review: (slight spoilers)
The Witches of World War II combines two things I’m quite interested in: witchcraft and World War history. The premise of the graphic novel, especially the whole “magic killing fascists”, is an amazing concept that made me want to read it. The narrative, however, isn’t as gripping as it could be.
The main character Doreen Valiente is very interesting though her motives aren’t always as clear, especially knowing how she turns to witchcraft after constantly being met with superstitious objects rather than actual witchcraft. Still, I would love to read more about her. She felt written like the real person she was, which makes the historical genre so much more believable. This believability of the characters also made less likeable ones not bother me as much as they usually would.
Story-wise, I definitely liked that some chapters ended on a thrilling plot twist or cliffhanger. The overall story, however, wasn’t entirely my cup of tea as it sometimes felt a bit messy. Especially with the interesting mix of politics and witchcraft, I wish it was more engaging and felt as real as the characters did. Maybe it would have worked better as a series of graphic novels, but overall, it just needed some more depth. Nevertheless, the art and character design felt quite nice, looking a lot like the comics I used to read when I was younger, and it was easy to distinguish the characters from one another through their design and personalities.
If Wiccan history and World War II stories are up your alley, and graphic novels aren’t new to you, definitely give this one a try because the mix of the two makes for an interesting enough read!
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a chance to read an ARC of this book for free, in exchange for an honest review.*

📚 The Postmistress of Paris by Meg Waite Clayton
I don’t really have a ton to say about this book. It’s set during World War II, a setting which is already a plus in my book. I did enjoy the story, but I don’t remember a ton of the details. It’s not a story that’s super impactful or mind-blowing, but it is definitely enjoyable.

Reviewed: "Small Acts of Defiance" by Michelle Wright
If you’ve been around for the minute that this humble book/writing blog has been in existence, you’ll know that I have a weakness for historical fiction but that historical fiction set in or around World War II can be hit or miss because as a lover of history, I don’t like it when history is changed to fit a fictional narrative. Michelle Wright’s Small Acts of Defiance hits all the right…

REVIEW: History Comics - World War II - Fight on the Home Front (2023)
A Graphic Novel by Kate Hannigan and Josh Rosen I’m honestly tired of superhero comics (like most people these days), but I still love the medium of sequential art and graphic novels. As a result, I’m routinely on the lookout for other types of comic books to read. After visiting a couple of museums that had them in their gift shops, I’ve really come to love comics based on historical events…

History Comics: World War II - Fight on the Home Front shows how the war changed the US at home
History Comics: World War II - Fight on the Home Front shows how the war changed the US at home #comics #comicbooks #graphicnovel #ncbd
When we think of war, we often focus on the battlefields. But during the war years of 1941 to 1945, Americans at home did whatever they could to support the troops and defeat the Nazis. While millions of soldiers ship out to fight on battlefronts in Europe and the Pacific, millions of men, women, and children step into new and exciting roles in cities and towns all across the United States. Four…
