3 Examples of Effective Branding
Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Opens at California Adventure
Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! is a new ride that opened at Disney California Adventure in May 2017. The ride uses the same structure, place in the park, and riding system as Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Working in tandem with Marvel, the theme park sought to brand the film and its characters with a ride at the park. According to an article by Joe Rohde, Disney wanted to create a high energy adventure experience with a mix of characters from the blockbuster film (p.1). This is not the first time Disney has effectively branded its park to separate itself from what others like Universal Studios, Knott's Berry Farm, and Six Flags do. Radio and billboard advertisements are placed throughout Southern California displaying the new attraction at Disney California Adventure. This is also an effective way of re-branding as there was not much that the company had to do in order to revamp the previous Twilight Zone ride, because it still offers the free fall sensation, just with new special effects both in audio and visuals. By using the prior riding system, there was minimal that Disney had to do, while still ensuring the brand was seen by consumers as fresh and aligned with the current film - even though the existing riding system was left in place.
Lyft & Its Effective Branding
Lyft is a brand that emerged shortly after Uber. One of the key aspects of the brand is in its operation of how customers are treated. Having been a customer of both brands, Lyft seems to be more effective in how it showcases what it does. For example, when Lyft initially started, it offered ride sharing opportunities, where customers could ride with others at a cheaper rate. Lyft also allows customers to tip the drivers via their interface. Uber does not have this option. Since Lyft's prime competitor is Uber, the company appears to want to put as much distance between their similarities as possible with these options.
In an article by Laura Sydell of NPR, it states that more than 3/4ths of the drivers of Lyft state that they enjoy the experience more than those who work as Uber drivers. Moreover, they make more. Of the drivers surveyed, where most of them made roughly $16 per hour driving for Uber, while those who drove Lyft made at least $2-3 more per hour (p.1). This suggests that Lyft thought out their branding much more than Uber did in terms of distinguishing itself. Many of the concepts that Lyft proposed and executed at the onset of their emergence in the marketplace, Uber has since adopted many of the ideas that Lyft did as they were starting to lose customers to Lyft. Still, this does not mean that Lyft is much more effective in its branding than Uber in how it displayed itself toward consumers.
Oreo’s “Wonderfilled” Campaign Brands the Cookie as a Whimsical Treat
There is something fun, engaging, and innovative about Oreo’s “Wonderfilled” campaign. The campaign initially started in 2013 with several different animated advertising spots to celebrate the brand's 100th birthday. It has evolved into a concept that seemingly was meant to be a one-time campaign, into new ads that air in 2017. Each advertisement features a song by the band, Owl City, and is either 30, 60, or 90 seconds. The song is a variation on the initially titled, "Wonderfilled Anthem." The campaign is effective because it brings the Oreo brand to life. While cookies have always been popular and so has the brand, the use of color and a musical aspect being illustrated into the advertisements allows for new customers and loyal ones to experience the brand through fresh eyes. The theme captures the attention of the viewer immediately and is extremely catchy and memorable. The company arguably sought and continues to seek to make the cookie as whimsical as it can with multiple variations of the anthem being featured across several ad spots. It is an excellent PR move that successfully brightened up the brand amidst an array of other cookie options, while simultaneously showing why it has existed for 100 years. The campaign brands Oreo as a quirky cookie that will delight people of all ages for years to come. It is perhaps the best advertising campaign to emerge in years surrounding a dessert such as a cookie.
