Hello there! Absolutely no requirement to answer this, but I love the outdoor cat run you've attached to your home! I'd love to do the same, but I live in the American South, where mosquitos are very rampant, and it is very hot and humid in the summer. I would appreciate any amount of info you had put into practice or learned while making it, or if you had any insight to accommodate a different climate. It seems that the opening comes through a window, is it still possible to close it off? Thank you again. Your cats seem to love it, amazing job!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can do! I also have some asks about how this is built, so let me try to explain that first. This is only attached to the house with two screws--under the ramp, not really visible, is a section of 2x4 (red rectangle) that is screwed flat into the siding (blue dots). That's what the ramp rests on, and the ramp in turn is attached to the doorway box with screws from the side (green lines). The box is also attached to the board with screws from the side (purple lines).
On the inside of the window, I stapled the window screen directly to the wooden frame. I don't have a good picture of this from inside, but in the first picture, the staples are on the inside where the yellow dotted line is. I then cut the window screen on that green L line (whoops should be a U, so that it's a flap!) in the same picture. The screen gets pushed open by the cats on their way in and out, and then flops back closed like a cat flap. You can see it pushed up in the first pic, on Mal's back in the side view, and closed in the third pic.
The other end of the ramp is attached to the catio with a pair of screws (blue lines in pic of end of ramp) and is zip tied to the wire and stapled to the wall (white lines).
Yes, I can still just close this window like normal. This doesn't affect anything on the inside, and if I wanted to remove this, I would just replace the screen fabric in this window (the frame is not affected at all) and put woodfiller in the screw holes in the siding. So this window continues to work like normal, with only small gaps where the screen flap hangs! If mosquitos get to be a problem, I would wrap the whole tunnel in window screen--which you can buy by the roll--and put another rectangular frame at the end of the tunnel by the catio, with another "cat flap" of window screen at that end. That way any mosquito that makes it through the first flap has to then make it through a second one to actually get in. If you were concerned about air conditioning escaping, I would actually fully enclose the tunnel with sheet foam insulation, and make a cutout that would fit in the open window of sheet foam as well. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would help. You could use an actual plastic cat flap for one end too!
To be clear, this is a complete impulse build out of scrap materials, so there's definitively refining to do! I'm probably going to put some kind of weight on the end of the screen flap to help it swing down, and treads on the ramp. It's also worth noting that this is NOT predator proof--if safety is a concern, use 1/2 in welded wire hardware cloth instead of this large-gap hog fence.

I have to clean up these pieces and use lots of woodfiller to make things fit. But she's coming along pretty well. The dollhouse kit was $15 at an estate sale and had been kept outside where it got wet and warped. Ironically I'm building it in our flood damaged concrete floor bedroom. Nice.

Work in Progress Wednesdays! It is done! I finished the Traveler's Bow from Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild! It's been along and wild journey as I took this awful, grainy 3d printed piece to it's refined version you see. I Printed, sanded, filled in with wood filler, sanded some more, primed with sandable primer, sanded EVEN MORE, wet sanded, Primed MORE, MORE WET SANDING, assembled the shaft with glue, woodfilled the gaps in the shaft pieces, YET MORE SANDING, Painted, WET SANDED REDUX, Painted again, Clear Coated, and attached the silver pieces with glue. I will be putting a video out in the future on the whole process! What's your favorite Zelda Item?

Tesla has slashed prices globally on its electric vehicles by as much as 20%, extending an aggressive discounting strategy and challenging rivals after missing Wall Street delivery estimates for 2022. The move, which prompted a 5.6% fall in Tesla’s shares, came after CEO Elon Musk warned that the prospect of recession and higher interest rates meant it could lower prices to sustain volume growth at the expense of profit. Musk acknowledged last year that prices had become “embarrassingly high” and could hurt demand. The lower pricing across the U.S., Europe, Middle East and Africa, following a series of cuts last week in Asia, marks a reversal from the strategy the automaker had pursued through much of 2021 and 2022 when new vehicle orders exceeded supply. A reduction in cost inflation was also a factor in reducing prices in its top European market, a spokesperson for Tesla Germany said, without specifying which costs had fallen. The U.S. price cuts on its global top-sellers the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover SUV, were between 6% and 20%, Reuters calculations showed, with the basic Model Y now costing$52,990, down from $65,990. That is before an up to $7,500 federal tax credit that took effect for many electric vehicles at the start of January. Tesla also cut prices for its Model X luxury crossover SUV and Model S sedan in the United States. In Germany, it lopped between about 1% and almost 17% off prices on the Model 3 and the Model Y depending on the configuration. The best-selling Model Y will now go for 44,890 euros ($48,499), down by 9,100 euros. It also reduced prices in Austria, Switzerland and France. The cuts may make EV cars affordable to people who may have been previously priced out of the market. In France, customers buying the Model 3 for 44,990 euros will now get a further reduction through a government subsidy of 5,000 euros on an EV scheme with a threshold of 47,000 euros. For a U.S. buyer of the long-range Model Y, the new Tesla price combined with the U.S. subsidy amounts to a discount of 31%. In addition, the move broadened the vehicles in Tesla’s line-up eligible for the Biden administration tax credit. Before the price cut, the five-seat version of the Model Y had been ineligible, which Musk called “messed up”. After the price cut, the long-range version of the Model Y will qualify. ‘SHOT ACROSS BOW’ Shares fell as investors worried the move might erode bumper margins, particularly as competition intensifies, even if it boosts sales volumes. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said the move could boost global deliveries by 12-15% this year and shows Musk on the offensive. “This is a clear shot across the bow at European automakers and US stalwarts (GM and Ford) that Tesla is not going to play nice in the sandbox with an EV price war now underway,” Ives said in a research note. “Margins will get hit on this, but we like this strategic poker move by Musk and Tesla.” In Europe, Stellantis, Volkswagen and Renault were down between 2.2% and 3.8% at 1449 GMT. U.S. automakers General Motors and Ford fell 6.2% and 6.7%, respectively, making them the biggest losers on the S&P share index in early trading. ‘PUNCH IN THE GUT’ Tesla fans and customers complained the price cuts disadvantaged those who had recently bought a vehicle, leaving them with a lower second-hand value. Greg Woodfill in Seattle, who bought a Model Y in December, had considered waiting until the new year to get the U.S. subsidy, but was lured by a discount at the time of $3,750. “It’s a punch in the gut, to be honest,” he told Reuters on Friday, adding that it feels unfair Tesla sought to boost fourth quarter sales with discounts, only to cut prices a month later. “If they knew they would drop the price this much, they should have just done it in December.” In China, where Tesla cut prices last week by 6-13.5%, owners protested at delivery centres, calling for compensation. For 2021, the United States and China combined had accounted for about 75% of Tesla sales, but it has been growing in Europe.
Tesla cut prices in China and other Asian markets last week, which analyst had said would boost demand and increase pressure on rivals, including BYD, to follow suit in what could become a price war in the largest single EV market.

Okay so years ago, when my grandpa was moving out from his home after my grandma died, when we were emptying out his home we brought this old wall clock home with us. The clock mechanism itself was already long gone so at that point it was just an empty wooden box, and, y'know. I thought it'd make for a cute shelf to hang on the wall. And I finally got to do that transformation this summer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The circle glass piece had shattered during transportation years ago, but honestly, it was kind of fine, really. The box does look like an old clock the way it was anyways, and I was hoping to change it just enough to make it look a little less like a former clock. And to do that, I was going to have to make the two glass windows into one big glass door, which would mean needing to get a whole new piece of glass anyways. So one of the pieces having shattered wasn't an issue Also, do want to note that I actually kind of did start this project in 2023. While I was working on some other projects a few times I had just a little bit of time to work on other things here an there, so brought out the clock to get a little work done on it when I could, but since I was working on other shit I didn't actually get much progress done until this year. Started by taking off the door entirely along with the hardware (and thank god I took a photo of the hardware before I removed it because I did not remember how to put these back together without doublechecking the photo first. I could have been in real trouble (shocking, considdering the hatch is just two pieces and a screw, how do you forget how they went together))
Tumblr media
It's not super easy to see in the photos but the original finish on the wood (a polyurethane? Maybe? Considdering how hard it felt?) had started cracking and I didn't really like the color of the wood. I thought the future shelf would look cute if it was painted a bright color on the inside and was black on the outside, so I got to scraping the original finish off. And yeah, it was hard to remove, despite the cracking the finish was really tough. Not helped by how for a long time I thought I wouldn't be able to remove the back piece at all. The screws holding the back in place had sunken in really deep into the wood and I thought they wouldn't come out, which was making scraping the inside practically impossible, and I couldn't sand the finish off either because a sander wouldn't fit inside with the back piece in place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But after getting frustrated enough I decided to give removing the back a shot anyways and, actually, the back piece came off really easily, without causing any damage to anything. So I was worried about nothing lmao. And yeah I went and quickly fixed up the back piece, there were holes in it from where the clock mechanism had been attached long ago, and I considdered filling them up with dowels. However the dowels I had on hand were too big, and since I was going to paint the back piece anyways, I figured I could get away with just woodfiller, it'd be less effort than trying to make those holes bigger for dowels that I'd then have to glue down and cut and sand etc etc. So yeah, woodfiller went in, sanded it the whole thing down, put some primer onto the board, decided I wanted to put MORE filler on there (just to make sure it was all smooth and nice etc), and more primer on top after that
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidenote, I forgot to take photos of me removing the rest of the finish on the frame of the clock/shelf :D I did get it done eventually, it was really tricky getting all the tight edges, but with the help of my trusty scraper and sander, and with the back piece removed I did get it done EVENTUALLY. Which then also allowed me to move onto the door! Started by removing the hardware from it (I had just left it there because, again I started working on this a year earlier and I didn't want to risk losing them) along with the remaining glass piece.
Tumblr media
Now, this I would never have been able to do until this year actually, when I got my router when working on the cat tree. But because I do have a router now, I was able to make a new channel for where the new glass piece would go (which I would go get AFTER the door was done), as well as cut the excess wood off the door so there's just one big window on it. (Of course, you're not really supposed to use a router for that, but it was honestly easier to do it that way than to try and use a handsaw)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, the end result is far from perfect, you really shouldn't try to freehand shit with a router because the machine IS powerful and can sometimes jerk into a direction and cause unwanted damage to the wood, but I don't really have a proper workplace to do my projects in so I didn't have much of a choise. Also this was just my second time using the router for something so like, of course I'm still learning how to properly use the machine. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for me
Excitingly though, the router allowed me to do one other thing: add extra shelves inside the frame. Now this was a bit tricky because I just wanted to get some hard, non-wobbly MDF board to add shelves, but for whatever fucking reason you can't get the kind of MDF I want in this damn country from a regular hardware store. I could've gotten some plywood, but that shit's fucking expensive (and comes in massive sheets, far more material than I'd ever need), so I had some issues figuring out what I could use to make the shelves. But, y'all, I got LUCKY. When looking around the hardware store I ran into some wooden doorsteps. They were just the right thickness (not too thick so they wouldn't look weird), and extremely sturdy, and best of all; my store had like two doorsteps made of poppler, that were on discount, for like 3€ each. A god damn bargain is what that is. (Again, 6€ for two small wood pieces in the perfect size instead of like 50€ for a massive plywood sheet. I got so lucky)
Now the downside was that they were a little curled, and this did feel like a waste of good wood (since I was going to paint them), but for that price? Yeah no, I took them, they were perfect for this project. But yeah, I did some measuring, cut a piece (with my router because it was going to be less effort than with a saw, also, was going to give me a straighter cut. I can not get shit straight with a handsaw man), and used the router to make channels into the frame to slot the piece in (btw the fact that the router fit inside the frame so I was able to make those channels was an absolute miracle). It was really tricky, but I eventually got there. One done, two more to go
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sidenote but at some point I had done some veneer damage on one corner of the frame. Didn't have veneer with a matching pattern, so to patch it I used the veneer that I had that was the closest in color instead.
But yeah, repeated the shelf making process two more times, made sure everything was sanded down nicely and was smooth, and it was time to start applying finish to the frame and the door. As I had previously mentioned, I did want to paint the inside of the shelf a nice bright color and make the outside black, and as usual, this was fine in theory. I had yellow paint leftover from back when I refinished that one sidetable, and that was going to look super cute without a doubt. But instead of painting the outside I wanted to use wax instead. (Like, the good Osmo wax, not the floorwax I was fooled into buying when redoing that one shelving unit that made me loose my mind last year)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One coat on both pieces here and, yeah. I have now learned the hard way that perhaps black wax just doesnt look good on warm-toned wood and should be reserved for like, birch and pine, paler woods. I did get it to look semi-decent with enough coats, but I'm not happy with the color, ngl, and it definitely doesn't match the bright yellow on the inside. Had I either just painted the outside black or done the inside white it would've looked better, but. I wanted to trust the process, and that's what I did. Once the wax finish was done I proceeded to tape the edges so I could paint the inside of both the door and the frame (and the shelf pieces, all separately). Had to shove some toothpicks into the hinge holes on the door so I didn't plug them with paint, and once everything was painted I had to clean up the frame because there was some funny paint build-up here and there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once the door was done though I took it to a glass shop so they could put a new glass window into it. In the meanwhile, I polished the original hardware a little bit since it was so freaking dingy, and got new hardware to actually hang the shelf on the wall once done
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Not shown but I did have some issues with the wax finish, namely, the painters tape I had put on it to protect it from getting paint on it left glue residue on it that I couldn't get off without damaging the wax finish all over again, on top of getting paint in a whole different spot when doing a small paint touch-up, that resulted in me having to redo a whole section of wax. It was extremely frustrating, but I survived)
Once everything was done and the door was picked up, I got to reassemble the shelf and put it on me wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I mentioned, the wax finish does not look good with the bright yellow, if the inside was white or the outside painted black, it'd look far better, without a doubt. But it is what it is, if I ever decide I can't stand looking at the shelf anymore I can do either to improve it (probably paint the outside, might be easier)
That aside I am still pretty happy with how the shelf turned out. The shelf pieces are a smidge wonky (due to the wood being curled so I wouldn't have been able to get a seamless fit with them (yeah I could've put woodfiller in the seams and painted over it but I just. Did not want to) on top of the router jerking out of control by accident a few times) but the piece as a whole is extremely functional and does exactly what I wanted from it. I can put some nicknacks in it and display them in a cute manner, I just need to take the little W when I can.
