Love Again
Pairing: Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) x Barbara Minerva (Cheetah)
Summary: A few years after the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Diana runs into Barbara at the mall.
Words: 1600+
Warnings: mentions of eating food
-
-
-
Diana sifted through the racks, pulling out any shirts that sparked her interest. She had an interview for a new position at the museum tomorrow, and even though she wasn’t afraid of not getting it, it’s always nice to get something new and look nice. With this new job, she’d have more oversight over the department, and possibly be able to spend more time exploring her own interests.
After trying everything on and checking out, Diana headed to the mall food court to grab a bite to eat. Usually the food there didn’t appeal to her very much, but today it smelled too good to resist.
She stood in line, skimming over the menu and checking her wallet.
“…Diana?” she heard a familiar voice behind her.
The sweet voice she never thought she’d ever hear again.
She turned around to see her old friend Barbara Minerva, pressing her lips together and rocking from side to side sheepishly.
“Barbara? Is that really you?”
She looked different, but not unrecognizable. Her hair was a few shades darker and less fluffy, but she had her old glasses still. Her outfit was very bland and casual, nothing like the bright colors and bold patterns she used to love.
Barbara nodded, “Yeah. I’m sorry, I just…I was in town and I saw you and thought I’d say hi. You seem busy though, I can go-“
“No,” Diana smiled, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Stay and have lunch with me, I’d love to catch up,”
“Really?”
“Yes of course. I’ve missed you,”
They both ordered their food and found an empty table, although they were much more invested in conversation than the fries.
“I heard you moved away, so where are you living now?” Diana took a sip of her drink. “And what brings you back here?”
“New York City, currently,” Barbara responds. “I…I just wanted a fresh start, you know? I took a job at the Natural History Museum up there and I like it a lot,” she laughs, “People still don’t really notice me, but I don’t mind so much anymore,”
“Wow,”
“I came back here to visit some family for the weekend, but I’m heading back tomorrow,” she adjusts her glasses and takes a bite of her food. “What have you been up to?”
“Well, still working at the Smithsonian. I have an interview tomorrow for a promotion and if it goes well I’ll oversee the department,”
“Oh my gosh Diana! That’s amazing!”
“Thank you,” she laughs. “It is exciting, I suppose,”
“Well I hope you get it. I know you’ll get it,”
Diana sighs through her grin, debating on how much she should ask Barbara. It’s been several years since the incident, but time works differently for everyone, something an immortal like herself will never fully understand. Barbara seems to have moved on, but there was a tension that she couldn’t deny. They never got closure since Barbara packed her bags pretty quickly. Maybe she was avoiding Diana, avoiding Maxwell, maybe trying to run away from herself.
There was a short silence before Diana spoke again, “Barbara, why did you leave?”
She laughed it off, ignoring the seriousness of the question, “I told you, I just wanted a fresh start. Doesn’t everybody want that once in a while?”
“Why couldn’t you start fresh here?”
“Because…” she looked down, across the room, everywhere except Diana’s gaze. “I couldn’t face you after what happened. I couldn’t just go to work the next day after everything I did. I would rather just abandon everything. I almost didn’t even talk to you today, but I just felt like I needed to,”
“Barbara,” Diana placed her hand over hers. “I was never angry at you. I could never be angry at you,”
She pulled her hand away, “Diana I literally tried to kill you. I became a monster and tried to stop you from saving the world. I was selfish and cruel and awful and I don’t deserve to be anything close to your friend. Not after that,”
“I believe in forgiveness,” Diana smiles. “And I forgive you,”
“I…thank you,” Barbara nods. “Well now I kinda wish I stayed,”
Diana pauses a moment.
“You could come back, if that’s what you wanted,”
“Diana- I couldn’t. There’s no place for me here anymore,”
Diana shakes her head, “That’s not true. If I get this promotion, this new position, I’ll have the power to hire new people. I could give you your old job back,”
“Are you serious?”
“Of course,”
“Wow! Well, I mean, why not, right?” she giggles. “Okay, so I guess I’ll have to move all my stuff back here, that might be a couple weeks to settle in again, and I have to wrap up my other job. I don’t even know where to live though, my old apartment is most likely taken so I’ll have to find a new one, oh gosh all this-“
“You’re welcome to stay in my apartment until you find a place,”
“Really? Wow. I don’t even know what to say,”
“It’s my pleasure,” Diana packs up her food containers and tosses it in the nearby trashcan. “You know, if you’re still around tomorrow, I’d love to get together again before you head back,”
“Yes! Yes I’d love that,”
-
Diana and Barbara met up again late in the evening the next day, after Barbara decided to take a later flight. They had dinner and took a walk around the city, up and down streets with no destination.
It was as if they were simply continuing the friendship they started before, babbling on about whatever comes to mind and laughing together. Diana missed this, being with one of the only people who could make her feel this happy. Before everything happened, Barbara had given her hope, hope that she could have fun again, hope that she could love again. Now they could pick up where they left off, start new and move on through life together.
“You know, Diana,” Barbara looked up at her. “I don’t think you ever explained to me what you are. I mean clearly you have some sort of superpowers. Of course you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to! Just forget I ever said anything,”
“Barbara, it’s alright, truly,” Diana smiles. “I’m a demigoddess, I come from the island of Themyscira, the island of the Amazons. My mother is Queen Hippolyta and my father is Zeus,”
“Oh wow,” Barbara’s eyes widen. “So like, all that Greek mythology stuff, that’s all real?”
“Very real, yes,”
“So when I wished to be like you, I was a demigoddess too?”
“You had the powers of one, yes,” Diana nods, then stops a moment. “Is that really what your wish was?”
“Yeah…I know,” Barbara shrugged. “I just...when I first met you, you were so perfect and so beautiful and being your friend made me so incredibly happy for once, and I guess I thought being like you would make me even happier,” she bit her lip. “But I think just being with you makes me happy. I don’t want to be you anymore, Diana. I just want you to be in my life,”
“I want that too,” Diana says.
“Gosh, I really missed you,” Barbara laughs, but there’s also tears in her eyes.
Diana stops walking and brings a hand to Barbara’s face, wiping a tear away with her thumb, “It’s going to be alright,”
She leans into Diana’s touch, smiling against her palm, “Thank you,”
“Would you like me to take you home for the night?” Diana asks, stroking her hand down Barbara’s hair.
“No,” she shakes her head. “I mean, maybe, I don’t know,”
“How about I take you somewhere else, then,” Diana slips out her lasso and wraps her arm around Barbara’s waist. “Would you like to try flying?”
“You can fly?!” Barbara squeals. “Yes! Yes! Absolutely yes!”
Diana grins and tightens her grip, throwing the lasso in the air and catching the wind. Barbara screams and holds on as tight as she can, burying her face in Diana’s shoulder more and more as they got higher.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” Diana whispers.
Eventually they land on the top of a building, Barbara still clinging on for dear life. It’s a beautiful overlook of the city, all the lights and people down below. Barbara beams when she looks over Diana’s shoulder, resting her feet down slowly.
“Wow, Diana,” she walks over to the railing and takes in the view. “This makes all that worth it,”
“I couldn’t always fly, you know,” Diana joins her. “I only learned a few years ago…when someone helped me,”
“I see,”
It wasn’t hard for Barbara to connect the dots and figure out who she was talking about, and she was able to read Diana well enough to know she shouldn’t push it. She could only assume that the man Diana wished for was now gone. Forever.
“Diana I…I feel like I should tell you something,”
“What is it?”
Barbara took a deep breath, “You know how I said when I first met you I was so so confused, I didn’t know if I wanted to be like you or just be your friend?”
“Yes, I remember,”
“I think it was more than that,”
“I understand, Barbara,”
“You do?”
“I felt it too. I was…just too afraid to move on at the time, I suppose,” Diana took her hand and intertwined their fingers. “But now I think I am,”
“Really?” Barbara meets her gaze. “Are you really ready for that?”
“I am,” Diana faces her. “I’m ready to love again,”
Barbara smiles, not taking her eyes off of her.
Diana leans in slowly and presses a soft kiss to her lips, cradling her face and separating with a grin, “I’m ready to love you,”

tell me your all time fave ships, like aaaaaalllll time from anything
hey there! u know this ask is pretty timely since i’m making this pairing + romance tropes gifset thing which i’m not sure i’ll be able to finish in time but lmao at least this would help me sort my shit out. hmm… but well, i don’t really have an ultimate ship™ since i jump fandoms pretty quick and in typical me fashion, i forget the pairings i ship once i leave. dare i say commitment issues? but for real tho i do have some but i don’t ship them in the same intensity as before.
but since u asked, i will try and deliver. so my ships in order of Relevance To Me At The Moment:
superbat ⏤ damn this hits the spot u have no idea. just… this big giant ball of sunshine and a dark brooding mastermind falling in love? sign me the fuck up. u know the fuck? sign me. their chemistry is undeniable i can go on and on. through love anything is possible so jot that down. i mean superman and batman invented best friends to lovers???? i rest my case.
timkon ⏤ ok i lied these two invented best friends to lovers. i mean tim and kon are soulmates at this point @dc are u seeing this!!!! they’re like superbat lite lmao i’m kidding but y’all can see a pattern here. on the one hand u have this messy bitch who loves micromanaging tf out of everything and on another u’ve got a super strong clone who gets an existential/identity crisis every two seconds. what’s not to love?
bruharvey ⏤ don’t even try me. this is my guilty pleasure and u can pry this pairing from my cold dead hands. again… with the…. best friends to lovers…. thing… ok i can try enemies to lovers and even best friends to enemies to lovers with this one. these two are such a wild ride i love it. the danger, the excitement. admittedly this is the only pairing i’ve written fanfics for but they will never see the light of day ever. no way, no how.
basically every superbat-esque ship holds a special place in my heart ⏤ midpollo, hernankirk, supergirl/batgirl, powergirl/huntress
i never actually thought this far like… those three ships are the ones i fixate on rn so anything else is kinda up in the air for me. but here are some other dc pairings i’m cool with, in no particular order: (faves are italicized)
stephcass, dickkory, clois, dicktiger, jayroy, batcat, halbarry, bluepulse, boostle, harleyivy, wondertrev, wondercheetah, olliedinah, dickwally, arrowbat or whatever, arthurmera, jason/happiness, and a bunch of other stuff that i can’t remember but yeah
*honorable mention:
somebody made me ship clex and it actually worked. but only if it’s smallville!clark and lex tho
since those are mostly dc here’s a few from other ends:
sirius/remus ⏤ 6th grade me was shookt
billyteddy ⏤ timkon 2.0 except they actually happened lmao tbh i actually shipped them before i even knew what a tim drake or a kon-el was
amyrosa ⏤ they’re bi and they’re mine now
jakeamy ⏤ bitch!!!! these two heteros i swear
nozaki/sakura ⏤ speaking of heteros, this is my ult anime pairing like….
spideypool ⏤ probs the only marvel comic i read in any sense of consistency rn is the spiderman/deadpool title
amerikate ⏤ literally what i want in life, hashtag goals hashtag mood
john legend/chrissy teigen ⏤ heteros who stay on top of That, also my actual parents
cherik ⏤ old married couple down the block
every wlw in hayley kiyoko’s music videos
this got really long but i’m pretty sure i still missed a lot anyway. so there u have it anon! all the things i care abt in one post. thanks for the ask!

i.
Room 203. Diana slides in the key card, and the door unlocks.
Carol assigned you and Diana to attend a gala a few states over on the behalf of the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian handled everything—the flight, hotel, meals. The only thing you had to worry about was what you were going to wear to the gala. And maybe… your feelings for Diana.
A whole weekend you will get to spend with Diana, and you can’t be any happier. But your stomach was uneasy at the thought upon first being told this. You’re going to an event with her. Just her, no one else. She’s practically going to be your date. Is it a date? No, no.
That’s silly, Barbara.
You turn the lights on as you enter the room, and that uneasiness you felt at the announcement of Carol’s “assignment” and during the flight resurfaces. They gave you the wrong hotel room.
A king-sized bed.
Instead of the double queen.
“Hey, Diana?” You look over your shoulder at Diana as she hangs her dress up in the closet. She hangs up yours, too. “I think they—”
Diana waves it off. “Yes, I know. The receptionist said something about… overbooking, so they had to give us a different room. We can figure something out. No worries.”
You remember, you zoned out while Diana was checking in. Shoot. You mentally slap yourself and set your duffle down on the floor at the end of the bed. “Right… Uh, yeah. Okay. It’s— It’s fine.”
“I’m going to hop in the shower,” she says, putting her duffle on the bed and searching through it. “Do you need to?”
You shake your head. “I will in the morning.”
...
You and Diana have prepared for a long night of sleep, and now you lie beside her—but you try to pretend that she isn’t because the fact might as well keep you up all night—staring at the ceiling in the silence of the hotel room. You feel the mattress shift under you and exhale. Maybe once she’s asleep, you can start pretending.
Right now, Diana’s wide awake, and her voice breaking the night’s silence says so. You turn onto your side.
Your eyes have already adjusted to the dark of the room, but she’s rather blurry without your glasses on. You rub your eyes, blink a few times as if that will help. It doesn’t, so you reach over to grab your glasses from the nightstand with a groan and put them on.
Definitely better. Perfect, just like Diana.
“Huh? What’s up?” you finally respond in a whisper.
Diana chuckles. “You know, you don’t have to whisper. No one else is here.”
Don’t remind me.
“Uh, yeah. I just heard that walls are kinda thin in hotels so I wanted to be, uh, considerate of, you know, people that share a wall with us.”
Really, Barbara?
“All right. We can whisper then,” Diana says, lowering her voice. It’s deeper, calmer, and you swear your heart is starting to beat faster and faster.
“No. No. It’s fine, really. Just ignore me.” You hide your face in your hands.
After a moment, you separate your fingers and peek through them, and Diana giggles. Heat rises to your cheeks. You’re not sure if it’s from embarrassment or being flustered. Whatever it is, your head somehow ends up buried in her shoulder.
She’s this close to you? You’re this close to her?
And she’s… is stroking your hair now?
Your stomach twists in knots, but you dismiss it because you want to stay. Because this feels… good.
You forget to take your glasses off—you don’t care—falling asleep with your head on Diana’s shoulder and your arm around her waist.
ii.
You sit on the bed and shove your feet into heels. They’re brand new, bought just for this event. Nothing more. You would never wear heels like these otherwise. Not to work, not anywhere. You like to stick to something more comfortable, flats, maybe a nice wedge. But heels? No. Never.
The dress you have on is new, too. Except, unlike the heels, the dress flows from your waist to your ankles. Comfortable, just how you like it, yet still beautiful, nice.
The bathroom door opens, and you give all of your attention to Diana, who’s holding the top of her dress up. “Can you—?”
“Zip you?” You nod and wave for Diana to come over.
In front of the body mirror, you guide her hair to the side over her shoulder, and suddenly, you forget how to breathe. Or maybe you’re holding your breath. Or your throat closed up, air stuck in your lungs. You ache to trail your hand along her bare back, but you refrain. She’s your co-worker, your friend. And yet, the previous night, she let you hold her, lie against her as if she isn’t those two things at all to you.
You sigh and carefully zip up her dress, not wanting the fabric to get caught in the zipper. “All zipped up,” you say, and step back.
“Thank you, Barbara. I appreciate you, really.” She turns.
The first thing you notice is that her eyes are glowing, bright, to match the smile on her red lips. Then, the dress itself. It’s shorter than yours, ending right above her knees, and white. There is some detailing on the thick straps in black, but other than that, it’s simple in a way only Diana can ever pull off.
You continue to wonder if you’re still holding your breath. You’re not sure how you’re still alive, standing in her presence, somehow composed. Gosh, she’s just so—
You bow your head, cheeks flushing. “You’re beautiful, Diana.”
“I can say the same about you, Barbara. Truly.”
“I don’t know. I…” You adjust your glasses.
Diana grabs your hands, caressing them like she’s gathering snowflakes. And they melt right in her hands. You’re melting in her hands. “You are.”
You meet her gaze, and she surrounds you in the warmth of her atmosphere.
...
It had to have been a date.
Diana held your hand.
Diana fixed your hair.
Diana brought you back to reality when you zoned out, then whispered in your ear what was going on so you understood the conversation.
Diana took you outside when things became too much, overwhelming.
Diana helped you calm down.
Diana…
Or maybe she was just being a good friend.
Yeah, she was just being a good friend. That’s all, Barbara.
...
It wasn’t hard for you to find sleep, but waking up in the middle of the night is something you can’t control. Your brain turns back on, even though you don’t want it to. This time, you’re kind of glad that you did wake up because you don’t want to miss the feeling of Diana spooning you—her body pressed against yours, her arm wrapped around you as if to protect you, her legs intertwined with yours.
You start thinking, what if Diana—
“Barbara?”
She’s still awake.
You tense up.
“Are you all right?”
You stare at the wall in front of you, or what you can see of the wall anyway, which is just a dark blur. Would be a cream blur if the light was on. “I’m, uh… Yes, I’m fine. All good. I just woke up, you know. Just woke up.” You’re such a fucking mess. “Why are you still awake? Or did you, um, wake up, too?” No, you should ask her why she’s spooning you.
“I guess I can’t sleep,” Diana answers. “I was really worried about you, Barbara, at the gala.”
You feel her breath on your neck as she speaks. You shiver. “It’s okay, Diana. I’m okay. You can sleep. I don’t want to interrupt your sleep. Don’t worry about me, okay?”
Just keep holding me.
You grab her hand and bring it close to your chest, lacing your fingers. “Thank you, for caring about me, Diana. Sleep well.”
“You, too, Barbara,” Diana mumbles with a relaxed sigh. She nuzzles your back, right at your shoulder blades.
iii.
There were only a few meetings this morning, and that was it. You had the rest of the day to spend with Diana, going out to eat and walking around town. You stopped at a few stores, but neither of you bought anything.
Now, past dinner hours, you’re back in the hotel room, and Diana puts on a movie. You prop up the pillows on the bed and, once you’re all settled, you pat the spot next to you. Diana accepts, climbing on to the bed to sit beside you.
You didn’t expect her to open her arms out for you to move into. And you don’t hesitate to, cuddling into her side, but it still surprised you. Maybe after how she held you last night, it shouldn’t surprise you. Or how she truly cared for you at the gala more than just a friend would—letting you cry into her shoulder, wiping your tears away with her thumb, kissing your forehead when it was all over.
“Diana?” you start, but immediately regret it.
She looks down at you. “Yes, Barbara? Is everything okay?”
“Yes. Yes! Everything’s good. Yes. Just fine. All good. Really. Good.”
Diana giggles. “Then, what is it? Hmm?”
You’re stuck in a hole now with no way of getting out, but she should know. She needs to know. You clear your throat and sit up, out of Diana’s embrace. “There’s something I should tell you.”
“I’m listening.”
You hear it, confusion in her voice. But also worry, concern, even though you already said that everything is good. Is it? Is it truly good?
“I… I like you.” You pause for a moment, wait to see if she has something to say. She leaves you in silence, so you continue on. “I mean, in a way that I shouldn’t. Like, romantically. Like… that. I understand if you don’t want to talk to me anymore. I can just leave. I can get myself a different hotel room or… or something. Or just go back home. Whatever. I understand if you don’t like me, too, at all. I just needed to tell you because all of this hurts. And you really care for me and it’s driving me crazy, like a good crazy. A, uh, crazy that makes me think that you feel the same way even though I tell myself, ‘Barbara, she’s just your friend. This is what friends do.’ I’ve never really had friends. I don’t really know what it’s like to have friends. So it’s all confusing and I feel confused and I’m trying really hard to understand—”
Diana places her hand on your thigh, right above your knee. “Barbara. You’re rambling.”
You look at Diana’s hand, then at her, and laugh awkwardly. “Sorry. I’m nervous. That, uh, happens when I’m nervous.”
“Well, I think it’s cute.” Diana smiles, soft and sweet. “And I kind of knew. You’re not very good at hiding it, but that’s okay.”
“You’re not upset with me?” you ask, your hands fiddling on your lap.
Diana shakes her head. “There’s nothing for you to be nervous about, either, because I like you, too. I think I always have. I haven’t felt this way with anyone in a long time. But you are the brightest star, Barbara, that guides me through a dark sky.” She caresses your cheek, gazing into the blue of your eyes, a blue that she seems to get lost in. “Can I kiss you?”
“Kiss me? You… you want to…” You exhale, or try to. You’re holding your breath again, aren’t you? Diana likes you back, and you can barely get a word out. Maybe you used up all your air during your rambling earlier, or something like that.
Diana Prince wants to kiss you.
It’s a dream, a dream that you decide you want to live. So you nod, and lips meet. When she pulls away, she brushes your nose with her own, leans her forehead against yours, holds your face in her hands. Now, everything feels more clear.
