I had an amazing time at the 2016 Women of Color Expo last Saturday! Me and the OKCA4J squad facilitated a panel discussion about the Holtzclaw case, rape culture, victim blaming, and how to support someone who has experienced domestic or sexual violence.
I had the opportunity to share my day-to-day experiences with the audience while breaking down myths, defining terms, and articulating ways that we as a community can support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. We received great feedback and made a lot of connections.
There’s something about being surrounded by women who look like you that is always so empowering to me - especially living in a state like Oklahoma where these types of events are scarce. Seeing Black women in all of their beauty, strength, and diversity at the Expo has truly inspired me to keep working on being the best me, knowing (and hoping) that somewhere I am showing another brown girl/woman that she can do the same and do it even better. I literally felt like I was at family reunion.
Huge thank you to Perry Publishing and Broadcasting for putting on this beautiful event for our community to enjoy and to all of the other people who helped make it happen. I will definitely be looking out for the next one.
