A day filled with high spirits, community & support for #swimamileforwomenwithcancer @wcrcinberkeley all at the #swimmingpool at @millscollege in #Oakland. @stroupinsurance has been a supporter & participant for years. I have now joined her on many water adventures this one has been the most meaningful. Women's Cancer Resource Center started out giving support to #womenofcolor & #lgbt, now support all #womenwithcancer. I joined Team #TheInsuranceLadies & #waterwalked my mile. Gracias to all our supporters, 100% of the event proceeds are used to support this amazing organization & programming. They even gave me a snazzy participation metal. Maybe you'll join us next year! A year ago today I was diagnosed with cancer. I remember the call from the nurse “your biopsy report is in. The doctor would like to schedule an appointment.” At that moment I knew something wrong. While waiting for the doctor my nerves were getting the best of me but I had to keep calm because my daughter and granddaughter were there with me. Doctor walks in and says “yes, your biopsy report shows malignancy. You have thyroid cancer (the good cancer) and what I recommend is surgery soon. I do not want to wait 6 months because it can spread.” Good cancer huh 🤔. I did not know there was such a thing as good cancer. I was in shock, my heart sank but I had to keep it together. The only thing that was running through my mind was “Are my babies going to be ok?” I looked at my daughter my eyes got watery and she said “Mom everything is going to ok.” That’s all I needed to hear and yes everything is ok. The nurse kept saying “The good thing about this surgery once the cancer is removed it’s gone. That’s why it’s called the good cancer.” Good cancer?? I still don’t get it. Dec. 4th I was diagnosed with #PapillaryCarcinoma the most common type of #ThyroidCancer On Jan. 18 I had a #PartialThyroidectomy (right thyroid removal) and yes it is cancer. With the removal the doc said the cancer is no longer there but I would have to have #RadioactiveIodine to kill any other cancer cells that I might have. I put my #FaithInGod and left it in his hands.
