As I approached the fire and its gathered dancing party I glimpsed a figure who, to my eyes, did not belong. Where they were young and full of vibrant energy, tossing back pills and drinks with joyous abandon, to look at him was to look at something dark and quiet at the center of their chaotic spiral.

For a brief moment he saw me through the crowd. We locked eyes. An itch crawled through my skin like my nerves had been set on fire, and my mouth felt like paper. I tore my gaze away just as a strange pressure began to build in my chest - a sense of building panic with no cause I could discern. I took a long drink from the can in my hand and counted to three.

When I dared look again, he was gone.

What are the odds …?

While Lord Huron was on tour in Nashville, the front man called for an Uber. The driver who showed up happened to be fan of the band - a card-carrying World Ender, in fact - and recognized Benjamin instantly.

The driver’s name is Kurt Oberstaedt and he posted the photo you see here on the WE website, along with his Christmas wish to the tribe:

“Merry Christmas fellow World Enders. May your day be filled with Ends of the Earth memories and Mine Forever dreams. See you at RR in 2025. That’s my Christmas presents this year.

“And, yes, I’m the guy who gave Ben Schneider a ride!!”

Lord Huron soothes the savage beast

Meet Quinn, the four-legged World Ender. She's an 11-year-old rescue dog prone to anxiety attacks relieved only by music. Lord Huron music. "The Night We Me" in particular.

Fireworks and thunderstorm severely rattle her. Her owners - the son and daughter-in-law of our lake neighbors - have employed various music and videos to try to soothe her, without success ... until this past Independence Day.

When the fireworks were popping, Quinn, her owners said, " .... stood at the top of the stairs barking relentlessly. When 'The Night We Met' came on ... when the ooh, oohs started, she cocked her ears and settled down ..."

Now, it's Quinn's go-to number.

A couple of years ago I told you about a young boy with autism named Liam, who also finds calmness and comfort in LH’s music. His mother wrote:

“… We’ve noticed Liam gravitate toward Lord Huron songs really early on and they’ve been singing him to sleep for the past 6 years.”
