but I think the reason why I can now accept and fully love the jukebox aspect of Trolls is because they fully embrace music into the story.

First movie kinda established that they sing and all BUT it’s the second movie is what fully made me believe that singing is part of them. World Tour was brilliant for expanding the world building with different trolls based on music genres. Beside it being just such a fun concept, it makes it so that music is literally part of their culture and species.

That’s why it feels more normal for me when they break into a song. It’s their #1 way of expression and living. They’re musically-based creatures.

By the third movie, now they’re just having fun with the whole idea of music by playing around with the idea of bands. And I love it.

They actually used the aspect of music to drive the lessons of their story. It’s been a while since I watched the first movie so I actually don’t remember what it was about but:

World Tour (2nd movie):

About accepting and celebrating all different types of culture and people = Used music genres.

Band Together (3rd movie):

About family and working together = Used music bands.

It works really well. So it makes me wonder what they could do for another possible movie? What other idea could they play around it? What if they don’t follow with another story based on music? Would it work?

But yeah that’s what I’m very excited and scare for if another movie were to come.

Wanting to Deliver a “Supremely Cunning Fanservice”, Just Like It Says in the Title

Q: Beginning with the release of her album, “Your Supremely Cunning Princess”, 2024 sure has been a spectacular year for mona. Please tell us your thoughts about it.

Natsukawa: We recorded the songs for “Your Supremely Cunning Princess” from April to June, and since most of the tracks were newly recorded, we had to record every single week! Though, around that same time, I had my own solo productions to do, along with works for TrySail, a group that I’m a part of, so I think “I sure got to sing lots of songs this year!” (laughs).

Q: mona’s first solo concert, “#I’ll Fanservice You Supremely Cunningly♡”, will be taking place on the 14th of December. How did you feel when you first heard the news about the concert?

Natsukawa: To tell you the truth, back in May, the president of my agency, as well as some staff who work on projects involving mona, came to watch a stageplay I was in. I was in the middle of recording the album at the time, so I said “I wanna perform onstage as mona, y’know?” while we were chatting with each other. And then, a few months later, I was told “Let’s hold a mona solo concert.”, so my very first thoughts on the concert were “Wow, these incredible guys sure work fast!!”! (laughs)

Q: Please give us a hint as to what you have done to prepare for the solo concert!

Natsukawa: I’ve been singing the songs from her newly released album, “Your Supremely Cunning Princess”, as well as the songs from her previous album, “#Even If It’s Just By Name, Please Remember Me”, a ton! I’ll be thrilled if you look forward to the concert while reminiscing on all of mona’s works up till now!

Q: What do you keep in mind when you’re singing as mona? 

Natsukawa: While mona is the definition of a sparkly mainstream idol, at her core, she’s Narumi Mona, a girl who seriously hates to lose. She often lets her true personality shine through in the lyrics of her songs, so I keep her strong competitive spirit, her unwavering heart, and her slightly weak side in mind whenever I sing her songs!

Q: What has left the biggest impression on you during the time that you have portrayed mona up till the present day?

Natsukawa: It has to be how her song “Fansa” is loved by both idols and creators alike, and that many of them have sung covers of it! (laughs) Mona is a girl who loves and looks up to idols, and is even striving to become an idol herself, so the fact that there are so many real-life idols who can relate to her song makes me really happy too!

Q: What do you think mona/Narumi Mona’s charm points are?

Natsukawa: I think her biggest charm point, which applies to both mona and Narumi Mona, is how she never wavers. Regardless of what anyone else may say or think, she’s able to strongly declare “I want to be an idol!” and “I am an idol!”. And even though she seems to be a typical modern girl, she shows off her tenacious side in the most unexpected of situations, which reveals how interesting and promising she truly is!

Q: Lastly, please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to mona’s solo concert, “#I’ll Fanservice You Supremely Cunningly♡”.

Natsukawa: I’m so excited to perform onstage as mona, and to be able to deliver her songs to her Monacas! I’m going to deliver “Supremely Cunning Fanservice” to everyone in the audience, just like it says in the title, so please come to receive it!

A Special Question for the New Year!

Q: The January issue of Animedia also doubles as our New Year’s issue. Which of mona’s songs would you like us to listen to for the first song of the year?

Natsukawa: “No.1”, not just because it’s the first month of the year (laughs). I picked this song as it could motivate us to strive towards our goals of becoming No.1 in the new year! Let’s all “Live our lives to the fullest” this year too!!
